I had the distinct pleasure of working with Kien and Plamena. I'd been coloring my hair at home for years and was ready to take my hair back to a more natural state. Giving zero stars for destroying my hair and not caring. I have been going here to see Bill for two years now. I showed him a picture of the color I wanted and after sitting in his chair for five hours I left with maroon hair. Not at all what I asked for nor what he said he could do. I left with maroon hair! I asked for a refund and he refused and so did the salon. I had to get my money back from Amex. Once they saw the pictures there was no question and Amex fully refunded me. The salon says they are all independent contractors which they don't tell you up front. Yet you pay at the salon desk and on your cc statement it says IVO salon. To be independent contractors you need to pay the stylist not the company desk. In either case neither the owner or Bill the stylist would make it correct and do the right thing. The owner wouldn't even return a phone call. So beware. I have never posted reviews of a business. But the way I was treated and the color of my hair left me no choice. read more

I've been seeing Jacob for over a decade now. He's the only one I trust with my hair. I've recently moved to LA and refuse to see anyone else - he is a magician worth booking a flight for! If you have thick, coarse, curly hair he's your guy. I've struggled my whole life to find someone who can give me a proper haircut and blowout, so thankful for Jacob and his expertise! Fantastic salon. So good that I drive there for every haircut even though I live way up in Truckee.

I have two issues with Ivo x Umbrella salon that made me question their practices and integrity as a business. The first issue was when I went in for a gloss treatment; the treatment overall turned out great, and I appreciated how the stylist listened to what I wanted and gave suggestions during the consultation portion of the appointment. However, when it came time to pay, the price that the stylist stated was not what was listed on the booking page. I wish there was more transparency in pricing on their page for services that are "à la carte" versus when you combine services for appointments. The next huge issue was when I came back almost two weeks later for a Brazilian Blowout. At this point in time, I was aware that the use of the OG Brazilian blowout formula was banned in California, so walking into the appointment, I expected the stylist to use the new Brazilian blowout formula sans formaldehyde. Not the case. He instead price gouged me by saying that the price listed on the website (I believe it was around 350) was for the OG treatment, but if I wanted the new formula, it would cost around 475. I was overwhelmed and shocked by the price difference that I ultimately chose to move forward with the OG formula. The entire appointment, I felt uneasy and tried to make light of the situation, but when I could see my stylist whispering and giggling with other stylists RIGHT BEHIND ME about how they got me to use the OG formula, it felt extremely uncomfortable and unprofessional. At the end of the day, I paid for my services and left. To top this experience off, my hair went back to its frizzy texture within three weeks, which makes me believe that I was duped again and was given the Brazilian Blowout Express treatment . For context, a Brazilian blowout should last approximately 2-3 months. Overall, I was left feeling disheartened with my experience at Ivo x Umbrella salon. read more

Previously, I have had amazing experiences at this salon. Phat was my stylist. Charged me $200 for a basic root touch up, depositing color on roots, nothing fancy. Tried to upsell me, haircut $250 and some other random things. Then left my hair a mess. This is not my expectation from a high end salon like this OR when I'm paying $200 for a root touch up. This review is overdue as I've been going to Jacob for almost 8 years now; followed him from Bedlam to Umbrella and now Ivo. For context, my hair is waist length, coarse, unruly, and thick. Yes, it's a hot mess but that did not scare Jacob away! Before coming to Jacob, it would take other stylists 6-8 hours to finish my highlights and I thought that was the norm. Come to find out, Jacob can do highlights, a Brazilian blow out and a haircut all under 4. Mind blown! From then on, I have never let anyone else touch my hair. The fostered trust was built around his consistent results, his valued open/honest opinions and how safe I felt in every single decision made without the added judgment or snarky comment. You see, I am a busy working mom of 2 so it is challenging at times to prioritize "me" time as there's always something that takes precedence. I also don't have time to research what is trending or what would look good on me. I highly depend on Jacob's expertise and with confidence, just let him do his thing. I sit and relax without having to think or verbalize what I want. This is the kind of therapeutic down time I need but still can multi-task and respond to work emails. Despite my crazy schedule, I make it a point to see Jacob every 4-5 weeks for root touch ups with haircuts every 3 months, for a Brazilian blow out every 6 months and highlights every year. I know that may sound excessive but I am over 40 so my grays grow back quickly and I am not yet ready to sport the "grombre" or the "salt & pepper" look. Call me vain but I just love the way I look and feel after leaving Jacob's chair esp on days when I am running low on fumes. My husband also appreciates that I come home refreshed and in a good mood after every appointment. So if you can relate and is looking for a stylist who is efficient, an expert at his craft and delivers consistent results, stop scrolling and book an appointment with Jacob! DO NOT book with Jacob--worst stylist ever! This was the most terrible salon experience of my life. Jacob was incredibly rude, unprofessional, and completely unwilling to do his job. He lacks both skill and basic customer service, and on top of that, he showed clear discrimination. I waited 10 days for this appointment, traveled an hour by bus, and walked 20 minutes in heavy rain and wind--only to be turned away for no reason. Given how expensive this salon is (the highest prices I found on Yelp), I expected professionalism and at least a decent haircut. Instead, Jacob refused to cut my hair from the moment I walked in. He looked annoyed, never smiled, and made it clear through his words, attitude, and expressions that he did not want to cut my hair--simply because he disliked me (I strongly felt it was because I'm Chinese). I asked for a shoulder-length cut and told him I was open to his professional input. In the past, when I brought photos, some styles didn't suit me, so this time I wanted his expertise. Instead of helping, he stubbornly demanded pictures. When I showed him real images--screenshots from hairstylists' videos and movies--he dismissed them, falsely claiming they were AI-generated. He insisted that layered haircuts wouldn't look good, even though I had gotten them before and knew they suited me. When I asked if he could design something flattering, he flat-out refused. He argued against everything I said, made no effort to understand what I wanted, and simply kept repeating that he didn't want to cut my hair and that I should leave. Let's be clear: I wasn't asking for anything complicated, just a basic shoulder-length cut with layers--something every competent stylist should know how to do. Other stylists have cut beautiful layers for me before, and my straight hair has always looked great without any special styling. Yet Jacob, either due to lack of skill or sheer laziness, acted as if layers were some impossible request. His excuse? That a haircut "must be styled at home" and that he "can't cut anything that looks good" without extra effort. That is simply absurd. A skilled stylist can give a great cut that looks good even after washing. Jacob clearly lacks the ability and instead blames the client. From start to finish, he repeatedly said he didn't "feel comfortable" cutting my hair and wanted me to leave. Their loud music made it difficult to have a conversation with him, but I still repeatedly tried to communicate with him, he firmly stated that he would not cut my hair and ordered me to leave. He even shouted at me to stop talking! And he didn't want to have a conversation, didn't want to put in any effort, and clearly didn't care about providing a decent service. If that's the case, why should anyone pay $140 for this kind of treatment? To make things even worse, when I left, the two front desk staff whispered, "She's weird," further mocking and humiliating me. Instead of feeling guilty for wasting my time and treating me so badly, they doubled down on their disrespect. This salon clearly believes they are above their customers--that people should beg them for a haircut. In reality, they have no skill, no professionalism, and no basic human decency. Nothing about this place is worth the outrageous prices. I will never return, and I urge everyone to avoid this awful salon. If you value your time, money, and dignity, stay far away! read more

I was very disappointed in the haircut I got from Bill. I walked in with thick curly hair and ask for a trim and shape. I also emphasize that I wanted to maintain my curls. You can tell as soon as you walk in that the stylists are the real deal here- they have just a way of carrying themselves and a level of professionalism and expertise that you really don't see anywhere else. The design inside is very simple- yes they have products, but the products aren't the bread and butter- it's the techniques and craftsmanship of the hair artists here.
