They have 'Squashmallow' plush pet beds which are super duper cute and super soft. Many different characters: yellow pineapple, green frog, and purple octopus. I purchased the purple octopus shown in my pictures. Service: Super helpful and fully answered my questions on pets. They also have a selection of raw food if you are steering in that direction. I have been buying from this store since it's inception... The friendly staff is knowledgeable about the merchandise and high end dog food. Miriam the groomer is wonderful, she treats my corgi with love and the cost is comparable . I needed a leash and harness for my Corgi who is difficult to fit. Sean ( the owner) immediately assisted me and presented a set that fit perfectly. So if you aren't happy with the prices I suggest that you try PetCo. Renting a store in BayTerrace is extremely expensive probably equivalent to Manhattan rates. I don't mind paying a little more for the customer service and quality merchandise. Thanks Sean! I was having a good experience at the beginning, I'm Hispanic so I was talking in Spanish with my husband, while I was looking for more stuff to buy a little shirt fell down with no hanger, so me BEING A NICE PERSON, I picked up the floor and I put it back in the most nicest way possible so they wouldn't have to struggle, plus it was on the floor, I picked up so it wouldn't get dirty. This guy I don't know if he was the owner, but he is bald headed, when I was paying he came to me pretty disrespectful asking me if I found the hanger which I answered him that I didn't because I found on the floor, and he was assuming that I just left it there because I just didn't wanted it, which was not the true then he threaten me of checking the cameras to see if it was true. When I returned to NYC on July 3rd, 2021, after 20 months of being away from home (b/c of COVID), this was the first place I stopped. I went there to buy a treat for my exceptional puppy who was amazing during our 5-6 day journey driving back home from Florida. Long story short we have been coming back here ever since. My puppy thinks everyday is Halloween at Modern Pet. He is in the habit of dragging me here from 20 minutes or more away. In fact, he dragged me here today (Sunday morning) and I was busy telling him they are closed but as it turned out, they were open and in we went. Luckily I have learned to carry money when I walk him so I can pay for the items he wants there. Today it was two bully sticks and a stuffed toy fox. The people here are exceptional nice. I cannot say enough about them. Sebastian was so kind and incredibly patient with me as I bought two different cars there to see if the 4Pets Proline dog box (made in Switzerland) would fit into either of my cars. It did not fit into my Toyota Camry or my Mom's Chevrolet Impala. I jokingly said to Sebastian that if I could I would sell my cars and buy one that would fit the box. Long story short. I sold my car. My Mom sold her car. We ended up with a SUV but as it turned out the 4Pet Proline dog box is too large for my dog despite the exceptional value (currently 50% off) for this high end dog crate. Word to the wise, if you have a medium size dog and spend serious time traveling with your dog, as I do, you might want to check this product out. See the pictures. This brand currently does not have a US distributor and would be hard to obtain anywhere else in the states. But more to the point, the people here are so kind and helpful including the owner, Sean. I was in the Bay Terrace shopping center this evening for some last minute holiday shopping. I passed by Modern Pet and decided to get a Christmas present for my 7 month old kitten Miko. He is an extremely active grey tabby, who is always terrorizing my other 5 year old cat Jaz. I thought, why not get him a cat leash, so I can maybe take him on an outdoor adventure now and then to release his energy. I quickly found the cat section in the back, and picked out a silver and grey cat leash which would match his fur. While I was wandering around looking around at some more cat toys, I was approached by a man who i later found out was the owner, Sean. He was very nice, helpful and personable and engaged me in friendly conversation. He told me about some premium cat food that he recommended for an affordable price. He also informed me that the cat leash I selected was on sale. In addition the leash, I ended up getting a cat dancer deluxe toy, which both my cat Jaz and my kitten Miko responded well too. (See photos:) I ended up signing up for their rewards program and I will be back for the cat food. Anyone who is complaining about prices in these reviews is ignorant about how retail vs warehouses work. large warehouses like chewy don't have to pay overheard or staff and don't have the personalized & knowledgeable customer service like a small mom n pop store like this one has. I love this little pet boutique. They always carry a variety of healthy dog and cat treats, food and other pet necessities. They also have toys, pet clothes and other fun items. They offer grooming which I haven't used yet but I have seen people dropping pets off and picking them up freshly groomed and happy (the pets and the people). There truly isn't enough kind words I can say about this place to give it its great merit. All of Modern pet staff and the owner are amazing! Extremely kind, very informative and not one time have I stepped into this place without someone asking me "is there anything I can help you with?" even the owner himself, and that says a lot. My girlfriend and I found our go-to place for the needs of our cat and rabbit, and we have no problem taking a little drive up to Bay Terrace to pick up supplies. Modern Pet is located at The Bay Terrace: a shopping area with food, retail, and a cinema, so the location is sweeet. The store is somewhat small, but they do have an interesting selection which mostly caters to dogs and cats. We have narrowed down our visits to just picking up Farmina cat food (a small bulk) and Oxbow hay and Oxbow pellets. There isn't too much rabbit stuff, but it will do. The prices, at least for us, seem standard. The staff are always friendly. Despite the fact that it seems like there's always a different face at the register when we come in, we are always greeted and always asked if we need help... so the store does have standards. Furthermore, the staff are usually informative. One time, we were given samples which helped sway us on which cat food to buy (since our princess is picky and we didn't want to waste a $50+ bag of cat food). All in all, a go-to place for us for pet supplies, and we've had little to none to complain about. We have become loyal customers, and five stars is an accurate reflection of our overall business with them. read more

I just adopted a new rescue dog and of course have been spoiling her I was so happy that this store is right in my own back yard ... the staff is always wearing masks I feel very comfortable going in and on top of that each and every one of the employees there has been over the top friendly and sweet to my dog and me ! They have given her treats and talk to her and even one employee won her over even after I warned him she was afraid of boys and I'm working on socializing her so she can overcome her fears ... 5 min later she was in love with him ( his name was Kevin I think ) !!!! For the pet store potion as I have never used the grooming services. A little bit pricier than the big stores but a much better selection of quality foods for your pet. They also have a loyalty rewards program so I feel like the price evens out when all is said and done. Impression from my first visit was high end, expensive boutique store with dog clothing that are high quality but not so practical... (thick stiff wool sweater). Impression from my 2nd visit, high end unique practical supplies and practical dog clothing at SURPRISINGLY AFFORDABLE PRICES. They did have a big sign in the front asking patrons to come in and check out the prices. That was smart because I don't think I would have taken a look. My dog's brand is Orijen and prices are comparable plus there are $6 coupon on +$50 floating around that you can use. i also priced the Tropiclean shampoo/conditioners and again very affordable. If you frequented Pets Menu, you can come here because prices are similar and some treats are even more affordable at Modern Pet PLUS this store is wayyyyyy more appealing and clean than Pets Menu and the staff is SUPER helpful and friendly. Another bonus is they will keep track of dog food rewards program so you don't have to keep track of receipts yourself...and I heard they are now offering grooming service as well. I'm really happy and appreciate the owner's understanding of having to be competitive with service and prices. I will be coming here instead of Pets Menu from now on. read more

I've been coming here for 3 years and always recommend it but after today's experience I need to reevaluate. I called to see if my 60 pound dog can get a nail cut and was told yes. I came in with her and the kid at the front desk greeted her and said he was the one to cut her nails last time and she was sweet ( didn't realize that was his job, all this time I thought the professional groomer downstairs was the one cutting her nails but that's besides the point). I said yes just cut no grinder she will growl because she's afraid of the sound. Okay no problem I was told. Well someone else took her downstairs and I guess didn't rely the message to the groomer because within 5 mins the groomer is upstairs with her and refusing to grind her nails because she growled... I said yea she will growl I asked for cut only! Now the kid behind the desk said yes just cut no grind she's fine with just cutting... the groomer refuses and hands the leash to the kid behind the desk and tells him to do it who says no you do it and hands the leash back to the groomer all the while I'm standing there. How unprofessional!!! I understand my dog scared you with her growl but as a professional dog groomer you're gonna tell me you've never been growled at?? I took my goldendoodle for a grooming session here for the first time earlier this week. She was pretty matted all over, but she usually gets like that before each grooming session and then gets a short cut. I told the groomer that it would be okay to cut her hair short and she told me it would take about 2 hours. When it came time to pick her up, the cashier went downstairs to check on her and came up a few minutes later saying "Uh she will be up in a minute... I don't want to say anything but I think she nicked her.... Cash or credit?" I was really flustered and worried and wanted to see my pup before I paid. Then another girl (not the groomer) came up and showed be the cut on her shoulder and just said "this can happen when they are matted, we rinsed it with peroxide (no longer recommended) and you can just put neosporin on it at home". I didn't receive an apology from anyone there. They didn't offer a discount, and they even asked if I wanted to sign up for their reward program after... umm no thank you. After we left I noticed other areas of irritation and scabbing, one on her ears, on her belly and her private areas. She's been scooting every time I take her for a walk for the past 5 days now - a sign that she is irritated and uncomfortable. Overall, this was the worst grooming experience she's ever had, and the staff did not apologize once, which was very disheartening. Please go elsewhere that takes more care and consideration for your fluff baby. read more

Horrible experience. Groomer and owner were nasty. The basement grooming set up felt like something out of a creepy movie, my dog was very uneasy and it gave me a bad feeling. The groomer did not seem warm or pet friendly at all and I couldn't leave my pet in her hands. Both the groomer and owner gave me an attitude when I refused to leave my dog there. Me and my dog ran as fast as our legs would carry us out of that basement. I have never been back to that store since. Have had wonderful experiences with the grooming at Petco. At first I thought this was a lovely small business that I would like to support. The prices were high but the products were good so I signed up for a frequent buyer card. My next three visits were terrible--visits two and three were met with indifferent workers who I had to physically locate and ask to take my money (they were in the aisles and ignoring me). The fourth and final visit was the worst--I wanted to purchase approximately $9.00 of cat food but only had ATM card. I was told that the minimum credit card purchase was $10.00. I asked that they make an exception, hoping they would rather be flexible for $1.00 then lose a customer. I was wrong. They refused and I left. Thinking I was being helpful, I emailed the owners to inform them of what I hoped they would see as an incorrect business decision. Wrong. The owner did not apologize for his workers ignoring me and reiterated the store policy of a $10 minimum payment. No flexibility for customer loyalty. We live in the neighborhood and always drive past this store. Today was our first time in this store and we had such a pleasant experience. Our pup just turned one and we wanted to get him a new toy. We walked in twenty minutes before closing, thinking this would be quick trip. The associates were closing up shop, vacuuming and mopping. They were sweet and asked if we needed any help but didn't make us feel rushed at all. It must have been 6pm when the owner, Sean, told his employee to head home and that he will take care of the rest. We also overheard a customer call in about their hours and Sean let him know that he'll wait for the customer and stay open until he came in. At the counter, I noticed CBD oil and mentioned it to my fiance. We have been on the fence about getting this for our pup to help him with his anxiety. Sean was super informative in explaining the products and how it would help our dog. He genuinely wanted to educate us on the different processes and which was more beneficial.
