We stopped here after a friend suggested that I try the food here because I was craving soul food.....not just any type of soul food but GOOD food. Before we entered I checked for the Dept of Health grade rating and it was an A.....thank goodness. It isn't a big restaurant, there are only four large tables and two small tables inside. We were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant. We waited about 15-20 mins before someone came over to take our order. The server came over to our table with no greetings so I said Hello and then he apologized and greeted us properly. We gave him our orders and waited some more. After about 10-15 minutes, our orders started to arrive to our table. My son ordered pork chops, rice and macaroni and cheese and he was pleased with his food because you get two porkchops with the meal. I ordered smothered chicken, yams and macaroni & cheese. I was happy with my sides but not pleased with the quarter leg chicken that was served to me. One piece of chicken for either $10 or $11 is a ripoff to me. Smothered chicken is supposed to be covered in gravy and mine looked just like stewed chicken. My friend ordered the chopped barbecue and was content with his food. We all wasn't pleased with the cornbread that comes with the meal but one bite into it, it practically crumbled in our hands....not good. The lemonade and Arnold Palmer was really good. Ever see 8 adults forage for food on each other's plates? Yup well we did it on a hungry Sunday after church. Everything we ordered was tasty so we pretty much ate each other's food. The only bland item was the potato salad but it was fine since you can add seasoning to your liking. The staff was a bit stoic but you can tell they were focused on serving you some tasty food. The set up of the place is somewhat awkward if you need to use the restroom because you have to pass the open cooking area. Village Voice proclaimed them to have the best fried chicken of 2008. So I waited 20+ minutes for my chicken and chips (fries). I was excited that it was going to be super fresh and yummy, but I was severely disappointed. This could be the WORST fried chicken I've had in NYC. The leg and thigh were from an emaciated bird. Very little meat, not very moist. The crust was nothing special. And absolutely no flavor. I couldn't even taste salt on the damn things. I was stunned at how bad it was. The stuff they serve at the Crown/Kennedy chickens in town are vastly superior, especially if you get their spicy version- and a lot cheaper! The fries were just alright. Once the family got to our destination, my mouth was watering for Southern Comfort Food. The catfish did not disappoint. Flavorful, Crisp and juicy. Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe I've been spoiled by the influx of new "gourmet" takes on BBQ and southern food in Brooklyn. But either way, I didn't think Mitchell's was all it was hyped up to be. Sure, the space is quaint, and most of the staff seem to genuinely like working there. But the food was a bit disappointing. The fried chicken was alright, but nothing worth going out of your way for. Was a little underspiced, though it was hot and crispy. The BBQ ribs were just okay. The sauce tasted like it was out of a bottle. As for the sides, the mac & cheese was lukewarm, and the okra/tomatoes was more okra/corn. I did like that the entrees came with two sides. I always will make sure I'm supporting black businesses, but this trip to Mitchell's did not do it for me. I took today off and was looking to get me some comfort food for my midday meal. I order the fried chicken and fried shrimp dinner with Mac and cheese, cabbage and cornbread. Even as I type this, it sounds so good over and over again. The food came out not very well seasoned, and the shrimp still vainy and maybe 30% fried. The fish was just about 70% fried and just OK. The cabbage and cornbread were pretty good. I stopped by this restaurant with my mom to order a few take out meals. When I entered there were no customers and the staff were all in the back. They appeared to be sitting down to dinner themselves and looked as if they really didnt want to take orders. The restaurant itself is not at all fancy or modern but looked like the old fashion or retro styled kitchen in someone's home. After a few minutes, a young girl appeared and offered to take my order. Then gradually the rest of the staff came out and looked like they were all family members. Soon after I entered, a church group came in and sat down for a meal. They seemed to be regular patrons because I heard a few of them say "ill have my usual" rather then give an actual order. Another staff member took there order while I placed my own. I ordered the fried fish and shrimp combo for myself with potato salad and collard greens for my side dishes. My mother order fried porgies with the same sides that I ordered. This was my first time back in years and I'm so glad I returned. Got the pork chops and my memory didn't do them justice, so juicy and flavorful. It's the kinda place where you should try a bunch of different things, if you like it, it'll do right by you every time, if you don't like it, there's enough to explore so give something else a try. Sorry Mitchell's. After around 25 years of loyal patronage we're disappointed. It was the best friend chicken and potato salad anywhere. Over the past couple of years the health review has fluctuated and the portions have shrunk. Tiny pieces of chicken don't do it. Neither does canned string beans or dry box corn bread. MItchell's is NOT the best soul food restaurant in America. But I can't really say if I've ever had more authentic. It is convenient. The service is wonderful. I absolutely love the owner/waiter/cashier and his wife who cooks in the back. Here they are in a gentrified neighborhood symbolizing one of the only things that remains authentic in that neighborhood. He has a cassette player blazing all the hits from the 80s and 90s. The walls are covered in Obama and MLK art. I really felt like I was at my grandma's house. The cornbread is the best. The water comes out in an old kool aid pitcher. The chicken you order takes 20 minutes because they make it fresh on the spot. It's simple, it's traditional, it's a great dining experience. read more

After having witnessed one too many instances of rodents running along their front door and roaches crawling on the wall, we decided not to take anymore chances with their sub-par and gross tasting food. Though we respect their long standing presence in the community, there is a minimum standard to be met when it comes to food and hygiene. Their fried chicken is below average-this due probably to the lack of freshness of their ingredients. Their collard was drenched in oil-not necessarily a bad thing but had no more taste than a greasy mush in your mouth. And their dessert...some sort of white cake with the consistency of foam and all the artificial favors of a ready made package bought over the counter. I only got Mac and cheese and peach cobbler. It was okay at best. But never get the Mac and cheese. The noodles were too soft and it was bland with minimal cheese. Waste of time. Also wanted banana pudding but all they had was peach cobbler. They served it cold, which I dont believe in, but it was ok. It had a faint after taste of like..old...like a basement or something. Heaven! I am not a big fan of fried chicken. I like it. I eat it on occasion, but when you come here you must get the fried chicken. It's that damn good. I have been on a quest in this city to find some really good soul food. Having strong roots in the south, it is hard to beat the authenticity or even come close here up north. I was surprised that the portions were not very large so since huge portions is a staple of down home southern cuisine. My friend had the fried chicken (dark meat, leg), mac n cheese, yams, and a slice of sweet potato pie and a side of 4 wings to eat later. Fried chicken pretty basic in my opinion, well seasoned but nothing to call home about. My smothered chicken seemed very healthy alternative-esque. I'm used to a rather thick smothering like gravy. This was rather light and runny just like moist baked chicken. The mac was fine, nothing to go all lady gaga over though. The yams were just awkward. You either mash them so they have small bits left or you leave them as big chunks. At Mitchell's, it was like they started to mash them then either hesitated or forgot to finish, idk. Not my favorite part of the meal. Sweet potato pie was Splendiforous! Red velvet cake? Dry and blah which is a shame since I drool over a good slice of red velvet. The meal in all wasn't bad but I just expected more. More portions, more soul in my soul food and just a better experience overall. Service was great though and nice mellow crowd.
