Fine with us because we were hungry and our server/bartender was quick, attentive, and friendly! Even willingly explained where seitan comes from to my boyfriend lol We got the strawberry basil sangria (YUM I got two) and my boyfriend got a beer for his second round (it was huge and 8% alcohol). For an appetizer we went with the buffalo tempeh wings and they were gone within 2 minutes. Hands down our favorite thing we ordered - buffalo sauce that was just spicy enough, avocado ranch to offset the heat, boneless of course (yay), and tasted just like chicken! Modern love is my new favorite vegan place. Really, everyone, if you're on the fence book a reservation ASAP. I came here with 3 friends on a Friday evening and we had previously made a reservation. Our group was mostly vegetarian or vegan so we have been really excited to Modern Love together. We were seated immediately. Service was really attentive and we were told about the daily specials soon after sitting. We shared the Brussels sprouts to start. Super tender and flavorful, and a great portion for sharing amongst four. Two of us got the Mac and Shrews. Hands down the best vegan Mac and cheese I've ever had. The cashew based sauce is amazing and not that Daiya grossness that every other restaurant serves. It came with kale, cauliflower and crispy tofu which was really yummy. Bonus points for being gluten free as well, which was a great plus for my vegetarian + gluten free friend. It was a huge portion so I ended up saving half of it to go home with. I was honestly really looking forward to trying this place out after seeing reviews and following them on Instagram for awhile. However I was surprised that my food (particularly the Seitan), was not at all crispy as advertised but instead hard/weirdly chewy. My bf ordered the seitan with mac and cheese and while he did like it, he agreed with me that the seitan was not crispy as advertised either. First off, WOW. Ordered takeout (pickup) TODAY and was honestly blown away. I got the Chickpea Parm and it was out of this world. I am not a vegan, nor would I ever try to be. The roommates and I ordered ML for delivery (COVID, duh). K.I.S.S.: The cauli-wings were amazing. I feel like this is on the menu of practically every vegan spot ever and they're usually pretty good, but ML does them really well. Their hot sauce is truly great. Additionally, the bucket brings A LOT. Three of us shared them and there were still leftovers. It also comes with a side of sliced small carrots, celery, and homemade ranch that none of us were really into (the ranch, that is). I really enjoyed my mushroom burger. I'm not into the whole "let's eat fake meat that tastes like meat," since I'm not a vegan and would just eat a cheeseburger if I wanted meat, so I loved that it very much tasted like super hearty mushroom. It was really delicious. A little too much bread, but I'd eat it again. Also, v. filling. The lemonade was great, although honestly, it just tasted like great lemonade. I don't know about this whole butterfly pea flower stuff, sounds like a trick to get people to buy more lemonade. It's also way less vibrant in color than the one pictured on their menu. Roommates seemed to enjoy their food, although they said they preferred Champs over ML. ML feels healthier. Finally, we did have an issue with our order. The entire vibe is awesome inside. I was a little drugged out (it was my bestie's birthday!!!) but the sangrias here were so much fun and inventive. I had a lavender sangria which I recommend because, well, lavender. Be warned... it is PACKED! The only place more busy these days than a restaurant on a Friday in New York is a vegan restaurant on a Friday in New York. (I'm telling you... animal cruelty and murder is OUT.) The menu has sooo many options. All of them vegan! And all of them DELICIOUS. I tried a little bit of everyone's food because 1) I was drugged out as I mentioned & 2) I had just never seen so many different vegan cuisines. Modern Love had been on my radar for months. Not only do I follow this establishment on IG but also Isa Chandra herself. Naturally, when Alex asked me to pick a place for New Year's dinner, I had no problem doing so. Modern Love is a dimly lit, romantic type setting with an earthy upscale vibe. Reservations are needed if you would like a table. Didn't know that so when we arrived, there was 1.5 hour wait for a table. Seats at the bar are first come, first serve. If it wasn't for the insane wait time, my super excitement to eat here no matter what and my hungrayyy status, I wouldn't recommend sitting at the bar. It's an uncomfortable amount of space where you can't move an inch without bumping into the person next to you. Our waiter / bartender provided us great service. He gave us small talk, sampled beers and Kombucha on tap and offered his personal favorites. While it was difficult to choose from so many popular choices, I ended up going with the Buffalo Tempeh Wings and Truffled Poutine while Alex got the Hen of the Woods Piccata. Before this review turns south, I would like to point out that the food presentation was on point. Aesthetically beautiful and plated really well, I almost didn't want to touch it. When I took a bite of each dish, my excitement turned into confusion. Was the food undercooked? Why are the poutine fries so hard and chewy? Is the tempeh supposed to be so grainy and dry? Where's the flavor? Please pass the salt .. If it weren't for the intimate and sorta intense conversation (marriage debate) I was having with Alex, I would have voiced my dissatisfaction with the staff. This was the first meal of our long weekend of gorging ourselves on famous Williamsburg vegan eats. We were starving when we arrived at 3pm but I waited until 4pm to order food because that is where their dinner specials go live for on-line ordering. Ordering on-line was fast and easy and I food was ready in under 30 minutes. This was our "lunch" and we were still planning to have dinner later because, well, our spreadsheet of restos was longer than our weekend could accommodate so, we had to squeeze daily fourth meals and a few bang bangs. The plan had been to order light, but that was hard. I almost never order pasta in restaurants, but the purple cauliflower alfredo really caught my eye. Additionally, it seemed fancy, and Modern Love is known for its fancy food but because of Covid, is serving more fast-casual comfort food, so I thought this would give me a little taste of the fancy. We also ordered the wings because, well, we are from Buffalo so we feel obligated to eat and judge all the vegan wings of the world. We had to get the fried maitake/chicken, my eyes had bugged out when I saw they would have vegan pumpkin cheese cake a special that weekend (the pecan crumble on top really pushed me off the fence), and, because I wanted to kick off a weekend of eating junk of with what might be our last green vegetable, I ordered the kale caesar with a chickpea cutlet on somewhat of an impulse. I never order salads in restaurants because I make them all the time at home, but adding the cutlet helped justify breaking my normal habits. Let me tell you, everything was amazingly delicious. The pasta was so tasty and so fun with the lemon wedge that once squeezed, turned the pasta sauce from light purple to hot pink. The wings were crispy and sauce and meaty and great. The fried mushroom with caulimash and slaw was good too, but, the kale caesar was a surprise show stealer. In fact hubs, who I am not sure has ever agreed to eat raw kale before, ranked it as one of his favorite meals of the whole weekend. The salad was a mix of lacinato kale and lettuce, had a great dressing, cheesy croutons, and bacony mushrooms. He even said the chickpea cutlet, which was great, was not necessary to make this an awesome salad. I actually stole a bunch of the cutlet for my pasta dish. Coming here really brought things full circle. As Buffalonians, we are huge fans of the Toronto VegFest and go every year. This year, it is all virtual because of Covid-19 so this trip was sort of a replacement for VegFest. I met Isa Chandra in 2012 at my very first Toronto VegFest (and saw her out at dinner later, too) so eating at Modern Love for the first time the weekend before virtual VegFest was pretty cool. read more

I went here last night to meet up with two friends for dinner. I'm not vegan, but I've frequented a few spots with an open mind. This is the first vegan spot where I've ordered a burger and actually finished it in its entirety. The appetizer special we ordered was delicious as well. Even though I would've preferred to order the buffalo cauliflower wings on its own, instead of the $17 special as a whole; it was amazing! I even had dessert (warm brownie with ice cream) and I never order dessert. Definitely worth the money and sit down indulgence. The 4 stars are due to them first placing us, a party of three, at a table for a party of two, before moving us (at the request of our waitress). Also, for the seemingly rushed service towards the end of our meal, as we sat indulged in conversation. But, it was almost closing and we were the last ones out, so I get it. We have had a lot of mixed experiences here. The food can be really good some days and then one or two dishes can be egregiously prepared. Case in point: brunch is usually quite delicious but the seitan is sometimes over-cooked and too tough to chew, some dishes are under-seasoned, and I wonder if anyone ever checked before serving it. These are not the types of mistakes a place charging as much as they are should be making. I have 6 of Isa's cookbooks and adore her recipes. The trip to Modern Love was a pilgrimage for me. And, it turned out to be a huge disappointment. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the French toast and tempeh. The French toast tasted like grilled bread - no flavor. The tempeh was also flavorless, and cold, like someone had just opened a package of tempeh, sliced it, and set it on the plate. This is so confusing. I use wonderful recipes for French toast and marinated tempeh from Isa's cookbooks - why wouldn't the restaurant know how to make something flavorful and tasty? The service was appalling (besides one delightful waitress named Pamela who checked in on us multiple times even though we weren't her table, like she could tell that we were otherwise receiving no service). For example, here's what happened when we ordered tea (the restaurant was not busy): - We waited 7 or 8 minutes. - The waiter came and told us they were out of tea. - I had teabags in my purse and said that hot water would be fine. We waited another 7 or 8 minutes, nothing. The food came, I asked again for hot water. Finally he brought some. - 10 minutes later, there was no refill. I got up from the table to ask for a refill. Several minutes later he came with a pot, poured water into our mugs, only for us to taste it and realize the water was room temperature. - We asked for hot water, someone said they'd get it. 5 minutes later, nothing. We asked again, and were told, "We have to boil water, it's not ready yet." - Then, when the bill came, we were charged $3 each for tea! I am a huge fan of Isa's recipes, and I was astonished at how poor the eating experience at Modern Love was. I hope she or one of the other owners can inject some TLC soon! read more

Went the other night with a friend for last minute dinner plans. Upon arrival the next wait for a table was 45 minutes so we were totally cool with taking a counter table to eat (if you are impatient I suggest making a reservation). We had a very polite waiter who was very prompt and available if we had any questions. My friend and I ordered the mozzarella sticks as an app to split and these are by far the best vegan mozz sticks I've ever had. I REALLY appreciate that each entree is packed with flavor and served in large portions. Loved dining here for Sunday Brunch this past weekend, although their dinner menu definitely has some super creative takes on "regular" dishes I just MUST try such as the BBQ cauliflower "wings", the tofu fish & chips, the oyster mushroom scampi, and the pesto burrata gnocchi. I absolutely want to come back and try them all! We do what we always do at brunch with the fam, and that's ordering get one sweet, and one savory dish. My Nutella loving gal chose the Banana Nutella French Toast with caramel, toasted hazelnuts, coconut whip, and a cherry on top, obviously. It was a super hearty portion...two thick slices smothered in ooey, gooey sinfulness, (but not really because it's plant-based, or at least that the way I look at it). It was as sweet and almost too much too eat...almost. I can't imagine one person finishing this dish alone. I only had a bite or so and that alone was enough to satisfy a sweet tooth craving. My lil gal is not a fan of coconut and somehow managed not to be turned off by the coconut whip. Those who aren't fans shouldn't worry about that topping. Delish! I focused more on the tofu eggs benny which I LOVED!! That creamy, thick hollandaise was so incredible!!! Everyone at the table loved the perfectly seasoned roasted potatoes that accompanied it too. The tofu was a thicker grilled slice and was surprisingly flavored well. The smoked tomato hidden underneath gave it the dish a welcomed acidic punch. Perfect! The edible flowers gave the plating such a pretty pop of color and even the local greens lightly dressed were tasty and a nice healthy addition to the plate. The only miss for us was the carrot cake my daughter persistently insisted on. It was a tad dry, hard and a bit cold, like it had been sitting leftover in the fridge all weekend. The flavors were wonderful, but the texture was off. The cream cheese frosting was amazing and I personally liked the candied ginger, she, and some may not. I feel this could've been another home run if it were room temperature. Whomp whomp. This will surely not make me give up on their desserts however....the warm browning with PB cookie dough ice cream was our runner up and perhaps would've been a better selection. Next time! We arrived Sunday afternoon around 1pm with no ressies and were somehow seated immediately. The adorable, homey yet chic place was a smidge on the smaller side so calling ahead couldn't hurt. Service was top notch. Parking right out front, unmetered, was not an issue. Can't wait to come catch for dinner and taste more plates and those intriguing cocktails too! I only give this place a 3 because of its inconsistency... unfortunately it's never a sure fire hit when it comes to their menu items (some of which is seasonal). My biggest critique is that the chefs are salt-phobic. I'm highly sensitive to salt but its like none is used at all. The seitan needs salt, the Mac and shews needs salt, the corn pudding needs salt, the tofu needs salt. It's like they used all their energy for creative vegan solutions but forgot the fundamentals of cooking sometimes. The fried oyster mushroom and mash is always delicious though. 9/12 I came back to try the Philly cheesesteak & it's def my fav on the menu. They have a new desert menu & I'm heartbroken that they removed the s'mores Sunday but the tiramisu with a side scoop of chai ice cream is now my new fav desert. This isn't my 1st time here. The cauliflower wings taste has a great flavor to it but doesn't actually taste like wings. I had the mozzarella sticks which tasted really good, it doesn't have that stringy texture like regular mozzarella and I actually prefer it that way. The mozzarella sticks has a crunchy texture on the outside and the inside is filled with cashew cheese (I think) which goes great with the sauce. I'm not a fat of the raspberry cheese cake only because the raspberry on top has a very tart taste to it. When I order the cheese cake I usually eat everything but the raspberry sauce on top. I like the Mac and cheese minus the tofu on top. I wish I would just have the Mac cheese because that taste really good. Overall their in house cheese is AMAZING. This place never fails me !!! OH MY GOD. I heard about this place and really went here because of proximity, but damn... they have won me over. My boyfriend and I, both vegan, tried the poutine as the appetizer and had to stop ourselves because we were nearly full before the entree even came. The gravy was tasty and the portion was extremely generous. We ordered a chicken cutlet to split between us and it was crazy because their cutlet tasted like milanesa! It was what our Hispanic moms made for us growing up. We didn't finish the plate but took every bite we possibly could. The plates are more in price than I'm typically used to but so were the portions. To be honest, I could have ordered the appetizer alone to share with my boyfriend and still have had food left over. The quality of the food is unparalleled. I haven't seen any nicer vegan restaurants in terms of setting and food to this extent. I'm definitely going again. read more

Great place, great food, NOT great service. We were rushed which is fine when the place is packed....not so much when plenty of tables are available. As for the food, we tried the Poutine and found it nice and feeling. The Mac and cheese was out of this world. Their version of steak however was too lemony for my taste. MODERN LOVE BROOKLYN IS BY FAR ONE OF MY FAVORITE FAVORITE FAVORITE VEGAN RESTAURANTS. I wish any carnivore would come here and see that vegan food is not just boring salads. DELICIOUS. LOVED LOVED LOVED MODERN LOVE. Here's what we ordered: - Oyster mushroom calamari: SO well done. Bravo!! So light and crispy and that sweet, sour, spicy sauce was amazing. I want to eat an entire plate of it, but unfortunately I had to share. - Buffalo tempeh wings: Crispy on the outside, buffalo sauce on point, and the dressing that went with it cooled it down and didn't make me miss ranch/blue cheese at all. It's definitely heartier version than the cauliflower version at other restaurants. - Mushroom Brie Burger: OMG this vegan burger patty surpasses all others. I'm not the biggest fan of the impossible / beyond meat burger. If you're trying to be plant based and eat less processed food, I'd say stick to things that are whole ingredients and not overly engineered. You definitely do not miss the meat or need that meat texture to satisfy your cravings for burger in this one. The cashew brie is melty and oozing out of the burger, which was so decadent and so good. By far, my favorite dish at Modern Love! I cannot wait to come back and try the other dishes. Every dish looked so good at the other tables. I used to be hesitant to eat at vegetarian / vegan restaurants because they were so carb heavy or bean overload, making you feel just as sluggish afterwards as eating a meat based dinner. I got take out last night and tried a few different things. The Caesar salad, the classic Mac n cheese, and the fried mushroom and gravy dish. I primarily eat plant-based so I try to seek out restaurants like this. I have to say, I wasn't blown away, but I did enjoy the meal. The flavors didn't necessarily stick out to me, but it was satisfying. I would come back and give this place another try! read more
