Very solid New American food in Westchester with a cozy ambiance and attentive service. It's great for groups since seating is plentiful and the menu offers a good range of options. Some highlights: 1. Lavender honey-glazed duck breast: Very tender with a sweet yet not cloyingly so glaze and just a hint of lavender essence. The cauliflower puree is a nice complement. It is served over farro but I would have preferred another puree of a sort. 2. Seafood risotto: Very nice take on a classic with shrimp, mussels, calamari, and clams. Only downside is that there weren't any scallops and the seafood portion is very small but the dish was creamy and savory. 3. Ricotta gnocchi: Solid with mushrooms, peas, fava, and asparagus in a pesto. 4. Pork chop: Juicy & thick-cut with a nice sear and served with a balsamic glaze and creamy polenta. Very nice and the portion is generous. 5. Poke: This was just ok - although I did like the Macadamia nuts. It didn't really stand out but wasn't bad. 6. Beignets: I LOVE beignets and these were very solid. Served fresh and hot with a trio of sauces: strawberry, caramel, and chocolate. I would rec. just the chocolate. 7. Banana cake: This is literally a combination of some of my favorite foods in a single dessert: peanuts, bananas, and cream cheese served alongside PB ice cream. Yes it is a heart attach in a plate but the flavors mesh surprisingly well without overpowering each other and the cream cheese frosting on top of the crushed peanut coating is just delightful. I've been torn since pulling out of the parking lot last night as to whether to give Moderne Barn a 3 or 4 star review. It feels almost cruel to give only 3 stars to a restaurant as beautiful as this, with it's soaring, curved ceilings, beautiful glass-blown chandeliers, and its overall warm and inviting atmosphere. If ambiance alone was the only variable I was measuring, Moderne Barn would take home 10 stars. It's that gorgeous inside. In fact, it's so gorgeous and classy inside, that it sets an incredibly high bar for all expectations to follow. Unfortunately, things didn't fully live up to those expectations on a number of accounts. For one, while waiting for our friends to arrive, I decided to forgo their fancy cocktail menu to evaluate them on a classic Rye Manhattan, served up. In a bar as fancy as theirs, with such an incredibly vast selection of bourbons and ryes, there would be no excuse for my drink to be anything but perfect. This is not about me being a purist, this about knowing your craft. And anyone who knows anything about bartending knows you never, ever, ever shake a Manhattan. So sure enough, when I heard the maraca-like sound of my Manhattan being shaken to death, I knew there was going to be trouble ahead. Here's the deal: If you're going to run a classy joint like this that spells "modern" with an "e" on the end, where every detail seems so well thought out, and you're going to charge top dollar for cocktails, then at least make them correctly. Manhattans are always stirred. And no one wants to spoon ice chips out of a drink they requested "up." We then moved from the bar to a comfy booth on the first floor. We were a party of 5. And the girls decided they'd rather plow through a ton of small plates, rather than jump in on big entrees. First, the highlights: An heirloom tomato salad with fresh pesto and burrata was absolutely decadent and delicious. There are few dishes I love more than this one, and their version was executed flawlessly. The fresh tuna tacquitos were also very popular among the girls, who finished them off before I could even get one. And the Korean Pork Ribs were decent as well, though the homemade kimchi managed to steal the show in my opinion. I could have eaten that all night. All of the other appetizers were just average. Dishes like the Crab Summer Rolls, Bourbon Wings, and Pretzel Bites didn't really impress. And a Basil Pesto Flatbread Pizza was fairly pedestrian. By no means was anything bad. I would eat it all again -- except the pretzels, which were a waste of money at $10 -- but none of it inspires me to want to come back. Being quite full at this point, two of our friends opted for Barn Salads for their entrees. A third went for the Lobster Cobb. I don't eat lobster, but I will say they were very generous with the lobster, and it looked like some of the freshest I have seen in some time. My wife and I split the Orecchiette with broccoli rabe, pork sausage, and parmesan. We've all seen this dish before. Everyone and their mother makes it. And that's why it's important to make yours stand out. Unfortunately, this was a fail. The pork sausage was so dry and mealy, whose flavor resembled Greek meze more than Italian sausage. The dish itself, overall, was dry and could have used a little broth to moisten up all of the other ingredients. I did, however, like that they chopped up the broccoli rabe, which didn't overpower the dish like most tend to do. For desert we split the Cast Iron Brownie à la Mode, served with a candle for our friend's birthday. No one cared much for this one either. A little too crunchy and burnt on the edges. The vanilla ice cream on the side, however, was airy and delicious. All in all, I can't fault this place for trying. A lot of money has obviously been invested into the space, and the sheer number of servers and manager-like people running around tending to people suggests they really want their patrons to have a great time dining here. They seem to have all the functioning parts needed to be a premiere destination, but they'll need to tweak some of the smaller details that ultimately set a 5-star restaurant apart from a 3-star one. Had dinner here Saturday night with my husband. We had a 6PM reservation and were seated immediately. The atmosphere and holiday decor were beautiful, service was great and the menu had a lot to offer. We started off with the chicken wings and pretzel bites which were terrific and different from most restaurants we've been to.... My husband ordered the Filet that was cooked just right and I had the shrimp risotto. Everything was great, until I found a small hair in my risotto which I mentioned to the server when they stopped in to check on us. She quickly took my dish back and asked if I wanted another and also advised the manager.... Now everything would have been fine--- I'm not one to complain as I know things happen... However, the manager came to our table and apologized but then added that he didn't know "why" there would be hair in my food considering that the person in the back who was preparing it was bald.... An added rude, last minute remark that was completely unnecessary that I did not bother to argue. Restaurant ended up taking my meal off of our bill and the dessert I had as well. 3 stars for trying to do the right thing while simultaneously putting their foot in their mouth. read more

Moderne Barn is a Keeper! So everyone knows Mary & I are either early or late, but rarely on time. So tonight we were early for dinner with our favorite fellow "foodies", Denise & Adam Lipson. Well, you can tell an great deal about a restaurant by waiting at the bar. This bar was immaculate and beautiful matching the stunning decor. These 2 bartenders made us feel very welcomed, and helped us start a beautiful evening of fun and food with friends. I started off with a Comb Vodka on the rocks with a splash of cranberry and a twist of lime & Mary went for the Hudson Whiskey on the rocks - we love to support local distillers. Still early and having more time on our hands, we enlisted one of our bartenders, Adrienne to supply is with her special concoctions - I was the beneficiary of a knock out proprietary drink call the Bitter Greyhound and Denise shared sips of hear Pear Martini. Adam however, enjoyed a no salt tequila Margarita strong! By this time, the normal love-fest between the Adler's & the Lipson's reached all time high. The wait staff were absolute saints to put up with us , but each of our appetizers were spot on. Mary & I shared the best Caesar salad we've had in quite some time and meanwhile, Adam & Denise enjoyed the Swordfish Tacos. For dinner, Adam ordered the Dayboat Scallops, I reeled in the Swordfish tacos, Denise smartly chose the Barn Salad with Tiger Shrimp and Mary always orders something I would eat and rightly went with the Wildflower Ravoli with ricotta and beet sauce. At the table all shared in a side of broccoli rabe. The food was very good and we'll be back many times. It was a coffee or cappuccino night and one order of Salted Caramel and Peanut Brittle smothered in creamy vanilla ice cream and whipped cream put me down for the count and induced food comas shortly thereafter. Because we cant say good night like most normal folks we hung around the bar and expressed in a stage whisper our regret for not ordering the Spicy Mulled Wine being heated on the bar, and miraculously my newest and best friend Adrienne poured a glass for all of us to share,but Denise and I emptied the glass before Mary and Adam were the wiser. The Moderne Barn is one of my favorite restaurants. As soon as you walk in you notice the beautiful decor. Unusual, tasteful, elegant and cozy all at the same time. The lighting is just right. There is an upstairs and downstairs, I prefer downstairs. The menu choices are great. Last week at our table, we had filet mignon, lamb and duck. Fabulous!! It is a little pricey. The filet doesn't come with anything else and a baked potato is $9! Regardless, totally worth it. Our server was outstanding. Efficient and professional. I would go back here anytime. First time here over the weekend. It was packed. The decor is really nice. For appetizers, we ordered the pumpkin soup which was good but not typical flavors I like and we ordered the popcorn shrimp was delectably served in a tipped over takeout container. It was crispy with a light sweet and sour sauce. For mains, had the swordfish with acorn squash and broccolini and it was good. The other main was The double cut pork chop over polenta with veggies was an excellent dish.A lot of times restaurants will overcook the pork chop because it is so thick and it ends up too dry and this one was cooked perfectly. The waitress asked if we wanted a side for this dish which implied it was needed as we weren't asked for the fish. We ordered the brussel sprouts which were a bit bland. But the dish was so big and had the polenta and veggies so not sure why we were asked to order a side dish. We overheard the table next to us and the same thing occurred. Seemed like upselling. Their dessert menu sounded very delicious and we ordered assorted cannoli and the chocolate babka. The desserts looks pretty but were absolutely disappointing. They presented well but did not taste good. I would come back and skip dessert. read more

Unremarkable. That is the word that I would use to describe the food. At the outset, let me say that the service was very good and the decor and architectural design was really striking. The restaurant interior is reminiscent of Jackson Hole, WY, with the deep wood paneling (don't think dank steakhouse) and high ceilings. But, alas, the food was average at best. I went with 5 friends, so I was able to sample a lot of different stuff. As for appetizers: the grilled octopus was hidden is a spicy mountain of lima beans and the Tuna Taquitos were sad and soggy. As for main courses, we ordered three steaks: the hanger, the filet and the rib eye. The waiter asked which of several sauces we would like with the steaks. As a general rule, the answer to this question should be, "please bring me a steak that does not need sauce." Apparently, such a steak does not exist at Moderne Barn, because all three steaks were over-salted and mediocre -- at best. This is probably a good time to mention the portions. Perhaps I have grown accustomed to the super-sized American portions that pervade most restaurants. Or it could be that Moderne Barn's portions are unusually small. I think that latter is more likely. In any event, one should not finish a steak and glare longingly around the table to see if there is anything else to eat on another diner's plate. The side dishes were also shamefully small. The waiter recommended three sides for six people, and although the sides were priced for two people, they could not have been smaller. Brutal. We also had the wild striped bass (a nondescript hunk of white meat) and the veal milanese (paper thin, overly breaded, and otherwise tasteless). The desserts are not worth the time to write about them. We did not order wine because the markup is shameless, probably around 3 times retail. My advice: go there for a drink at the bar because it's a cool place and a nice scene - but don't eat anything. read more

Moderne Barn was a nice surprise. My wife and I dined with another couple. When arrived early and had some of the their signature cocktails at the bar. I wouldn't normally comment on the cocktails, but their cocktails are both innovative and noteworthy. Our reservation was for 7:00PM. We asked to be seated precisely at 7:00 and our table was ready. The restaurant is immaculately clean. All of the surfaces, fixtures and tableware sparkled. We had a lovely server who was knowledgeable about both the specials as well as the standard dishes. If you want dry tuna or your order messed up this is the place to go. I asked for medium tuna and it came hard like a brick, my friend ordered medium tuna as well and it came raw. So ridiculous. Then after we sent back our plates, they mess up the order and bring back the wrong meals to replace the bad tuna. Had dinner this past Saturday night and the restaurant is beautiful insides. Wait staff is very prompt and professional. However, the food left a lot to be desired. We had the Lump Crab Vietnamese rolls and the Tempura Fried Squash Blossoms. The rolls were as bland as can be and the mango coconut sauce had no flavor whatsoever. The Fried Squash Blossoms had a decent filling but was just boring. For the entrees, we had the grilled swordfish and the coriander peppercorn black tuna. My boyfriend ordered the tuna medium rare and it came out very rare and cold. The swordfish was hot but the whole dish was bland and tasteless. For desert, we had the special strawberry shortcake and petits beignets. The biscuit for the shortcake was stale and the beignets were just tasteless even with the sauces. No one apologized and our special occasion was ruined due to noisy seating and below par food quality. Salad was OK, Fish dish seemed under cooked and coconut Icecream was too sweet. To be exact - 3 1/2 stars. Here is the good news-the food. All 4 of us enjoyed our meals. For starters we shared the fried calamari and pesto pizza. Both were tasty and fresh. For our mains our table had the Chilean sea bass (X 2), filet mignon and a pasta dish. Again, everyone enjoyed and complimented their dishes. For dessert we all shared the baklava and banana cake. Both melt in your mouth. Rating the food we had a 4 1/2 star experience. Here is the not so good news-with the exception of the Sommelier (which I will get to) the overall service was sub-par. This place has a fun, energetic atmosphere and the 4 of us were enjoying a drink at the bar. The host came to us to tell us our table was ready and I responded that we needed another few minutes to enjoy our drinks and conversation. He responded that they would give our table away if we didn't take it at that moment. Really? It was late enough that they weren't going to turn our table again that night and I thought it was a rude move but we did follow his instructions. Our server was....well....a server. He didn't say much and his attention to us was average at best. His big mistake was handing me the WRONG bill at the end of the meal. It was for the table next to us. I'm sorry-no excuse for that. Another bright note. I don't have to often pick a white wine and I was having a hard time with their extensive wine list. I really really want to love this place for a number of reasons: the decor and style is awesome--if I could afford it, I'd love to rent out the entire restaurant for my wedding based on how it looks alone; The menu is awesome to the point where it's tough to decide what you want--modern American, complete with steak a la carte; the wine list is extensive, and the handful of beers on tap are all top notch. It's on the expensive side, but you almost expect it for all that's offered. This was my second visit here, but first for dinner. The first time, when I went for lunch, I was impressed by the burger and the beer selection, so for this visit, i think i let my expectations get the best of me. My fiance and I arrived about 10 minutes earlier than the rest of my party and ordered drinks at the bar that proved to be expensive. Oh well. Once we were seated, we got our menus, bread and water, and then the wait began...and continued....and continued....and continued....and continued.....and continued...and...you get the point. Once the waitress arrived and asked for our drink orders, we asked if we could just order our meal because we were concerned if we let her get away we might never see her again. We put in our orders (I got the root beer braised short rib), and asked for the wine menu. Eventually the wine menu came, we ordered a nice bottle blah blah blah. I'm not gonna beat around the bush...the service on this night was just god awful. They poured wine for only part of the table, dropped every third spoon, didn't bring sugar for the coffee, etc. But, the food IS delicious. My rib was tender and delicious, and the side of mashed potatos with bone marrow and mozzerella cheese was incredible. The only other food i tried on the table was a hanger steak that was surprisingly rich and mashed potatos that were fantastic. My impression is that service here is notoriously subpar, but the food is well above par....so do with that what you will. read more

I would 1000% go back. I had a wonderful experience here without a single complaint. The wait staff was professional and attentive, the ambiance was nice with beautiful high wooden ceilings and good music. The steak was tender and cooked perfectly with nice side dishes. Disappointing outing to MB tonight on many accounts all relating to the food. Service was fine. The special clams oreganata were flavorless and uninspired. My main course was played and brought to the table room temperature and the flavors were bland and the dish clearly "phoned in". Finally, dessert of creme brule was brought in 30 seconds and cold. Considering how affluent this area is, the choice of restaurants is staggeringly poor. We have been coming to Armonk for years and this is definitely the best we have found. Interesting menu, decent cocktails... service was a little slow and I did have to send back overcooked Swordfish (but the replacement - cooked perfectly - arrived very quickly)... We ate 2 nights here and the first night was horrendously noisy in the bar (music was WAAAY too loud) but on the second night it was perfectly acceptable. All in all the food is not fabulous, but for Armonk it's pretty good... we just don't get why there are not more good restaurants in this highly affluent area to give some good healthy competition... We have been to Moderne Barn at least 10 times over the last few years, but the last few times, it has not been good, which prompted me to write this review. First, when we go to this caliber restaurant, we expect the wait staff to know what the specials are and to be able to recite them without reading them and stuttering between words. Second, the sommelier came to the table next to ours, and instead of standing on the other side, he stood with his back to my husband with his suit in my husband's face for at least, 5 mins, never said "excuse me" or anything. Third, when I asked if the monk fish could be made without breading, due to dietary restrictions, the waiter said no, it was already prepared... really??? The beautiful dining room isn't enough to compensate for the areas where they are lacking. We won't be going back any time soon, too many other great places to go in Westchester! read more

Came here Friday night for a very special dinner. The atmosphere is amazing here-barn chic if you will. It's a very romantic restaurant that would be perfect for a celebratory dinner. With that said, prices are steep...you are looking at at least $80 per person with drinks. We had the sautéed shrimp ($15) to start...the sauce was delish but warning- it only comes with three large shrimp. It worked out perfectly because there were three of us so it was easy to share but I expected for $15 there would be at least four shrimp. Then I had the seared day boat scallops ($31). Nice portion size..came with five large scallops with a delish mushroom/spinach/artichoke mixture underneath. Very tasty and the scallops were perfectly cooked. My friend had the seafood risotto which was a big portion and the flavor was awesome. Nice assortment of seafood. The drinks are yummy too!! Had a nice stiff gin and tonic (or two) and finished with a mojito-very fresh and strong. We also had two desserts- the banana cake (not too crazy about it. It was dry and lacking flavor) and the creme brûlée trio (the custard was too cold for me-I have a thing against that because I feel like it was frozen). It was a delish meal that was very special but some little things mentioned above steered me away from giving 5 stars. read more

The flavors were exactly what they should be. Except for the gnocchi. They were hard lumps of potato pasta. Not the light silky ones I've had in Italy or Europe. Upon booking reservations at Moderne Barn, I stumbled past these reviews and was surprised to see the mediocre feedback many customers had to give. My dinner at Moderne Barn was my first and thus far, only visit. Overall, I was extremely pleased. When I walked into Moderne Barn, it was very easy to spot a good handful of managers on the floor. From this point, I expected the service to be top notch and for that, I was in no way disappointed. The waiters are fast, friendly and quite knowledgable about the menu. Thumbs up to the employees! The ambiance was to die for. I was lucky enough (in my opinion) to be seated upstairs right at the edge of the balcony, overlooking the rest of the venue. The decor is beautiful - dark hard wood everywhere, giving the entire space a very woodsy, close-knit-community kind of feel. The lighting hardware above the bar and the circular chandeliers really presented a sophisticated yet fun and energetic feel. I spotted one table that is a considerably taller than the rest, downstairs in the main dining area, that I would love to sit at with a big group during my next visit. That one table gave off a king-of-the-restaurant vibe, which to me looked fun and enchanting. Now onto the food... My boyfriend STRONGLY believes that ALL restaurants should serve some sort of bread to start (he's a carb fanatic), and they passed his test. Slices of toasted white bread, along with raisin-walnut bread are given with butter on a salt rock. To start, we both shared two appetizer specials - the lobster bisque and crab, spinach & artichoke dip (see pictures under reviews). The lobster bisque had perfect flavor and portion size was exactly as I expected. The chunks of lobster we found at the bottom were wonderful - it was like finding the toy in a cereal box! The crab, spinach and artichoke dip, served in a mini iron-cast cauldron with two slices of crostini, was good, but they had charred the top a bit. My boyfriend nor I are with the habit of sending anything back that's tolerable, so we just moved the top portion off and had plenty to eat underneath that tasted wonderful. He also snagged a side Caesar salad that was to his liking (though, in my opinion, kind of hard to mess that up unless you overdress it). As my entrée, I ordered the seafood risotto. This dish was exactly what I had wanted and did not disappoint. The risotto was cooked wonderfully and the seafood within the dish was abundant. Chunks of jumbo shrimp, clams, calamari and mussels (could have had more mussels in it - I think I only found two) were all cooked to perfection. The dish proved to be equally as heavy as risotto usually is, though something about it faired lighter than other risotto dishes I've had, which was much more to my liking. My boyfriend decided, instead of a full entrée, to get the meatball appetizers in conjunction with a side of macaroni and cheese. The meatballs, served with a dollop of ricotta cheese, virtually melted in your mouth before you could even finish chewing. Though it was odd that he was given 3.5 meatballs instead of 4, they were a glorious 3.5 meatballs! Personally, I enjoyed the macaroni and cheese (served in a rectangular, cast-iron cauldron - I love the look and feel of that!), my boyfriend thought the sauce used was a little too runny and not as cheesy as he wished it had been. Though again, it tasted great. We both drank two beers with dinner, so I can't comment on the cocktails here. Though I did order Magner's and was not asked if I'd like it served with ice, but that nit-pickiness might just be the Irish in me. ;) At the end of dinner, we had asked the waitress if we could take a dessert to go and, since they're served in small little ramekins, they don't offer desserts to go. My boyfriend could not pass up the apple crisp, so we ordered that and it was very much to our liking, though he's more of an apple fan than I am. The loss of one star... That came with the TASTE of the food. Though each of my reviews say that I was very pleased, there was some WOW factor in flavor that was missing, that I had originally expected. Overall, the experience was pleasurable and I'd absolutely love to go back. Price-wise, I think my boyfriend and I did it right by only really ordering one entrée and only beer. Had he ordered one of the steak cuts that he was originally looking at and I had I ordered the wine that I was eyeing, our bill would have been much more expensive. However, we had all of that for dinner for only $105. I'd gladly come back to Moderne Barn for another dinner. Perhaps even to sit at the bar area for a few drinks and see what the cocktails are about! But I was very pleased, and will be returning. :) read more

Beautiful interior. Had the burrata toast, octopus and tuna tartare for appetizers. The tuna was the clear frontrunner - so fresh! The pan seared black seabass entree was delicious! 3rd time visiting and unfortunately it was the most disappointing. Service was sub par not the worst I've had. Filet was over cooked and mentioned it. I don't like wasting food and overall it was a pretty bland dish. Wasn't looking for a solution but thought they might take care of a coffee or the $4.50 soda but I guess not. Food runners were constantly bringing us food that wasn't ours. Ordered 2 deserts from the restaurant week menu and asked for 1 for the table and 1 to go. I've been to Moderne Barn on many occasions but never for brunch which we had yesterday, early Sunday afternoon. They were able to accommodate our large party at the last minute (ie the day before). The menu was varied (lunch and breakfast items) and the service, as always, was fantastic. Such a lovely space to spend a weekend morning with all of the light streaming into the dining room. We had three kids with us and they all found something to eat-they don't have an official kid's menu, per say but if you ask they will tell you your options. read more

My Grandmother use to never say "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all". So in this case I am going to not say a whole lot of nothing at all. But let me take a step back first. As stated in another review my intention from the start was only to review places I would recommend. In my eating adventures, unfortunately the reality is that there are more worthy of a non-recommendation. So going forward I will review the good, the bad and the ugly with equal parts of sugar and spice. Now on to the main course. Lets start with the sugar. Modern Barn is a cavernous warmly decorated two level restaurant, with a second level large balcony of sorts. The lighting is spot on with the perfect level of dimming. The fixtures are interesting. The wood vaulted ceiling helps the cavernous space feel cozy and warm. There is a large bar, with multiple TVs and a healthy Friday night scene. Above the bar is a catwalk with an extensive wine collection overseen by attentive sommelier. Among the important realities of a restaurant is that there should be easy and ample parking. Modern Bar has parking spots galore. What does all this have to do with the price of tea in Armonk, everything. Because the only nice things I can really say about Modern Barn have nothing to do with the food. Who was running the kitchen this past Friday night? Who is the executive chef? Are they out to lunch? It seems they are and if so I hope it is at least at a restaurant that serves tasty food. I ask all these questions because how can anyone, especially at a restaurant of this level, send food out of the kitchen that has zero taste. Look I am not being a baby here. Gerber has more taste or at least thats what I remember. Specifically the "flat bread" ie margareita pizza had zero and I mean zero taste. Now that is almost a first in my book. The sauce was thin and bland at best. The mozzarella was fresh but that was about it. The crust was airy and thin which deserves kudos. But for god sake man at least add some salt or something. ****Note: I started this review a few weeks back with the intention of revisiting it at a later date. I am revisiting it now but the problem is that I don't remember the rest of the meal, which speaks for itself. We came here as a large group for a work dinner last night and I'm still stuffed ! The place is upscale without being stuffy. The service was fantastic and attentive. And the food was great! I had the mezze plate appetizer which was delicious! I had never had the red pepper muhammara before and it definitely stood out. It's a perfect appetizer to share. I then had the veggie burger and rosemary fries. The fries were perfect! Thin, crispy, and seasoned with just the right amount of rosemary and salt. I thought the veggie burger was ok. I am not much for smoked flavor and if had it in the aoli that comes with it. The best part of the meal was dessert. We got a few of them for the table and every one of them stood out. We had fresh peach pie which was its own flaky mini pie with peach sorbet. The Meyer lemon cheesecake which was my favorite. And then we also got three flavors of ice cream to try...the peanut butter stood out in the ice creams. It's definitely a nice place to explore with something on the menu for every taste. Appetizers(ricotta tomato basil flat bread, pork dumplings,eggplant feta) were very good octopus was tough from overcooking probably par boiled in afternoon then grilled for dinner. Entrees were good. Desserts were total disappointment Chocolate mousse cake looked and tasted like diner food or from a central kitchen ditto the,strudel and brownie(they were out of vanilla ice cream!) Do not order the white clam pizza! Dough was like floppy cardboard and had no real flavor. Of course I was comparing it to Frank pepe pizzeria in Danbury which is rated best in the country.... but gosh, this was just not worth the paper the menu was printed on. This should NOT be on the menu. The menu would have tasted better than my meal. It's the first time I left more than half my meal unfinished and didnt take a to go bag. Waste of a night out.... very disappointed. I should have stuck to their appetizers which are usually unique and tasty... also, alcohol is over-priced compared to other establishments but that was expected. read more

We came here for dinner this evening at 6:15. My husband and I deliberately chose Modern Barn because of the large space and what we expected ownership to be socially responsible. The restaurant was more crowded than we have ever seen before. I am not a large woman and I had to squeeze to get myself between the tables next to ours when we left before dessert because we were so uncomfortable with the close proximity of the people on either side of us (less than a foot between tables). I understand that the past two years have been hard on business, but we were shocked at the lack of concern for the health of patrons. We are not likely to return. This is my second time at the Moderne Barn. The first time was for dinner, and the second time was for lunch. This review is for the time we went for lunch... We had a large party (15) and thought we booked the upstairs room, but when we got there we were surprised that it was already taken by another large party. There were four(?) servers attached to our table, but somehow they missed taking the kids drink orders, and had to be reminded. They also had to be reminded to refill the wine glasses from the bottles we bought for the table, and bring extra sodas for the kids. The Sunday menu had breakfast and lunch items on it, and both looked appetizing. I thought it was strange that the prices for the appetizers were the same as the main courses (don't restaurants reduce them during lunch?). I ordered the lobster bisque, which was disappointing. It had a copper color, and had the flavor of ginger (? I may be totally off on that, but it didn't taste "normal". I'm a fan of different, but only if "different" works). The "Blackened Salmon Burger" didn't come blackened - it came with zero seasoning on it. The fries had a truffle flavor to them, which was also too bad and kind of off-putting. Those who ordered the lamb had to remind the waitstaff to bring the potatoes, which arrived cold... The burger actually looked good... Overall it was an underwhelming experience. Although we had a lot of servers (they were ready for us) there didn't seem to be any coordination between them. It wouldn't chap my ass as much, but with a party that size they put an automatic 20% tip onto the bill (standard). Sometimes I think if the server knows they are getting a set tip they loose interest when things don't go well, which things didn't that day. Great new place, service was very attentive , the wine list is eclectic some fantastic new world wines and I'm a wine snob. Went with a large group and everyone found multiple apps and entrees they liked many are large enough to share. Chocolate ravioli is a must try so is the black mission gig flat bread. Bland...Bland...and more Bland can best describe yesterday's dinner at Moderne Barn. For starters we shared the Tuna Taquitos. Four (4) tuna wraps with guacamole topping. Fresh and tasteful this was easily the night's highlight. Also ordered - Warm House-Made Pretzel Bites. With an uninspiring cheese fondue and brown mustard we wondered if we were at a ballgame. Very disappointing and confusing. Also somewhat confusing - the "cabbage soup" special. When received looked more like minestrone soup. It also tasted like minestrone soup. When we inquired with the waitress she checked with the kitchen who insisted it was "cabbage soup". For the record - The "MINESTRONE SOUP" was good. As for our main courses please refer to the opening sentence above. The Monkfish "Osso Bucco" was boringly forgetful. While fresh - the dish was strongly lacking in taste and thought. The Shiitake Mushrooms Flatbread Pizza was dry and shallow. Someone is bored in the kitchen.... Seated downstairs the large dining area remains comfortable and attractive. On loud weekends you need to scream to be heard by your party. Thursday's dinner was thankfully a bit quieter. The bar area - with a diverse age group - continues to be electric. However The Barn needs to somehow extend that electricity to its kitchen...and fast. read more
