Not only is the mochilato at Mochilato good (to be expected, given it's its namesake), the gelato is as well (OK, still to be expected given it's HALF the namesake). But the really impressive part? So are the macarons. Macarons done wrong are buttery hell; these are perfectly seasoned creamy melt-on-your-tongue delights. Try the Earl Grey and the passionfruit. I think my favorite thing about this place is that all their flavors taste authentic and natural. I doubt there's a flavor syrup to be found in their kitchen. I can't speak for the shaved ices except to say that I witnessed a family of six demolishing a 'Lovers' size Japanese shaved ice one afternoon, and then witnessed a couple trying the same thing at night (with limited success). Hubby and I bought 6 different flavors and all of them were awesome (creme brulee, pistachio, toasted almond, strawberry, coconut, & I forget the last one?). We actually came one night pretty late, near closing, but they still offered to serve us AMAZING mochi filled with so many great flavors of gelato. So goooood. I was already full, and I still had a giant portion. It's kind of my eternal problem: struggling with fitness and my enormous appetite. First I ordered individual mochi, just to try it out. I got almond, creme brulee, tiramisu, and coconut. They were all phenom. I think the creme brulee may have not matched the other ones well, but standalone it's awesome. By the time I'd sat down, they'd softened up enough to where the skin was nice and glutinous. There were six of us. We shared a "Lover's" sized Mochilato Shaved Ice. My question is: why is it called Lover's if it's actually for four people? This thing was GIANT. What kind of twisted four-way relationship is this? I mean, sounds like a great time, but not my cup of tea. The foursome thing, I mean, not the order itself. ...but seriously. It was delicious. Since I am a Lover of myself, I would totally eat the entire thing myself if I wasn't with five other people. It was about the size of... three rolls of toilet paper? I dunno, that's the closest thing to me right now that I can use to compare. No, I'm not in the bathroom writing this... we keep our toilet paper stash in the living room... Came here on a Saturday night after dinner with my boyfriend craving ice cream and milk tea. What's even better than ice cream? Gelato. What's even better than gelato? Mochi stuffed with gelato. These are not like the ones you get from Asian markets in the boxes. The "Mochilato" are definitely less sweet and the Mochi is melt in your mouth soft! Recommend the matcha one. I got the Rose Milk Tea and it was perfect! If you like floral teas. Most places make this where the rose flavor is completely overwhelming and kind of hits you so hard it's not enjoyable. But here, it was the perfect balance between rose tea and milk. What I also noticed was they had new coffee! I used to come study here when I studied at UCI because it was less crowded in the mornings (Starbucks is ALWAYS packed) and the benches made it a great place to group study. My friend raved about the shaved ice, so I decided to come by. Ended up coming by twice so that I could try two different flavors. I wasn't really a fan of their mochi nor gelato, but I've got to hand it to them, their shaved ice has given me a reason to come back. The first day, I tried the "Italian Way", which is a coffee-themed shaved ice. It's pretty good, but after awhile, the coffee flavor gets a bit boring and monotonous, especially since they serve pretty large portions. A "single" was enough for two of us. The second day, I tried the "Mochilato Way", which was a welcome improvement. It leans more towards the lighter and fruitier tastes than the coffee one, so it didn't grow tiresome at all. The syrup is based on green tea I think, and then the whole thing is covered in various fruits and mochi. Do get a tray even if they don't give you one. Maybe I'm just incompetent, but I made a bit of a mess playing Shaved Ice Jenga while trying to eat the thing. Overall, this might be my current fav shaved ice place. Mochilato is not one of those words that easily comes out of my mouth. I want to say Mocha Latte, but that would be incorrect. Mochi-Lata? Mocho-Lato? Mocha-Lata? Machiato? Arrrrgh! Likewise, those little doughy critters are one of those things that does not go easily into my mouth. There is too much "powder," or flour on the outside, so it either gets all over my nice clothes, or the excess flour forms a sticky paste all over my lips. And once I get the damn thing into my mouth, the gelato is so incredibly cold that I instantly get a brain freeze and go into hypothermic shock. All in all, not a fun experience. So the shaved ice wars are really in high gear and I wanted to find a good shaved ice joint in Orange County. So I stumbled over Mochilato. Of course they are famous for their Mochilato but I noticed the mochi was from packages in the freezer. One small piece is about 1.75 so I figured, no, it's ok, I rather get shaved ice instead. So my friend and I ordered their Japanese style shaved ice and it came with bananas, kiwi, strawberries, mochi, and shaved ice with strawberry syrup and a kiss of condensed milk. The shaved ice was good but halfway through it, it was already melting and tasted like sugary strawberry water so I asked the person making the shaved ice if I can just get a little squeeze of condensed milk and she charged me 75 cents! I should have brought in my own little can of condensed milk which costs 99 cents at the Asian supermarkets and squeezed it on myself. And how much do I get? Let's just say, 1.5 tablespoons for 75 cents...That's why I still love Monster Desserts in the Bay Area and they are expanding and hopefully into Socal and take over the shaved ice wars. read more

STRAWBERRY MOCHI. Far and away the stand-out. I used to badger my bf to drive me here from LA when a craving struck specifically for it! Green tea is also very good as well. And the guava is the most intense, bright, guava flavor I have ever experienced, even more intense than eating a real guava fruit. In addition to the sensational gelato the skin on the mochi is absolute perfection. It's so pillowy with just the right amount of stickiness and chewiness. I also love that they're not the kind of place that makes you feel bad for coming too close to closing time. The lowdown: shaved ice, gelato, and mochi ice cream for the pinkberry crowd. Not a bad place to head with a mixed group of friends after grabbing dinner together. My first time here i came here with a dude friend after eating next door and it was awkward because it felt kind of like a date. I don't think i would have felt that way if i came with a girl friend. It's just that kind of a place. If you do take a girl here, she will probably like it and say something about how she has to come back here sometime. Unlike pinkberry, there is usually plenty of open seating that can accomodate groups. This place has more mochi ice cream flavors than i've ever seen anywhere else. Usually only mango, green tea, strawberry, and chocolate can be found anywhere. That's all well and good, but the opportunity to try such diverse flavors as peaches 'n cream and hazelnut is not one to be passed up. For me, the appeal of mochi ice cream (which, for the uninitiated, is ice cream wrapped in a chewy sweet rice dough) lies not so much in the quality of either the mochi, which was a bit unsubstantial, or the gelato, which was a bit firm and lacked texture. It's kind of a sexy dessert--the mochi is soft, tastefully colored, and has just a bit of give when you bite into it. It shields your taste buds from the numbing coldness of the gelato, letting you experience the flavors in a different way. It's like nibbling on someone's earlobe, if their earlobe were full of ice cream. The mochi ice cream goes for $1.25 a pop, and each is about the size of two egg yolks stacked on one another. I had the raspberry, green tea, strawberry, and plum. My favorite was probably the raspberry flavor. They each cost $2 which is a reasonable price although you could get a box from the grocery store for a bit less, but not as great quality. I also tried a cream puff that my friend got for me. I don't remember the name but I think it was Bearded Papa's cream puff, or something to that effect. A nice little dessert place that offers a variety of stuff with a little Japanese twist. Something cold - they've got mochilato (essentially a mochi ice cream but ice cream is gelato) and gelato. I had raspberry cream mochilato and it was so good! The temperature was just perfect - a right amount of gooeyness of mochi but still cold enough to keep everything together and not melting in your hand as you hold it and eat it. Something not cold or hot - they've got regular traditional Japanese mochi and some with a little California twist. I got peanut butter mochi just so that I could try it. It almost tasted like they've flavored regular shiro-an (sweet white bean filling) with powdered peanut butter. There was no regular gooeyness you'd expect from a jar of peanut butter. It was interesting for the first time. I'll probably stick to more traditional flavors next time. - they've got beard papa here. I had an original with matcha filling. I remembered it to be really sweet last time I had it but it really wasn't! Pretty good stuff! Something hot - they serve stump town coffee here. They do all sorts of seasonal interesting lattes like nutella latte but I'm more of a purist and don't like overly sweetened espresso drinks so I stuck with a regular latte. Well it was pretty good, what you'd expect from a stump town coffee. Pretty fun place with a lot of option. No problem with parking or seating inside (mostly communal style large tables and benches, also some couch seating toward the back of the store). Okay so i went to vegas last last week and became totally broke afterwards, sooooo i've been flipping people's couches finding change hahahah jk! I took my cousin's from Oregon here since it was so hot yesterday and we wanted something to eat that's not overwhelming. I told them about this place and they were interested. We also ordered the Taiyaki's but they didn't have the fish kind only the circle ones, the girl behind the counter was explaining why they can't make the fish one but we were dumbfounded and ordered one round one. Guess how long that ONE taiyaki took......25 minutes...are you serious? Even Genki makes faster taiyakis and they make about 6 when i order them...ugh anyway fan of this place...they should have like a package deal....something like 10 for $$price 20 for $$price etc etc and actually have boxes for them so you can bring them home in to put in your fridge....just a suggestion but if they do actually do that it's my idea! hahah read more

Came here not for the desserts, but the food which I heard was pretty good. Had the kimchi fried rice which was actually pretty darn good considering this was a dessert place. Plenty of spam and butter made the dish savory and rich. Got the coffee as well and was brewed pretty well by the manager no less. The manager reminded me of a poor man's Steve aoki except a lot shorter, a lot chubbier, a lot less cool, and starring an Asian version of better call Saul seeking refuge in a dessert shop hiding from the korean mafia for heinous crimes against them. How have I gone all this time without knowing what mochi is? My gf brought over a box of them from Trader Joe's a few weeks ago... and I've been pathetically hooked ever since. So much so that she sought out an actual store specializing in the stuff. And that brought us here. They've got a really solid selection of mochi here, with lots of flavors that you won't find at Trader Joe's. We decided to get a 6-pack, and I think we filled it with Raspberry, Peaches & Cream, Tiramisu, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Pistachio and another, the name escapes me. One thing that really blows - no good to-go containers. They just pop them into an egg crate looking plastic tray and wrap it with plastic. That's it. They REALLY need to step it up here. At the least, provide a sealed, airtight lid so they have a chance of making it home without melting. They were all so friggin' tasty. Raspberry might have been my favorite of the bunch - it just worked so well. Some of my friends think the texture and consistency of mochi makes it too weird; I think that's what makes it such a unique and awesome dessert food. Seeing as how this is the only mochi store I've ever gone to, I have little else to compare it to, but I'm definitely going to be coming back here to satisfy my craving, but they need to work on making the to-go containers more effective. read more

We finished the icecream and the taiyakis still weren't out. The store was empty except for our table and another table with an older couple. Came in today again to give it another shot. The store had at most 3 tables occupied with costumers. Tried to order the taiyaki. Was told that it's gonna take a long tjme bc there are tickets ahead of me that they didn't get to it yet. I look around... there's like... 3 tables??? Maybe instead of talking amongst eachother and jerking around you could do your job that way it won't get backed up? My rating is based solely on the shaved ice I tried here. My food buddy and I tried the small version of the Italian style shaved ice. It contained fruits, strawberry syrup shaved ice, and gelato on the very bottom. It was really good. I enjoyed every bite of that shaved ice but for how much I paid for a small, I'm not too certain it's worth that much. They even charged for more condensed milk!
