I come here once every other week, I always order the same thing. Sushi remains good, hibachi portions are getting smaller though. For starters we chose the "Eggplant Sandwich" which also included spicy tuna, lobster salad, and salmon with wasabi sauce. Also ordered the "Thai Spring Roll". Both selections worked fine and was followed with the spicy "Crazy Tuna Roll" and "Thai Spicy Roll" - both winners. Service was polite and attentive during our visit - no issues. We are from out of town (here for 5 weeks for military purposes). We chose to eat here twice. The first time wasn't so bad. We were sat quickly at a booth (not sure why they don't ask if you want to sit at the tables where they cook in front of you?). It took about 45 minutes for our food to get to our table. Kind of ridiculous but we waited. Decided to give it a second chance. Was kind of hoping to be seated in the back this time to watch them cook. Nope. Was immediately sat at a booth. We both ordered. Our food came out quickly but mine was wrong. I didn't complain but the waitress recognized it wasn't what I ordered (props to her for caring & noticing). However when she apologized and took it back, another lady came back with our waitress to our table with the same plate yelling in Japanese back & forth to our waitress. Not sure doing this at our table was an appropriate place for this? Should have been done in the kitchen. We felt very awkward: mainly because we don't speak Japanese and we felt bad for the waitress getting fussed at. Food is decent. Service isn't terrible. I went to dine with a friend and decided to go to mizu's because we hadn't been in a while. The atmosphere is nice, but the food was both disappointing and lackluster. We had a boat for two emphasizing 18 pieces of sashimi, mixed sushi, and a couple rolls. The rolls were delicious, but the sushi and sashimi were entirely limp. Some of the fish on the sushi had an almost slimy, reflective appearance and a faint odor. Some of the sashimi slices were equally "reflective" but also had disappointingly smaller cuts than expected and a very fishy smell. Lastly, the hot sake I had was luke warm/cold within 4-5min of receipt. I've been dealing with a bubbly gut and rotten-egg farts for the last three hours. My friend had the same response and just had to spend 30min in the bathroom... I cannot recommend Mizus for their sushi and sashimi. Do yourself a favor and go someplace like New Sea Shai. EDIT: It is a HAPPY HOUR special ($3 rolls, $1.25 sushi a la carte), not a lunch special... and so the cheap prices don't happen until 3 (or 3:30 - 5). Came back here thinking I was getting the deal and alas, at noon, dropped $30 on a couple rolls and yellowtail sashimi. Cest la fuckin vie! Got a fried banana and spicy (but not at all spicy) tuna roll and it was delicious. Crunchy tobiko in there too. Had an Alaskan hand roll (salmon/avo/ and cucumber which promptly got ripped out because I loathe cucumbers). The yellowtail sashimi was good but the cut was a bit off: way way too thick, and had been previously frozen. I have to reserve the 5 stars for those places that make the melt in your mouth sashimi slices... Still, service is great, prices are average when not getting the HH steal. read more

What a find! Went here for Happy Hour (1130-5pm? Happy Hour turned into Happy Freaking WHOLE DAY) after class and I'm going to make it a weekly ritual. $3 rolls on so many different combinations. Tempura rolls are about $9-$11 at Sushi-go down in Newport, for $6 I could get 12 pieces of shrimp tempura rolls. Also, $5.50 margaritas that were strong and delicious for 430 in the afternoon. Plenty of different choices off their cocktail menu. I definitely want to go back and try their hibachi lunch specials which are also offered at amazing prices! 5 stars for some of the fresh and innovative seafood rolls, but 2 -3 stars for the margaritas. Great drink prices, but not great drinks. I usually have cooked rolls, but I must say, I might be a convert to the "Happy Roll" and the "Lover's Roll".......amazing. The Happy Roll had Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, etc. - topped with delicious and generous amounts of black caviar. The Lover's Roll had the most gorgeous iridescent red caviar I have ever seen. (See photo) If you are a big fan of Sushi, I can't imagine that you would be disappointed. The fried shell crab was not great, so I suggest that you stick with the rolls. Prices are very fair. Aquidneck Island doesn't really have a "great" sushi place, which is very sad. I've experienced great sushi in big cities, but in RI, I'm just left disappointed. Not a good enough reason for me to leave though. That being said, Mizu is the best you're going to get. My friends and I have done the Hibachi thing here, and THAT was entertaining. I'm very shy, so the chef had a lot of fun with me, chucking vegetables at me, and shooting Saki in my mouth, as I was completely mortified, til my friend and I had a little more of our scorpion bowl. And then I just rolled with it and had fun. Some chefs are more entertaining than others, so it's kind of hit or miss.You can see kids really get a kick out of the theatrics, so I've been meaning to bring my little cousin. The sushi rolls are well executed, and the waitresses generally do a good job. I've had some "issues" when it comes to splitting the check with multiple credit cards. But as is the case anywhere you go in that situation, WE'RE the jerks who didn't think to bring cash. They have a special in the afternoon, from 3:30-5:30, where the rolls are half off I believe. So I would take advantage of that, if you're looking to save some money. I keep coming back, so they must be doing something right... read more

I came here with my sister and ordered a mere tuna roll and a vegetable lo mein-type of dish. Fresh tuna is supposed to be firm and toothsome and the flesh should be a bright red color. The sushi I got was very mushy and off-color. It felt like I was eating a fish-flavored gummi bear. The vegetable noodle dish I ordered was even worse. The noodles were very gooey. It seemed like the noodles had been sitting in luke-warm water all day and they decided to serve me that. There were hardly any vegetables in the dish. It was over-seasoned with soy sauce and it just tasted like salty over-cooked pasta. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. Even the tea was bad. The gyoza (dumplings) we ordered tasted and looked like they had been frozen. They were not fresh at all. Please do not go here. This establishment only cares about making a buck, not about food quality. read more

Went for lunch, place was close to empty. Sat at empty bar, ordered an app and a lunch special. Both were good. The service was quick I was in and out in 20 minutes. This is a great alternative to something like Panera, and it's a local business! So I would recommend this on quick, convenience alone. I did think it was a little expensive for lunch, but not for a lunch near Newport. I did appreciate that a lunch combo came with both soup and salad. read more

Mizu replaced Sakura Steakhouse here in Middletown and the difference is night and day. Mizu has great lunch specials if you're trying to save money and some excellent chef specialty rolls if you're looking to indulge in excellent sushi. I am allergic to sesame and every time I've come they've made sure that nothing I have has any sesame in it. They're attention to detail is great, the customer service is great and the sushi is easily the best on the island. They have a sushi area, hibachi area and a full service bar. This is a great place for families to enjoy lunch or dinner, or even just yourself when you get that sushi craving we all get. read more

Full of personality and talent Sake table side Cons: service was slow and a bit uninterested Lobster tail! It was bad, tasted like chemicals!!! This place is amazing! I came here with friends tonight and I was pleasantly surprised at how great the food was and how much fun it was! The atmosphere is fun and warm. There is japanese art everywhere and the place is set up real nice! There are two parts to the restaurant: The sushi and the Hibachi. We chose the Hibachi. It was so much fun to see our food cooked in front of us! The man who made our food was hilarious! He was so personal and friendly and we got a show with our meal. I felt really rushed when eating there. The waiter made us grab what was left of our appetizer so they could clear the table. So we had to eat pieces of Calamari and Gyoza without the sauce. I've been living in Newport for the past two years. This has become my favorite sushi spot. The happy hour deals are so great! (3:30-5:30 everyday) I believe it's $3 per roll. I went for lunch and got the lunch special. It comes with 2 rolls of your choice, soup, and salad for $8. You can add another roll for $11. Every time my family comes to visit me they look forward to eating at mizu. My favorite raw roll is the spicy scallop. It's always very tasty. For the specialty rolls I enjoy the B52 and the Thai spicy roll. This review would be 5 stars except for the service isn't very great. read more

I've been to Mizu a dozen or so times over the past few years and the reason for the 3 star review is simple; inconsistency. I've never had a BAD meal there but sometimes the food is great, other times only ok. The thing that is the least consistent is the service. A lot of the waitresses are short, don't bother asking people if they want refills on drinks and are just over all inattentive. We have had a couple good servers but that is the exception to the norm. The ambience also leaves something to be desired. I find the giant Budweiser blimp hanging in the dining room and Christmas decorations year round a bit tacky. If the food and service were amazing, those details could be ignored, but their not. Overall if your in the area and are looking for a casual Japanese dinner it's not a bad option, just don't expect too much. read more

Well, I have eaten here several times before, but not tonight and not by my choice. A place I thoroughly have enjoyed numerous times on my own turned me away simply because I was by myself. For one, that is discrimination against every person who goes anywhere on their own. It's not like I need a reminder that I am single but thank you for that. I get to the restaurant and they are slow as is and I am by myself. When I asked to sit at the hibachi table she turned me away and said there must be a two person minimum to sit there. Well I found this very interesting because I have sat there before, as a single person at least 3-4 other times in the past. I then mentioned that I have eaten here several times before she walked away and came back and simply said no. She then had the audacity to try and seat me at a table. Absolutely not. I will not be eating there again, ever. That is the most ridiculous policy ever and one that has never been said to me before. The kicker is, it is my birthday and I chose to want to spend it there, by myself. Now I will not be spending anytime there ever. Disappointing for sure but looks like my business will be going to the Newport Tokyo House. Fore warning, if you are on your own, don't even attempt to get hibachi here. They will simply say no. Or maybe they won't considering I have before. Really a shame that a regular customer will never be coming again because of a very rude employee who chose to discriminate against me as a single person. read more

This review will have pluses and minuses. I'll start with the minuses while I have your attention. Minuses: The restrooms were quite possibly the worst I've been in. Obviously I've been in some gross gas station banos, but with what my expectation is for an expensive restaurant, I was extremely disappointed. First, my wife took our 3 yo daughter to the ladies room. It was covered in vomit. I then took our daughter to the men's room and it looked it hadn't been touched since the night before. Standard would dictate you clean the restroom before dinner service and we were among the first customers of the evening. It hadn't been cleaned. The floor had paper towels all over it, the toilet stall had remains from other users all over the seat, and the toilet seat was broken and only had one screw in it. All in all, unacceptable. Pluses: The food was good, expensive, but good. Good portions. Bottom line: I would go again, but I would check the restroom before I sit down. If it was nasty I would tell the manager that's why I'm leaving. read more

We went to Mizu for my birthday. Made reservations, thank goodness, because it was very busy at the grill. The food was great...waitress service, not so much. Everyone got their drinks but me. I had to wait 20 minutes for mine, well after the soup and salad were served and the chef had started cooking our meal. We received our appetizers in the middle of our meal...she actually forgot to bring one and only brought it to me after I got the bill...after dessert...which was all wrong. I would have preferred to have the sushi taken off my bill, but I honestly don't know if the waitress would know how to do it. I would love to give more stars because it's a fun place and the food is good, but the service was just not good. read more

Busy Saturday night, I get it, but I don't care when I have a concert at 9. Compensation: a round of shots for all. So off we went... Had a sushi roll and a spicy tuna hand roll. First was great, second was like eating something fresh from the freezer. Can't fool food quality in proportion, especially Asian. The entertainment, however, is worth the price of admission. Chef played the crowd well and liberally doled out sake to all of us. "More sake, more happy!" he exclaimed! Oh boy...time to go....and so we did. For those in Newport, the Diner's card is far out. Mizo honors the 2-for-1 dinners and according to the book qualifies everything (except lobster dishes). However, you better exclude sushi too.
