OMG! One of my coworkers introduced me to this place by bringing me one of their treats, and I fell in love instantly! The butter mochi was absolutely incredible--every bite was soft, chewy, buttery, and heavenly. I can't wait to visit their store soon and try more of their delicious goodies!

Mochi at $3 / piece (CASH ONLY) and so much variety (like 15-20?) - yes please! On a weekend afternoon, expect a short 5-10 minute wait in line, though this line really moves quick. I had their yomogi, and at the time of visit 4 had already sold out! Having only ordered one, there really isn't much of an aesthetic wrapping other than a paper bag to enjoy the sweet treat. Thoughts? It was super chewy with a good amount of filling. Despite debates of taking a picture after a bite, the decision was not to, since it would have been wayyy less aesthetic with how much I was salivating for that next bite. My favorite part was how this brought back nostalgia of visiting Japan and ordering from those small street-side shops.

Ordered 16 pieces and between my family of 6, it didn't make it back home. SO SO GOOD. The texture is perfection and the flavors are so delicious. Will be back!!! And ordering more for sure. Service was friendly.

4.8 stars. Very soft and chewy mochi. I think it has the perfect consistency and it's not extremely sweet. The flavor options are plentiful but my favorite is their Sakura flavor. Each piece is $3, which is a bit pricey, but for an occasional treat, it's not too bad. The turn around rate is pretty quick so I've never had to wait too long for my order. Overall, if you're a fan of mochi, definitely give this place a try!

$3 per piece now. Check Instagram for ChiChi Dango flavors. I like the azuki for the earthy taste and the butter mochi for savory but sweet. Favorite is the strawberry or raspberry ChiChi Dangos but they also have pineapple, peach and mango.

Ordered: Green Tea Manju ($3 each): rice flour, matcha, smooth azuki bean Chi Chi Dango Manju ($3 each): fruit flavored mochi without beans Butter Mochi ($3 each): rice flour, eggs, milk Aya's take: I'm now realizing I've never had authentic mochi/manju and I've been missing out! Shuei-Do Manju is a hole in the wall, with a simple menu, and operating out of a grab & go window. The Green Tea Manju practically melted in my mouth. It's soft, pillowy, and the texture wasn't too gummy (which some mochis tend to be). The Chi Chi Dango Manju was fruity and more chewy with great flavor. We were lucky to try the Butter Mochi which they only have from Fri-Sun. This was delectable. Buttery, soft, rich with a subtly savory depth and slight sweetness to it. One of my favorite tries of 2026 so far!

Ever since the mochi store in SF Japantown closed, I haven't had a chance to get a hold of fresh mochi except for a couple occasions when I'm in Sacramento area. I'm so happy to find out about this store since I'm in SJ more than Sacramento. The outer layer of the mochi is so soft and fresh. Recommend there early on the weekend. Some flavors were sold out around 2PM. There was no line when we got there on a Saturday but a few groups of people were standing in front of the store debating what to order. Definitely worth a try.

Stopped for another round of treats! It was my partner's 1st time trying manju so we ordered a mix of flavors. Queue was only 2 people on mid-Saturday so we placed & received our order super-quickly. Staff was kind, shop is wonderful as always. You can't go wrong with any of the flavors, especially the butter mochi and pink white.

Third time having mochi from shuei-do! You cannot go wrong with any of the flavors as they are soft, chewy and have distinct tastes for each flavor profile.

It's a very small shop and it's been around forany years. Before Covid, they used to let you go inside the store and look through the counter to choose what you want. Now they block off the inside and you order at the counter on the side of the street (pictures are shown by the cashier), wait on the street until your order is ready. Their mochi is the best. It's very soft and not too sweet. They have many different flavors and fillings to choose from. There's no other shop around make mochi like them. They often sell out certain ones early. If you want everything, it's better to go there early before they sell out. During the weekend, they also have special flavors available and usually those specials sold out fast. There's usually a line outside the store, so it's pretty easy to find. They only open 4 days out of the week, so make sure to check their opening days/times before going.

Ever since benkyodo closed in SF, I've been on a mission to find another mochi shop. Shuei-Do fits the bill. There is only a take-out window, but they have fresh chi chi dongo daily and a variety of mochis. We only had the guava chi chi dongo and butter mochi. The guava was delicious. Can't wait to come back to try more. Mochi is $3/piece. Line started forming around 10:15am

Shuei-Do Manju Shop in Japantown San Jose is one of my go-to spots whenever I'm around the area. Their mochi is super fresh and traditional, not like the ice cream type but red bean inside so just keep that in mind before you go (I have to say this because some of my friends only like the ice cream mochi version). They're only open Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm, and it's better to come early because some items may have sold out if you're late. I've tried a few flavors but my favorites are green tea and butter mochi. Both are soft and chewy, which I really like. Every bite just feels comforting. The place itself is take-out only, small and simple, but the quality is amazing. I always leave happy.

    Monica V.

Nice little shop for mochi. I didn't realize that I should order ahead of time for the peanut butter one but the red bean ones I got were still very good. You order at a window which was a little confusing at first but someone came and help me right away once I stood in front of the windows. The mochi was so good and perfectly soft and chewy. I will have to order the peanut butter one next time.

The best mochi in town, by far! It's also usually a little warm when you buy it. Get there early if you want specials.

Ask the Community - Shuei-Do Manju Shop

How fast do they sell out on Friday?

Since I missed the NYE pre orders (12/16 pre orders closed). Does anyone know what time they open this Saturday 12/29 or Sunday 12/30?

You should follow their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/shueidomanju. They make their announcements there

Will the baked manju with the Lima bean filling ever become available? THAT is one of my favorites!

Hello - are you guys open on 12/30/21 and 12/31/21?

From the phone message of their answering machine they will be open 12/30 and 12/31. They will then be on vacation until 1/11.

    Can we preorder online?

Yes you can order online and skip the line!

Will the mandu keep a couple of days before we eat them?

The texture will not be as good (they will be less pillowy soft) but from a food safety perspective I think they are still okay after a couple of days at room temperature. They will harden if you put them in the fridge.

Are they gluten free? I can't eat wheat :(

Yes, most are gluten free! If you look at the menu displayed outside all of the gluten-free options are marked with "gf" -- basically all of the mochi-wrapped manju, yokan, chi chi dango, and butter mochi.

    Do they sell Mochi donut?

    No they don't.

    Do they accept credit card?

    Yes.

When do they serve shave ice?

They do not sell shave ice

    When does it open?

Not sure but they are open until 4pm on Fridays

    Are any of these vegan?

Yes- some are. Vegan and gluten free options are clearly listed on the menu.

Do these need to go into the fridge?

They should be kept in a cool dry place. They will get moldy if you don't eat them within a day or two.

It was the favorite dish for all four of us at the table. The crispy rice onigiri was also delicious but imo there wasn't enough filling. Service 10/10 We came in around 8pm and the waitress let us know that the kitchen is closing soon right when we were seated, we had enough time to order and they asked one more time before truly closing. We requested to move to the tatami after another party left and they were super nice about it!!! Ambiance: 7/10 It's a bit dark and slightly cramped, but i dont think it can be helped. Tatami experience 10/10!!One more thing - my friend said their prices haven't changed since she was little, she used to come w her family.

I'll admit it might have just been the specific dishes we ordered, but the food overall missed the mark. On a positive note, the service was incredibly fast and the staff was very nice! However, the food left a lot to be desired. We got the wagyu beef plate, and the meat was unfortunately chewy and heavily over-salted. We also ordered the seared salmon ikura bowl, which wasn't anything special and really lacked flavor. The bowl was quite dry, and I kept wishing it came with some sort of sauce to tie everything together. Even the shishito peppers were surprisingly bland. While I appreciate the great service, the food just didn't live up to the hype for me.

We discovered Gombei while in San Jose for a conference and wanted legit Japanese, not things near the hotel. And very glad we found this small restaurant. And it's as authentic as you'd expect. Family owned, the staff was friendly and helpful, and clearly popular with local people...everyone in there were regulars that knew the owners! Food was delicious and fresh, simple and very much like comfort food. I got their special, with grilled mackerel & salmon. Very tasty, though the salmon was more well done than I liked. My husband had the katsu curry which was delicious. The gyoza was also great and nicely pan fried. We loved the family atmosphere, and how comfortable it felt. Paid street parking is fairly easy to find, and there was thankfully not a long wait on weekend afternoons. I stopped by for a teriyaki chicken and tempura plate, which also came with salad, rice, miso soup, and potato croquettes. I started the meal with the miso soup, which was indeed fairly salty. The teriyaki chicken and rice though - ooh this slapped! The potato croquettes were also fluffy and delicious, although it was a tad difficult to eat since it was fairly large. (Half thickness sized portions would be preferred if possible.) The shrimp and imitation crab tempura were a good break form the chicken, and they were both tasty. For a full Japanese experience, the dining room here is indeed a little on the tighter side, which really fits the theme. Service was efficient, though note that there's a small surcharge with credit card. 8/10, would come again!
