Unfortunately I didn't have a good experience. It felt like he was in a rush. I came into the appointment right on time, went into the room and see he was still chatting with a guest. I said sorry and stepped outside. They continue to chat, I waited outside for around 8 more mins ( I was about to leave, now I think about it I should have). He washed my hair and used the towel to quickly dry it, immediately use the same towel to wrap around my neck. Since the towel was damp, that immediately triggered a rash on my neck. He cut my hair while my hair was dripping wet, dripping water wet. I was shocked and thought what? The whole time it felt like he was rushing me and rushing to the next appointment. Blow dried my hair quick. Since the customer is immediately lined up the next, When I left my hair still hasn't fully dried. I have to go back to the salon and ask him to use a blow dryer again because it felt damp. For what I paid $60 it felt unprofessional. read more

Located in a small studio amongst a whole selection of salons, Mitsuru Hairmates is for sure the best! While you do have to call to set up an appointment, it's super easy and fast. I'm surprised it's not more booked up; when I called, there were slots open as soon as the next day. I came here for the first time because of an impulse decision to chop off 6 inches of hair. I was very nervous because I'd never cut my hair so short, but it was executed exactly as I envisioned. The check-ins throughout the process made me feel confident that I was going to have a good result. The wash, cut, and dry only took around 45 minutes, but there was no cost to attention to detail. I wanted my hair cut to a shorter length and after a lot of research, I'm glad I found this place. It's frightening to get short length haircuts because it can end depressingly bad, but thank goodness Mitsuru is talented. I got a subtle asymmetrical long bob. He only used a styling cream and gentle low heat with a diffuser to style my hair. His explanation was comically true, I came into the salon with super dry hair, and he was not going to expose harsh heat to it. So when he was finished, my hair was the tiniest bit damp, but when it dried, it was beautiful. This pic is after 5 hours leaving his studio. I will be using an air dry styling cream as he strongly recommended. Mr. Mitsuru cut and permed my hair on October 30th. The first time he permed my hair, it was still straight, so I went back to him, he was very polite and permed it for me again. We agreed that was a communication issue. However after the second time, my hair was still straight, especially the bottom and right side hair. So I went back to him, he looked at my hair and said "omg it is bad, but I cannot do the third time any more", which is understandable and I did not want to perm my hair for too many times either. I have been going to get my haircut with Mitsuru since 2009 and I always love my cut (I have tried all different lengths of hair styles) and even after a few months and my hair has grown out it still retains a nice shape. I always get compliments after getting a cut. Mitsuru is always attentive and really listens to what you want. When I try out a hairdresser for the first time, I usually tend to keep an eye out for these three traits 1) do they know how to cut asian hair well, that of course, is very important 2) do they maintain a good balance of surface level chatiness without talking my ear off? 3) they do not try to up sell me on products in their salon (I have a hard time saying no). When I visited Mitsuru for the first time, he hit all these three traits on the head - which is why I keep coming back! His salon is located in one of the Phenix owned buildings, he has a small little boutique salon within the building. I usually call a week in advance for an appointment & he does a very good job of following up on voicemails if he doesn't answer. Mitsuru is a very soft spoken man but he holds excellent conversations, having lived in Japan and New York - there's always something to talk about & he's good at maintaining a quiet calm without it being awkward. He also checks with me throughout the haircutting process to make sure it's what I want, which I find very helpful so things can't stray too off course if that so happens to be the case (which it never has). He trained with all different hair types and is enthusiastic to learn about all the new trends, so he does a great job if you are ever looking to get something drastic or trendy done. & lastly, he does not hawk any products, ever. I loved the products he used during my shampoo-ing process I tried asking him about it and he showed me the name of the product and told me its' uses without ever trying to encourage me to purchase them through him. Mitsuru does it again! This time I wanted to switch my purple to blue hair. Consulting with Mitsuru he had me do a patch sample strand to make sure the color is to our liking first. After almost 5months since I last bleached and colored my hair, Mitsuru bleached the purple out, and put the blue on. To my surprise my hair is still soft and he even recommended using Olaplex as well. At first we were both taken aback of the green tones in some of the blue color but honestly, it looks wonderful! I spent over $250 here and did the perm wave. The hairstylist did minor cut to reshape my hair before perm. I spent about 2 hours for the perm. Surprisingly the wave lasts over 4 months. I didn't like the wave that much in the beginning because it's too small and not meeting my style expectations. The hairstylist told me that my hair is thin and weak, so it can't hold bigger wave. After perm was done, I didn't see any nice hair wave. After few days, the wave starts to show after I washed my hair. I don't know if it's normal or not. I got my haircut with Yuki and he was very sweet. I am soft-spoken myself, but appreciate how comfortable he made me feel to speak up, when cutting my hair. He would always ask if I was okay before he cut my hair and would check on my from time to time to make sure I was okay with the length - something other hairdressers do not ask. I had a haircut (short style) and my niece had a fringe trim. He listens to you and does exactly what you want. Of course he will give you recommendations if you ask for it. As some other reviewers said, it did not take him too long to finish my hair, but my hair looks great. My niece, who is very picky about the way her fringe should look, is very happy too. I watched how he sectioned and cut my niece's hair at the front, small section by section. Very meticulous. He told me he spent 16 years in NYC before he moved to this area in 2016. He is happy to live here and I am happy he moved here too! By the way, he charges $50 for a haircut. I paid $80-100 in NYC. read more

But I am very disappointed after I washed my hair. Two layers on the back, inner layer is longer, out layer is shorter, not even straight. Literally this haircut deserves a "Woohoo! As good as it gets!!!!" So all the reviews are from his former clients in New York, so I'm happy to bridge the gap and be Mitsuru's first review in Dallas - which is perfect, since I'm a former nyc client who now lives in Dallas. Background - Mitsuru cut my hair for 5 years when I was living in the city and the cut was always fantastic. I was super bummed to have to find a new haircut joint down here when I moved to Dallas - but when I found out 2 months ago that he was moving down here, I instantly switched back to him. Current update - Mitsuru hasn't lost a step. The new joint in the Phenix salons is clean, easy to get to (right off the tollway) and there's tons of parking. The cut itself is still perfect - if you're an Asian guy and think you have a tough mop of hair to cut, he's the best. Why? A) he's good at cutting Asian hair, B) he only uses shears (no clippers), C) he's a perfectionist and will spend as long as it takes, and D) you get a wash before and after with a mini shoulder massage thrown in for extra measure. Finally the best part is that you're getting a legit Japanese nyc-style haircut... but at Dallas prices. Summary - simply the best haircut you can get at what I consider to be super-reasonable prices. This is my go to solon. I tried a lot of Asian stylists in dallas and got frustrated by some of them because they trimmed and layer that way made my hair look more messy and less neat. Finally I found my go to stylist solon mitsuru. The owner is Japanese. He is very professional. He gave me very good and practical suggestions on maintaining neatness of my hair. He knows how to layer and trim to make hair look nice and healthy in a short time.( some stylists even took longer time and couldn't finish with good layer or the style I want). He always can get to the point very fast, I mean he knows how to cut the style you like if you show the picture. Also he can provide neat and reasonable suggestion for you if he thinks the style is not fit your hair quality or your face shape. It's been proved very right . So, I trust him. I know it's a little bit expensive than other Asian Solons. But when I spent less with other stylists, i came back upset for one month. From the conversation with him, he used be a solon manager in NYC for 16 years . He is knowledgeable, technical and talented in this industry. I referred my friends go there. They all like him.
