Called around to get a state inspection on my car as we just moved from California. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everywhere I called told me I could bring in the car and leave it, but they couldn't even guarantee they'd get to it today.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And I was calling around 8AM. I was sitting in the lobby of a place that told me to come in (for a 3hr wait) and then when I got there (less than 10mins later) the same guy said he wasn't sure they'd get to me at all today! [[HIGHLIGHT]]So while I was sitting there I called a few more places...and finally got a hold of Porter's. They told me to come right in, there was just 1 thing ahead of me[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everyone there was so nice. We chatted while I waited.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is exactly the kind of place I was looking to find in our new city. It was only $20, but it was really the service and speed made this a wonderful experience. I have dealt with Porters for many years with outstanding service. However after both the son and daughter left the shop to peruse different careers, the service there has dropped and is not in the direction that it needs to be going into these days. They hired a new service shop floor manager who when I arrived one day there for an inspection sticker told me that they could not perform the inspection. The shop service manager told me that it was because John was out due to an illness which I fully understood and it happens in life. But the service shop manager then told me they had no other person to perform the inspection for several weeks. I had no other choice but to look elsewhere to take my vehicle for my inspection sticker. If John Porter you read this review please look to hire folks who can help your shop move on and build it back up to the outstanding service to what it once was several years ago. If the folks you hire will not help you out then please make those changes and soon. Thank you. read more

John has been our mechanic since I could drive, over 40 years!! He knows what he's doing and always has time to speak to us. His staff (some of them are family) is great! Willing to help and make sure not only the vehicle is fixed but you have wonderful folks there while you wait. If your vehicle needs service, make Porters your go to place. I brought my car and Porter's held it for two weeks, only to finally call and say they couldn't find any problem. After driving for a while and finding that the same problems persisted, I took my car to a *different* auto shop, which instantly found the extremely obvious issues (such as simply needing a new battery) and fixed them up in ONE DAY. The fact that Porter's would waste my time so badly & fail to do anything is ridiculous. I got the impression that Porter's had overbooked way more jobs than they could handle. Who knows, maybe they have an OK mechanic back there, but that's worthless if they're so overbooked & mismanaged that the guy never works on your car. Incredibly unprofessional. Their phone rep was also rude and very unpleasant to deal with. At first, I thought maybe she was somebody's angry grandmother filling in for a few minutes, but no, they actually decided "hmm, this woman acts like she hates this job and is practically hostile to our customers. Yep, let's pay her full-time to represent us!" I'd heard this place recommended, so I was very surprised by this awful service. From what I've seen, the management feels fine treating customers badly, wasting your time for whole weeks, and totally failing to do jobs that are incredibly simple for other local auto shops. Maybe other people have had better luck here, but my experience was an enormous red flag. I know I'd rather choose a different shop that actually knows how to run a business. read more

I broke down in Roanoke with a bad starter, and had the good fortune of finding these good folks to fix it. They did the job for the exact estimated amount, and also identified and replaced a bad oil pressure sensor on my car. The annoying little oily spots I've had in my driveway the last couple of years are now weathering away. While I camped out waiting for my car, I was impressed with many details of how they operated, including how they talked with me, other customers, and suppliers. These folks here are wonderful. Called them last minute today with a blown radiator and a state inspection needed. They got me in quickly and replaced my radiator and found my Serpentine belt fallen apart. They did great work fast, and reasonably priced. My car had a sheet of metal hanging loose and my dad said that he saw a similar repair online that Toyota charged 400 for and that they were likely to replace the sheet. I decided to give this place a try and it took 5 minutes and was charged 10 bucks to stick a bolt on. I'm sure he was as happy as I am. read more

Came in for a State Inspection CHECK! Made sure to specify that I wanted it checked because I'm from out of town and I still had two days. I waited for 30-40 mins til they pulled my car in. I reminded them while they were pulling my car in, what I wanted and why. They took my car in pulled the sticker and told me they don't do checks. AFTER PULLING MY STICKER! Never once did they tell me while I waited 30-40mins they don't do checks. I had it done at other shops while the car was in for other services and explained that to him and he told me he does it "for people getting oil changes" I would have gladly paid for an oil change and got it checked because I was due per mileage for an oil change. ALL THEY HAD TO DO IS TELL ME THEY DON'T DO IT THE 30-40MINS I WAS THERE WAITING. OR WHEN THEY GOT THE KEYS FROM ME, NOT AFTER THEY PULL IT IN AND PEAL MY STICKER OFF!! I was clear to tell them about what I wanted and why. They rejected it for power steering leak. I know that's what the law says, but It's an 1992 Lexus, if they wouldn't have found that, then I'm sure they could have found something else. They knew I wasn't fixing it right then and there and I was from out of town. read more
