I have known Mitch for years and he has always been very helpful. I go there for leashes, supplies, etc. I used to go for t-shirts but they hiked the price up to $23.00 for their own brand t-shirt. I used to see all the local kids wear them and give Mitch's free advertising but I don't see them worn as much lately, perhaps due to the price increase. Don't expect to be able to make a return/exchange. Once Mitch gets your money, he won't give it back if your dissatisfied with your product (even if you got it a couple hours ago and it still has stickers on). OMG. Cannot say enough great things about this place. A LaJolla institution for sure and it could stand on its own because of that, but they don't shortchange on the customer service. We came in the day before Xmas to look at wetsuits after being blown off by another surf rental shop that shall remain unnamed. They couldn't have been nicer. We bought just the right wetsuit and they rented us such a great board...in any other store you'd never get the quality they gave us....they are all about the surf experience and making sure that everyone gets a bit of that. Well after living here for four years I decided to check out the infamous Mitch's Surf shop which I see people wearing their shirts everywhere. I expected to find a huge shop full of over priced goods. What I did find was an incredibly knowledgeable and helpful staff with a no pressure environment with only the coolest clothing at reasonable prices. Matt (prob the nicest guy you've ever met) helped me pic the right suit for me. And said "the most important part of a wet suit it fit, price doesn't determine that" and well I left with a the perfect suit and a couple extra hundred in my pocket. Since then I've got a few Matuse suits from him. (They are the best feeling material and don't get water logged at all. Trust me try them you'll feel the difference) I also recommend all my friends to go down there. Because they will give honest help and not load you up. The staff, great inventory and good prices are the reason they've been around so long and have such a loyal following. read more

Mitch's is my local surf shop and I have always received great service. The selection is good, and Mitch and the other people there are always helpful and knowledgeable. I have gotten a lot of good advice from Mitch, including being talked out of buying things that I think I want, but Mitch knows is a bad idea. They are also generally cool about selling a single replacement fin rather than making you buy a whole set just to replace one fin, which is definitely appreciated. The prices are a little higher than some shops in town, but the selection, service and convenience for me make Mitch's my go to surf shop. Parking in the lot can be tight at times, and backing out of the lot is challenging, but there is usually street parking available nearby. read more

After some research I visited Mitch's ready to spend around $800 - I wanted to buy a board locally and not off the web. Mitch was there to 'help'. He bombarded me with arcane technical surf mumbo jumbo like 'planing' and 'displacement' and when asked to explain he got irritated and snapped answers. I asked him the difference between two boards and he got even more annoyed, sarcastically snapping 'there's no comparison'. I think he only wants to sell to semi-pros or above. A tip for you Mitch, let some other guy do the selling, someone with basic social and communication skills - you just lost 800 dollars. read more

In college, I was a regular here scrounging for money for wax or a new leash for a hand me down surfboard. They always have some unique t shirts and clothing available as well as great knowledge from the staff. Heck, it's always great to see Mitch there as he's super cool. My only complaint would be parking as it can get tough if you go at lunch when the nearby restaurants are busy. But I've purchased a few boards from this location as well as the Solana Beach one. Gotta love the variety of boards ranging from Takayamas, to Tudor, to Christenson... can't go wrong! I'll continue to be a customer until I'm old and grey. read more

Just walked over there from my office to check out their wetsuits on sale. Bret was incredibly helpful and super friendly. I haven't surfed since high school so being 13 yrs out of the water, it was like relearning everything all over again. He asked me a few preliminary questions and picked out a few suits for me to try on. I really didn't expect that to be such an easy and enjoyable experience. I was actually expecting some stuck up jerk with very little patience or sense of humor. But Bret was totally cool! No judgment.. just super nice! I didn't feel pressured to buy nor did he line up just the expensive suits. I ended up getting an 3/2 Xcel Infiniti full suit for $100 off the sticker price. Used to love this place, spent a lot of money there on fins, clothes, just got a replacement fin for a quad set trailer, and the fin did not fit in the box. I called to see if I could get a replacement and the guy I talked to told me to bring it in to see if someone more "competent" than me could get it to fit. Listen buddy, its a fin. A future fin. Its not my first time using these things. Its not rocket science. It fits or it doesn't, there no reason to be condescending to someone who helps to pay your salary. I don't know why so many people are talking about friggin' t-shirts. Mitch's is a SURF SHOP, and in my opinion, the only LEGIT one in the county. Here's why: I was looking for a new XCEL chest-zip long sleeve spring suit and no one else had the current year's model with the XZIP2 closure, but Mitch's did. Other surf shops went so far as to tell me that last year's model (with plain old XZIP) was current because they didn't have the new ones. That is 1) shady and 2) an insult to my intelligence. Mitch's on the other hand knew what was up, and even helped me find a size that fit me a lot better than what I was wearing before. I always thought an ML wouldn't fit right, but it was actually better than the MT I had been wearing for years. Maybe I got fat. :( read more

This place is fantastic. They've got everything you could possibly want and will order what they don't have on hand. To call Matt incredibly helpful and knowledgeable when it came to sizing a wetsuit and helping me choose the right one, is an understatement. I'd been shopping around a bit for a wetsuit, and no one gave me as much info as he did, nor did anyone ask me as many questions about what I was looking for. Today there are lots of apparel choices because, let's face it, to make a few bucks you've got to sell more than just boards, wetsuits and wax. Don't support Mitch's, Mitch is a crook! I have been coming to this surf shop for the last ten years and have bought many wetsuits and other products from here. I got some body surfing fins for a present from here for my birthday. I went to the beach to use them and tried them on but they were way to tight, so I couldn't use them. I Went back to return them for a different size and they wouldn't do it because they claimed there was a piece of sand in them. Ridiculous, I will support my other local surf shops that are good to their customers. I hope a $60 pair of fins are worth the endless amount of $ I would have spent here. read more

Head out to LJ Shores and you're likely to run into Mitch, too. Parking can be an issue so be ready to walk a block or two...parking up front is a nice surprise, but backing out into traffic can be interesting. Used to be all bunch of old blanks and stuff wetsuits Fiberglas resin that kind of stuff. Now he's got really high-end stuff in there still usually pretty good price. My boyfriend and I picked out a boogyboard here about a month ago. He enjoyed it up until yesterday when he went under a wave and the thing broke in half. Went back to the shop with the broken board and spoke with the manager. No refund and no exchange for a new board. I still use my board from the 80's. This was a new board, probably only costs less than ten bucks to make and the dude wouldn't even exchange for another one. Bad business if you want people to return. $60 bucks down the drain and you expect us to upgrade to a $350 dollar board? Try being more accommodating to the customers you already have. read more

I went into Mitch's La Jolla yesterday Sat 3/7/15 w my Brother just like the old days. Wow and who is behind the counter but Mitch himself. I first met Mitch in 1969 when I bought my Cadillac Urethane Skateboard wheels as an 8 yr old. It was nice to catch up with him ! Mitch is still going strong and as humble and nice as ever. Very friendly staff and i love that its family operated, a little boy was helping out in the shop which is how it used to be in the old days. Prices were reasonable for boogie boards it was $10 for the whole day. Whenever im back in San diego ill rent from them. read more
