Terrible customer service. They act like they don't want your business. Called ahead to see if I could get an inspection done. They told me I would need to leave it there all morning but what they really meant was that they didn't have the time to do it. At 1pm they admitted that they wouldn't be getting to it any time soon. I get it, things happen and things get backed up. All they needed to do was acknowledge the problem and apologize for wasting my time. Called to make an appointment to get 4 tires mounted asked the price for the service and was given a price of 140.00 no other service performed but they increased the price to 179.99. when I asked about the increase all I got was an I'm sorry. when I got the quote I was put in hold while she checked it out to made sure she said. Avoid this place. Very expensive, poor quality work, and they misdiagnose and over-diagnose car problems. They patched a slow tire leak, and when I brought it back because it was still leaking they charged me again. A short time later I brought the car in for a check engine light. They diagnosed seized calipers (the code was for the thermostat), then walked it back when they realized the wheels had been reassembled improperly during a previous visit. Still charged me for the damage from the shoddy job. As to the expense, it's expected for auto shops to mark up parts and even labor by a margin of 2x, but this place marks up by more than 5x. The justification is a "lifetime warranty" that's unenforceable (where is the contract?) and can't be used practically (most cars change hands after a few years). They regularly add $150+ in miscellaneous fees and don't honor the website coupons unless you really press, and those coupons really just remove the extraneous, tacked-on fees. Given this pattern across multiple visits, you're better off going somewhere else. read more

They are friendly, have a nice waiting area and a shuttle. However, they have never successfully fixed anything with my car. They do stuff but it doesn't equal a fixed car. I am beyond frustrated after concerns have gone inadequately addressed and now have had to jump start my car for the 3rd time. I have had 2 batteries and a throttle body replacement and it's dead again less than a month later. read more

Limping a smoking luxury suv with out-of-state tags into a small town auto repair shop midway through a cross-country drive on Thanksgiving weekend (full of luggage and a dog) wasn't a good start for the day. The team at Modern Automotive pulled out all the stops and got my family back out on the road in a day and under the initial estimate. The team here is straightforward and get the job done. In addition, they are very kind, accommodating, and go well beyond what is expected. The closest dealership said the complicated repair was going to be a week, and I should rent a car and finish the trip (and fly back to collect the repaired car). The guys at Modern Automotive got it done in 8 hours and had me back on the road that night. They called the manufacturer to get input on the repair, sent one of their guys on a 2 hour drive to get unique euro car parts, welcomed my entire family (and dog) into their shop, and also loaned us a car to tour the local area and take in the sights while they hustled and repaired the car. read more

I will start by saying the young guy with glasses (I think his name is Daryl) was very respectful and kind. I took my Jeep Grand Cherokee in for an inspection with confidence and pretty high hopes of passing, however, that was not the case due to two things which are very minor, and I have already ordered the two things I need to fix it. I was an assistant at auto master tire and service in Blacksburg Virginia before they closed, which exposed me to the Automotive/shop knowledge and terminology within a workplace. Not including just my overall exposure and experience, growing up around cars and trucks with me being a female, I feel that I am automatically looked at in an ignorance or lack of knowledge light and that really did shine through with some of the guys today at Modern Automotive. The one guy upfront with the long beard and tattoos was very rude and did not speak to me like a normal human being. His coworker even made a couple of comments and acknowledged his unprofessionalism. To top my bad experience off I get in my vehicle and they hardly removed the old inspection sticker left it very messy and half placed the rejection. Which gave the impression of having the mentality of not my problem and pettiness. I do not typically leave reviews. This is actually my first review ever but I feel this needs to be addressed in some way. Normalize not having such a rude and sarcastic. Ugly personality, and being a stand up customer service representative. Just because I am a female doesn't mean you need to talk down on me when it comes to talking about vehicle's. Good Service. Great People. Honest. Understanding. I broke down mid road trip in little ol' Christiansburg VA. I was worried about finding an honest mechanic in a town I had never been to especially because I had no time to do research. Modern Automotive was the first place that came up in Google and I went there. I was in good hands. I first spoke with Thomas Morris who immediately put me at ease with his honesty and genuine problem-solving attitude. I left my car with them and continued on my trip in a rental. Through a series of MY mistakes and lack of ability to figure out how to get my car back once they had completed the work, it was left there for far more than the original time I thought it would be. But they were extremely gracious with me and helped me figure out a good solution. During this time I spoke much with Chuck Swain (Owner) over the phone. He was incredibly generous, good-hearted and honest toward me. It was so refreshing to meet honest businessmen like these, and I would recommend their service to anyone. Thank you guys. read more

Paid $75 for diagnostics on brakes. I was told on phone all 4 wheels needed pads and rotors and a system flush. Quoted $1200. Declined work. When I paid for diagnostics the written quote was less than $900. I immediately took it to another shop. No charge for diagnostics. I only needed pads on front wheels. Rotors were fine. My wife is a Traveling nurse from out of state. Beware rip off. I give them one star for answering phone. read more

[ ] I'm extremely disappointed in the customer service of this company and their customer care. It's very unfortunate to have such a dishonest and greedy company in our community and even more unfortunate that a lot of people probably get ripped off by them without even knowing or thinking to question it. The beginning of our story is my boyfriend bringing in one of our cars to be diagnosed for the slave cylinder on our 2009 Toyota Corolla XRS only to be told the entire clutch assembly needed to be replaced, which it did not, and on top of that the estimate was over double the high end of the typical cost for this part and labor which they stated was due to their lifetime warranty which is absurd. It's only a lifetime warranty because you've already paid to have it done twice which is extremely dishonest and also makes me question the competency of their mechanics if they require payment for a future fix on every car that they work on. It should not be necessary and beyond that the part already comes with a warranty so double is making you pay for a warranty you've already paid for. Once we finally got them to give us a quote for just the slave cylinder, same deal. The real issue I have with this company is the part of the story in the middle where there stated they needed to replace a hose adapter on the car that was damaged, and that while they think it was damaged before, they would replace it for free because the damage was obvious after their mechanic diagnosed the car and they wanted to make sure we were happy with their service. Once we got the car back however, an antifreeze leak that had not existed suddenly was spraying all over the entire engine bay. Not leaking, spraying. There was also the addition of a zip tie holding on the opposite side of the line that needed the adapter replaced. This issue requires a whole new radiator. Now if we had contacted them and they had been willing to even consider that possibly a mechanic could have done it, maybe this would be less of a utter disappointment, but we were completely dismissed. We have pictures from a week before of under the hood with no damage, there was no antifreeze under the hood before we brought it in otherwise I'm not sure why they wouldn't have found an issue with the radiator while it was being diagnosed and didn't inform us of the need for a new radiator, but now the day after there isn't a square inch of it under there that isn't covered. They won't fix their mistake, they say there is no way it's their fault so i suppose lesson learned to the tune of $400, but hopefully I can at least save somebody else the time, money, and honestly future distrust in the car repair industry. It's a sad day when not only a person, but a company, would allow such deception and greed. read more

My daughter had her older 2003 Golf TDI towed in after it died on the highway. We were assuming it might be something simple like the alternator but when they looked at it, it turned out to be the timing belt. These TDIs are known to have a close interference motor but instead of investigating to double-check, the shop ordered the new timing belt and other parts and completed the repairs. Of course, this repair failed and they would only discount the repairs by 100.00. There were 800.00 in labor for the repairs. I would expect the labor costs to be removed when the shop admitted that the repair should not have been completed in the first place. They are very nice people and I would have liked to have them do more work in the future but they lost any future work from us. read more

Went to these guys for a state inspection. But I was in a bit of a tight spot. My inspection was expired and I had a full schedule and had a hard time finding an opportunity for car service. The owner, Chuck, emailed me very promptly about an appointment, helped me work out a time. I went in, the guys at the front desk were extremely courteous even though it was obvious they were swamped with work that day (the phone rang a million times while I was there and both guys were on their toes the whole time) and I cant tell you how nice it was to have a little common courtesy and service with a smile! The waiting area was pleasant, with complimentary coffee and a television. I needed a small repair and new wipers... I was given price options for different wipers and the repair I needed was done promptly. I was charged a very reasonable amount for labor and parts, my car ran a bit smoother when I left (I had only been in there about an hour! nice and efficient!) and I left completely satisfied with the service I was provided. I will be returning when I need good work on my car. Thanks guys!! *Wanted to add an additional note! Just got a follow up on my appointment. Its located just before the Farm House restaurant on Cambria St. Seemed friendly, small clean waiting area. Went into the shop area and it seemed organized, 7 large bays. They do all levels of work, and tires. Though mostly Coopers brand tires, a low cost brand I don't know much about. I was out in about 45 min and $24 for the part w/ service. The bulb was in a tight spot and it was hard for me to get in there. They also had to move the washer fluid res to get there. The mechanic even had to get another person to assist. So over all, I'm glad to check'em out before I really need them. I'd go back. read more

I was pretty nervous since my car went from normal to shaking in a matter of weeks after hitting a pot hole. It felt like something was going to fall off while driving. Anxiety the whole time. These guys gave me an honest assessment of what had to be done (we moved to the area recently and had no mechanic here) and recommended what was best for my (2001) vehicle in the long run. The entire staff was patient, friendly, and hospitable. They also gave me a ride home while I waited which was SO convenient since it needed a few hours. I am on a Memorial Day vacation and decided to find out the cost of my car if I trade it in. I selected the option that I was not interested in trading in my car. No sooner than five minutes after I find out the cost of my car I receive a call from modern automotive. I told the lady I was not interested in trading in my car and wondered why my information was sent to them? Why they are calling on a holiday? She got angry and hung up. If I was looking to trade my car in or looking to purchase a new car I would not use Modern Automotive. They clearly do not pay attention to what consumers request. read more

I went to this shop after reading the positive reviews and I wasn't disappointed. My appointment was scheduled quickly and the work was done faster than I expected. All the people I encountered were very friendly and helpful . Note: It is under new ownership so grumpy person is no longer there. I was especially happy that they checked the fluid levels, even though that wasn't a part of the work requested, and found the transmission fluid low. I was having trouble with some tires that I had bought at a different place. I didn't feel like I was getting accurate information from that place, so upon a recommendation from a friend, I took my car in to Modern Automotive. I wish I could remember the person I talked to (owner or manager maybe), but he was very friendly and rode around in my car with me so he could hear what I was hearing. Long story short, after spending some time with the car in the shop they pointed out what was going wrong. It was a small defect in the tire, that while it was annoying, it was not a safety issue. After all that time, and me offering to pay, he wouldn't charge me anything! Great customer service! read more
