We went there for my boyfriend's birthday & I requested a birthday dessert as a surprise for him for after dinner. Staff said they had mini macaroons, but later came back with a mini sushi cake with candles on top! We were able to share it across the table & it was delicious. They made his birthday so memorable for this moment alone. As for the food, the rice-to-sushi ratio was perfect. The fish melted like butter & they were all so fresh. I run Danielle's Sushi Diary on social media where I review local sushi restaurants and give my honest opinions. I visited Mori Sushi last week, and was shocked I had not heard of them sooner. We ordered several rolls: the Volcano Roll, the Mori Roll, the Crunch Roll, the Dynamite Roll, the Hawaii Roll, and the Godzilla roll. I loved each and every roll, but the stand out's were the Godzilla roll and the Volcano roll. Both very unique and must-gets. All of the fish we had was so fresh and I was super impressed. The prices are on the higher side, but reasonable for what you are getting. The actual restaurant is in a small plaza next to a grocery store. We tried Mori Sushi for takeout after a day at the beach. The order was ready remarkably fast. The parking lot is paid but first 15 mins are free and up to 2 hours can be validated at almost any shop in the plaza. For apps we got edamame which was amazing but a really small serving, maybe 1/2 the size of other places. We also got spring rolls which came as 3 rolls. those were pretty good. I ordered 2 spicy tuna rolls and 1 spicy salmon roll. They came as ordered, however there was nothing spicy about it and the spicy mayo seemed to be mixed into the fish instead of on top of the roll as is more typical. Regardless, they were not spicy at all. The rice (or something in the rolls) tasted very sweet which I was not expecting. The sushi was not terrible but not great either. For sushi my girlfriend got a shrimp tempura roll and a California roll. She said they were good / okay, not bad but not amazing. The sushi portion sizes seem small. The maki rolls are around the diameter of a quarter with 6 small pieces, and run $8-11 depending on what you order. The special rolls can be over $20 a piece. The sushi overall seemed very fresh, but lackluster in other areas. We will likely try Mori again but maybe after trying other local shops. read more

Both rolls were full of flavor and the perfect about of spice (as long as you enjoy spicy food) if you think mayo is spicy, neither are for you. Service/ambience: I walked in at 5pm and was immediately greeted and provided with a menu, as well as validated my parking ticket. The restaurant had a very dim lit yet relaxing ambience which was absolutely relaxing and welcoming. The waiters were very polite and attentive. The ginger dressing was fantastic. But the time it took to get someone to take our orders, get our food, and get/pay for our checks was almost comical. One person in our group asked for a salad that never came, but we were charged for. We couldn't find our server when we needed to dispute that charge so we had to flag down someone who wasn't serving our table. We had to ask multiple times for utensils and water refills. There were not many people in the restaurant so we are not sure what the issue was. It almost felt like we were being deliberately mistreated and ignored. I was less excited about the Bibimbop Korean dish. It was solid but nothing special. Warning: I requested the chili pepper paste and spread it over the meal. That was a bad move, as I ended up scraping some off due to the less-than-appealing flavor (not bad but not great). A better idea is to apply it in small portions to see if you enjoy it first. In Newport for the weekend, and got a hankering for sushi. Knowing that Newport is not the cheapest place, decided to try this place out. The food came out well. The spicy mayo had a little spice but not a bunch. The rice was seasoned properly. The tamago was not warmed but was fresh and sweet. The special rolls are good but they were not special. Most of them are standard rolls with a couple items added on The fried scallops were coated heavily and were not cooked evenly. The small scallops were overcooked, and the bigger ones were slightly under. The beef skewers were cooked to well done, but the sauce helped keep everything moist. First time trying uni, and it's an interesting flavor and texture. The best way to describe it is a pudding like whole belly clam. It's briny, cold, slightly musky, and very much oceanic. Also very pricy, those pieces were more than the special rolls. The red bean ice cream was a nice sweet treat. Slightly sweet and pasty which pairs well with the milky sweet ice cream. It's good sushi, but there was some missteps. read more

Unfortunately our experience at Mori was not good at all. Ordered the agadashi tofu, seaweed salad and 2 rolls. The tofu was undwhelming to say the least. It tasted like it was frozen breaded and then dropped in the fryer with a little sauce dumped on top. At least that came out quickly. The 2 rolls and seaweed salad still had not shown up after 45 minutes. Our waiter had disappeared and stopped checking on us. Finally got his attention and asked why things were taking so long. We watched to go order after to go order going by and nothing for us. Waiter checked at the sushi counter and came back with our seaweed salad. It was fine but nothing special. Another 10 or 15 minutes and we finally saw what looked like our 2 rools set up on the sushi counter for pick up. It sat that for 5 minutes but our waiter never checked on it. We stopped another server and asked if she could check to see if that was ours. it was so she brought it over. Took over 50 minutes to get 2 rolls and they were not very good to say the least. The restaurant was prioritizing to go orders over people sitting in their restaurant. The server did nothing to check on us the entire time. I'm sure others have had a much better experience than we did because we went there due to the ratings online. We just found the experience and food to be poor. read more

The service very attentive. We try to dine here at least once a week - sometimes 3 times a week. We even do takeout for various boat parties. We typically order sashimi (Tuna, Scallop with mayo), sushi (tuna crunch, spicy scallop, & Jenny rolls), apps (shrimp sumai, pork dumplings, avocado salad with amazing ginger dressing) Korean entrees (beef or pork Bulgogi). I have been here a few times and the food has always been great. The reason why I give 4 stars is due to service. More times than not, we have to wait a while after being seated to place our order. Food is usually pretty prompt. But then, we have to wait a while after eating to be able to pay the bill. The servers are very nice, but seem overwhelmed even when there aren't that many patrons at the moment. Maybe they have a bunch to do behind the scenes? Also, they seemed pretty hesitant to validate my parking pass. Twice. I had to go to another store in shopping center and buy something to have it validated, when I spent more than an hour in Mori. Not sure if the restaurant has to pay for the validations? Now to the food. Their food is always consistently good. The most recent time, we got the shrimp and tempura appetizer. Try WHITE HORSE TAVERN or PASTA BEACH ITALIAN or CORNER CAFE (There's a REASON there's a line outside waiting in February) - The Mooring is not perfect but probably the best you are going to do at the waterfront.
