I met my friends at Mitch's Tavern back in 1970 while attending N.C. State University. This is still one of the best places with a "back in the day" vibe and still keeps the long tradition alive today. I do miss the old Pin-Ball Machines and Foosball games we frequented. The essence of this cool little Bar and Restaurant lingers with those fond memories. The bar is excellent and the properly priced food speaks to the frugality of the regular student crowd. Still keep coming back here because Mitch's Tavern somehow becomes a part of you and that feeling must be renewed frequently. read more

The London Broil sandwich was a real treat. The bread was super fresh and the sandwich was juicy, flavorful, and the meat was tender. It was very inexpensive, and the waitress was attentive. I substituted a side salad for the potato chips and the tomatoes were much riper than I expected to receive at a pub in January. One of the favorite places to get lunch with my boyfriend during the week. It is pretty convenient for NC State students as it is located at Hillsborough Street. It is always busy for lunch but we never had to wait for a table. The waiters are pretty nice. I like that you can find at Mitch's all types of people. Students, professors, frat guys, company reps,... The best about Mitch's is that you can get good food at a great price and that pretty fast. I'm going to preface this by saying that I've never left a disparaging review of any business...until now. I've always really liked Mitch's Tavern and I've eaten there for years. Today, however, was hands-down the worst dining experience I've ever had in my 38 years on this planet. The boss's daughter was running the joint and clearly, she was under extreme distress despite the restaurant only being 50% full. Unfortunately, she was taking her stress out on everyone around her. She was yelling and hollering non-stop across the restaurant, "SEAT HIM AT #28!" "GIVE THEM A MENU. THEY ARE JUST SITTING THERE!" The thing that really got under my skin, however, was the way she was talking to her cooks when they accidentally sent my meal out to me without chips. Simple mistake. Super easy to fix, right? You'd think they just committed a crime. "I'VE SHOWN YOU WHERE THE COMPUTER SAYS 'NO OPTION.' IF IT'S TOO HARD FOR YOU, YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET PAID...I MEAN, IF IT'S TOO HARD FOR YOU..." I started having an anxiety attack from all that yelling and hollering. I tried to sit somewhere else but I couldn't get away from it. I'm giving the restaurant 1 star because at least she had enough critical thinking skills to wrap up my food and tell me my meal was on the house (to which I replied, "Yeah...I'd say so...") She locked the door to the restaurant (when it was half-full of people, mind you. Doesn't sound very safe in the modern times we live in, does it?) before I left and told me "I hope your day gets better." I said, "My day was fine until I came here for lunch. It looks like you're having a pretty rough time." She said, "I'm not going to apologize for the situation today. I'm locking the door and people can go eat at McDonalds. You don't have to come back.") Anyway, my actual food was really good so I don't think the cooks are the problem. Maybe the boss shouldn't pay his daughter, you know..."if it's too hard for her..." Mitch's is always a go to spot for me. Whether I want to grab a quick bite to eat between classes or if I want to enjoy some brews with friends, Mitch's never disappoints. The food is healthy, fresh and very reasonably priced! I've tried multiple items on the menu and I've enjoyed everything I've tried. Honestly guys, I've never found a place like it! The moment you finish the trek up the narrow stairs you can't help but feel comfortable. Service is excellent, food comes out fast and drink specials are decent. They also have a lot of good beers on draft, which is always a plus in my book. Mitch's attracts students, professors, and Raleigh residents around the area who are just looking for a good brew, food and conversation. If you haven't checked Mitch's out, you are missing out! I had a horrible experience here. When I ordered a VEGETARIAN burrito I was brought a meat filled one. They corrected this mistake but the new burrito still had meat in it and I found a curly black hair. I do not recommend this place if you care about cleanliness. This place is popular with my department at NCSU so it's the go to hang out. I've been a couple of time and the service is always friendly, never rushes you to order or leave. I've have the hummus and bbq sandwich, which were both great. They also have a great pear cider that is hard to find so I love coming there just to get that. Mitch's tavern has some pretty good food for excellent prices. Some of their dishes are ones that I crave regularly, such as the pan-fried green tomato sandwich, their authentic street-style tacos, the Louis Papas Salad, and Ernestina's butternut soups! My mouth is watering now! The staff back there definitely know how to cook!! However, the service here is not always the best. The younger wait staff is always friendly, fun, and deserve good tips for sure! If you come during a busy meal-time and get Sharon as your waitress, hope that she's in a jovial mood. Oof. I've heard her argue, yell at, and be downright rude to her own customers as well as her service staff almost every time I've dined here. She frequently fusses the staff out for small, fixable mistakes, or small substitutions that cost $0.50 or less. It makes for a stressful mealtime. My recommendation, sit as far from the kitchen as possible, and request anyone but Sharon as your server. And make sure you order the PFGT, the tacos, or any of their sandwich + special soup combos "hot" to get a panini type meal that's delicious! read more

This seems to be a pretty popular spot amongst the students at NCSU. It might be because the prices are very reasonable. Everything seemed to be under $8 for lunch and you get a hardier meal. It's also located right on Hillsborough street. You may want to consider it's proximity to a college campus and student life....they were really busy during lunch time. About its location...you could miss it if you're not paying attention....it's just a door and sign in-between two other establishments. You have to go upstairs and it's on the top floor. I did a to go order but their service was still good. Still attentive and communicative. My food didn't take too long to come and I didn't even call it in beforehand. As for the food it was just ok. I got the primavera pasta and it came with a salad and bread. The word I'd use to describe it is basic. The pasta sauce was watery and not very flavorful. Nothing about it made me want to get it again. They do have other options so maybe this wasn't their specialty. It was a good portion though and it did the job. It definitely wouldn't be my first choice on Hillsborough street but it wasn't necessarily bad. Plus I do feel like they have good prices for the portion and type of food you're getting. read more

Awesome little place for a bite and drinks with friends in a casual Raleigh, North Carolina atmosphere.- no glitz, just a friendly and welcoming place. It feels like you're just hanging out at an old friend's house, except that old friend has a full bar, craftbeers, a few wines bottles, and makes a mean sangria. The food is delicious, but don't take my word for it. Try a couple items on the menu. Start with a soup. I had the black bean soup, it was delicious. Then move on to a NC BBQ sandwich or burrito. I had the burrito. It was huge, and so was the flavor. Not into burrito? You're vegetarian? Try the grape leaves platter with hummus and veggies. This place isn't world of beer with a thousand beer selection, but they've got a beer for any craftbeer aficionado. I had a hoppyum IPA, a local brew, and it was awesome and yes, very hoppy. What is NOT my jam is the fact that the last two times we have been here the place is out of almost everything. The waiter tonight says "we do not have the pork tacos anymore". What does this mean to you? To myself I thought: they took them off the menu. Apparently they no longer serve pork?? The burrito I got had chicken in it instead (without telling me first) that tasted like an ash tray. Yuck! My dinner guest also thought the steak sandwich was DRY. What happened to Mitch's?! I first stumbled upon mitch's on a hot day after classes : they had a sign out front advertising limeade. I was surprised that the bar/pub was actually at the top of a steep flight of stairs! Made it feel like I had discovered something secret. The limeade was great. The food was better. I have been coming back ever since. Such a letdown.. I went to Mitch's on Saturday for lunch expecting to get the same service and quality I had the first time I went. It was a night and day difference in the experience I had. My fried green tomato sandwich had to be brought out twice to me because they kept leaving off the Fried Green Tomato,. then when I finally received the sandwich it had a pitiful one and a half slice of green tomato that wasn't even fried!!! My 21st birthday was spent there and that was the night i learned my tequila lesson (don't drink it... at least not to excess... it's not too fun.) There are way too many yuppie bars in Raleigh, so if you want to slum it with college students and bohemian types that like slumming it with college students, check out Mitch's. The first time I went to Mitch's, I got the black beans over rice. They were very good but the salsa they put on top is a little too spicy. I also split the hummus with my mom and I thought it was very good. The pitas are a good size so you can get pretty filled on those. The next time I went, I got the burrito. They don't call it a big burrito for nothing! It was filled with pork and the pork was very delicious. I thought it was probably the best burrito I've tasted. When I went back a few days ago, I got the burrito again. The pork was still delicious but the rice was undercooked and that made the burrito really hard to eat. I'll still be back because I know how good that food is! It's also really good portioning for really low prices, which is handy since I'm in college. I've been going to Mitch's since college and I still like going there from time to time for gatherings with friends or to grab a cheap dinner. It was always one of my favorite stops on the Hillsborough hike while in college. For the kind of place this is, you can't beat their prices for good bar food and cheap drinks. You take a long staircase to get into the place, which has walls covered with all kinds of strange things (including some creepy portraits). I think all of the strange things on the walls add to the character of the place. It has been around forever and there is a reason it has lasted so long. They have drink specials every night including a beer special and a liquor special , including Friday and Saturday nights. They also have martini nights on Wednesdays which has provided a spot for many girls nights for me in the past (although we recently discovered their half-price martinis are about half the size of their regular martinis). Their mystery beer night on Thursday is also fun and they choose your beers from a selection of relatively nice beers (no Bud Light!). The food is consistently good too. My favorite thing to get is the soup & Greek salad combo with the Mexican chili. All of their chili is good and I'll generally get this as the side to my meal whenever I go here, even in the summer. Josh has told me that their gumbo is good too and I used to always get the chicken salad pita, which is also good. All the prices on food are really cheap for good-sized portions. I don't think anything on the menu is over $8 or $9. I think the soup & salad combo I normally get is around $6. Rodolfo's feast is definitely a good menu choice if you are hungry or if you want left-overs the next day; this is a favorite of many of my friends who go here regularly. They have specials every day too that are worth checking out. The best part of going to Mitch's was that the beer I wanted was on a special price for the day. I ordered a vegetarian burrito and got a meat burrito. My boyfriend got chicken gumbo and it tasted like someone that has never had gumbo before made it. The pan fried green tomatoes is misleading. As a Tar Heel, maybe I shouldn't be so enthusiastic about a place so dear to the hearts of N.C. State students and alumni, but I can't help it. The bar is great. You won't necessarily go to Mitch's to meet and mingle, but if you want an escape from overcrowded, loud bars populated by image-obsessed troglodytes, this is the place. (Perhaps the fact that the men's bathroom has no mirrors helps keep self-absorbed people from hanging around for very long.) The atmosphere is very relaxing; very comfortable. The decor is eclectic, but authentic-feeling. Lots of wood. Sitting at the bar, you'd almost think you were on an old sailing vessel or something. I also appreciate the no-frills pricing here. The beer at Mitch's flows very cost-effectively, and everything on the late-night food menu (although a little uninspired) is roughly $3. Every time I've been, the bartenders have been great. I can't opine about the restaurant component of Mitch's, but I can confidently say this is a great place to bring a few good pals for a laid-back round of brews. read more

Mitch's Tavern can be easy to miss walking down Hillsborough Street; it's an upstairs restaurant with the entrance situated right next to Global Village Coffee House. But missing Mitch's Tavern is a regrettable mistake since immediately upon entering you get a warm and cozy feeling (or at least I do) as you walk up the wooden steps to a place that seems very far from the Hillsborough Street you were just on. The 'tavern' in Mitch's Tavern isn't just to indicate that they serve alcohol; it really is the quintessential quiet tavern. That's probably my favorite part about Mitch's, the quiet, yet college, atmosphere it has. That and the price! The beer is actually affordable here, and they have a few local brews on tap in addition to usually having a special. The food selection is traditional lunch fare: soups, sandwiches, and a few things like pastas. Today for lunch I had a taco special that was two tacos, absolutely loaded with pulled pork, rice, and veggies, with beans and cheese on the side. Oh and it came with two tostadas. OH and it was a only about 8 bucks. It wasn't incredible, but it was a good lunch. That's really the theme of Mitch's Tavern. A good portion of decent food and beer for a reasonable price. The price to quality ratio looks even better when you consider that you're on Hillsborough Street. I doubt I'll ever fall in love with a meal at Mitch's, but I definitely know I'm going to keep coming back again and again, whether it's for a nice lunch or a calm night out for beers. read more

Mitch's is a pleasant surprise on Hillsborough, just a creaking stairway up from the bustle below. I've only done lunch at Mitch's, so I'm not sure what kind of place is is past 1 pm. It's a funky, cozy place that reminds me of dive I ate at in college-but in a good way. The food is inexpensive, they have cold beer, and the seating is tucked all around under interesting things on the wall. The service at Mitch's has been quick and efficient, with good menu knowledge. The food was very good on the occasions I've been there. And everything I've had has been well under $10 for a nice portion size. The gumbo, while not what I'm used to (LSU grad here), was hearty and delicious and full of perfectly cooked ingredients. The black bean chili was warm and tasty, and like the gumbo, had just a touch of spice. Salads are fresh and sizeable. The cuban sandwich was chock full of tender pork. The pimento/green tomato sandwich was much loved at our table. I mentioned cold beer right? It's not a gourmet place, but what it does, it does well and at a reasonable price and quickly. For all the hype this place receives, I was extremely underwhelmed. The prices were really good and the service was good, but the food really wasn't that good. I had a turkey sandwich and gumbo. The turkey sandwich was just very dry and tasteless. Really very plain. The gumbo just wasn't very good either. I'm critical of gumbo because I've had a lot in the New Orleans/Louisiana area, but this just was not good. My girlfriend had the pasta primavera with a Greek salad. It's hard to screw up a Greek salad and the pasta primavera was just okay. Maybe the things we got just weren't good and some of the other menu items are, but my girlfriend and I were both thoroughly unimpressed with our first and probably only visit. read more

I've been coming here for about 6 years after visiting with my NCSU grad school friends (and professors!) and it's just a solid old school spot. The chicken gumbo and chef salad come with a side of saltine crackers. The London Broil sandwich and a Cuban sandwich each come with a side of ruffles chips. We like to add the chips into the sandwiches for a little extra crunch. The chef salad has fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and cubes of cheddar cheese. There are several dressing options and my favorite is the oil and vinegar. Each of the dishes is a decent portion but not overly filling. The interior of the restaurant has a lot of character. Everything is wood. The atmosphere is very fitting for this classic pub. If you are walking down Hillsborough Street this restaurant is easy to miss as it is located on the second floor. Look for the sign with the daily specials just outside of the door. Mitch's is one of my favorites places to go for a quick comment cheap meal with this and drinks. I've been to Mitch's three times because some of my colleagues like it. Twice, the server has told me that I cannot order what I want to order because it's "uninspired" and has told me what I will be eating instead. Her choices are inspiring me to never eat there again. If I wanted a salad with anchovies, onions, and for some reason potato salad on top of it, I would have ordered that. I can read the menu. I've been making my own food decisions for more than 30 years. Further, she can't seem to understand that I order Coke, not diet Coke. YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE WHAT I EAT. All of their flavors are terrible and my clothing smells like old food for the rest of the day. And if you don't eat pork, there are about three things you can actually eat if the server lets you order. Honestly, this place is terrible. I'll be skipping co-worker lunch every time they vote to go there from now on. It's not "cheap" if I have to buy a second lunch because the one I was served was inedible. read more

Way understaffed. Our waiter was literally running around and wiping his forehead. Our food was served cold when it should have been hot. We got a new plate of hot food but then the eggs were overcooked. Our waiter suggested we invited the chef to come out and talk to us, which we did, but it turned out the chef didn't want to come. Our waiter also told us that the chef insisted the eggs weren't overcooked but they totally were. read more
