We had quite a few areas of yard that were overgrown with weeds - they needed to be cleaned up and replaced with weed barrier and mulch. Modern Paving is terrific! We highly recommend them for complete, top quality, well designed work! David is great. He has a fantastic sense of design and is able to see what can be done even when looking at an uninspiring existing installation. We talked to many paving contractors to replace our driveway, walkway, and front porch. Our previous lack of imagination was matched by other contractors lack of vision as to what could be done. David opened up our eyes to the potential vision he could see that would totally improve and change everything for the better. After consulting many other paving contractors, who all offered the same tired designs, David was an inspiring breath of fresh air. He suggested radical changes that initially were shocking (get rid of some old tired landscaping, remove a sidewalk, adding a front garden, widening and adding curves and flair to a walkway, eliminating an unnecessary step (replaced with a gentle slope), and more. We also had a damaged section of our back yard concrete patio replaced by pavers. David's imaginative design was matched by his high technical knowledge of what needed to be built. His crew was extremely competent and careful. Even when the unexpected happened and the crew discovered that the old driveway being removed was laid directly on the water supply line (which should have been way beneath the driveway), the crew extremely carefully removed the old driveway without interrupting water service. It was quite amazing. The water line replacement by a plumbing contractor, coordinating with Modern Paving, was part of our larger project, but the careful demolition by the Modern Paving crew prevented an emergency of a broken water line (which would not have been their fault) and allowed the plumbing crew to replace it as part of the scheduled work. The careful attention to detail by the Modern Paving crew led by Emilcar was impressive. The installation was flawless and looks beautiful. David was on site almost every day, supervising the work. (Not that they needed supervising, as the crew were experts). As part of the work, we had landscape lighting installed. Zach designed where the lights were to be installed and even installed temporary lighting (before burying wires and permanently mounting fixtures) so that we could make sure everything was perfect. Six weeks after MP did my backyard, I had them come out and give me quote for the front of my house. David came out and we spent some time figuring out what would look best and after much thought and deliberation, I decided to take out the entire front yard, about 1,200 square feet of grass and cement walkways and put down a paver courtyard that spans the entire front of the house. The only request that I had is that I wanted the same crew that did my backyard as they did an outstanding job. This is one of the hardest working crews I have ever worked with. They were on time every morning, they cleaned up every evening...they were a pleasure to see every day. The courtyard took about 6 days and although I had a few change orders mid-project David and his crew had no problem staying on track and fitting it all in. My courtyard looks incredible. Modern Paving replaced a wooden retaining wall of ours with a new one using Allan Block. First Kim came out and gave us a reasonable bid on the project, giving us quotes both for an Allan Block wall or a wooden one like we had before. The Allan Block was actually a little less expensive and it looks a whole lot better so we went with that. They informed us when they were ready to start (materials had arrived), and the communication continued throughout the project, first with David as Zach was out sick, then with Zach for the rest of the time. Either David or Zach came every morning to check on things and to inform us on progress. The communication was probably the best we've ever had from contractors working on a project at our house. The workers were amazing, transporting all those heavy blocks to our backyard and skillfully arranging them into a wall. They also installed an excellent drainage system. The resulting wall is frankly a pleasure to look at. We were also impressed at how they cleaned up the work site and our driveway where materials were stored at the end of every day. And when the job was finished, excess material and the portapotty were removed right away. They followed through on everything they promised and built us a beautiful wall. I bid this out to 3 vendors as we have to get HOA approvals and their timely responses, thorough attitude, covid safety/mask compliance and no pressure candor (I asked a lot of Qs) helped place their competitive bid in the top tier right away. I liked their local/family run biz (vs corporate large bulk discount mailer types of places) and total transparency when it came to explaining any glitches we might encounter. (I have big tree roots which I knew would need grinding up and also knew my timetable was tight as the HOA wants projects on and off the plate fast for minimal disruption) During covid many companies make promises but in actuality are months out in booking/follow through w/all the home repairs and supply chain glitches, but Modern Paving kept me apprised every step of the way to ensure we stayed on time/budget; even when they hit rebar mixed in with the cement during demo and explained it required a different disposal fee/mechanism, David was fair and forthright w/the add on, the crew themselves were VERY clean and tidy after every shift and seemed to genuinely have fun as a team together, making for a pleasant/jovial friendly experience. From Kim, the initial point of contact/designer to Roberto the project foreman and David himself who came out to check on the installation of a root barrier which I'd requested, the process was seamless. Kim was our designer. I was really impressed that she was able to give me a lot really good ideas after just taking a quick walk in my backyard. After we've signed the contract, David gave me a follow up call and we discussed our project. I had a few questions about the color and size of the boarder pavers and the circle paver kit. Steve and David are simply the best in the area. They are very professional and deliver high quality work for a competitive price. I've used their services twice in the last few years. My first experience with Modern Paving was a fairly hardcore hardscape job to renovate our front yard. This consisted of dirt removal, installing a French drain. Hand laid Roman stone retaining wall, and finished off by laying a beautiful, low maintenance turf. Steve was instrumental in working with us to make material decisions based on our budget and preferences. Steve was very transparent throughout the process, letting me know any issues that might arise and the possible workaround or added costs. Three years later, the turf and surrounding area looks amazing. Oh ya, they finished on-time -amazing! The second time around, I hired Modern Paving to remove and replace my driveway and add a sidewalk to the eroding street. This also included a walkway around the house finishing off the previous job. Again, Steve was very responsive and transparent about pricing and the process. The finish work is simply amazing and a focal point of our property. To add, we had a bit of an issue with Public Works and their approval process. Steve handled the situation with the outmost professionalism and to our satisfaction. Why doesn't yelp offer a 6 star review...After shopping around with multiple landscape contractors and designers to take on my backyard and side step project it was a breath of fresh air when Steve came by for a visit, because he accomplished both. His attention to detail was better then any of the other 10 bids I shopped around previously. He took what I envisioned in my head, threw it down on a sketch and delivered it 10x better in the final product. We contacted Modern Paving because our old front-yard retaining wall was starting to buckle. From the start, Steve was very professional and responsive to my calls and emails. He presented all of the various options for me to consider - both in terms of price and style/strength. The project pricing was very competitive to other companies in the area. Steve really took ownership of the project, even with dealing with the City of Belmont to obtain the necessary approvals for permitting (this was not a simple process). He communicated with me on a regular basis with any requests for information and on the status of the permits. Once we finally had the permits from the City, we agreed upon a specific project timeline that worked for us and them. In terms of project execution, Steve and his hardworking team adhered to the timeline and were very respectful to my property and the neighborhood and pedestrians. He let me know upfront about the impacts to my landscaping as well as the need to use our driveway for supplies, etc. The finished product is absolutely beautiful! In addition, a drainage system was installed to alleviate issues we usually have during the rainy season. Even after the project was over, Steve met with us to address any concerns that we had. We replaced a couple of walkways, a patio, and a driveway. John helped us through the design process. He helped us go out and pick our patterns and colors. He dropped by a few times during our process to review the progress and answer questions. David was very thorough in making sure all aspects of the job were covered. We routed some underground wrapping through the area in case we wanted to wire up some low voltage lighting or irrigation. He was also very accommodating and receptive to any questions we had. The end result has been great. We've had our pavers for about two weeks now and already have gotten great comments about them.
