For $5.95 I got a chicken and egg rice bowl which came with pickled vegetables and miso soup. Most other entrees are in the $6 - 8 range. The chicken bowl came with nicely sautéed onion and an egg cooked Japanese style -- the egg is quickly stirred into the very hot meat and immediately taken off the heat. When cooked perfectly like today, the egg is soft and smooth and is almost like a soft-boiled egg. Everything is all good except there's too much soy sauce and the dish was too salty. You can also taste the sweetness of the flavor comes from msg. Chicken was dark meat and not breast meat. But for less than $6 you really cannot beat the value and the quality. The Curry itself tasted delicious, but the pork for me was a bit too hard to chew. You can get the pork cutlet curry special, which is a piece of pork cutlet, with curry and salad. You can get bentos, which have a variety of items including miso soup and rice. You can get tempura, rice bowls, etc. etc. The food is actually pretty good for the price. It's like better tasting food court food, that doesn't taste like it's half-assed, and is good quality and well-portioned. Food 4/5: I've had better but I keep coming back because of the price and convenience of other restaurants available around this place. Ambiance 5/5: it's located in the food court of Mitsuwa. Nothing to complain about, there's always a few people walking around cleaning up. It gets crowded during lunch rushes so people panic to find a table but if you come earlier or later, you'll be fine. Dinner gets a little packed too even on week days. Weekends are pretty bad. So salty. I ordered a unagi egg bowl. The whole rice is drenched in soy sauce. Rice is the key of a good unagi bowl it shouldn't be wet and drenched in extremely salty sauce. It looks and taste alot like what you would find for much more at Curry house. The lady at the register is always very nice and probably has worked there forever since i've seen here there for almost everytime i go. A very solid chicken cutlet curry here in the mitsuwa market place. Today I worked at this grocery store handing out free samples from a tray while for the first time I wore a traditional Japanese robe, this one featuring a brand name and bright green and yellow fabric. It's been a peculiar week. A relationship that has almost started and then ended again and again took a heave towards closure, amidst brief tears in the late night for me and the late morning for her. I miss my best friend. The first thing I did was search for therapy, and I spent an exhaustive couple hours making phone calls. The next day I started one job, and on my lunch break I booked numerous therapy appointments and filled out paperwork. When I got home, I filled out more paperwork. The following day after that I found myself at this Mitsuwa wearing that robe. People walked by and I leapt out at them with my tray, my body language awkward as I tried to make my voice higher pitched and say, "Hey! How are you doing? Would you like to try our young grass barley drink today?" People would sometimes walk up nervously, taste it and notice its distinctly grainy texture and bitter flavor, smile awkwardly and sip down the rest slowly, or they would sometimes just ignore me, barely mumbling or just smirking in disbelief at my green salesmanship. A number of nice folks enjoyed it, felt gratified by the assured "taste of health", and went on their day shopping with as I referred it to them, a "fun little boost of your daily greens". I enjoyed watching elderly people and kids receive even a portion of the nutrition so many Americans are lacking. When a pregnant woman would walk in my colleague would rush to her offering her and the child to be sustenance. To young and tired looking parents with their children sleeping on their shoulders, I would offer a full cup of the nutritious drink in hopes that it would balance out the likely drip coffee and donut they might've had that morning and nothing else into the afternoon as they cleaned their offspring's excrement, visited grandparents, went to hockey practice, or prepared themselves for night school while their spouse taught the children to articulate sign language and read Braille at the same time. These young parents with bags under their eyes and 5 o'clock shadow graciously accepted my offering, and I knew they knew that "I got it." The most notable change in the atmosphere was part way through my shift when a curious older Italian-American woman came up to me and started telling me copious amounts about her health life. She had found out her white blood cells were too low a couple years ago, and was told she needed to eat more greens. At the time she'd drank wine every day, a description that sounded at least like some form of alcoholism, and lots and lots of pasta and bread. She stopped drinking, and stopped eating pasta and bread, and her health began to improve. Her white blood cells went up. I encouraged her and congratulated her, making her feel seen and not condescended to. Her voice was shrill and vaguely accented by an east coast lilt. She went on to tell me that she lived in Newport Beach, but came out to Costa Mesa because it was different there. Commenting on the consumerist culture of fashion island, she described a social strata of older, wealthy women, one of which she called "the queen bee", who used strange social dynamics to maintain power amidst the friend group. One day she commented to the ladies altogether that the newcomer "drove a Mercedes", at which point the newcomer felt it strange, shallow, reductive and only reflecting importance of material and nothing else. I said something like, "that's tragic, it's a very capitalistic culture", and she smiled and mumbled something in agreement. I was keen on selling her this green drink, but I had a feeling she just wanted to talk to someone. My colleague began to look at us funny, almost wanting me to shoo her away but I was too compassionate, and she reminded me of a friend I have in Wisconsin who I talk with on the phone. Rough around the edges, road-worn, personable and eager to have conversation, these are also things I often see in myself. Maybe what we think we are, we relate to and want to connect. read more

The simmered fried chicken includes a bowl of soup, veggie salad with a unique dressing, white rice, spicy dicons, and potato salad. Delicious and delightful are the proper adjectives to describe these Nipponese offerings. Curry, noodles, and a variety of meats are also available. So if you like diversity in food, they certainly offer it. This restaurant is one of my roads to an appetizing venue. They're super generous in their portions, and this dish can easily be split between two people or into two meals. The curry isn't overly spicy, and the katsu is perfectly fried.
