I'm writing this review as a token of gratitude, after all of my attempts to pay for my cold brew failed (including the barista's offer to pay him directly using his Venmo account-- $7.00). It was an awkward few moments as I don't know what is going on with these apps, and I wish that I had picked up my debit card a few weeks ago (they don't accept cash, but they accept Cash App-- I didn't know this until all of my attempts to pay failed). My review of the cafe is only about 20% biased because of this kind gesture. I hope this cafe doesn't become overly crowded, as the mellow ambiance and the spaciousness of the place would be the reason why I'd personally return to this cafe. It seems conducive for working, studying, reading, and/or writing. I visited on a Sunday afternoon, and I only hear a low to moderate level of noise in the background. The name of the cafe might be a nod to, and/or a thoughtful commentary of the "Kinfolk" lifestyle magazine. I forget if they have Mormon roots and/or if they are Oregon-based. After seeing the good reviews for this Black-owned business I was really excited to visit the next time I was in Oakland. Pros: The dark roast coffee was really good. It had a slight maple flavor, and I would love another cup. Lol. The beef patty had a really good flavor, and the filling was plentiful. The place has a comfortable feel and nice art. What could be better: The coffee could have been hotter. The wait for the patty was so long I had finished my coffee, and decided to take it to go. The patty stayed in the oven so long that part of it was overcooked, dark brown, and hard. Also, their menu states the beef patty is $12 yet I was charged $14.50, and didn't notice right away because their receipt was emailed to me. Staff were functioning and I wouldn't say unfriendly - just sort of neutral when engaging with customers. I might order for delivery next time I'm staying nearby but probably wouldn't visit again. Parking isn't the best and there were no comfortable seats available when I went. read more

I was in the Uptown Oakland area and needed a caffeine kick. The place I usually go to wasn't selling coffee after a certain time (not sure what's up) so I walked a few blocks to Kinfolx. I love the space! It's welcoming, warm, and inclusive. Definitely a community space. There's so many fliers advertising groups, events, and activities. The interior is very thoughtful. They also have a book club and they offer Caribbean patties. I enjoyed my rose iced oat latte. It wasn't overly sweet but had good flavor. Great place to work. read more

Wow! Such a good experience. I am so happy I finally made it here. Huge location, plenty of varied seating (community tables, small tables, sofas, benches, etc.). We got there for a book club shortly after Kinfolx opened today (Sunday), and we got seats in the back area with the blue sofas. Ordered a matcha latte with lavender. SO GOOD! I got the bacon, egg, and, cheese sandwich on brioche. After my book club, I moved to a different table at the front of the store to get some work done, order another meal/ drink, people-watch. Plenty of outlets available. Picked up a gift-card for a secret Santa exchange later in the week (theme: local small businesses). You can earn points/ rewards, so make sure to sign up. There's plenty of parking around. Ran into a couple of friends who joined me and saw Kev Choice! That's another reason I loved this spot -- so many people, so much community. I loved the setup of this place, seeing all my people in one spot was dope. I love coming to Oakland it just gives down south. The coffee shop had nice sweaters and hoodies. This place truly lives up to its inviting name I felt at home instantly. The work area is fantastic, and the friendly service with a smile makes every visit enjoyable. The ambiance sets the perfect mood for closing deals, whether big or small. I tried the avocado bagel toast; even if it's not on the menu, they figured it out and crafted my signature Americano with vanilla, half and half, and four sugars absolutely delightful! The jalapeño and cheese bagel was simply delicious. Plus, I loved soaking in the sunshine and admiring the art on the walls. This place is worth a trip. I live in SF and needed a place near a meeting I was attending. I was sold that it is black-owned since it was a DEI meeting I was attending. Great vibe. Superb seating. Very energetic. Try it! It's a longish wait for drinks because they are so busy -- but worth it. I went back recently even though I had no particular reason to be in Oakland. Popped in for breakfast snack after going to my union hall around the corner. Was delighted to find so many great things. The ambiance was popping, hello beautiful artwork! The menu had options, hello tasty vegetarian breakfast situations! I chose the veggie patty and my husband had the avocado toast. Neither of us are vegetarians but it slapped none the less. He had a straight black coffee and j had a matcha latte with almond milk and for the first time in my life the matcha wasn't sweetened. Amazing!! I sprinkled a few grains of raw sugar in my drink and that was it. We sat in a lovely velvet couch, had a lovely conversation and enjoyed our time. A great cafe, but can be hard to find seating, especially if you need an outlet. However, people are more than willing to move stuff around so you can charge your things. They've really set up a great atmosphere of camaraderie. Food is okay. I had the jerk empanada and it was delicious but very oily. It's also pretty pricey. Their breakfast sandwich is also delicious! Don't get their matcha. If you love matcha, don't get it here. I've gotten it multiple times and it usually tasted like plain milk :( Their coffees are amazing though! Kinfolx is an amazing cafe and community spot! There's often plenty of parking on the street and there is a parking garage super close for accessibility. BART is about a ten minute drive away and plenty of bus stops nearby too! Really grateful for this space, the events they throw, and the community atmosphere alongside incredible food and drinks. Kinfolx is a pretty popular cafe a block away from 19th St BART station. I came by to catch up with a friend on a Thursday afternoon around 2:30 and I was shocked by how busy it was. Most tables were occupied by people with laptops who were there working, though there were some small groups chatting as well. The space is huge, with plenty of natural lighting and large plants placed throughout the space. I can see why it's a popular place for folks to work. They offer a variety of drinks and food, with the food mostly focusing on sandwiches and sweet/savory pastries. I had lunch already and wasn't hungry, so I opted for a glass of wine instead. They were out of most white wines, including the one I wanted, so I settled for a glass of the sparkling sauvignon blanc for $13. My friend and I were here for a couple hours chatting away as we slowly sipped our drinks and never felt rushed. My only complaint is that there were a lot of flies flying around and I was constantly waving them away from my glass. This may have been because we were sitting close to the door, which is propped open, but it was annoying to deal with. read more

There are plentiful tables in the cafe but not all the spots have a plug so if you need one make sure to check. Service was quick. These are easily the most personable employees I have interacted with at any cafe, restaurant, or fast food place.
