Wifey ordered an espresso- she said it was very sour. She's Italian, and an avid coffee aficionado, so I tend to listen to her opinion. I ordered a pretty drink I saw on a poster. I think it was the coconut dream. Unfortunately it was far prettier than it was tasty, so while i loved the picture for the 'Gram, I won't be ordering it again. We got the GF glazed donut that they put in a bag instead of a box and the icing stuck all over the bag instead of the donut. The donut was pretty dry inside as well. This restaurant is a mess. Its very inconsistent. The staff is constantly changing. It used to be a neighborhood cafe and the staff all knew the neighborhood, and now its rotating staff who doesnt know anything. The bakery items are always made different. The bagels themselves were honestly impressive. If I hadn't known they were gluten-free, I probably wouldn't have guessed. The texture and flavor were surprisingly close to a regular bagel. We ordered the Greenlight Bagel, the Avo & Smoke, and for drinks the Raspberry Matcha Latte and Cookies & Cream Latte. The Greenlight Bagel was my least favorite. There was an overwhelming amount of dried dill and garlic. If you're a big garlic fan, you'll probably love it, but for me it completely overpowered the other flavors. The Avo & Smoke was decent, but I was disappointed by the amount of salmon. The slices were extremely thin. The drinks were actually really good!! I normally don't enjoy HOT matcha lattes, but the Raspberry Matcha Latte was surprisingly delicious. The Cookies & Cream Latte was also very good and not overly sweet, which I appreciated One thing that really stood out was the service. Amazing place! My wife is celiac so I always look for a place to get her something that we can share on a Sunday. Some places have a few items here and there, but this store is completely gluten free! Cookies, bagels, cakes and bread! I got a couple bagels, a donut, a slice of Baka bread and a brioche loaf. The latkes are the best! Glad there are so many options from bagels to sandwiches to pastries...etc. The bagels are not bad. My biggest complaint about this place is that many of the breads are made with oats. Even though oats are supposed to be gluten-free there is often cross contamination with wheat, barley and rye during farming. And even if oats are certified gluten free, some celiacs experience a negative reaction to avenin, the protein in oats. I was maybe selfishly just hoping I could get a baguette from here but alas it is made with oats. Regardless, glad this place exists! read more

Per usual, I blacked out and ordered a challah, focaccia, parm roll, chocolate rolly thing, Jerusalem Egg sando, spicy feta open face sando, oat milk latte, and their version of a PSL (which was too sweet for me but my partner loved). I waanntt to call 911 to report a crime against me by not having a croissant or pain au chocolat, but I'll hold the phone bc everything was so yummy! The Jerusalem sando was so fresh and delicious on a brioche roll. As I'm writing, I'm lamenting my poor decision to not get a pop tart, but there's always next time. Gluten-free can be this good?!! I've tried gluten-free pastries before and always thought they were terrible until I found this place. I walked in, ordered something and then walked back and asked if it was gluten-free, and honestly couldn't believe it. It was unbelievably good like, can't-even-describe-it good. We got the chocolate rugelach, and it was perfect. Just the right amount of sweetness, the chocolate was rich and slightly savory, the filling was soft and nutty, and the pastry itself basically melted in your mouth. And then--the price. $3.25. Just like a regular pastry. But this? Way, way, way better. The service is amazing, too they even given me a free pastry before. WHAT!!! The place is beautifully decorated and super cozy. Yelp should've put a better description so people like me won't be spending $37 for breads and bagels that are not their preferred taste! Anyways, I bought: 1 butter Croissant: very oily, hard and inside is not airy 3 bagel: hard almost stale-feeling 1 grainless carrot muffin: soft & moist, it has very weird taste. A cute little gluten free bakery and bagel place! I've been craving bagels and good gf bagels and treats are hard to find. Street parking is a bit hard to find but I got lucky with a spot under a tree in the residential area just half a block away. I got the zaatar egg salad sandwich on a superseed bagel. It was good! The egg salad was really creamy and light and paired well with the tomato and lettuce. I added some tapatio and it was delicious! The bagel was just okay. Because it was so dense and the egg salad was so light, every bite ended up squeezing the egg salad right out of the sandwich. I also got the flourless carrot cake (gf and dairy free!) and it was sooo delicious! So moist, fluffy, and yet with the perfect crumb - I would never have been able to tell it was flourless or gluten free. There aren't a lot of seats available so it's more of a grab and go spot. read more

I have been following them on social media for quite some time and wondering when I could check them out. Both of their locations are not convenient however I thought it would be easier to park at this location. Street parking during the weekday was easily found. The shop is easy to miss. My cousin walked right past it but that was easily rectified. I loved seeing all the bread and goodies. Grateful they had Gluten Free items with dairy, because so many places have gluten free and dairy free. I like vegan but I'm not vegan. We shared lunch. They had 2 chairs inside which I wish there was a little more seating but I'll get over it. We split the Quiche which we both agreed was our favorite and the open faced bagel sandwich with egg, avocado and feta. I think it was feta. Delicious! Now for the items I brought home. The plain flaky croissant wasn't quite as light as a regular one but the flavor was spot on. I would buy that again. The chocolate rugalech that we sampled was great so I bought the lemon poppyseed. I'll stick with chocolate. I bought chocolate chip cookies. They were okay- other items like the Chocolate Babka are a better buy. Planning on another visit because from Pasadena it's a trek, but so worth it. Oh, and the woman who helped us was awesome. Service was great. Her recommendations were appreciated. read more

It poured this morning, but before I went to my PT in Santa Monica the sun came out, the sky was blue with beautiful puffy white clouds and all was good in LaLaLand. I decided to check out a new bakery on Montana in Santa Monica called Modern Bread & Bakery. This joint took the place about a year ago of BreadBock and it claims to have award-winning bagels. I hope with my lower bar that they are just very good because everything in this bakery is gluten-free. Being born in NY but raised in Venice CA, I have had great bagels, then becoming Celiac 25 years ago I have had GF bagels that might be better used for ring toss. Over the past number of years as my disease has exploded, I have discovered fantastic Pizza, pasta, pastries and even cannolis that are close and sometimes as good or better than their wheat counterparts. Here, the donuts, cakes, and bagels look spectacular. I ordered one bagel of the month, an all everything bagel, a caramel Twix Babka and a glazed brioche doughnut that the server behind the counter said was their best seller. I have not tried everything but the everything bagel was everything I hoped and the donut was very good. So the proof is in the babka, or is that bagel? I am so excited and blessed to have a gluten free bakery back in this space on Montana. I tried modern bread and bagel last Saturday and already had to go back for more goodies. For non celiac people, remember that it is easy to take being able to eat normal bread products for granted. When us celiacs have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful bread product that is as close to the real thing as possible, it's truly a moment to be cherished. The bagels at modern bread and bagel and hands down the best gluten free bagels u have ever had. They are so flavorful and the closest thing I have experienced next to the gluten containing counterpart. My partner barely could tell the difference. The shroom sandwich is addicting. I love the mushroom patty so much. I like to add a nice vegan cream cheese and need to eat it once a week. I also adore their donuts. From the glazed strawberry and chocolate to the Boston cream pie, all of the donuts are super fluffy and delicious. I cannot wait to come back and continue bringing friends. I love bagels. I got the farmers bagel filled with fresh, crispy vegetables. The tomatoes were haphazardly sliced with varying sizes making it not fun to eat. The bagel could be fluffier. But it is gluten free! Smoked salmon bagel. Again the salmon seemed piled up. I hope it was a fluke as it got very busy, leaving not much care to assemble the bagel. For fifteen plus dollars I was hoping for a bit more value. There's a ledge with some stools for eating inside. The pastries look absolutely scrumptious. The service is very nice. read more

VEGAN REVIEW Gluten free is usually not vegan friendly (despite restaurants constantly telling me "no problem, we have gluten free" when I say I am vegan...), so I was excited to find this spot. Came for breakfast sandwiches. Most of the bagels have an egg wash (why why why), but there is a vegan brioche & the everything bagel is vegan. You can get fully vegan sandwiches by subbing out vegan eggs, cheese & bacon/sausage for an extra $3. They also have a few vegan baked goods-- we tried pumpkin bread (thanks for the freebie!) & double chocolate zucchini bread. Everything was tasty. I love Modern! I've had them back in NYC and I was making the trek to the valley at least once a month to grab goodies from their Woodland Hills location . Well, no more! This location took over the old Breadblok location, which is really nice for those of us with Celiac-the kitchen was dedicated before. Modern is 100% gluten free but you would never know it-they don't advertise as such and even my gluten eating friends love their food. I've always been an everything bagel girl and theirs do not disappoint-although you really can't go wrong with anything here. Husband got a breakfast sandwich and said it was somehow better than the ones he's had at their other locations. We plan to go back for lunch this week. Parking is metered or side streets. They are currently soft opening but have a full menu. Limited spots to eat, but hopefully they can utilize the outdoor space once they are up and running! read more

I love Modern Bread but this is a very small location, compared to the Woodland Hills restaurant. It looked like they have the same menu. They only have 2 bar stools for seating. My favorite is the Farmers Garden open face bagel and it was just as good, though missing the crushed tomatoes. They had one Vanilla Crème Monkey bread left and I snatched it up right away- that is my fav treat. It's croissant dough filled with vanilla pastry creme. I'm not sure if I just went at the wrong time, or maybe it was an off day for them, but their GF treats are mid. I would not recommend them. The challah roll, which the cashier pretentiously corrected us on the pronunciation, was STALE AF. You are kidding yourself if you think this is an authentic representation of a challah roll. It weighed like 3 pounds and was super dry and gross. It also costs like $11. My fiancé took a bite and we threw it out. I don't even think the homeless of LA would want it that's how bad it was. For a stale, dry piece of bread that tasted like a rock, you should not be charging $11. Either make a soft, delicious, actual challah roll or don't make it at all. You should be EMBARRASSED to be selling this and calling it a challah roll. Their bagels are also pretty dry. My fiancé and I shared the B.E.C. The contents were pretty good--it was the best vegan sausage we have had and the mushrooms in it were so tasty, but the bagel itself was super dry. Really, if you're not going to make GF stuff actually taste good and soft, then don't bother making and selling it. I won't lie to you like other reviewers here and say the baked goods are so soft and tasty. If you want a GF bakery that TASTES GF, you've come to the right place. I myself bake GF desserts (scones, cakes, cookies, brownies, babka, loaves, pies) because my fiancé has an allergy, and my treats come out way softer and more like regular, non-GF treats. This experience makes me want to just stay home and make my own bagels now. I saw some other reviewers saying "oh it's a bit dry but it's GF!" As if this is expected. No, it's not expected. I liked the cozy and modern atmosphere of the place, especially the cool woven boat lights! The bagels from the other pictures and reviews looked big and packed with toppings so I gave the place a try. However, the bagels were a little smaller than I expected and it was a little tough to eat from toasting it.
