We have been here several times. Once we went for hibachi which is a fun, engaging time and had pretty decent food. We usually sit at the bar and order a few rolls which are typically pretty good. Sushi snobs won't be impressed, but for the island, I think it's one of the best. The only thing I've had that I really didn't like was the mussels since they taste like fish sauce, but my boyfriend liked them a lot so that's obviously an issue of preference. There is a review about rude service - I totally disagree. There is a cultural difference, but once you start chatting, they are all so helpful and engaging. There is a language barrier for some, but we have always had great conversations. The only complaint which could also be cultural is they can be slow. It's not the end of the world, my boyfriend just gets up and asks for another beer and it's brought over right away. read more

Manage your expectations as this is not a "Little Tokyo" restaurant, but it is also one of the better Japanese restaurants in the vicinity of Newport. They give you salad and miso soup for most dishes ... and their food is consistent for a Japanese restaurant. The prices are comparable to other Japanese restaurants and again, they'll give both salad and miso soup (unlike most of the other area Japanese restaurants). If you're looking for a deal, then do what some of the other reviewers mentioned and go there during Happy Hour for the rolls. You can't go wrong with ordering a sushi boat too, but if you're trying to get your best value (dollar for sushi pieces), then you'll probably actually get more individual pieces by ordering individual rolls. They do have a bar (with a wide selection) and you'll find folks going there for that or alternatively going here for the hibachi grill. I'm personally not a fan of hibachi, but it is popular here. The ventilation is good too so if you're just sitting in the dining room for sushi, then your clothes won't end up smelling like cooked meat by eating here. Service-wise, its adequate and I haven't had any bad experiences in the past year and a half, but I'm not surprised by comments from some other reviewers. Ambiance and decor-wise, its fine. I'm not sure, but it seems like the restaurant may have different origins (i.e., bar and dance floor). The current setting is fine and clean. Overall, this restaurant is a better choice than any of the Newport Japanese restaurants with the ability to park and get some more "bang for the buck" in terms of food/drinks. read more

I really enjoy the food here. I've been a few times for the sushi "Happy Hour" and it was really good. Great deal too! I've also been for hibachi dinner and thought that was good as well. I would definitely stick to chicken and/or shrimp (I don't eat beef), but the scallops and lobster in the combo hibachi meal tasted like it had been frozen. I don't mind frozen seafood, but it shouldn't taste like it. Overall, very good food! read more

Alcohol when I was there........And it was awesome. One of my friend order the grill meat dish and wow it was a show, like literally, the guy who made it was enjoying his time with us because he made stupid joke and showing off his knife skill. The sushi is not the greatest....but it been a while..... disclaimer: I've meal in this place 3 times, 1 with alcohol and sushi, 1 with grill meat and 1 with just sushi......The experience was nice for someone that have his first liberty during OCS....So it is totally bias. We came on a Monday evening it's was pretty average. Maybe about 30 people. Service was a bit slow I think there was maybe 1 person per job (1 server 1 hostess 1 bartender etc.) they were really slow in service yet I felt a bit rushed. Mizu is okay. Nothing special, just okay. With that said, I'm willing to concede that two years living in Japan spoiled me with regards to sushi - by American standards Mizu (which means water in Japanese, a strange name for a restaurant now that I think about it isn't too bad. My kids like going to Mizu for the hibachi ... which includes two fire displays which is the kids' main interest. The hibachi food is okay, the vegetable dinner is actually really good and includes a lot of food, but the prices at dinner are a bit much. Its worth going at lunch, maybe not at dinner. Average Japanese Restaurant. The lunch special is a great deal but my friends and I came in as the ONLY table and it still took us forever to get our food. The wait staff was kind and respectfully but rarely checked in on us (my water and soda were empty on multiple occasions). The hibachi was a bit bland but by no means inedible. I would say the sushi is where Mizu shines. The rolls were full and delicious. Had it not been for the sushi, this place would fall below average for me. If you are craving a place for good sushi and don't mind waiting around for your meal as you chat with friends, than Mizu is not a bad option to choose from. read more

The food wasn't bad in fact it wasn't the food which was the problem. The problem was the snotty racist service that we received. The chief was the only cool person there the whole management staff was racist. One of the servers tried to steal my credit card. They added a gratuity even though we told them we tip 25%. At the end when we were checking out they tried taking my credit card they flipped out on us because we weren't going to tip for the poor service. They racially profiled us as Mexican when we clearly aren't Service was terrible, staff was racist, and at the end when we tipped the chef they thought we were going to tip them all. I used to love Mizu and my husband and I would make this our first dinner every time we vacation in Newport but sadly we won't be returning. Mizu still has fast service and good sushi but they now have an obnoxious siren with really loud music that sounds whenever someone has a birthday. We were only there for a half hour and it went off twice and each time lasted for three to four minutes. I couldn't hear a thing my husband said to me while it was playing. When I go out for dinner, this is the last thing I want to hear. Mizu used to be such a quiet place to have a meal but now it feels like a Chuckee Cheese. Best sushi and best prices in the area. I have gone there about once a week for the last year. I am fairly picky when it comes to sushi, and have on more occasions than not been disappointed with sushi bars/restaurants. Mizu has a very nice staff and the sushi is excellent. When I first moved to RI, this building housed a different Japanese restaurant and was operated under a different name and different management. Loving Japanese food, I gave it a shot and had high hopes, but was severely disappointed with the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the restaurant. After about a year, I noticed that the name had changed on the exterior to Mizu and decided to give it another shot, and I am so glad I did. The entire restaurant had been remodeled and updated, Mizu is operated by new management and a new staff from the previous establishment. The food is excellent and the staff is friendly. Sadly, my favorite sushi chef there recently moved away (he was very friendly, always engaged in fun conversation, and had a great sense of humor), but the other chefs are very good and very friendly. I plan to go back as long as this place is around. Before I forget! They do Happy Hour just about every day between 3:30 and 5:30 and a number of sushi rolls are $3! Prepare yourself for a somewhat long-winded post with a few points that don't directly reflect on the restaurant. (TL:DR at bottom) We came to Mizu because she was craving sushi and we felt like trying a new place. When we walked in the door there was a female customer standing in front of the hostess station. We, mistakenly, assumed that she was waiting to be helped and put our patient pants on to wait. Five to ten minutes later, with us standing right behind her the whole time, another group comes in, looking like deer in the headlights to find a line, and the woman says, "Oh, I am just waiting for a table. I've already been helped." .....People can be so strange (and I should have known better than to assume). After the gatekeeper moved, the hostess was quite prompt and we were seated quickly. The hibachi portion was busy, there were two larger groups waiting for a spot at the grill by this time, but the regular tables were not too bad. Service was appropriately timed and never felt lacking. Since sushi was the major motivator, we decided to go big or go home, and since we already waited for this meal, going home wasn't an option. Naturally we got an almost certainly not sea worthy boat full of rolled up, fishy goodness. The serving size was more than ample for the two of us and the quality was on par with what we expect from sushi in the Newport RI area. I agree with other reviewers who noted that the spicy tuna roll is not what I would call "classic". We finished off the meal with tempura green tea ice cream which capped the meal off with a healthy dose of yum! I've been a guest of mizu restaurant for some years and have slowed and stopped my visits due to bad reviews and experiences of others. Luckily, however, I did not let that influence me today. I was supposed to be here for lunch with other people, and I ended up here alone. Had the three roll lunch sushi special that included a super hot, very tasty Miso soup as well as a very fresh side salad perfectly dressed with a very yummy dressing. Scorpion bowl for one was also delicious! The presentation was absolutely beautiful. Yellowtail roll, eel and cucumber roll, and sweet potato roll so fresh and delicious. I even ordered a side of fried rice from the kitchen. Hot and flavorful, I had to dig in immediately. Highly recommend absolutely anything on the menu. Also, LOVE the Naruto roll. This hands down was the worst "Japanese" food I ever had. For starters. the workers are all Chinese. If anyone knows anything about Asian culture, you know that there is quantum leap from Chinese to Japanese cuisine. I've lived in Japan for three years and was spoiled with such a high quality of cuisine. This food was terrible. The sushi tasted God-awful and I ordered Fried Rice which is a Chinese dish, even that came out disgusting I took one bite and stopped eating. I got a couple alright appetizers which where two variations of dumplings. They were ok, but I would never go back to this place again. I just left this place. Very disappointed. I am visiting and wanted to get a couple rolls. Firstly the sushi is average not great not bad. My reason for the 1 star is the quality control and the customer service. I order two rolls and ate the first roll (it was ok). Next while eating the second roll I felt something not quite right and chewy I pulled from my mouth a small price of plastic/paper and then a slightly larger price. Seems as though this got mixed in with the spicy tuna. Pretty gross and had my stomach a lil upset. I actually didn't freak out about this and I waited until the server came and politely informed her. She talked to the chief and they apologized and asked me if I wanted anything else. I declined, as I was pretty grossed out by this time. Next they handed me the bill which charged me for the roll and tried to explain to me that this was the plastic wrap that they used to form the sushi. I inform them that the plastic was a thick white plastic/paper and that it was inside the roll. I really wasn't in the mood for arguing so I paid for the other roll and I was on my way. If a restaurant serves you food with foreign unrecognizable items in it.... they should tell the customer "I'm sorry, we deeply apologize and the tab is on the house". As we were putting on our coats getting ready to leave, the waitress actually said to us when she looked at the tip, "that's it?" My mother and I were so shocked. I didn't even know what to say. As a former waitress, I would never open the bill until after the customers left not right in front of them. Shockingly rude. We liked the hibachi food though...but after how the waitress treated us at the end, after marginal service anyway...we won't be going back. Too bad because our kids enjoyed it too. It is pricey however, so definitely look for a coupon. After the waitress asked us, "that's it?" she did tell us that the waitress and hibachi chef split the tip...which is good to know and perhaps they should advise you this at the beginning of the dinner...however unfair since the cook was great and waitress was not very good and unfriendly to top it off. read more

We had a good meal here. We had only been to one other hibachi restaurant before, so we don't know what to compare it to. But we went back the next day. The lunch hibachi is reasonably priced. Overall Dining Experience=AWFUL. Waited over 35 minutes at our table (with two very hungry & tired children) to be acknowledged, have our order taken, and be brought ANYTHING to eat or drink. For a sushi place in Newport I would say this is the best and with that being said please note this is not San Fran or Japan... so the sushi is decent, but not the best in the world. We've been several times and always have had a good experience. Fresh fish and good service. A few times we went with our 18 month old who tends to make quite the mess and the servers were very understanding and wouldn't even let us pick up the floor (which we always do because it's not right no leave such a mess). We will always go back when sushi is wanted. read more
