Imagine going to a Vietnamese takeout and ordering your meal like you're at a Chipotle where you get to create your own bowl and/or banhmi. For the bowl, you select the base of rice, salad, vermicelli noodles and you can order half/half rice and salad, select your protein like beef, chicken or pork, select your veggies and drizzle of dressings. Since it was my first time visiting, I opt to get the dressings on the side so that I can try different dressings. I've ordered the pork banhmi and rice bowl and the beef rice bowl. Out of the three, I liked the beef most because of the more tender sliced meat. The bread was too soft for my liking and I wished it was a bit more like a baguette. I was visiting the area and found this unique Vietnamese eatery. First, you get to choose from sandwiches or rice bowls and then you select the toppings you want including the proteins you want on them. For my meal I chose the banh mi with the beef. I added carrots, cucumbers, fried onions, and cilantro. They have a few sauces you can also add, but decided on the spicy mayo sauce. This reminds me a lot like Chipotle where you select the toppings. The place itself had some seating and a drink refill station. The bread was not made the way I like it a soft and flaky baguette bread but it was edible. My kids had ordered the rice bowl and they said tasted fine but nothing spectacular. I've had Moi before and have enjoyed the food. My most recent experience wasn't that great. The bahn mi I had I wasn't too impressed. When I think of a good bahn mi, I'm thinking of a French bread with a golden crunchy crust. The bread that it was served with was pale. While it was cooked, the bread had the texture of dough. The grilled pork had good flavor but was a bit on the chewier side (a bit over cooked). I did have some concerns on the service. The person making my sandwich used the same pair of gloves. Touching the iPad between making sandwiches, they touched their hair, their hair was not tied all the way and hair hung over the bahn mi as it was being made. read more

I am a sucker for Vietnamese food, particularly grilled pork and vermicelli, so I had to check out Moi for lunch. I was expecting a normal sit-down joint, but Moi is actually a counter-service, 'build your own' model like Chipotle or Chilantro. There were several people in front of me when I arrived, and that led to a longer wait in line than I expected. There is only one person manning the whole shop, so the time in line can drag a bit. The bun / grilled pork bowl was pretty decent, but it fell short of some of the other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. The pork was pretty bland, and the variety of toppings wasn't great (no bean sprouts, for example). The value was just ok, as the bowl was priced similarly to "sit-down / made to order' restaurants. Our last four to go orders have been way different than pre-pandemic quality. I have emailed the business previously just to let them know because we loved eating at Moi and want them to be around for a long time. I've never ask for or expect a discount or anything. I just wanted to give feedback because we have been eating at Moi from day one and it has been a family favorite. The Mini Moi kid bowl is what my kids always pick. Today they asked for shrimp. It was 3.75 extra. Ok, sure, let's do it. With shrimp, the mini Moi it's $11.75 but you only get three tiny shrimp and that's it (see pic). The bbq pork, beef, chicken and tofu are all very tasty and it's great to have veggie options with warm proteins. We enjoy our bowls. My wife is Vietnamese and her main complaint was the banh mi bread. The bread tastes doughy and soft when it is suppose to be more toasted and crispy I thoroughly enjoyed my vermicelli bowl, the pork was super flavorful and I was able to add as many toppings as I wanted. Portions were huge and I left quite satisfied. The egg rolls were kind of cold and stale. I will probably pass on these next time. Going to stick with my go to vermicelli bowl next time. We're talking pick your base (vermicelli noodles, rice, or zucchini noodles), protein (tofu, bbq grills pork, chicken, beef), and vegetable toppings. The portions are HUGE! The pork is still tender and juicy, flavorful but not too powerful. You can tell that you're eating good quality and not thinly chopped up meat that becomes unrecognizable. Vegetables and toppings are fresh, cold and crisp. Fish sauce the right amount - not too sweet not to salty. The owners HAS to be viet! It is a struggle as a Vietnamese American to go on a low carb diet if our grown up pallet is of rice and noodles. The fact that this place offers zucchini noodles is a life saver. The only worry you got now is to portion control yourself . Prior to my date, I tried the vermicelli and it was also great - fresh and springy. If you live or work close by, definitely give it a try. Banh mi is notorious for being so crusty it cuts the top of your mouth, so you know this place don't make banh mi. There were also not butter and pate spread, and when asked to add the "traditional toppings" (an option on the menu, not something we created), they put lettuce on there. Lettuce is NOT a banh mi vegetable. I would not have paid the special price of $6 Tuesday specials if I had known this was the standard. Much less the original price, without the Tuesday special. However, the meats were marinated well and though the bread was small, they did stuff it with lots of meats and vegetables so the special price was kind of worth it if you're looking for a sub. Not banh mi though. The moi special sauce was a light lemongrass sauce which is decent for a rice or noodle bowl. Guess the high ratings here speak more about the bowls than the bread. You start out with the base (bahn mi, jasmine rice zucchini noodles or rice vermicelli noodles. Get some meat or tofu on top then get your toppings and sauce for the top. You can choose two sauces before you're charged. Spicy Sate and Moi Original sauce was where it's at. I liked the flavor. We also ordered the spring rolls. We've have always loved Moi- the food fresh and portions are generous. This weekend we were at a local seminar so we came two days in a row (Friday evening and Saturday afternoon). Here's the rub, the place was dirty. Finger prints and smudges all over the the glass front doors ( first impression ) dirty both days, so not a one off. The floor was dirty, unswept, a dead cricket and food particles on the floor. The serving area where you line up to order and select your toppings was dirty with grime on the counters and splash guard. Follow the instructions on the sign and enjoy. I had the nice, thin zucchini noodles (yum) with grilled pork, spring rolls and all the toppings except jalapenos. I liked it all. The shredded pork looked weirdly fuzzy like a wad of hair, but it tasted good. I also tried the green tea, iced, and it was perfect. I love the concept that you get to design your own vermicelli bowl/sandwich to go. It is set up like Chipotle/Subway where you pick and choose which ingredients go into your bowl or banh mi. I just can't believe I never thought of this idea sooner! My favorite part is that they offer zucchini noodles, which appealed to me because I was conveniently on a low carb diet. I do not know a lot of Asian places that allow you to substitute noodles/rice for zucchini noodles so this is a great idea. I tried the grilled pork and it tasted great with the noodles, along with all the toppings that they offered. Overall I enjoyed the food and that is why I am giving it 5 stars. The only suggestion for the restaurant is that the service could have been a little bit faster as I was watching the guys add the ingredients in very slowly. If it is a "fast food type of service", it needs to be delivered with speed while still maintaining the quality and presentation of the meal. Similar to most build-your-own restaurants, you can start with a sandwich or a rice/noodle bowl and basically customize what gets put in there. I ordered the Banh Mi with pork and added in most of their available toppings. The flavor of the pork and the toppings were really good and tasted fresh. The only real complaint was that the bread was pretty unimpressive and not the crispy, freshly baked french bread that I'm used to with Banh Mi. I can not recommend this place enough. I stopped here for a late lunch on a weekday and there were about 8 diners already and a few who came in while I was there. So, a busy place but not bustling yet! Or, at least till the word gets out about how fantastic this nook is. I got the Banh Mi with tofu. The baguette was so fresh and crunchy that it was almost weightless. The tofu was freshly grilled and the assortment of veggies I got to add on the sandwich was pretty good. The tough part was choosing the sauce and I went with the cashiers recommendation to get the wasabi mayo which paired perfectly with the Banh Mi. I drive to their business after work expecting to pick up my order for me and my family and it turns out they close at 6 . They could have called me to tell me before they closed so I don't make a wasted trip there and can arrange for dinner plans elsewhere but they did not notify me. It is hard to see if you are driving north bound on Dessau. I remember I thought I was lost the first time I came here. The food tastes fresh if you come for lunch. I've only ever had the Vermicelli so I'm not sure about the other options. You pick your base and protein. Then pick the toppings you'd like. There is not a lot of toppings but enough for what I like. You too it off with a side of sauce and there are many options. The restaurant is quaint and has seating outside. My only issue is that the times I've come in the evening the food seems a little dry and the last time I had a few noodles not fully cooked. I was down in the Austin area for 1 week and I think I went to Moi about 3 times. It's basically the Vietnamese version of chipotle. I always order the rice bowl with the grilled beef, extra extra carrots, cucumbers, dry pork, fried shallots , and cilantro! You pay for the base (in my case, the rice) and the protein that you add on. I've also had the chicken, which is good but I think the beef is better! You can add as much sides as you want (like chipotle) and at the end you choose a sauce. My favorite is moi's special and spicy Mayo. The total comes out to about $13-14 but this can be 2 meals. I usually eat it for lunch and dinner. It's a small shop but I highly recommend!!! read more
