Literally took an hour for a self placed order at the kiosk. For a simple fish and chips. Barely any patrons at all in the restaurant so not sure why it took so long. Our friend ordered tempura vegetables and rice and that took an additional hour. Then when the friend went to ask about it, the server was super rude and told us she couldn't find us even though we were sitting out front and she had seen us several times. AND she waited for our friend to approach before asking what vegetables she wanted (35 minutes later) Food was nothing special, dips were over seasoned. The overall wait of 2 hours alone made us have to cancel some visits in our trip. Just don't go here. The best part was sitting on the patio away from this garbage place. I've been to Mohala's several times for fish and chips and every time I leave I swear to myself not to go back. Tonight I gave them another chance and had the worst dining experience. She waited until after I ordered to tell me they were out of chicken tenders, served my husband warm beer that was at the bottom of the tap, gave me regular fries even tho I ordered sweet potato, forgot my veggie sticks and then when they brought them out, the carrots weren't peeled and the celery was rotten. OH MY GOSH, what a hidden gem in Hilo!!! All the fishes they catch are the day of so the quality and freshness is superior! The batter on the fish was perfection! It wasn't greasy at all, but crispy, light and compliments the fish. My mouth is watering at the moment thinking about Mo's fish and chip. Lastly I'm not a pickle connoisseur by any means but I appreciate a dammmm good pickle and my god Mo's pickles were immaculateness! THE CRUNCH and the brine! The portions are not adequate. They give you lots of fried and little fish nuggets. Here you see two scallops and one piece of cod. The scallops are bigger. If you ask for sweet potato fries be prepared pared to pay an extra 5 dollars. The service is slow because they only had one waitress. I told them I was not happy. I would avoid eating here due to the horrible service. I recommend going to Pineapple or Jackie Rays instead since we have always gotten great service and food. The waitress here was unbelievably rude for a number of reasons. One of our main dishes came out and a piece of fish fell onto the table. The waitress did not offer to replace it and was irritated when we asked it be replaced. One of our party had to then wait another 15 minutes for his food even though everything was ordered at the same time. Then our appetizer never showed up so I asked that we please cancel the appetizer and she gave a ton of attitude and said they just started it (after the main dish came out) Once we paid, she checked us out without giving us a break down for the cost then got annoyed when we requested a receipt. My favorite place to get fish and chips on the east side ! The service is always great and the food mmmmmuah chefs kiss! The fish is always crisp yet tender and moist. Last time my sister and I shared a captains platter that came with a variety of seafood and chips. It definitely was enough for the 2 of us. We even had some leftovers! The place itself is open which I really love cause you get the fresh air and you can even people watch a little. If you're interested in fried seafood, this is the perfect place! I got their shrimp and chips. You get 6-8 HUGE fried shrimp, fries, mac salad, and a small pickle. You pick a sauce from a list--I got the spicy cocktail sauce, which was delicious! Very very filling meal. My boyfriend got the calamari, and he said it was some of the best he's had in his life. The food is the real highlight of this restaurant! I took off 1 star because one of the employees is SO unfriendly, and the wait at this place is ridiculous. After ordering our food at the counter, it took roughly 40 minutes for our food to come. The unfriendly employee never said a word. We would ask her politely for more water, and she would just walk away without acknowledging us. We would say thank you politely, and she wouldn't say anything back or acknowledge us. Service was atrocious. The young man was disorganized, inattentive, confused about the menu, and no service skills at all. Had to be reminded to take our drink order. Sat a group of 4 in-between taking our drink order and bringing them but took care of that table for drinks and food before coming back to us. Never refreshed our ice tea, drink slowly it is the last you will get. Brought the food out in stages and totally ignored the cooks bell. Forgot the side dishes, had to be reminded, and the brought the wrong amount. Just terrible service. NO ATMOSPHERE!! Where are the inspectors. The overhead fans are grossly dirty. The tables were sticky. We had to wipe out the plastic glasses for water. One of the ice teas glasses had lip imprints on it. The restaurant itself is like a storefront, limited dirty seating and loud with street noise. The food was good. Small portions so if you are hungry not the place to go. My husband and I stopped here to share a snack for lunch after walking around downtown Hilo and site seeing. I had this place booked mark after doing my research because I know my husband likes to try out different fish and chips places. It's a cute kitschy little spot in downtown. The service was great. We sat at a table in the bar area. We got an order of the Ono fish and chips and a order of the Ahi Lumpia. Our server suggested the Garlic aioli sauce for our fish and chips. As much as I wanted a beer I opted for ice tea because I didn't want to get to bloated and stuffed. Haha. Plus I like it when places brew their own ice tea. Anyways this was the perfect snack and right amount of food for two people to share. They give you five pieces of fish which were a good size and French fries. They were good but I think the batter was missing something. It needed a little something to give it a little more flavor. But the aioli sauce was good. It would have been nice to get two little dipping sauces instead of one. But the Ahi Lumpia was may favorite thing there. It was delicious. I could have ordered a few of those and been happy. So all in all I would go back here. I would just want more dipping sauces. Hopefully they would do that but not charge extra. We had a group of six and tried the fish and chips w the catch of the day and mahi-mahi, the captain's basket, and calamari. All varying degrees of deliciousness. I recommend the captain's basket (split it w two, in our case, we shared it w others at the table as the portions were fairly big). The waitress was super friendly, as was the busboy. However, they were the only staff. She was running tickets, the bar and service. That's a lot for one person, which meant our waters weren't refilled, my nephew never got his beer (but our ticket did), the check took a long minute to get to us. Next time, I'm going for the cod. The calamari are strips. Long and chewy. I only ate one. Left the rest on the plate. Shrimp were big and fried well. Scallops- I took the breading off and just ate the flesh. Fries- tasted the like the grease was old. Left them on the table also. Beers/Ciders on tap- got the 20oz.
