Go here! Very cool farm to table restaurant with a bar and live music. I had the truffle mushroom soup and lobster risotto with Chilean sea bass. The sear was perfect on the fish but the risotto was so rich and delicious I could only eat half. The Augratin potatoes that were a shared side were amazing! (Like Mac and cheese but with potatoes!) The service was just ok. We had one waitress for a table of 15. She did her best but we should have probably been assigned another server. We were waiting for silverware and for everyone's dinner to come out and during the process many meals came out and were waiting so they got cold. But also many things came out cold...my fish was hot and the risotto was lukewarm. The dessert (apple pie) was lukewarm and would have been better if it was piping hot. The truffle fries were a bit under cooked. We also waited 10 minutes to valet park which was a bit annoying. My hub said his food was typical of any other high-end steak house. Overall it was a good experience and I would return. Okay. I have to be fair and give them a good review that they deserve after beating them up on my last review. Had a great meal last night in a private group room with a price fixed menu. Apps were lamb chops, crab cake, or scallops with a marmalade. Main course was an awesome bone in ribeye, salmon with wild rice, or free range chicken. And followed by a dessert molten lava cake a la mode or bourbon vanilla ice cream. The waiters were spot on, and super helpful. And everything was cooked fantastically. I think their A Teams work there on the weekend! :) They were super accommodating to our group, and helped us with our party activities. The rest of the place was crowded but the wait didn't seem too bad. The valet parking is still a mess. but they seem to move everybody through there well. thanks. You should probably make reservations and plan on a loud energetic evening on the weekend. Me and my family went out to eat for one of our relatives birthday and every plate that we ordered was seasoned with only salt! Don't waste your money here. I called a day before to make a reservation and specifically asked about outdoor seating because of COVID concerns. I was guaranteed outdoor seating by the woman I spoke to on the phone. Show up for the reservation and it is a rainy day - since I was guaranteed outdoor seating, I assumed their patio had a roof. My party and I were led to a table in the main dining room, which was crowded with tables that obviously had diners without masks. I questioned the hostess, a petite woman with curly hair and glasses, about the outdoor seating and tried to explain that because of health concerns with COVID, I was not comfortable eating in a main dining room. She got nasty with me immediately, told me they NEVER guarantee outdoor seating (calling customers liars - good move!) and proceeded to sarcastically suggest I go sit outside in the rain and get soaking wet if I wanted to eat outside so badly. When I repeated what I was told when I made the reservation, she said I could leave. Which I did. On my way out, she was talking to the manager in front of the restaurant about how difficult and outrageous I was. He eventually offered to sit my party at a table upstairs without other diners. Too little, too late. If they lie about outdoor seating, who knows what other COVID precautions they lie about? Horrendous service before even getting to the table. We went there for happy hour in August with two friends. The bar area is noisy and crowded, but happy and the prices are a treat. The service couldn't have been better. Our party tried a variety of beers and I had a delicious Bloody Mary. We ordered pizzas right away and ordered two more later. Each was brought to the table by handsome young men who warmly presented it. They had come directly from the outside wood fired oven. If we had chosen to get a table, we could have been seated inside in a room Worthy of Game of Thrones, on a porch or outside, where beautiful stonework and patios overlook a verdant meadow. read more

Someone in the kitchen is trying. Unfortunately, that someone is not cooking steaks. We recently went for dinner, and I noticed the entrees looked to have creative combinations. The evening's special salad was delicious. However, I tend to believe that when a restaurant claims to specialize in something, that's usually what you should order, so I went with the strip steak. I ordered medium-rare, and received something between medium-well and well done. I alerted our server, who told us, "it's just the lighting in here." She assured me it would get more rare as I went along, which was a red flag anyway because if your steak is only at its ordered temperature in a small spot on the middle, your steak is not properly cooked. But there was a bigger issue at play, which was that despite the saying that we "eat with our eyes," I can assure you, the difference between a strip steak that gently coasts to 125-130 after a brief rest and one glancing at 145 in its rearview mirror as it cruises to jerkydom is NOTICEABLE. It's dry and stringy on the tongue; almost chalky. Lighting doesn't factor into it - you could taste it blindfolded. So despite our server's offer to bring us another one "if you want", it was pretty clear that a properly cooked steak wasn't coming out of that kitchen, so the experience became more one of investigative curiosity. I brought it home to take a picture in "good lighting" for the purposes of this review. That all said, our wine was nice, the aforementioned salad was excellent, and the Brussels sprouts were HEAVENLY. In truth, I'd go again - but never for steaks. It doesn't matter how good your meat is* if you don't know how to cook it. (* This may be because we're visiting from the West coast, but I have never heard of Pat LaFrieda meats, so I can't say whether they're overhyped or just not done justice at this restaurant.) read more

We came here for Christmas Dinner. It was VERY very good but very very expensive. There was just 2 of us dining and the bill was $200 with tip. We had calamari and fresh oysters for appetizer very yummy. I had ordered the Chilean Sea Bass for dinner, it was amazing. Absolutely perfectly cooked and 100% fresh. My partner had the 40 day dry aged rib eye --it was perfection. Then for dessert we had there famous lava cake. Amazing dining experience. If money is no object and you enjoy true fine dining with quality food and ingredients then you MUST check out this restaurant. Excellent dining experience. Rustic yet classy interior. My servers have been attentive even while it was busy. Have been here twice and it has been consistently good. Prices about average for a steakhouse. I'm usually impartial to tomahawk steaks but they nailed it. The porter house is way above average. I also tried their pork chop. Wow. Tender. Juicy. Lean. Perfectly brined. Reminded me of the legendary 20oz pork chop at Harley's Irish Pub in Hackensack (if you are fortunate enough to have had the chance to try one before they closed). I'm giving 4 stars for the service and staff. The location is difficult. Even a staff member said to use the neighbors address putting me in the wrong lane. The valet / parking situation was horrible - both coming and going. Where they shined : Food was well prepared and tasty Staff was attendant, Mark especially made sure no glass was empty. Cozy, quaint decor with fresh, seasonal menus We came for a birthday celebration and were not disappointed! Everything from the bread to dessert was on point. The staff was warm and welcoming as if I was invited at a dinner at someone's home (shout-out to our waitress Alex!!!) The oysters were cleaned properly and extremely fresh. The only note I would like to make, I found some inconsistencies with what I got on a plate in a few occasions when Ive been there and ordered the samw dish. Very disappointed in our meals yesterday . Chicken was very dried out and the sides were all over salted. When I mentioned my concerns with the waiter he said that is ecstasy it is the breast. Very hard to have it not happen. Well then the chef should not try to cook it if they don't know how and take it off the menu. Did not get reimbursed for what was sent back. Will not be going back. This review is for the bar/lounge area: Beautiful building, interior decor and wonderful atmosphere. Brick and stone everywhere, fireplace, high cathedral ceiling exposed wood, couches, lounge chairs.... and BEER. Can't ask for much more than that! Came here for a Founders Brewing tap takeover... they were smart to limit the KBS pours to something like 5 ounces, so more people could try it before the keg kicked. They've got 50 some odd quality craft beers on tap in a rectangular bar configuration. The beer selection is fantastic, with some rare beers that you don't often see in other bars in NJ. They do flights so feel free to sample. The bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly. The customers are a sophisticated but chill crowd. There was a band playing on this day, it added to the wonderful atmosphere. My buddy and I sat at the bar and had some food off the bar menu. I had the fish and chips and he had a burger... both were pretty good. Overall, a very nice place to hang. After moving to Sussex County we wanted to find a great place for special nights out. We found it at Mohawk House. We've celebrated countless special occasions. We don't get too many nights out without our kids, but we know that MoHo is the place to go to make that night count. Morgan was our server this evening, and helped to make our night out pretty awesome. We hope to sit in her section every time. She was attentive while also giving us space to enjoy our alone time. I've eaten at the Mohawk House probably about 50-60 times by now because 1) it's one of only 3 really great restaurants in the area and 2) it keeps getting better. When The Mohawk House first opened, it was rough. Service was slow, food was just ok, and the menu was typical of a place that wanted to be something it wasn't. All of this has changed. Now The Mohawk House is the best restaurant in the town of Sparta, with a menu of fresh, seasonal food. One of the best dishes would be the Reserve Pork Chop (please get it medium rare). Another one I'd recommend is the Scallops as they are always cooked perfectly and the accompanying pesto is fantastic. Oh, also, if you don't want a full meal, eat at the bar. The bar in general is a great setting, but if this palce only served the food at the bar, and nothing else, it would still be the best restaurant in town. The Pizzas and the Mohawk Burger are where it's at. All in all, you just can't go wrong. The location is perfect since it's easy on easy off from Rt. 15. And in the summer, they have outdoor seating right next to a huge outdoor kitchen where they're grilling up dry-aged steaks and lobster. The best compliment I can give The Mohawk House is that you wouldn't expect this caliber of a place to be sitting on the bypass off of Rt. 15 in Sparta. read more

Myself and one of my girls who lives in Sparta ("Spah-tah"!) decided to hit up the Mohawk House for some drinks and appetizers. We both started with a Grey Goose dirty martini (made perfectly...thank you, skilled bartender). My friend was on her second martini before I even made a dent in mine. We ordered the tuna tartare tacos, crab cake sliders, and a margherita pizza. I could swear that the ketchup was housemade. It was effin amazing. I ate it with a fork when the fries were finished. Yes, I am gross like that. The brioche rolls that the two crab cake sliders came on were very tough, but the crabcakes themselves were good. The pizza was nice and crispy. Our bill was $75 when all was said and done. Looking back, that seems a little steep. If I wasn't an hour away from home (and if I wasn't driving), then I would have tried the beer sampler. A few other people at the bar ordered it and it looked promising. The glasses were a pretty healthy size too. Ages at the bar ranged from late 20's to late 50's (we were there during the week). The beer selection here is an important part of their menu. Whatever I choose to eat consistently comes out the way I asked for it and has a great flavor. My family and I went here for Easter Lunch/Dinner and I gotta say, this place is F.A.N.C.Y. Well, maybe not like a 5 star hotel fancy. More like "I couldn't afford Aspen so I went to Colorado Springs instead" if you catch my drift. The place is set in this old-timey mountain lodge looking place (hence the Aspen reference) with rooms and rooms of different dining areas. We were seated on the second floor with a nice view of the surrounding forest so it was pretty good for those who enjoy atmosphere while you're dining. It's kinda like Gatsby's Mountain Lodge Retreat when he was hiding from the feds. Now for the food. We ordered their Easter special appetizer which was an assortment of cheeses and meats like prosciutto and capicola. For the entree I ordered the Pecan and Ginger Crusted Salmon which was actually very good! The salmon was cooked perfectly and the pecans brought an interesting twist on the on the overall flavor of it. My only critique is that while there WAS flavor, there wasn't ENOUGH. Y'know? For the cocktails, I ordered the Bourbon Street which was Bourbon, lime, pineapple, and simple syrup. It was very strong yet refreshing which is something I like to find a good balance of. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at the Mohawk House. BUT let it be known, eat here if you're willing to break the bank. The prices are verrrrry hefty. The reasoning is that the food is high-quality and everything is from local farms, which I totally support so I understand as to why it is pretty hefty in terms of the price. read more

The best beer selection in Sussex County, and they claim all of NJ... That's up for debate, but 50 taps with a few rarities thrown is always a great place to go out of your way for. Their food is wonderful, but it is priced accordingly, so bring your wallet, haha. I've been a few times and generally tend to enjoy the specials a bit more than the regular menu, but their personal pizzas are excellent as well. The beer crust is not to be missed! The bar area is more informal, and where I tend to find myself most of the time as the dining room has more of an air of sophistication to it - I prefer a more relaxed atmosphere myself, and all of the same menu is available there as well. read more

Food delivered indifferently and not at the same time by various staff members, so all items "auctioned" at the table. Bread & butter brought after appy, but at least they were warm. Very nice appearance from the outside and inside. The food was good and displayed nicely. The wait staff was very good all around. Here lies the problem.... The bartenders... 2 women I would guess about 35/40... I sat there for about 5 min at an empty bar, maybe 6 to 8 people. I asked a question and just a I don't know and she walked away.. I never did get a drink. That is where you meet and great the customers coming into the restaurant and make the first impression. I will go back and try the bar again. read more

Ordered takeout for 2 pp.. Cheeseburger Med well and a salad with grilled shrimp no onions - get home to discover salad has onions and only 2 shrimp cheeseburger was rare. Called the restaurant and the gentlemen was less than empathetic. Did not even offer to make another burger - I had to strip the burger of its cheese and recook it and add new cheese. So much for take out!! Unfortunately, I hate to write a poor review but this is not the first time we have Had a problem with takeout from here. We decided on the more casual setting of the bar. The food was good but for an elegant restaurant, the staff weren't shy about saying some very private things that were off putting for us while we were dining. It shouldn't be so casual that we are hearing private stories about friends that need to "get their act together". Our waiter/bartender was very friendly. There was a mistake made with our appetizers on the part of the waiter, but it didn't reflect in our check. We literally paid for his mistake. I was fine with eating the wrong item, but to charge me after we both discovered his mistake....also off putting. We got basic food and it didn't disappoint, bacon wrapped scallops...$16 for 3. It was very good but seemed extremely overpriced for the amount. Filet mignon sandwich very good, but stingy on the fries, my husband was very happy with his hamburger and ate everything on his plate, and Brussels sprouts which should have had bacon on it according to the waiter who later discovered he was wrong. He was very kind and offered to switch it out, but we already were deep into our plate and couldn't find bacon. Was very good for lunch. 2 complaints. First service was slow as only one waiter serving entire room. This was day after thanksgiving so maybe short staffed. Second was we both ordered burgers and both we completely under cooked from what we ordered. Fortunately the waiter told cook to remake entirely which is the only way to correct it. Many places recook or microwave which is horrible so it's kinda a complaint and compliment. Revised to 2 stars. Went again today. It was just ok. Wings were awful. Hamburgers just ok. This place has a false sense of esteem--it thinks it's way better than it actually is. Cons: - The prices - are waaaay overpriced for the very average, bland fare they serve. If they cut their prices in half it would approach what the food value is actually worth. - The food - The food here is very bland, average and unimaginative. I don't know anyone that comes here for the food because it's so blah. It's too bad the prices for the food don't reflect what you actually get. I might not have judged the food so harshly if they charged reasonable rates. - The atmosphere - The atmosphere in the dining area is extremely loud. It's almost distractingly loud because sound seems to bounce off of all the walls and floors here and the noise carries over from the bar. - The parking - There is an extremely small parking lot that always fills up quickly. So, if you think you will be able to park in the parking lot during anytime the place is open, you most likely will be out of luck. They have what seems like organized chaos with valets helping you park along the road. Then you have to hoof it back to the restaurant from there. Pros: - They have a fairly good bar scene and drinks. But, I even have to turn this one into a con because the drinks are way overpriced. They think they are a Manhattan bar when in reality they are only a typical restaurant bar in Sussex County. Deal with it. - The service - The service was fine, but not outstanding.
