We stopped in here last week after going to the outlets. It was worth the drive a little further east. The food was fresh and tasty. We had the lobster salad which was very good and the turkey burger. The decor has not been updated but I liked it. It was homey and comfortable, as well as clean. I can't say enough nice things about this place; it has NEVER disappointed me. The wait staff and cooks are beyond friendly, they always remember me and even know where I like to sit! They make a really good veggie burger, they put avocados on it and give a small cup of pico de gallo on the side, best veggie burger I've had out! The fries are perfect; never burnt or undercooked, just perfect, same goes for their bodacious homemade onion rings! And on the topic of sides, the mashed potatoes are great too, especially on a cold day! Even the drink menu is impressive! The lemonade, raspberry iced tea, and Boylen's sodas are all delicious! Now, it may seem difficult to impossible, but ALWAYS try for dessert! (Hey, if worse comes to worse, bring it home!) They get their pies from the amazing Briermere's, so they're definitely quality and fresh, and there's a reason that lemon meringue is such a seller! The chocolate cake is my personal favorite, and of course the almond cream cake! Lemon mascarpone, their seasonal desserts.... Everything is amazing! It's also modesty lit and well-spaced! My only regret is that although my grandparents back in the day lived in the trailer park behind the restaurant, I didn't get to try this awesome place until I was a teen! This recent trip back to NY was all about seafood and sentimentality. It's got to be 35 years since I've eaten at this iconic restaurant on Rt 25 (yes, I was a kid!). Enjoyed their Lobster Bisque, Soft Shell Crab, and Baked Clams. I must return to try the roasted LI Duck. It looked beautiful. The Lemon Meringue pie was a tad disappointing (the filling). Omg - the best lemon merengue pie ever!! You have to see these pies to believe it, but they're the biggest, most beautiful pies you've ever seen. I actually asked if they were real when I saw them for the first time today. Looked like something for show, but they were just actually fresh baked and apparently always looked that way. The way it tasted though was off they charts! :) I'm not a big dessert person at all, but this? Couldn't stop eating and had to finish the whole piece! Met one of the owners, John, and 1 of his waitresses, Tammy, who were both so incredibly friendly. The whole staff there there were so sweet and welcoming, even letting me try a sample of their famous mashed turnips. (Also delicious.) This place has been a famous landmark in the community since 1950, started by John and brother Otto's parents, and now I know why! It's today old school and people rave about this place. It's the only 1950's style diner I've personally ever been to and you can't find another one like this. I'll be back for sure, but just wish they were open year round! They are closed Dec 11 until April. I guess business is so seasonal out there and everybody needs a break! Modern Snack Bar is a North Fork landmark. While the inside has a very outdated diner feeling to it, i kind of feel like that's part of its charm. My Uncle Joe would bring home the lemon meringue pie for almost every holiday for the past 20 years because he knew it was my favorite. This place becomes a factory for pies and mashed turnips around the holidays, it's seriously impressive. On my last visit, my dad got his favorite soft shell crabs with turnips. He always gets the crabs here, because out of all of the places he's ever had them, he says that Modern Snack Bar is the best. I had the stuffed flounder and I have to say that I was impressed. The flounder had almost a charcoal bbq taste to it and the stuffing was spot on. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

I'm not sure if I love it or like it. First off the staff are very friendly, knowledgeable about the menu. Even the owner said hi to Me!! The decor is very like small town diner. Cute. A lot of an older crowd, but they did have a very nice drink menu, shocking. And some nice beers. I didn't have one but maybe next time. Seems like there trying to pull more customers. Now the downfalls. As the other reviews stated, the breadbasket is definitely something to skip. Store bought hamburger rolls, which I only got two anyway and a ton of sea same sticks. Like too many. That makes me nervous because I always think there gonna reuse them. The service was fast, food warm. I got chicken fingers and Fry's. Nothing amazing, wouldn't go there to have again. Just basic deep fried. Pototoe skins to go, looked really nice but nothing special, they were homemade thou I think. Overall this isn't my favorite place, not dying to go back but I would. I drive past everyday. I'll stop again, just not on my top 100. But still I saw other people getting seafood that looked amazing and the desserts looked amazing. read more

We were starving on our way out East and saw this non-descript looking restaurant with a packed parking lot. We walked in and were brought back to the 50's. We asked one of the "locals" what they recommended and ordered the duck--fresh from a local farm and turkey. Both were incredibly fresh and yummy. I had the chocolate cream pie with homemade whipped cream---wow was that great. It turns out this was one my friend's favorite restaurants who has a summer place nearby. There was a reason why the parking lot was packed at lunchtime in late October. Duck was crispy and the Turkey had a great stuffing and gravy. We will be back. Ask the waitress for a taste of the mashed turnips-we did and then had them as a side dish---so so good. Service was fast and the waitresses were very friendly and knowledgeable. read more

This place has been around forever (since the 1950s) and I find the name ironic, but also charming. It is local favorite and serves up comfort food with a diner feel. We ordered a variety of seafood and were pleased- the fried shrimp was delicious, generous portions (7-10 shrimp), breading was light and tasting. Our party also ordered the fried clams and the salmon which were delicious. The salmon serves two portions generously. I found the sides to be a little disappointing sadly. The baked potato was dry (not much improved with sour cream/butter) and could be improved with some additional fixings for flavor. The cole slaw was so so, slaw was finely chopped which could be an area preference since I'm used to larger strips in my coleslaw. I would like have liked more simple staples in the veggie sides selection (broccoli, green beans, mixed veggies). I think sides vary daily since I saw a review for mac and cheese and that was not offered to us, so maybe we didn't win on what was offered that day. However, we also got the mashed turnips which were well loved by the party that ordered them. For dessert, we had the lemon meringue pie and it was delicious! It was the highest, fluffiest meringue I have seen (at least 4-5 inches) and took up 70% of the pie. The lemon filling was light and a good balance of sweet and tangy. We're not familiar with the North Fork and were driving from the cross sound ferry to The Hamptons. We just took a chance on an old fashioned looking diner. Boy were we surprised. This was the second time i every went to the MSB. The first time was 5-10 years ago just for lunch... burger, fries and soda. All were terrible. Today my wife and i being bored with our usual choices decided to give it another shot because so many people do like it. I had the fried chicken. It was very moist, perfectly cooked and the breading had a bit of a sweet flavor that while not overpowering gave it a really different and very good flavor. The mashed potatoes tasted home made and were good. My wife had the stuffed flounder and its presentation looked perfect but unfortunately she found it bland and preferred the stuffed flounder from Hartlin Inn in Sound Beach (see my other review). She enjoyed her sides. Our server was attentive and caring and very accommodating. For dessert i had chocolate cream pie and my wife had lemon meringue. Both of us enjoyed those. Including beverages, tax and tip it came to $60. Very reasonable for a generally good dinner. read more

I believe after coming to this awesome place for 50 years, I can give a fare report. My first time was when I was 6 years old, 1970. My parents, from about 1969 until about 1980 rented a cabin at 'Ben's Cabin' (what is now called 'Woodcliff Park.' On occasion it was considered a big deal to go to the Snack Bar for an early dinner. Every meal is satisfying and filling. Their meatloaf is unusually delicious. I found out today that one of their secrets is they put the meat into a blender. Their fried clams are to die for. The chicken croquets are something that I've been eating since 1970 and still enjoy - w/gravy of course. Dare I say their Pies are as good as Briermere (well, almost). Just a fantastic flash back to a quiter time with great service, a nice old atmosphere and a place I keep returning to after 50 years. read more

I love the Modern Snack Bar. The biggest problem is deciding what to have. My mother was crazy for their soft shell crabs and their Long Island duckling, both of which are still popular menu items. I adore their lobster salad, so that is what I almost always order, even though it's a bit pricey. Usually, I get this as part of a salad platter, but this time around, I opted for a sandwich on rye bread. The chunky, meaty lobster salad was even more delicious than I remembered! My friend (who, shockingly, had never eaten there before) ordered the clam chowder to start, which was thick and full of fat pieces of clam meat. She followed this up with their chicken salad, which was very good, a generous portion. We had no room for dessert. I can't imagine a trip to Long Island without visiting the Modern Snack Bar! read more
