We recently moved to Modesto and love living here close to Oakdale as we love that little town as well. We decided to try Oakdale farmer's market, nice but few produce stands and small variety to choose from. Mostly stuff for families with children activities, which is a good thing but we are retired seniors. So we checked out Modesto farmer's market the following weekend and viola, this is what we were looking for. Plenty of choices and quite a nice variety. I love love love modesto farmers market. When I go, I search out for fruit that's in season. Some of the best plums I ever had and peaches I found here. Pro tip you have to go early to get figs when they are in season. A few vendors sell them. There are so many delicious pastry options from multiple vendors. Another pro tip is that the bread vendor sells out early because it's that good, so get there early if you want to try some of the great bread. Lots of hot prepared food to indulge in. I love getting breakfast meals, kettlecorn, lemonade, coffee drinks, humus, and pita chips, etc. There are too many wonderful things to try. There is something for everyone. Every year, they may have new vendors and / or returning vendors that have been selling for years. It you haven't been, please go and find your new favorite thing to treat yourself with. read more

If you're looking for something fun and uplifting to do, for sure the farmers market!! It's Open Thursdays and Saturdays, I go Thursdays because I'm a stay at home mama. It is so fun! Uplifting, the fresh produce and tons of small business! The vibe is always positive. Live music, tons of samples and there is even a booth for your fur babies with natural treats. Came here on a January winter weekend to see what kind of selection it has in what is, admittedly, a season with limited produce. It was cold and a bit cloudy, but there was a good selection of vendors. We found winter greens, cruciferous vegetable, squashes, persimmons, nuts, dried fruits and apples. Vendors were welcoming and positive, happily gave explanations when we asked, and prices were what we see in other valley farmers markets. There were a lot of vendors with prepared foods, which we were not interested in, but they were friendly and greeted us. We'll be back next month! read more

Green onions to make any veggie or meal awesome, Honey from local bees, duck eggs from really obviously happy/healthy ducks seriously if you haven't tried duck eggs yet the shell is like a dinosaur plus they are nutritious af. Local nuts and fresh figs and other fruits to help you pewp, picked that AM. The pickle guy does all his own canning, and the produce is so good I buy bagfuls and give them away to people as gifts. Peaches and Nectarines are the fruits of the Gods. I don't eat much of the "ready to eat" noms, but they smell hella good. It's really cool to see the field trips arrive with their chaperones. They love seeing my dog who's super friendly and trained. I wish there was more masking and sanitizer available, but that's just me I actually care about your health. I'm leaving a ton out but the Farmers Market is an experience, and you can't really find that anywhere. It's fairly small, but there are still plenty of samples so it makes a good stroll before lunch when you are hungry Thursday is smaller, there are usually 1-2 fruit and vegetables vendors (the vegetable guy has surprisingly good produce, sweetest cauliflower ever), a cheese guy, baked goods, bolani, hummus heaven, tamales (recommend) and a few prepared food vendor. Farmers market is always fun specially when it's good weather and not too hot outside. Everything is organic and they sell fresh fruit and vegetables along with homemade items like soap treats coffee hummus, mushroom made products. With markets like these we can source local food and eat more healthy. I don't think I've ever had any problems or trouble walking through the farmers market. I definitely give it five stars. If anyone's in town on the days they're holding this market. I would suggest to go look at what they got. Most of the booths are just some Ables or fruit in the bag bring it up to the front for you and tell you how much you owe. I believe the days they're open is Thursday and Saturday probably early in the morning till about 1 or 2 o'clock. Even though it says dogs are not welcome. It looks like people do walk their dogs at the farmers market. It kind of gets annoying if you're someone with allergies. The only thing I would change about the farmers market is I would block off another street and make it bigger and offer more crafts and homemade items on that other side. read more

I happened to stroll by this vibrant and exciting produce market today with my co-worker while leaving the hospital in downtown. We stopped by and to my surprise this is a gem in Modesto (imho)! So much to see, taste and buy when it comes to fruits, vegetables and even food items for lunch! It was around lunch time and we stopped by one of the booths that sold pupusas! We ordered the chicken and pork pupusa and a couple booths down was the agua frescas! We got sandia and jamaica... DDDDDelicious!! It was from the Oaxacan place that also sold molotes (masa balls with chorizo, mozzarella cheese and potato)... It was so good! You'll be blown away by the diversity of food you'll find here. From Salvadoreãn food to Chinese, to organic almond butter, to cherries and beets. It's not just food you'll see here also straw bags, and other unique trinkets. I grew up going to this Farmers' Market and then loading up on books at the library next door. After enjoying many Farmers' Markets in southern California and other places in the West, this is a really solid one for a quiet city like Modesto. It's got variety and liveliness and locals seem to really support it. You have the classic local produce vendors (with lots of variety and organic options), plus fresh meats, cheese, honey, nuts, local olive oil, jewelry and handmade items, plants, a few bakeries (some specializing in traditional breads and pastries, ones with Mexican baked goods). There are some food stands that change (sometimes papusas, Oaxacan with fresh tamales, pad thai, hot dogs, popcorn, shaved ice, coffee shop) where you can grab a hot lunch or drink on the go. There is always live music, everyone has generous samples to try, and there are lots of strollers and people chatting. Open Thursdays and Friday mornings every week from Easter to Thanksgiving (about March/April to November). It's on 16th St between H and I from 8am-1pm both days. Bring cash, though some vendors take credit cards. Easy parking in the library parking lot or on the street if it gets busy. Dogs aren't allowed by the health department. I like this farmers' market. The vendors are generally friendly, willing to give samples, but aren't too pushy. The vegetable and fruit selection is pretty good. On a recent visit I was able to purchase a week and half's worth of veggies and fruits. I like to comparison shop so I probably stopped at least four farmers' stands not including the cheese, salsa, olive oil, bbq grilled cheese sandwich, hot sauce, mushroom tents, etc. Luckily, a local bank was giving out free reusable bags because I ended up buying way more than I anticipated and only brought one bag with me. I think heirloom tomatoes ranged from $2 to $2.50 a pound. Some of the other vegetables and herbs were on par with grocery store prices. Several stands have signs that say they are "Certified Organic" or "We sell what we grow" which is pretty cool. My pet peeve about some farmers markets' stands is that they sell stuff they just import. I might as well go to the grocery store if that's the case. Pretty happy with this market so far. I parked for free at the Modesto library's parking lot which is right next to the row of tents. Awesome! read more

The farmers market never lets me down. I go every Thursday and Saturdays when I can. They have everything from fresh peaches and nectarines to organic tamales. It's nice to walk around and sample from all the vendors, and of course support local business's. Farm to table is important when I'm shopping for my produce and meats and they have it all there. If youre hungry they also have prepared food vendors such as papusa's, bbq, coffee, lemonade and many more. If you haven't gone take some time out of your day and enjoy it! read more

I've lived in Modesto for awhile now and I have just recently discovered the Farmers' Market. It is located on 16th Street between H and I Streets (they block the street so traffic can't go through and run over all of the peeps and the stands; that would not be good). It takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays from 7am-12pm. On Saturdays they even have local live music. Woo hoo! It is a pretty small little market but I really enjoy the small town feel. I love supporting local farmers especially the ones who grow their produce organically. I don't like the idea of all of those nasty pesticides in my body. Ewww. I went again this morning and purchased some yummy raspberries, strawberries, peaches, plums and zucchini. They even have a little booth that sells doggie treats, but dogs are not allowed in the farmers' market so they will have to wait for their treats until you return home. The really cool thing about this market is it runs from May through December. I'm not quite sure how much produce you will be able to purchase in December but I intend to find out when the time comes. So I say, support your local farmers' markets! :) read more

This rating is not for the actual MCFM but for the business aspect of it. I am very disgusted. I intern for a company who was trying to be involved in the MCFM and the person I spoke to was very rude and uninformative. My initial email with this person was just to clarify a few things about getting involved. Every email response was short and uninformative. Then they called me and very scoldingly told me that we were basically not needed and that company's like ours needed to understand what the MCFM was for. She could have simply said "The MCFM is meant for ... , so we thank you for your interest but we can not accept anymore companies." Instead I got "Well I clarified it for you in the email", (the email I received was less than a sentence long). Now, I understand being frustrated because every company in the city wants to be involved and it can get annoying but just as I politely thanked her and told her to have a good day, the MCFM can send out a notice or put on their website a notice about company's who are welcomed at events like the MCFM. It is all about respect. I hope someone at the MCFM reminds all employees, volunteers, and anyone working for them that the way you speak to people is significant when you are a business. When you work for a company, what you say and how you say it effects the company/event, not just that person. I don't run this company and I definitely do not speak for this company but I know I, personally, will not be attending this event and I definitely would oppose to working with the MCFM. read more

It took me several years to find this Farmer's Market, but what a find! When in season, the local fresh fruit, nuts, veges, cheese, eggs, etc... are simply incredibly amazingly delicious and fresh beyond belief. When you find your particular favorites, from the various vendor samples, you will be in gourmet heaven. I have never tasted such an incredible selection in my life, even thought I used to spend my childhood summers on my cousins farm in PA. The foods & prices here make Whole Foods & Trader Joes look like terrible rip-off Gas Station Foodmarts or the Grocery in Lanai, Hawaii (complete with fungus)! This Farmer's Market appears right next to the downtown Modesto Library so you can use their Parking Area for free. The city closes off a one block section of the street and the vendors are there from about 8AM till 1 PM every Thursday and Saturday (more vendors & music) from, I believe, March till December. They all take cash (about $50 will get you two big shopping bags worth) and some accept debit cards. It is hard for me to believe that this has been going on for about 30 years or so! Where have I been hiding? Let me break down some my favorite goodies/stands for you (many are Organic): 1- Veges- Heirloom or Beefsteak tomatos ($1-3/pd- WOW!); Purple/Yellow/or Orange Carrots with tops; Beets with leaves; Purple Long Beans; Yam Leaves; Raw Peanuts; Yams; Basil; Squash; Pumpkins; etc...(Most vendors are local, organic, & fresh, but some sneak-in "supermarket stuff", so beware). 2- Fruits- White Nectarines (sweetest), Yellow Nectarines (sweet/sour), Pluots (sweet), Muscat & other local "wine" Grapes (unbelievable) are all $1.50pd more or less. Apples are not local. 3- Nuts- the fresh flavored nut stand is outstandingly tasty and fresh. They also have great Almond Butter, Sundried Tomatos, & Cherries. 4- Jams- This vendor out of Sonora cans delicious unique jams & pickles all kinds of things (e.g. Okra). One great jam is two types of berries with liquor. 5- Cheese- Another vendor out of Oakdale makes excellent cheeses. The fresh "Cheese Curds" are tasty. 6-Eggs- Fresh farm eggs. It is great to know were your eggs are coming from now-days. 7-Cooked Food- "Filipino/ Hawaiian type" food vendor- great pulled pork sandwiches and my favorite...lumpia shanghai...makes a great lunch with a fresh sliced tomato and fresh fruit for desert. Shop around and look at all the vendors offerings before you buy because even though the prices are great in general, you may always find someone with a more incredible deal, especially near closing time when they start to pack-up. There are some limited generally tasteful arts and crafts, but no-where near the "junk" at any given Flea Market. Since the stuff is local (anywhere from Gilroy to Fresno to Sonora) and seasonal, get it when you can. You may want to bring a cooler or shopping bag on a wheeled luggage cart, with a few pounds of this or that, we are talking really heavy food. Enjoy!!!!!!! read more

I thought that I reviewed this one, but apparently not. Have been a board member of Hamilton, Montana's Farmer's Market for 5 years and was delighted to meet Modesto's market manager. We share the same problems and challenges. Loved how the Modesto market segregates and labels the organic v. non-organic vendors and how they have a deal with the local church to use their rest room facilities. In Montana we have to rent port-o-lets for $750 each per season, which impacts our vendor booth fees. Did enjoy the fresh produce and the friendliness of the vendors as they provided samples of many of their products. Will be returning to visit in mid-November so you can count on us coming by to buy. read more

Go for the FRESH veggies and fruits but don't forget the amazing pupusas. Glad they have reopened. Great variety of vegetables including organic choices. Almond butter, honey and a great bakery as well. My only negative experience recently was that I wanted to purchase a couple bags of whole coffee beans but the little coffee vendor there had a friend stop in while I was trying to ask question and I was totally dismissed. Whatever, I can buy my coffee elsewhere. Still I would recommend the downtown farmers market to anyone looking for fresh fruits or vegetables. I walked out of there spending like $40 but I had a few good deals. $10 for 3 baskets of organic strawberries, $15 I think for 2 large almond butter jars, and a few other items. I try to load up on veggies for the week from here. This morning I picked up pupusas and it was absolutely wonderful. One great thing about living in the San Joaquin Valley is that seemingly every city, town or community has its own farmers market. Modesto's​ is one of the better ones in my opinion. Local fresh produce is available in abundance, as are baked goods and ready to eat food. They kettle corn is awesome, the tamales that are sold their are also tasty, they make some out of cheese and jalapeno strips...they are super moist. The popusas are delicious, I usually get the combo ones with all the fixings. They also have some good fruit and vegetable vendors. The baked goods are also top notch along with the cheese that is sold their. They have a donut vendor and I think it's over priced and kinda wack. I am also not a fan of the Asian vendor that's their. Other than that it's a great place to grab some food and a drink and enjoy the morning walking around listening to their live music. read more

It always drives me crazy when Farmers Markets lose their emphasis on food. Modesto's market still has a pretty good grasp on foodstuffs. I just don't get excited by the prospect of buying soy candles and handmade soaps at an event that, in my opinion, should by dominated by food, glorious food. It goes without saying, but, bring lots of cash. Also, the kettle corn is a must have. Delish. On a bit of a snobby side note, I'm frequently in the bay area and I love seeing central valley vendors at bay area markets. We are lucky to live with easy access to such fantastic produce. Additionally, because I'm a grammar-loving geek, I have to point it out: I'd argue for no apostrophe on "Farmers" as the market is used by and comprised of farmers but not owned by them. In this context, "farmers" is an adjective, not possessive. You may now judge me, and go enjoy your social life. It's small and low-key, making it a good place for the little ones. My favorite stand is the Escalon Lavendar Farm. The linen water is terrific- you can keep it for a long time and the scent stays true. The lavendar scone mix is a treat. The Word of Mouth Bakery stand is one that gets my money every time, but you can find some of there wares at Savemart if you can't wait for the weekend. read more

I happened to pass by this morning and was excited to see the farmers market was open, so I had to stop.... I love this market, it's small , but everything is so great there, it makes up for it. I ordered Salvadoran chorizo and cheese papusas , they were made fresh right in front of me , not greasy , it was really good. A must try if u are there. Also made a stop and got a Asian plate , the plate had a beef skewer , rice, chow mein , and egg roll. I also ordered two shrimp skewers on the side. It was very simple , but really delicious. The Modesto farmers market is a staple in our house! Saturday mornings we like to head out for farm fresh organic foods! While they do have a few vendors w organic foods we wish there were more! It also has become a local hang out w a lot of conventuals foods not fresh fruits and veggies! However compared to most farmers markets in the surrounding areas it's at the top of the list!!! Went on a June mid morning on a Thursday and found a few things to at least say I was buying locally grown produce. Found some decent fruits and veggies, but was disappointed that the organic kale I wanted was all sold out by mid morning at $1.50/bunch. Nothing I thought was a great deal though.
