I absolutely loved Mithai. I have a gluten and dairy allergy and they were more than willing to guide me through the options I had at the restaurant. The cashew bars (I can't remember the specific name of them) in particular were perfect for my dietary needs and were absolutely delicious. I asked for samosas and they said that they put cauliflower inside it, to which I was little surprised and all of a sudden the guy was asked me if I want it or not and asked me tell fast (this place was empty by the way). after I got my 4 samosas, they gave me 1 small container of chutney. I asked if they can give me another and the girl told me that they give 1 container with 6 samosas. The owner of this place has violated multiple business ethics with me. This has included racist microaggressions in person when I visited, using my contact information from an order placed to call and harass me regarding a Yelp review I posted detailing his racist behavior, responding to that review and publicly disclosing my home address, and finally followed by contacting Yelp and having the original review removed. I detail these interactions below to the best that I can given the constraints: 1. I am an Indian (a brown woman) and visited this place excitedly to purchase Diwali sweets. The owner, a white man, extensively disparaged all Indian owned restaurants in the area. The irony of a white man claiming expertise on food from a different land over nationals of that country was apparently completely lost on him. He then proceeded to ask me where I'm from. When I stated that I'm Indian, he then argued with me that I couldn't be because I didn't "sound like one" to him. This despite my stating that there are many accents in the country. I don't even mind the asking, but arguing for a ~10 minutes is just beyond me. But, the white boy, of course, is the authority on all things Indian! His behavior was so egregious that my white friend who accompanied me whispered asking if I'd like to leave. 2. Unknown to me, another friend from india decided to surprise me with an order from here. A week later, still no sweets. There was one mail from the business asking if they'd still like it delivered and were asked to do so. Yet, no sweets and also no response to two follow up mails. With the surprise ruined, I called to cancel the order. To which the owner didn't even apologize for any of this, and laughed and said "it would've been quicker for you to just drive here and buy it!" 3. I wrote a Yelp review that extensively detailed both of these instances, referring to the owner as "white boy" in my description as his behavior in #1 was exactly that. He then responded publicly disclosing my address from the order placed in #2. As is now the established norm, there was no apology or reflection on his actions, but claimed that I was lying about #2, that I was racist in calling him a "white boy", and that I have "malice against "white boys". He also sent me a Yelp message with his response. 4. But of course since that wasn't enough, he then used my phone number from the order placed in #2 to call me up. Of course no apology. But instead, told me "my dear, in this country you don't walk around calling white people white boys. That's equal to calling a black person a ni***r." This was a 15 minute call, so of course there was plenty else said all of which I recorded because I now knew enough about this person. Insisted that he couldn't be racist because he'd worked in settings with many different races. Also, let me know that he knew my address from the order, but also knew what I did. So of course had looked me up online. It ended with the "don't ever step into my shop again". Remarkably professional behavior once again. 4. Then, to top it all, he, of course, has had my original Yelp review taken down. I called up Yelp and had this confirmed. If one scrolls through the many reviews on Google (where reviews cannot be removed!), you'll see that rudeness and inability to take responsibility for anything negative is quite the go-to with this person. But using a customer's personal information to harass them violates the very code of business conduct. read more

A very nice place to experience authentic Indian sweets. When most sweet shops say that their sweets are made fresh daily, you know they don't mean it, but this place, you can feel it and just the taste alone will tell you it's fresh. They owners are very courteous and nice to talk to and the service is fast. I bought two boxes of assorted sweets which came with almost everything they had. If something didn't come in the box, they just gave it to me to try out and I must say, not even a single sweet which I could say is not good. The best is Malpua though. Just heat them with Rabri on top and you'll be delighted. It had a very unique taste of Fennel seeds which dominates the other ingredients. I tried Chole bhatura too and they are okay. The owner is a Bengali lady so I don't expect her to make Punjabi style chole bhatura but they were decent in taste. read more

Most of the concoctions are made of home made cheese. everything you buy is made on premises, and fresh, unlike Indian sweets that you will find in area Indian grocery shops, which are made in NY or NJ and shipped to the location. This shop makes the sweets to be taken out and ot necessarily to be eaten there. so you can compare it to a Chinese takeout. Don't expect atmosphere, and if the owner steps out you will most likely see the kitchen help at the counter. Sweets you will find here are made with fresh ingredients, mainly fresh milk, and cane sugar, nuts like almonds, pistachio, cashew, honey and raisins, dates. The sweets are very authentic, and very good. I was born in Kolkata, and I traveled to USA as a child with my parents,. I have tasted so called Bengali sweets in many cities for almost 50 years as we came here by way of London, New York, New Jersey. This is the only place outside of Kolkata that I was able to find the taste of Kolkata outside. I just love almost every kind of sweet they sell. My favorite are Rasmali, gulab jamun, jelibi, moti choor laddo, Misti dahi, sondesh. I always serve at any gathering at my home. If you have gotten used to stale sweets, that are at least 5 to 7 days old before they get to the shops,you will not like the freshness you will find here. Neither is this a place you want to sit for a meal as this is just a place for pick up or a quick snack. Indian sweets are meant to be eaten Fresh, as soon as its made, for the real authentic taste and flavor. I absolutely love this place. Came here on a complete whim and SO glad I did. Even though the shopping center itself isn't somewhere I'd typically stop, we decided to walk around and see what ethnic excitement we could find. Despite my faux pas, the owner was really helpful and telling us what spices each pastry was and the differences between various desserts. Unlike Rajbhog or the Rajbhog display @ Around the World Market, Mithai's desserts are pre-packaged and you cannot pick and choose. However, I think the quality of the desserts are better than Rajbhog even if there is less diversity and freedom. But the pre-packaged desserts last a while (DO NOT TRY TO EAT THE WHOLE BOX, YOU WILL GET SICK!). It took two of us around 1.5 weeks of regular snacking to finish the whole box. This is my favorite place for fulfilling my sweet and savoury craving. I am spoilt for choice. I totally love all the sweets be it the Malai Chumchmlum,the mango sandesh or the Almond Barfi. I can't believe I've never written an review about this amazeball. Let me first say, that the owner of this place is the nicest, most patient man I have ever come across in an establishment. I'm not familiar with most Indian dessert, besides gulab jamun at my high school best friend's house where I was the "Jazz" at. (prince of bel air ref). Basically, I ask a lot of questions. There are over 20 different types of snacks there that encompasses a lot of different flavours. Almonds, pistachios, chickpeas, cardamon, cachews, you name it! If it's your first time there, I recommend getting the variety pack (there are two kinds - one dairy/wet and one dry). Both are amazing. You can also get some snacks individually if they have some extras that's not already pre-packaged (you have to ask). They also have mango, rose, plain lassi that's only $1.50. AND kulfi (which is like a ice-cream kind of thing) for $1. It comes in a generic sauce cup, so it's not very big. There's also a 10 dollar minimum for credit cards, so be sure to bring some cash! read more

I'd never really had Indian desserts, which is at least sort of weird because I love Indian food. So, I was excited to "discover" this place one day when I was doing errands in Cary. And, I was surprised that I had such a bad experience considering all of the other good reviews. It is in a strip mall, and "dessert shop" is a bit of a euphemism. It's more like a counter and two large refrigerators with assortments of desserts in them. Definitely no ambiance. I walked in one afternoon and the proprietor was on the phone. He looked annoyed that I'd come in, and stayed on the phone. I waited for about five minutes, reading the menu and pacing back and forth between the counter and the refrigerated section. I--somewhat obviously--wasn't a regular and had no idea about these Indian desserts. Still no word from him (even just "This is important" or "Just a minute" would have been great). Eventually I pull a random assortment from the refrigerator and paid (he wasn't too busy to tell me the cost or take my money). I really didn't want a whole huge box, just a few individual things to taste, but I couldn't figure out a way to do that without his help. So I ended up with an assortment of eight gooey balls with different colors and flavors (although to be honest, I couldn't much tell the difference--they all tasted like some sort of cake soaked in milk and honey). I ended up throwing 2/3 of it away because I found out that the taste and texture of the Indian desserts just wasn't for me. And it's a shame because the assortment pack was surprisingly expensive for what it was (came out to $9 I think?). I went for over a year thinking that I hated Indian dessert. NOT TRUE. I gave them another chance at Around the World market and I loved their selection (and I could order just a few at the time). So it was actually just these that I didn't like. read more

Everything he recommended was amazing - super rich and flavorful. The mixed-bengali sweets box : pricey at $8, but some/most of it was really quite good. 2. Mango and Cardamom Kulfi : the frozen, creamy desert thingy. Sweet and flavorful and not bad at $1 a pop. Overall I realized the reason I like this place is that : unlike most other Indian sweets, or pre-packaged ones that you get at regular stores, this guy really uses quality ingredients (goat-cheese, sugar, cream, dry-fruits and spices primarily). I genuinely cannot imagine sweets and snacks getting any better than what you'll get at Mithai. My girlfriend brought me here some time ago and it has been our go-to place whenever we're feeling peckish or simply want to lighten up our day a bit. For the quality they offer, I would gladly pay double. There is a wide selection of treats, savory and sweet, and as far as I can tell, they are ALL delicious. The spices are robust but never overpowering, the sweetness is smooth but never nauseating. The owners are fantastic people, always happy to help and explain what a motichoor laddu, lavang latika, or sandesh is. In fact, they go above and beyond what I would accept as a standard for customer service. Genuine helpfulness, reasonable prices, and pleasant conversation, that's what you can expect here. I am from Bengal and this place has the most authentic Bengali sweets I have tasted in the USA. They were fresh and delicious. However the American guy (who made it quite clear that he is the owner) also gives you the feel of being in a local Kolkata sweet shop by appearing to be rude. I know most of these sweets but was confused about one. He explained it but came out as very rude which I usually did not experience in my decade so far of being in the states. This small Indian snack and sweet shop will blow your mind. They specialize in East Indian (Bengali) sweets made from the freshest and best local milk sourced from a top notch dairy right here in NC. Their sweets are extremely authentic in taste, texture and flavor - all that with no, none, nada, zero preservatives. We had an excellent and detailed walkthrough about the world of fine Bengali sweets by the very friendly owner, who is a retired professor. He was very warm hearted and his enthusiasm for the food, the business, customers really won us over. We ordered 6 Samosas, Bhel Puri, Chhole Bhature and Rasmalai. Our original order was just 2 samosas. After we were pleasantly surprised how great those were, we just kept ordering. The food was that good. We also took a couple of boxes of their sweets (chocolate coffee Sandesh and another one with an assorted mix) to-go. Those were extremely tasty too. Everything about this place is 5/5. Please note that all the previous reviews (older than Jan 2016) are not valid anymore since this place has a new owner and I'll start with her first. She is very friendly, knowledgeable and honest. She'll not only introduce you to the different things on the menu but will also admit to the fact that a few of the sweets (esp. the khejuri sandesh) will not taste as good as the ones you get in Kolkata (India). However, everything on her menu is fresh. The quality is great and I liked everything I had there. I tried the kochuri, vegetable chop, mango sandesh and khejuri sandesh. In fact, I bought some "khejuri sandesh" so I could enjoy it at home as well. The owner is working hard on re-vamping the place and the food and she is doing a great job so far. First off, I don't think I'm a giant fan of Indian desserts. Which is weird, because I'm a HUGE fan of Indian entrees. And a pretty big cheerleader for dessert in general. I expected to be the proverbial kid in a candy shop here. The menu is posted above the counter, but listed all sorts of stuff I'm just not familiar with. Luckily, there are also variety packs available -- dry and dairy. Head to the back of the store where all the treats are packaged and refrigerated, and grab what you like. I chose the dairy-based variety pack, attracted to all the pretty colors, and thinking they might at least bare a resemblance to some sweets I'm familiar with -- like rice pudding or mango lassi. Speaking of, I ordered a mango lassi to go too (they also have rose lassi available). The owner whipped it up, and it was absolutely refreshing -- and cheap! The dessert pack ... wellllll ... they're all like a pastry ball that you've left soaking in milk too long. A texture that takes getting used to, and to be honest, they all sort of tasted the same to me. There was a little variation in that some were more pronouncedly sweet than others. A friend told me the trick is to eat them slowly with a hot cup of tea. But uh, I'll probably just stick to the lassi. UPDATE: Upgrading my rating to 4 star. Quality of sweets are consistently good. I recommend buying sweets from this shop. I don't think there is any other shop in triangle area which can match quality of sweets. I ordered samosas over phone, my order was taken and time was confirmed. When I reached to pick up samosas I was told it is sold to someone else and now I have to wait for 15 mins if I want to get samosas. They told me to run some errands and come back to pick up samosas later. This is the second time I have faced this terrible service, another time I was asked to wait for 15 mins for my order, I told them that I will be back in 10 mins but they forced me to pay first for the order saying I might not come back to pick up my order. I mean what kind of restaurant is this? I have been coming here for past one year once a month at least. Now, why I come here after such humiliation you may ask? It is because my wife loves their sweets and samosas. So, here I am waiting for my samosas in the rain. I wish there is another restaurant here which serves Bengali sweets so they I don't have to come here again ever!! read more

We discovered Mithai about a year ago and have been going back ever since. Mithai has a nice selection. We've bought several types of Laddu, Almond and Pista Burfi, Pink Chum-Chum (this is the cheese dessert that the other reviewer Melodie referred to). It is a pink cheese ball that is sweet, covered in coconut and sugary syrup (not my fave, but glad I tried it). The best thing at Mithai is their jalebi. If you have not yet discovered jalebi, they are tiny little fried dough tubes that look a bit like pretzels, dyed in different colors, mostly red, orange, yellow. They are drenched in the sweetest sugary syrup. They are so sweet you can only eat a little at a time. Why buy the refrigerated jalebi at Indian markets when you can buy fresh at Mithai? The owner of Mithai is a very nice man named George. He seems quite happy for your business and is eager to tell you what is fresh. This place is well worth the visit. read more

I moved to Raleigh for the first time for 3 months on 20th May and went to try the sweets from Mithai on 21st. It is not advertised or promoted at all, but a Bengali always has a nose for her authentic rosogolla!! And Mithai not only made me happy but exceeded all expectation. I ate Fulkopir singara, a very traditional Bengali snack after ages... The kalojam reminded me of my childhood. Refused to try the mango sondesh as I'm a purist, but I urge everyone to try this place out at least once. It will make your day for sure. read more
