I've gone to Mitri for a few years now for haircuts and they always do a wonderful job but this was my first time going in for a dye. My experience as a whole was great! I was able to get an appointment right away and my stylist was ready to go when I came (no extra wait upon arrival). I had my inspiration picture ready and Mark did a wonderful job in making it come to life. We both underestimated how much hair I had (and how thick it was) which led to us scheduling a second appointment to do more lights but both times, Mark was professional, timely and I left with beautifully styled hair. Mark and Tony are fricken' awesome!! Guys, if you need a good fade, comb over, etc. come here!! Ladies, you can come here as well. I've seen both Mark and Tony w/ female customers too. They are well-rounded in their craft! They've also got other pretty ladies who cut hair too. It's always crowded, which is a good sign. I believe they take walk-ins (don't quote me on this), but I'd call for an appt if you are in a rush or have other things to do. Very old style of hair blowout: low volume, top of the hair so flat, curls just at the of the hair. The stylist couldn't see the type of the hair from beginning( thin, soft strands) and straightened my hair, applied oil(!!!)and made it much harder to make it curly next, and he had apply much more product on my hair to keep the curls on my hair! read more

I love Tony and Mark. Everytime they cut my hair it always comes out amazing. I took my little kids here for the first time and they were so gentle and patient. My littlest one has never had a haircut outside the home due to her fear of having strangers cut her hair. When Tony saw she was afraid he gave her a notebook and pencil to draw, she drew pictures while standing and he talked to her the entire time, allowing her to stand and move while cutting her hair. Price is reasonable and my hair stylist Mark is quite nice and fast. The reason I only I gave it 3 stars was due my last haircut experience. Mark wanted to trim my hair after he has removed the cover/wrap, but he didn't help me to put the wrap back and just started trimming my hair and let them fall on my cloth. Let me first start by saying, I usually don't write reviews, but this place was so great I felt like I just had to get the word out. I came in to get my hair dyed and a trim. Lan was my stylist and she was UH-MAZING. She first felt my hair and suggested how I should take care of it (I definitely appreciated this). She was obviously very knowledgeable (she could see breaks in my hair and knew I tied my hair up a lot, I was very impressed). Lan was very quick and very precised. It took her about 2 hours to ombre my hair. The 2 hours were very enjoyable, and I felt very relaxed the entire time. All I said before she started was, "I just want my hair to be more blonde" and she knew exactly what to do and achieved a color that I absolutely loved. After, she trimmed my hair. I've been to places where I would say "take 2 inches off", but they would end up cutting a lot more off... here, 2 inches means 2 inches and I liked that they stuck to what I wanted. Once all the coloring and cutting was done. She took the time to style my hair. I would say Lan is a perfectionist, and I love that about her. She took her time to make sure every curl was perfect. I left feeling like a ROCKSTAR. I came in with dry damaged hair with a hair color I liked, but did not love. I left with an amazing hair color and my hair really did feel healthier. After my daughter turned 4 my husband and I decided it was time for a real hair cut. Before I'd take her to a best friend's mom to trim her bangs. I made an appointment with Sara. She's great with kids being a mother herself. My daughter was very comfortable and we got to keep her baby hair that was trimmed. Since then my daughter and I will see Sara on the same day for our trims and cuts :) Tony and Mark are really nice guys. Every time I go Mark always asks if I wanted something to drink or if I want to use their wifi. Tony is always friendly and talks to us. A great bunch of people to be around. Worst haircut I ever got. Tony should not operate. (I doubt he has a license) I asked to keep the length, it took me a long time to grow. I specifically said that and just to get the ends. While Tony was working on it, I couldn't see what he was doing. The result was shocking. He cut off 3 inch of my hair. Whatever is left has so many random layers, it looks extremely thin. The right side is longer than the left, even after telling him he did not fix it all the way. It literally feels like someone did something to your body without your consent. And now I have to live with it for at least a year until it grows back. After I said I don't like it, Tony gave me $10 off and said it would grow back. I feel deeply hurt and regret ever going there. This review is way overdue, considering I have been going to Mark for over 10 years now. I found Mark back in 2002 when I first moved to CA in a studio in the old Sunnyvale downtown area across from Macy's. He has always been very consistent and thorough about giving me great cuts at a reasonable price. I feel that Mark's cuts are the same quality as name brand ones like Aveda, and I can go more often because his prices are so reasonable. i have thick asian hair that grows out a cut in a month flat, so being able to go regularly to Mark has been awesome. As a happy coincidence, my now husband (then boyfriend) regularly goes to Tony. We didn't know we went to the same hair salon until after we started dating. Fast forward a few years, and I just brought my daughter in to Mark for her first haircut. Mark is a hair god. In the months leading up to my wedding I only trusted him to cut and color my hair. The prices for a cut at Mitri are very reasonable ($45-ish), but me, being cheap as I am, opted to go to a less expensive salon after the wedding. After a really hideous haircut (where I learned the cutter took too much off one side and then had to even it out and it still wasn't quite right afterwards) I decided that I'd splurge and spend the extra $10 (I know - $10 that's all it was at most!) and go to Mitri in the future. Plus, he styles it really well. Most salons I can't wait to wash it and style it myself because they've done a piss poor job. My haircuts here are always flawless. Mark isn't the overly effusive haircutting type that will get to know your life story, but he gives a damn good cut. read more

I came across this salon while dining out at Yuki Sushi, right next to Mitri's. I decided to try this hair salon and let me tell you that Tony is fantastic. I hadn't gotten a haircut in 6 mo. It was fried from all the hair straightening I'd done. He took great care in listening to what I wanted, helped to texture and layer my long hair and kept my bangs so that they could grow out. My hair looked fabulous, just fell naturally. The prices are great, $45, for a women's haircut and plus they're open until 9 p.m. I'll definitely be coming back! UPDATE 10/13/07 ====================================================== I had my haircut in July and just this past Sat. and both times, I've just felt plain let down by the quality of the haircut and the service. My haircut in July was just a trim and to get my bangs cut. I usually show my stylist a picture of what I want b/c I've had those experiences where if you don't show your stylist what you want, then you'll end up with f%!d up haircut. I think he just glazes over the picture, doesn't take the time to listen to what I want. I just feel that there's no personal attention. There should be! After all, this is MY hair! I have to live with the results! So after my haircut in July, it just grew out to be this out-of- control mess. My bangs were in such bad shape. He could have cut in such a way where when it grew out, it wouldn't look so fobby. Now this past Sat., I got my haircut again. So after not getting the color and look that I wanted with my previous dye job, I was referred to Lan by a couple friends who highly recommended her. Lan did an ombré and Balayage on me and helped me get the color I wanted. I freaking love my hair now! I would highly recommend Lan to anyone looking for a change in their hair style. She is great at what she does and she takes her time. In fact, mine took 3 hours to complete but it was all so worth it! Thanks so much Lan! I've followed Mark Nguyen through three salons and now he's opened his own with Tony. Mark belongs in the Castro, but lucky for us he's planted himself in south bay. He's got metro skills at suburban prices (under $40 for a long-haired girl cut, and you can get a coupon on his website). He especially knows Asian hair. I've recommended him to my cousin, my aunt, my mom, coworkers and friends - everyone loves him and goes back for more! Update winter'08: I have to say, these guys are awesome at hair cuts and highlights, but they don't know the first thing about punky hair color. I found this place on a whim over a year ago because I wanted a shampoo and blow dry. I dropped off my son at daycare and called around to see if anyone can take me immediately. Lucky me, Mitri was able to take me in immediately. I was greeted by Mark and we proceeded to wash my hair. Mark told me that Tony would be blow drying my hair. I sat at Tony's chair and he came in and started to ask me which side I parted my hair. As soon as I told him, he worked his magic. In less than 30' I walked out of there looking fab. I got a hair cut by Tony today. Chopped off 2 inches. Paid 50$ without tip. The salon itself is small but clean which I like very much and there is plenty of parking over there. (the area is kinda dead). I like my hair cut overall it's decent since I didn't want to drive to SF to my usual place for a hair cut (will go when I am due for my japanese hair straightening). The layers are not too small and I am happy that he didn't thin out my hair which would make me look like a big mushroom. Big layers and cute bangs (that doesn't scream I am asian).
