I used to come here back in 2013/2014 for my haircuts. Paul is a rockstar! I'm an Asian woman with short hair, and a lot of times stylists will give me cuts that look like men's hair cuz that's all they know. But Paul knows how to cut the hair on top of my head such that it still looks kinda feminine even though the hair on the sides and back of my head use clippers. Back then, Paul saved regular customer's hair styles in his computer so he would know how to cut your hair exactly the same each time you came back. I love that. I wish more places did that. Anyways, I moved back to the area recently and was so happy that Modern Barber still existed. I made an appt as soon as I needed a cut. When I got there, I asked if he still saved hairstyles on his computer, even ones from several years ago. He asked for my phone number, and checked his computer and voila it was still there! He even had the exact date that I was there last and we chuckled at how it had been 3.5 years since my last haircut. Really though, the time means nothing. Paul gave a haircut as good as I remember. He's got great skill, and I'm happy to see from these other reviews that the other stylists he has in the shop now are just as talented. A friend and I visited Modern Barber on a Saturday afternoon in preparation for his birthday celebrations. He'd been to Modern Barber before and had been satisfied with the job they had done. They are located in a small plaza in downtown Tustin. Their facilities are clean and professional looking. They have a high end feel without any pretentiousness. We didn't have an appointment but my friend was assigned a barber right away. The woman that worked on his hair Kathy, had apparently cut his hair once before and she knew exactly what he wanted despite the somewhat poor job he was doing at telling her what he wanted. He just about said, "please just make it look good" which could mean any number of things to different people but she definitely made it look good and was quick and quiet while she worked. She took time to ensure that she'd removed any loose cut hairs from his face and when she was done with his cut she massaged his head with a warm towel. This entire process cost him $15 before tip. Not bad at all for a place with such professional and kind services. My friend later mentioned to me that the chairs are very comfortable and the owner remembered him from his previous visit. This place has definitely become my friend's go-to barber shop. The waiting area is comfortable as well. They offer coffee and water to guests. I often tend to find myself critiquing barber shops by the hair dos and style of the barbers. All the barbers looked stylish, professional and had great hair. That gives me a sense of confidence that they have good taste. I would consider getting my hair done here myself in the future. read more

The only reason that this place is even getting 2 stars from me is because my haircut is cut nicely, BUT IT IS NOT WHAT I WANTED. The barber shop that I typically go to only has 3 stars and they always give me what I want, but the technique isn't always perfect. So, thinking that a place with a much better rating would do a much better job, I came here. Oh boy, was I wrong. Before I sat down I told her I wanted a flat top with the sides faded. She said okay, she would do it. The haircut in itself isn't horrible. The fade is decent, the lines are clean, but the part that she messed up the most is the top!! My hair was about 2 1/2 inches long before i went in there. Now, I'm lucky if it's even half an inch. When she asked me how long I wanted the top, I told her that I only wanted her to even it out because I want it as long as possible. Now I have this. My eye sight is so poor that when I don't have my glasses on I'm considered legally blind. Since you can't wear glasses while you're getting your hair cut, I couldn't see anything that was happening until it was too late ... This was actually supposed to be my last haircut before i got extensions dreaded in, and now I can't do it because they didn't cut it the way that I wanted it. I am very unhappy and I can tell you now that I will NEVER come back to this place again. Unless I'm trying to go bald that is. -_- read more

I've been coming here for almost 3 years and while everyone here is good, Tommy is by far the best in my opinion. Throughout my time here, some of the popular stylists to go to were Nancy and Helen, but unfortunately both stopped working here since earlier this year. However, after they left Tommy came in and shattered expectations for me. Not only is he very skilled in what he does, he takes great care into detail on how you want your hair cut plus he's just an honest and kind person. He goes out of his way to help you feel welcome and he just brings such good positive energy. You can tell he really enjoys in what he does and he especially cares for the customer. I'm sad that I'll be moving to a new city for a new job soon and so it's gonna be hard for me to find a new person who is just as good as Tommy in every aspect. While you can't really go wrong with anyone here to cut your hair, if you haven't already I'd go to Tommy no question. Terrible men's scissor cuts. I've never had someone so seemingly inept at wielding scissors. Ho Tien Thin Nguyen could not take simple instructions of how I wanted it to look and required a photo, obviously not used to cutting men's hair without a number. She didn't wet the hair at first, making the cut uncomfortable with it difficult for her to work with my hair. She started with thinning shears instead of using them as a finishing touch. She quickly gave up and went to the familiar buzzer with a comb. The result? Terribly choppy look with little layering effect to blend the length from slightly longer up top to a bit shorter on the sides (barely not able to hang over the ears.). It isn't a complete disaster, no major mistakes just overall bad at men's scissor cuts. Try somewhere else, gents. See photo with white backdrop. read more

My SO and I have been getting our hair cut here for over a year now and have never been disappointed. In the past, I'd get Kathy. Sometimes, Paul. Recently, I've been getting trims by Terry. Everyone has been nothing short of masterful. I never feel like they're just dialing it in. My last cut with Terry could honestly rival luxury salons in Newport. She was so thoughtful. She'd stand back, assess, and trim accordingly. I hesitate to sing her praises too loudly because I'm afraid she'll get too busy and won't have time for me. All in all, they're very nice, attentive, and intuitive. It's only through their hands that I've been able to gracefully transition from pixie to lob. They've also managed to regularly tame my SO's unruly Harry Potter-like hair. They really are masters of their craft. And for the price, it's a damn good deal. read more

I asked for a comb over and I got something that looks like a flat top. I wouldn't recommend coming here worse worst $17 dollars ever spent. Came here for the first time and was able to get seated pretty quick. I was cut by a girl(sorry I wasn't able to ask your name!) and I gave her the details of what I wanted (Pompadour top, faded back, and tapered sides). I was very satisfied with the detail, she was able to respond well and fix some noticeable patches. The conversation was very free flowing which made the experience more satisfying. 5/5, great detail on the Pomp and is very good for the price. Will be back really soon! I got a really good haircut here. The barber was really nice. I like the interaction between me and him. The only thing I don't recommend is getting a beard cut because it's easy to do at home and they will charge you $10 for a lil trim. But I do look pretty good right now. read more

Kathy is amazing, I brought my brother to get his cut, and she did a good job on him, I came in the next week and got mine done and she did an awesome job. Shes very detail oriented. I truly enjoyed my experience here and the prices are very reasonable. My traditional cut is a skin fade and some barbers charge upwards of $25 plus for this cut and include a tip and your spending close to $35 a cut. I cut my hair about once every 7-8 days and at $35 dollars that can added up quickly. The staff here was very friendly and truly care that you walk away satisfied with your haircut.
