Well my mom and I had a girls day and spent the night at Hyatt so we decided to have lunch here! Well it was amazing I wish my grandma was still around because this would have been her type of restaurant! It was homey, everyone was friendly and the food was delicious. I had the chicken croquettes with mashed potatoes it was great, my mom had fried bay scallops with mashed turnip also amazing! The food and portion size are wonderful. I usually order the Turkey dinner and my friend loves their roast pork or prime rib. I love the mash potatoes and the mashed turnips are the best!!! I have been to the Snack Bar many times since I was young. Walking in, it looks the same as it did when I was a child. It's a very nostalgic place and well taken care of. The food is absolutely delicious and if you don't order a pie to go, you didn't do it right. COVID Precautions: Modern Snack Bar deserves all the credit it can get! They have taken this situation extremely serious. They closed for quite sometime in the height of the illness. Upon reopening, they have set safety guidelines for all customers and workers to follow. No reservations, first come first serve with a limited capacity. Tables with no more than 6 people per party. No outdoor dining. Customers need to check in outside with the host but you can call ahead. Once the table is ready, they host will take your temperature before entering the restaurant. Masks are required for both customers and employees. Inside the restaurant, there are partitions up between tables which I enjoyed for extra privacy. Unfortunately, no bread baskets at this time. Also, the menu is definitely a little different. I was disappointed to find out that sauerbraten isn't on the regular menu anymore. For takeout, you call your order in and park on the side of the building next to the gas station. Once your order is ready, a server will come out to deliver the food to your car. Located in Aquebogue, there's a parking lot on both sides of the restaurant. This is a great place to come after a day at wineries, going to farm stands, or even after visiting the Riverhead aquarium. The prices are great for the East End! I always leave this place feeling satisfied. The service is usually good but sometimes it gets slow. This restaurant is very popular so you could wait for tables at times. The servers are super friendly. The food is the definition of comfort! Again, I'm disappointed sauerbraten isn't on the regular menu anymore. I used to love this dish. The prime rib is a staple here! Always seasoned and cooked to perfection. The mashed turnips are a a great side choice, also the coleslaw is delicious. The clam strips here are some of the best and always cooked perfectly. For soups, both the New England clam chowder and lobster bisque (special) are amazing. During my most recent visit I tried the key lime oysters. They were so good. For dessert, it is ESSENTIAL that you bring home a pie or 2. My all time favorite is the lemon meringue! The meringue looks fake...that's how high they get it. It still tastes like it did years ago. I also like the banana cream pies. If you want dessert to stay and are a huge fan of chocolate, the chocolate layered cake is heavenly! Overall I love The Modern Snack Bar! We were out East visiting vineyards and usually dine at Elbow Room but we occasionally choose MSB for their "good home cookin" which was our choice last Friday. During the Holiday periods around Thanksgiving and Haloween, theres always a line out the door...its usually more a crowd of older couples with their children or grandchildren in tow.,..Friday was quiet and we had no wait...we were welcomed by one of the oldtime waitresses and seated in the front dining room. Remember that your here for comfort food and not fine dining! for appys we ordered "Pork Wings" which were cooked like pork shoulder and were delicious with a bbq sauce coating! After a day of embibing wonderful wines, we were starved so we went for the mains: I got 1/2 broiled crispy duck with mashies and mashed turnips...warmed my heart. Bonnie G. got the most beautiful slab of MR Prime Rib I have seen in a long while. And, on request the waitress made horseradish sauce that was deliciious and made it a taste treat! Just plain wonderful!!! Wed been hearing about this restaurant from all the locals and magazines so we definitely wanted to try it. First, just the setting is a throw back to much milder times. Couldn't wait to get inside.... It was exactly the same as I'm sure it was in the 50's Formica tables and all... perfect. Cathy our waitress recommended the soft shell as its in season. Therefore we all took her advice and opted to get the soft shell crab sandwich and a side of fries. It was the best soft shell crab we've had anywhere on the North Fork... perfectly seasoned and fried. Next we decided to try their famous lemon meringue pie.... I'm not a pie eater but this was fabulous and at an unbelievable price.... $4.25. Can't say enough about the food, wait staff and surroundings just great ... will definitely return often!!!!! read more

Saturday afternoon was my first time visiting MSB. Upon entering, we were greeted and sat in a timely manner. It was slightly busy, but the wait staff was attentive and never stopped smiling and making us feel like we were their only customers. I had their watermelon mojito which was to die for. It wasn't overly minty or too sweet. It was just perfect! For our entreés we had the broiled bay scallops with mashed turnips and mashed potatoes and the crab cakes. Everything came out in a timely fashion and was hot. Our food was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing! My only problem with this place is the smell. It smells like a musty antique shop. I understand it is an old building, but maybe if they took up the carpets it wouldn't be so potent. We will definitely be back when we are in the area!! read more

There's no better way to begin describing this place other than as a, "trip back in time", a slower, gentler, maybe happier time. How many places in North America can you find that specialize in things like "Mashed Turnips" to accompany their amazing Roast Pork Loin? The ambiance immediately transports you back to the 1950s -- real Knotty Pine paneling, glass "pie-towers" sitting on a Formica counter with a few stools, a friendly staff of ladies bustling about behind the counter and in the dining room, colorful period-type signs advertising today's specials and a menu that has strong throwback to the comfort food of days of yore. My visit was on the day before Thanksgiving, as we were there to pick up some of their marvelous pies to serve the next day. There were two lines out the door, one for pies, one for the dining room, and lots of folks finished picking up their pies and then got in line to dine. (The staff told me that over 2000 pies are baked for Thanksgiving, right there in their kitchen.) I saw a plate of roasted Pork Loin with mashed potatoes, gravy and red cabbage delivered to the table next to mine, and I was so tempted that I nearly shifted my order from the 1/4 Long Island Duckling I had already settled on. When our cheery waitress informed me that there were at least 5 vegetable choices (including the Mashed Turnips and Red Cabbage) that I could pair with any entrée', I dived in on the duck. After a basket of white dinner roles and packaged breadsticks was delivered (so very 50s), my plate of golden brown duck arrived, with the portion covering a generous helping of stuffing. Beside it was a pile of smooth and tasty mashed potatoes swimming in brown gravy, and next to this was my dish of tangy red cabbage, the perfect complement. Every bite was a tasty delight. If you're not a big fan of big meat, you could order an amazing vegetable plate of locally grown and freshly prepared delights! Try this place if you want to remember (or see for the first time if you're younger) the way it USED to be...because it STILL IS here at the Modern Snack Bar. Inside is very cozy and has an old school, diner vibe and the food was delicious. We got the baked clams, crab cakes and two cups of soup (New England clam chowder, and lobster bisque), and everything was so fresh. For our main entrees my fiancé got the fried shrimp, which he loved, and I got their "famous lobster salad" on white bread, and I've gotta say it was one of the best lobster salads I've ever had (and I've eaten a lot). They also serve mojitos, so naturally we had to get them and again, one of the best mojitos I've had in a long time. If you're in the area, definitely make the stop; you won't regret it. read more

Clam Chowder was good but nothing to write home about. Had higher expectations for the soft shell crab. It could've been more breaded and flavored. After debating between a couple options around this area we settled for this place because of the yelp review. It looks like an old school diner inside and all the wait staffs were very nice. Bee Knee: 5/5 They use their own honey syrup. It was perfect sweetness & alcohol ratio. I was very tempted to get a second Soft Sell Crab: 4/5 It was one crab for appetizer. I find it a bit on the small side. It's perfectly crispy but a little bit on the oily side Lobster Salad: 4/5 Very Refreshing, juicy lobster meat. Potato salad was average. The whole dish is on the light side. Roast LI Duckling: 2/5 This dish takes lots of searching....for the duck meat... We thought we got a portion of duck rib cage with skin initially but we eventually found the meat hidden under. It was very dry and the stuffing under was very salty. We got the mashed turnips everyone is raving about and I really want to like it but I think there's this bitter after taste that I just cannot get rid of from my tongue. Lemon Meringue: 3/5 I was so excited to try this because it seems like this is their most famous dish. It's my first time trying meringue pie and I do like the marshmallow portion of it but the lemon filling was too sweet and the pie crust was too crumbly for me. No fries came with the sandwiches, which were each around $15.00. We ordered 2 fries at $7.00 each. Each plate maybe had 15 fries. The portions were all so tiny . There was a thin layer of tuna fish on the sandwich and we were all shocked at the portions and just ok flavor. When we were done and got the bill it was 75.00, for a nothing lunch. This place is unique for sure. The outside decor isn't that great, I understand that it's for retro purposes but it's almost too old looking. Inside has a mildew type of smell and a very old feel to it. The rugs and tables are so vintage. Anyways, service wasn't inviting at first. Walked in and was greeted with a woman who turned her back right away and mumbled under her breath. Another girl instead called out shed handle this one and seated us. Food was good. On July 8th, on my way to Puppymill protest, my Hampton Jitney North Fork arrived 20 minutes earlier at Meeting House Deli and I didn't know store wouldn't open until 12pm. I was waiting after 7 minutes walk and it was worth the wait. Waitress and waiter here was very nice and I ordered Vegan Veggie Burger since this is only place that makes vegan burger. Waitress made should my vegan veggie burger wasn't cook on butter oil and this was remarkable restaurant and I really enjoy the burger and I give this super vegan-top-of-world double 5 stars for wonderful burger I ever had. I hope they'll expand the vegan option to attract more customers. I was planning to go to Philip's Waterfront but their Veggie Burger wasn't vegan, so I stayed here waiting for Modern Snack to open. read more

They have one of the best Ruben's ive ever had...this sliced lean corned beef, baby tasting delicious swiss, home made, yes thats right, caraway seeds and all...sauerkraut, toasted perfectly with thousand island dressing...i could have eaten two of them!!! Lobster bisque was perfect, pork loin is delicious, only thing i've had here i wasnt totally crazy about were crab cakes, and if you read my other reviews i'm a crab cake fanatic, so tread lightly! They also use a local brewer and I had a Pumpkin Ale beer which was really awesome, better than Blue Point that's for sure! I'd give the food a 4 Star, overall a 3.5 due to its crammed nature and awkward setup, but if you can put your blinders on, the food is "Spot On". Sauerbraten was nothing more than pot roast with some questionable gravy, the potato dumplings were gummy (not light and fluffy like the should be), but the red cabbage was pretty good. The fried flounder sandwich was just OK, but the onion rings were delicious and piping hot. Tartar sauce was yummy, too. Wish they still had the grasshopper pie we used to eat as kids... Sooo glad they are finally open again!!! We called for takeout. They are also doing limited ( less than 50% capacity) indoor seating. They were very nice taking the order over the phone. We got there, pulled up, called and they brought the order out to the car. A pleasure to deal with! We had lobster bisque that is creamy and delicious &yummy oysters. Ate an early dinner here last Saturday before heading to a jazz show at Jamesport Vineyards. We were a group of 5 and called in advance for availability. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. They table was set and waiting our arrival. We had the peach drink, I think it was a margarita. Either way, it was delicious. We ordered soft shell crabs, 2 orders of the fried chicken, a battered shrimp entree and cesar salad with chicken. Their house bread was nice, also the breadsticks are tasty. The food came out and everything was very yummy. The coleslaw was ok, I like mine to be less chopped up, but nice flavor. The surprising thing was the red cabbage.
