I was planning on going to Kokonuts for an açaí bowl but got there 7:03pm and they close at 7. I did a quick search on Yelp and found Moena sweets had açaí bowls too. I walked a block down and got in line. There were about 3 people in front of me. The lone went quick even there were only 2 people working. The staff was very friendly. The lady behind me said this was her favorite place to get açaí bowls. I got the bowl, went home and it hit the spot. Not too sweet like ice cream but sweet enough that you feel like you had a treat. Moena Sweets is affiliated with the much-loved Moena Cafe in Hawaii Kai. Located in the shopping center, it's an easy place to stop and park if you're out that way. They seem to have a good following and the place was busy, even at 8 o'clock at night. There were lots of groups there enjoying cones and cups. I don't think they make their own ice cream, but they do have a lot of choices and some of those are very unique. I decided on a waffle cone and the staff working the counter let me try a couple of flavors before deciding. I am always going to order something a little different (if I don't order the exact same thing I always order on a menu) - so, I went after the black sesame and horchata. I haven't seen a horchata-flavored ice cream before, but it makes a lot of sense that the result would be creamy with cinnamon undertones. I wasn't disappointed in that or the black sesame. The contrast was very good and I'd order black sesame dessert any day of the week. The cone was large and each scoop was generous without being crazy. My gf is a fan of the old-man trio. What is that, you ask? It is maple walnut, pistachio, and butter pecan. She drinks like an old man too, but that's for another post. Hers wasn't that great. She had a scoop of butter pecan and it wasn't much to holler about. Maybe go after some of the other flavors first. She tried to order, "out of the box" with another nut flavor, but they were out of the mac nut. This place used to be Bubbie's Ice Cream here in the Koko Marina Shopping Center in the heart of Hawaii Kai for a while. Now, it's Moena Sweets. Its pretty cool that there's ice cream continuity here. I was said to hear the news that Bubbie's had closed down, but on a certain trip to Hawaii Kai, I noticed that there's a new ice cream parlor that had re-opened in its place. I was intrigued by this new ice cream store that popped in. During these uncertain times of pandemic 2020, we are asked to use hand santizer and wash your hands before coming into the store and of course, wearing your face mask too. There's a sign on the door to tell you just that posted on the entrance. With that said, the experience here at Moena Sweets was good as it can be. I mean, it's an ice cream shop! Once you step in the door, you are greeted by a friendly face, but be warned about the social distancing protocols they have while you're inside the shop. I probably spent about 20 minutes here, 10 minutes trying to decide on what I wanted to have. They have a good assortment of flavors to choose from, especially with the classic ones you know and love. I usually hit up the chocolate or chocolate infused or inspired ones. Those are my go to flavors, although I enjoy green tea most times. Best bet would be to ask for a sample before committing to purchasing a cup (or pint, in my case). The service here is friendly, as mentioned before, as well as fast and definitely a hidden gem in Hawaii Kai. Come here early enough to secure the freshness of the day before the crowds come. The overall experience here at Moena Sweets was nice and typical, of a ice cream parlor. I did enjoy the décor, although it was interesting. More of a café type of setting, even though it was an ice cream parlor. I guess it's 2020 after all, so best thing to do is update with the times, I guess. For the most part though, it was quite nice to step into a nice upgraded place that used to be Bubbie's. Never though that the ambiance would have been upgraded too. At the end of the day, it's still an ice cream shop and a nice place to stop by if you are in the area. The prices here can be eye opening, but there's good quality here and they offer authentic ice cream here. The taste is good, although you can't go wrong with genuine ice cream at its finest. Every time I dig into something awesome, life's troubles melt away when you're eating and I often love that about ice cream. It's only when you finish, when realty hits back. For me though, I would recommend the chocolate, since its quite decadent, but there's always something to try here. You just might find something else that'll tickle your fancy the next time you are out in Hawaii Kai. As far as parking goes, Koko Marina shopping center boasts a generous helping of parking spaces for ya'll to park in and walk to the ice cream shop. If you are like me, bus routes 1, 1L, 22, and 23 are the typical routes that will get you from town and Waikiki to Hawaii Kai, while making a stop near or at Koko Marina shopping Center. Best bet would be to have a private vehicle or if you are impatient, uber and lyft works too. However you get here, get here. This is a hidden gem for anyone who loves ice cream in Hawaii Kai. You can also do toppings on your ice cream too, but that has an additional charge. They do ice cream / gelato cakes too, but you'd have to inquire within. Feels like Baskin and Robbins, but more awesome! 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 4.0 stars for the service and the ambiance. This place has everything you could want in a food establishment--clean, modern, variety, excellent customer service, delicious! Is it pricey, yes. However, ice cream is an occasional treat, so I don't mind spending a bit more for everything I mentioned. Both the ice creams and gelatos are great and I also love the shakes. So many great flavors to choose from, it was hard to narrow it down. The two young guys were so welcoming and really wanted us to enjoy our ice cream. Finally narrowed it down to three flavors - ordered the Brownie Sundae that comes with two scoops and added an extra scoop of Mud Pie to go along with the Kulolo and Banana Macadamia. Couldn't possibly leave a good review because we weren't even given the opportunity to try anything... my husband and I were outside at 11:59 am (literally one minute before opening) and were told they weren't opened. When we politely asked okay well when do you open? we received no response as if we weren't heard. If you're looking for a good ice cream spot, this is it. They have gelato, ice cream and açaí bowls. Their ice creams are all flavorful, creamy and rich. Their gelatos are all delicious, refreshing and flavorful. I got the chocolate ice cream and the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream in a waffle cone. The ice cream was delicious and rich. This is probably the best ice cream I've had. If you get a waffle cone I do recommend asking for a bowl too because my ice cream starting leaking out of the bottom and the waffle cone started falling apart. The cone was still really good, though. The ice cream is quality! They also let everyone try two samples each. We live in the area & this is our second visit. Supper cute ice cream shop & we were super excited when the shop opened because we both love ice cream. We were dismayed to discover it's just regular ice cream that you can buy in any store, at pretty high prices. At almost $6 for a simple single scoop, you're paying more than at Ben and Jerry's or Baskin-Robbins, even in Waikiki. Since it's the only ice cream shop in Hawaii Kai we decided to give it a second shot. This trip I decided I would try some thing other than a simple single cone. I ordered the waffle cone with two scoops & two toppings. The waffle cone was totally overcooked & should have been trashed. Only the very bottom, in one section, was even edible. The majority of the cone tasted burnt. I asked for Reese's peanut butter (as listed on menu) as a topping & received Reese's Pieces. When I asked about it the girl gave me attitude & said they switched it. Why would you not let the customer know before you put it on their ice cream, definitely not the same. Approved by eight year old who has a passion for yummy sweets, especially green tea. Two thumbs up for him. I love the creamy ice cream texture of the double fudge chocolate. I personally loved the lychee and Lilikoi gelato. Great job on the sweet and tart balance. The farm style interior is beautiful and welcoming. Plenty of space to enjoy it outside by the water. The price is a bit pricey but it pays in producing quality products. I definitely will go back with the kids and try another flight of flavors. read more

I was so sad when Bubbies closed. We loved eating ice cream there. Last week my daughter noticed there seemed to be a new ice cream place and wanted to try it. Same location as the former Bubbies. The decor was different--bright and yet cozy. They had gelato and creative ice cream flavors. Last week I had the guava sorbet which was very refreshing. This week I had their mint chip. This ice cream, wasn't the best.. The customer service was great, but only one sample per customer.. Kind of weird. Anyways, the ice cream was not creamy, and basically a melted milkshake.. And it tasted worse then store bought. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't even homemade.
