Does being a repeat customer say something about how we feel about Modern Paving? We had Steve from Modern Paving come out and install a Roman Stone retaining wall for our front yard. It looks great - a huge upgrade from our original row of shrubs & rotting railway ties. The new wall is solid and the lines are impressively straight! After the job was done, they even came back to replace a few stones that had large scratches on them (no fault of Modern Paving). That kind of care about their work is both highly appreciated and admirable! But after pulling out the shrubs, it exposed the rotted 2nd tier retaining wall. We could have left it as-is, but the workmanship on the new wall was so spectacular that we had to give Steve a call to replace the wood as well. We now have a 2-tiered retaining wall/planter area, and it looks awesome! They were also way ahead of schedule! Now that we're "in the know" we notice when stone walls look wonky and loose. Clearly those homeowners didn't use a reputable company like Modern Paving. Btw, we decided to use Modern Paving because they are a small company with far more personal service. Steve is friendly, sincere & professional - someone you can definitely trust. From my experience, you get results faster working with the owner than easily replaceable representatives of a big company. I didn't want to be in a situation where I'd be shuffled between 7 different people to address any issues. We are so happy we went with Modern Paving and suggest you do the same! read more

I worked with John and David on our project. We had about 2k sq ft of concrete removed and replaced with pavers. John helped us go through our design process and David oversaw the project for us. We replaced a couple of walkways, a patio, and a driveway. John helped us through the design process. He helped us go out and pick our patterns and colors. He dropped by a few times during our process to review the progress and answer questions. David was very thorough in making sure all aspects of the job were covered. We routed some underground wrapping through the area in case we wanted to wire up some low voltage lighting or irrigation. He was also very accommodating and receptive to any questions we had. The end result has been great. We've had our pavers for about two weeks now and already have gotten great comments about them. I highly recommend the whole Modern Paving team and plan to use them again for future projects in our backyard. read more

We looked at five jobs Modern Paving did recently in San Bruno and they all looked great. Our 9 unit townhome development has a driveway of 4,400 square feet. Modern Paving removed our tired old asphalt driveway and dirt down to a depth of one foot. They laid down retaining fabric, base rock and successively finer layers of rock and sand before installing Belgard Catalina Grande paver stones and polymeric sand to lock it in place. We recently had Modern Paving replace our front walkway and driveway and could not be more pleased, start to finish. MP combines artistry, engineering, hard work, and excellent customer service. When Kim came out to take a look at the job, she had fantastic design ideas- so much better than anything I could have come up with. When it came to choosing materials, I knew the pattern and type of pavers I like, but couldn't decide on what color. Kim was unequivocal in her recommendation (grey-charcoal-tan!), for which I was so grateful, and she could not have chosen better. When the job got started, David, Roberto, Amilcar, Javier, Caesar, Oscar, and the rest of the crew were incredibly professional- they kept us informed of every step, answered every question, and left the work site spotless at the end of each day. (One day I saw then hosing the dust off the street, so one may argue they left the work site better than they found it...). Once they had demo'd the concrete driveway, they noticed that we had a drain under the driveway that was choked with dirt and weeds, so they replaced that with a new drain that was angled down to the street to enable better drainage. In addition, we had initially not wanted a curb along the driveway; however, after they began the job and realized what that would look like, David, Roberto, and Amilcar paused to suggest we consider adding a roman stone curb to ensure that the landscaping didn't slope down too steeply and wash onto the driveway. We agreed, and they were able to add this to the scope of work without any delays. Again, they were spot on- the driveway looks GORGEOUS, the curb is my favorite part, and I can't wait to bring them back to redo our backyard too. We recently had our side and backyard transformed into a beautiful patio space by Modern Paving. We worked with David from start to finish and he was amazing through every step of the process! I initially reached out online and was contacted by David quickly after. We set up a consultation to go over our vision and get a quote. David dedicated time out of his day to walk every inch with me and go over some options that would add a lot of value to the project. He listened to my ideas, offered great suggestions and was very up front and honest about what is possible and maybe not. He was very thorough in checking out the space including our drainage and irrigation system to come up with a plan of action. My job was a concrete driveway. I mentioned that when I called to schedule the estimate. David came on time to provide the estimate. But as soon as I showed him a neighbor's driveway exactly like I wanted, he put the hard sell on pavers and said he didn't do concrete driveways. Although the exposed aggregate concrete driveway was consistent with the midcentury modern design of my home, that didn't matter to David. He had 100 reasons why concrete was a bad choice. It didn't matter that pavers were the wrong look IMHO for the short driveway application, David knew better. I had already looked at pavers for another house, reviewed nearby installations, but every issue I raised was because it must have been installed by "2-bit operators". He knew better because of his decades of experience and I must be wrong. Even if I wanted a paver driveway, I'd stay away from Modern Paving. Listening to the customer is an essential skill some estimaters haven't learned yet. read more

We chose Modern Paving to do our long driveway in San Carlos over two other companies given their competitive and clear bid and the ideas Steve offered. (He suggested we change out some concrete stairs and go with a paved landing/step which turned out to be a great upgrade.) Both Steve and David discussed the project with us as it unfolded. Repaved our driveway, installed wall caps all over our landscape walls, sold and installed stepping stone for us, did our entire landscape low voltage lighting project and installation, built a small retaining wall for a planter that we had....end of story, Modern Paving was at our house for a few months because we like them so much we kept wanting more and more done with them. Wow what a fantastic job these guys do! Steve and his team , led by Arthur and Carlos, built a beautiful retaining wall on the steep hill side at the rear of our property, replacing a rotten wooden wall that looked like it would give way any minute. In addition they replaced our lawn with a luxurious green carpet of artificial turf. The back yard has been transformed. During the whole process the team worked really hard , made as little mess as possible , where always quite and courteous , and left the garden immaculate at the end of the project. Steve checked in every day , and even after the project completed to make sure the skip had been picked up etc. We always felt he was on top of the project and that we were in safe hands. I picked Modern Paving over three other firms based on 1) Their Yelp rating of 5. 2) They are Diamond Certified and belong to the Better Business Bureau. 3) The technical presentation by Steve Molof. ( Modern Paving installed a geotextile under the base course but not all of the other firms said that they would do so). 4) Their price I am a retired civil and geotechnical engineer and watched their execution of the work very carefully and am of the opinion that Moderrn Paving did a very good job. Steve and David and their foreman were easy to talk to and work with. David was normally on the job every morning and any minor problems were resolved quickly and amicably. Modern Paving did an excellent job on our backyard redo! We had several pre-planning meetings with Dave and Kim to go over our vision, the plans, and the budget before the work began. Their prices are competitive and during the project, there were no surprise costs. Dave and Kim consulted with us in person, on the phone, and via text every step of the way, so there was excellent communication, and the job was done within the quoted time frame. The crew worked hard in the heat, were on time every day, and did excellent work. They executed our design beautifully, which included large paver areas, 2 walkways, a curved roman sitting wall, a large curved step, 2 sturdy wood posts to connect TRX workout equipment to, 2 planter areas, drainage under the pavers, and a large cedar mulch area for the dog, which he absolutely loves. I did my backyard couple of years ago and had been lazy to put my review here. Steve and team did a great job. However, there was an issue with the way they installed the pavers and creating a slope that caused the rain water to run to my swimming pool. It took me more than 3 months and complain to BBB in order to get them back to fix the issue. It really took them (2 workers) less than a day to resolve the issue. So my impression is 1) they do a good job, 2) good luck getting them back to resolve any issues. read more
