I have been wanting to try this iconic sandwich place at the foot of Grand Ave for a while and the opportunity presented itself when my family decided to visit me. I planned out a farmers market perusal and a picnic at Lake Merritt. The menu boasted several delicious sandwiches and we chose 2 Veggies (one with added turkey), and the steak. The veggie one looked amazingly vibrant and delicious on Yelp! The owner was very nice and helpful when we were making our decisions on what to get. We were also notified that it would be a little bit of a wait since they made the sandwiches to order. It was a mom and pop type of spot so I had no issues at all. My fam and I just caught up with each other and browsed the shop while we waited. We brought the sandwiches to the lake and enjoyed them under a nice shady spot. They were all delicious- crispy Semifreddi bread and high quality veggies and meat. They were also huge! I could only finish half. Good deal for a $10 sandwich. The tuna was good tuna I was looking for that lemon they said was mixed in , but besides that it was perfectly grilled . The bread was crisp to a T . The Greek salad was very good and huge ! This was my first time at Modigliani. Its a really small sandwich shop next to the movie theater. It's not ideal for big groups and bring-your cash. They have an Excellent pull pork sandwich. The toasted bread held up with all the juicy pork meat. The cured bell peppers really tied it all together and made the sandwich. Such a great sandwich spot to have in the neighborhood. Incredibly friendly service and if your timing is right you may even be offered a sample of something they are whipping up in the kitchen. Tuna melt is classic oldschool and usually a go-to, but can't go wrong with the Meatball, Sausage, or the Cuban, either. Recently tried the steak panini which was incredible too. I went to this cafe since it was one of the few places open for a Monday lunch. I didn't have cash or a debit card on me and the cafe is cash only. When I asked to cancel my order the owner insisted on making it anyway and asked me to come back and pay whenever I had cash. I was moved by his hospitality and got to try a fantastic cubano. He has a free coffee bar set up and chips available for paying customers. The owner is clearly someone who extends that offer to anyone, I hope his business stays open for years to come read more

This place makes truly great panini! Stopped by to pick-up a turkey and a veggie for first time yesterday and OMG! The combos of flavors, condiments and spices is superb. both sandwiches were memorable and so so satisfying (the amount of food is very generous!). The artistry in these panini is truly admirable--like...moist, melty, crusty and balance of flavors just hit perfectly. Loved the pepper jam accent on the turkey and the roasted veg is packed with flavor of fresh veg and cheese, with a beautifully balanced pesto. Also--they know what they're doing with oil/butter etc. It's enhancing the flavors and delivering on the texture of the grilling but somehow NOT GREASY! True test, I had left-overs that made a long drive with us, then popped in fridge and day 2, I kid you not: these panini were still satisfying cold -didn't even reheat! Obviously, best to eat them freshly made and the cafe has really nice counter to hang out and indulge your senses but just sayin'-I seriously loved the final bites the next day! Would definitely try others and also some great sounding salads. As others have pointed out, its nextdoor to the theatre so-great before or after eat, but haha I drove from Berkeley to this place just to get my panini (so many places closed Mondays in Berkeley lol, not this place!) before a long drive. I would definitely return for the tuna melt. The place is small so you sit at bar or little table outside. CASH ONLY! There is an ATM inside but then you need to pay the fee. The owner (I think?) is super friendly and chats with you. They take a lot of pride in their food - even the hot sauce is homemade. It's a cash only spot so that's the only downfall, however these spots are usually the best and it's no exception here.
