David wanted sushi for his birthday so we all headed to Koi in downtown Westerly. We will add it to our list of great restaurants in the downtown area! We started with the pan fried dumplings which were very good and Don had the hibachi which he said was delicious - even without the fan fare at the hibachi table (there isn't one). I had a lunch bento box with chicken teriyaki and sushi that came with a salad. I'm glas I don't have to choose between sushi and something else!! There was also the sushi and sashimi lunch which was enormous and delicious and a sampler of sushi rolls. Food was ok. Service was weird to bad. Not sure if it was the owner or what but felt like we were not supposed to be there. We just went by Tay's mansion and wanted sushi- not sure where our crime was. But the lady was so obviously bothered by us and was like pulling teeth to get anything from her (in terms of food, drink whatever). And food was really not that good on top of it all. I was extremely happy to see that Westerly did have a sushi place. However, I will be very honest. We ordered three rolls per person for four people, and we threw more than half of it away because it was just not delicious. Now I'm not gonna say it was bad or anything was wrong with it per se but the rice did not taste high-quality and the fish was mediocre and whatever flavorings they use maybe the type of seaweed that they use was just barely OK. Granted, we are used to eating amazing sushi everything from New York City to Michelin rated restaurants in Europe so we have been around the block, but we are also people who travel in normal USA suburbs and towns and have had local Sushi that has been great . This was below par. Nothing wrong with the service. Nothing wrong with the presentation. Nothing wrong with the price. Just the overall quality is not something that I would be able to order again. read more

Koi has some of the best sushi I've had in Rhode Island. Very fresh, very diverse menu, very quick service. Good selection of imported and domestic beers. The ambiance leaves something to be desired but the booths are comfortable and the bar is lively. Highly recommend this spot for a quick, filling dinner. Pretty good Japanese restaurant on Westerly's High St. It was a quiet day for lunch, just a few locals popping in for a bite and a drink, and so we had a restful and restorative meal. Service was prompt and polite. The sushi and sashimi were very good, nicely presented, and fresh. My wife's salmon teriyaki was well prepared and the accompanying fried rice was outstanding. My tempura nabi was tasty and hot, with thick slippery udon noodles, a clean-tasting broth, and a pair of crisp tempura ebi. A satisfying meal! read more

Come on Yelpers, 4.5 stars for Koi? It's hardly an impressive venue, that is until you start eating the food, which in my opinion merited 5 stars on both occasions. We opted for takeout, and candidly thought the food here was great! My co-diner said Koi's shumai was the best she's ever had and ordered it twice. We also tried the gyoza, fried rice, and sake don (salmon), miso soup and house salad. The sake don was excellent, a substantial portion of salmon sashimi, served over tasty rice, accompanied by nicely prepared miso soup, and a small house salad. The house salad was mainly lettuce, but the dressing was nicely done. Our orders were ready on time, nicely packaged and ready to go. We ate our dinners in the beautiful Wilcox Park, which is essentially behind the restaurant, and offers fountains, a large fishpond, perennial gardens, lovely paths, and mature trees. It's a gem of a little park which is adjacent to the library. If we lived in the area, Koi would be our go to place for sure! read more

I've never had a bad experience at koi, both dine and for take out. They have a wide variety of sushi choice and the flavor and freshness can't be beat in this area. In the mood to try a different spot in Westerly we ended up at Koi. It was later in the evening and we had no problem getting a table right away. The service was fast and friendly. We wanted to try out their sushi, so we ordered a shrimp tempura roll to start. It was very good, although a little smaller than other places. For dinner we both tried the shrimp and chicken hibachi. It came with the usual soup and salad. Everything was very good, with plenty left to take home. Saw this restaurant as we were walking down the street and decided to give it a try. We had a very interesting roll that had banana and tuna. I greatly enjoyed it. We also had the basic California roll. The hibachi chicken was more like a fajita. It was served on a bed of onions which I found strange. We sat at the bar and had excellent service. read more

This place was delicious. Looks small on the outside but it's pretty spacious. Right in the heart of downtown Westerly, we stumbled into this restaurant late at night while exploring the town. We were seated quickly and the staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered the steak hibachi with noodles and my fiancé got his usual sushi + a special roll. We both absolutely LOVED our food! Coco and her team run a great bar and restaurant, reminiscent of my days living in NYC (almost actually living IN the restaurant that my parents owned). They're friendly and create a fun vibe. Coco always has a drink with us and we always have a good time. We love their maki rolls and they're new pokèbowls are pretty good. Sometimes they have maki deals. Be sure to friend them on Facebook for updates! One of my favorite dishes here is the nabe yaki soup. Comes with chicken, seafood, thick soba noodles and veggies. The broth is delicious and it comes with 2 tempura shrimp. I also love the chicken katsu. The lunch portion is better than the dinner portion in my opinion. The lunch comes with 1 chicken portion with rice, a California roll and some other stuff in a bento box. The dinner portion has double the meat and only comes with rice. Their private dining room is just about done with construction (we got to dine in it last week!). It could probably seat 20 or so people. Maybe more if they took the spare buffet table out. I haven't had sushi in 5-ever, which is millennial speak for "in about three months since the last amazing Yelp Hudson Valley Elite Event when we went to Isamu in Beacon, NY and had delish maki!" Tonight, I was performing in an interactive murder mystery show for a fundraiser event in Westerly, and all that acting worked up a serious appetite. My hunger pangs plus my sushi-deprived self led me to Koi, a wonderful local Japanese restaurant that focuses on sushi, yes, but also a menu with a variety of other favorites, like yakisoba noodles, gyoza dumplings, and creamy avocado salad. Yummy! I stuck with sushi, of course, and was delighted with the Naruto Roll and the Snowy Roll as my choices. Carb counters can rejoice, as Koi offers a variety of rolls that can be prepared in "Naruto" style, wrapped in shaved cucumber instead of rice. It definitely gives you the guilt free halo to order an appetizer or one of their tantalizing dessert offerings. Green tea ice cream, anyone? I digress. The Naruto Roll had super fresh salmon and tuna wrapped up in a crunchy and refreshing cucumber wrapper, and was especially winsome during the cray cray humidity and heat we're experiencing in New England. The Snowy Roll was a bit more decadent, in that it had rice (gasp!), but as drizzled with a flavorful sauce that tasted like honey mustard (?) on top. That stuff was GOOD. Ask for extra on the side, and put it on EVERYTHING! We also tried the Chicken Yakitori appetizer, which was good, but drowning in a syrupy sauce that was salty and had an odd texture. I'd skip this, or ask for the sauce on the side, as the chicken was flavorful and well prepared. Service was nice, and our food came out promptly, which was great because I was starving! While we don't get out to Westerly that often, I may just have to make a return trip for Koi! read more

This business is open for takeout during COVID! To retrieve your order customers are only allowed to walk into a designated area of the restaurant to help enforce social distancing/minimize customers congregating. I got the spicy maki dinner combo which comes with a salad and a miso soup. Everything was pretty good! The rolls were tasty and I was a big fan of the miso soup. I look forward to trying more of the menu and am happy this restaurant is open during the pandemic! read more

I wasn't impressed with the quality of the spicy tuna roll I got either time when I dined in or did take out. And one of the times I felt ill the following day. Typically we love Koi but I am not sure the quality of the restaurant maybe going down. We ate there 4/13/24, our daughter ordered a "Philadelphia roll" which has salmon in it. She ordered 2, the first one was fine but the second the preparer used a hard fatty piece of the salmon. She put it into a napkin, we showed management who then said it "just the fat of the fish"! Fat of the fish? When I cook any fish at home I cut off anything, bones, fat, is nor good to serve. Why wouldn't a restaurant who is serving food. She took it off the bill and apologized but it was like she was saying it was no big deal, just fat on the fish! So sad, I would say look at your food before eating it, but that is hard to do in this type of food. Dealing with raw fish and such you would think it should be well trimmed! read more

Repeatedly said thank you most dismissively and on the receiving end it pretty much was used in place of saying screw you for writing this review and that they never advertised as having wifi. So just a heads up no wifi for anyone who likes to use it while eating or having tea etc. Original review: Had spicy salmon, spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls. Let's just say that I couldn't even discern what I was chewing on. I don't know why the fish was all mashed in all three orders with fried batter to disguise any hint of the actual taste. My party ordered the lunch chicken hibachi- ha. Sub par to say the least. Meat dry af, fried rice just okay. Now let's talk service. Both of us are remote workers and when we see a cafe or restaurant with a WiFi network saying guest, we'd expect to be able to log on and use it while we are patrons. The manager keyed it in for my friend, and I later joined and oops, the manager left. So now no one knows the password, so sorry out of luck. On top of that, despite us living in an age of insurmountable connectivity they say they can't reach their manager and no one can provide a password. Two specific waitresses or staff managers came to loudly and condescendingly tell me all about this as if I am in the wrong and demanding something outlandish. I was quite literally sassed- twice. I am not finishing the sushi, never has this happened, because it's a dry paste of old fish that they mashed in with fried Tempura batter. If you like any sort of decency in sushi quality and service I would steer clear of here. Really despicable and disrespectful staff- lost all appetite shaking my head at this whole exchange. Oh but I am sure any sort of saucey roll or maki here will get past the less picky consumer- so if you're not picky the lunch pricing may be to your liking. Tonight was our 2nd stop, of what will be many, at Koi. Our first visit was enticed by a Groupon for $60 worth of food for 4 people for $30 - fantastic deal! Tonight, however was a revisit just because we liked it so much the first time (even though we have another Groupon waiting in the wings). My boyfriend and I opted for the spicy crab, thai spicy, volcano and amazing rolls. None of them disappointed! The Amazing roll is paired with a coconut mayo sauce while the Thai Spicy roll is paired with a cilantro sauce, both of which pair perfectly with the other ingredients in the rolls.
