The food court is currently closed for dine-in. FOOD: This is my favorite place to get katsu in the OC. For under $10, I can get katsu (your choice of pork or chicken), which also comes with a side of rice and warm curry as well as a crisp side salad. PRICES: It's rare to find a place that serves such hearty, authentic, Japanese dishes within the "under $10" price range in this area. KATSU WITH CURRY, RICE, AND SALAD (10/10): I switch off with pork and chicken each time I go. The meat is crispy and goes well with the savory curry. The side salad comes with a light vinaigrette and brings a refreshing element to this dish. I usually can't finish the whole dish by myself, so this lasts two meals for me. PARKING: Mitsuwa offers a medium-sized parking lot, and they also have underground parking. Parking is free and easy to find during COVID times. Prior to COVID, it was generally a nightmare trying to find parking, especially during lunchtime or over the weekends. THE WAIT: The wait for the food takes about 20-25 minutes. However, it's easy to wait since there's a grocery store to browse around while they're making your order. TAKEAWAY: This place makes me miss Japan each time I visit. Most of time they serve pretty good foods. But this time was not so good. We orderes the 4 bentos: mackerels and salmon & pork katsu. Mackerels and salmons were sooo dry. Salmons were hard to chew cause they were so warm dried. Pork katsu was also just warm and dried... My favorite was potato salad. I wanted give them 1 out of 5. I've been going here for over 10 years, starting from when I was in college. It was a great value then and it's still a great value now, even with the minor price increase. My usual go-tos are the chicken katsu curry with salad, the hamburg plate, and the katsudon. The hamburg plate is special to me, cause it's hard to find anywhere else. There are plenty of places that do katsu curry or katsudon, but very few with Hamburg plates. As for the curry, It isn't the best katsu curry I've had in my life, but it's a great deal at $8~ish dollars. Overall this cafeteria style place is my favorite place to get authentic Japanese food on a budget. I love the set tray style of food, it reminds me when I used to get lunch in Japan! Afterwards I like to walk over to the mitsuwa and walk around a bit and check what's on sale and maybe grab a drink or dessert. Really , I have visited this Mitsuwa probably 6-7 times the last 6 months , I saw the seafood , and never bought any, because the seafood quality , and to my surprise some people bought them. Go back to Miyabitei, the food I had orders , several of them , not worth eating. My favorite is the sansai soba. I love eating soba, as it is pretty healthy and not as filling as udon. And less that 8 bucks. Not cheap but price is reasonable. Sansai Soba is topped with mountain vegetables, enoki mushrooms, carrots, green onions, fish cake, and fried tempura flakes (if you like). Broth is nice, not too salty. We went off peak hours (3 PM) so didn't have to wait so long for our food. Payment is Cash Only so bring some of that old fashion currency. read more

Located inside the food court, this is a descent option if you are looking for a huge portions of food at a fair price. The curry and rice were delicious, but I was not a fan of the chewy, dark meat katsu. Food was ready quickly, even with a long line, your order is ready in minutes. Don't be sure to ask for plenty of their sauces and pickled ginger to add even more flavor to your meal. I usually get the chicken katsu curry with the side salad. The katsu comes out very crispy, which I like. The curry sauce is very good too, and goes well with the katsu. They also have pork katsu curry if you prefer that over chicken. This spot is pretty good if you have a craving for some katsu curry. I went with the advertised bento box lunch special. Lunch special ($8.50) - This came with grilled fillet of salmon, several pieces of BBQ chicken, rice, miso soup, and potato salad. The salmon was tender and grilled perfectly. Taste wise I really enjoyed the salmon. I was equally impressed with the BBQ chicken, which too was tender and tasted delicious. The rest of the accompaniments (rice, potato salad, and miso soup) didn't disappoint either. Overall everything tasted pretty good and I was full by the time I finished. At $8.50 the food here is very reasonably priced and tastes pretty good. A display case in front showcases curry dishes, rice bowls, and udon dishes available at Miyabi-Tei along with their extremely affordable prices. I can definitely see why this place is so popular during lunch. Just remember to bring cash! read more

This restaurant's curry is out of this world! I got the udon, curry, and salad set, and the order was ready within 10 minutes. The portions here are not to be underestimated; the amount of udon noodles in the bowl is deceptively small! The traditional sweet red pickles offered the perfect complement to the savory curry and rice, and the piping hot dashi broth that the chewy udon noodles were immersed in was very comforting. The acidic, yet garlicky and gingery dressing that coated the lettuce, diced tomatoes, and sliced cucumber in the salad cut through the rich curry very well. This is probably my favorite spot in the Mitsuwa food court. My go-to is the pork cutlet curry with a side salad - it's a very hearty meal at a really affordable price. I've been LOVING this place since I found it ~30 years as a kid. We don't eat out often as a family, BUT whenever I do, this little takeout restaurant is one of the TREASURES of O.C. A personal favorite is the Egg Tonkatsu combo. The owner sprinkles in a bit of leftover Tempura flakes into the ALREADY delicious, mouth savory miso soup. The sides and whole meal has that PERFECT umami flavor ALL throughout. The meals are SO well thought out that they don't need to tout "hand-crafted" this or that (B.S.). It ALREADY is. This place is straight up authentic Japanese home-cooking. You REALLY feel as though you are eating in a warm, cozy Japanese family's house (w/tatami matts and heated under table seating). For my experience this time, the katsu curry was not as flavorful as I remembered it to be. The rice itself could have been slightly hotter since it was a little bit on the colder side. I'm torn between a 3 and a 4 star rating. For a food court, the food is pretty good and worthy of 4 stars. However, overall, the food is only a 3 star rating. The service was pretty quick. I got there at 1pm and didn't think there would still be such a crowd. Still, I got my food pretty quickly after I ordered. I got the Miyabi Gozen which was a bento box with a bit of everything. What caught my eye was the saba (mackerel) which is one of my favs. However, this particular piece of saba was fried instead of grilled. I really enjoyed the nishime which I've not had since leaving Hawaii. The tempura was also pretty darn good for a food court. The coating was crunchy even though it was a little on the heavy side. There is also a bowl of miso soup (which was weak), slices of maguro which was okay, a bowl of white rice and some mochi balls with sweet red beans. Overall 3.5 stars. This is located in the Mitsuwa Marketplace food court and is cash only. It's a great place to grab a quick lunch or dinner at great values -- set meals start from $5.95. For $5.95 I got a chicken and egg rice bowl which came with pickled vegetables and miso soup. Most other entrees are in the $6 - 8 range. The chicken bowl came with nicely sautéed onion and an egg cooked Japanese style -- the egg is quickly stirred into the very hot meat and immediately taken off the heat. When cooked perfectly like today, the egg is soft and smooth and is almost like a soft-boiled egg. Everything is all good except there's too much soy sauce and the dish was too salty. You can also taste the sweetness of the flavor comes from msg. Chicken was dark meat and not breast meat. But for less than $6 you really cannot beat the value and the quality. It's filled with amazing carb-filled chicken katsu curry and glutinous rice. The curry was flavorful and the chicken was so tender. The outside skin was not soggy, but had a nice crisp to it. I'm glad I also got the salad on the side for an additional $1; I feel like if it was jus the rice and curry, I would've gotten tired of it pretty quickly. Even if you don't finish the whole place, they'll give you a box to take home your food. You know what the best part was? That whole plate was about ~$8... FOR REALS.
