This is a very nice Romanian/Moldavian restaurant. While it has a few Russian dishes, it's not a Russian restaurant. The food is excellent, and they have large portions for very reasonable prices. I highly recommend the traditional soups, appetizers, and desserts. The atmosphere is nice, and the service is prompt. The only negative is that the restaurant doesn't serve alcohol, which is a pity given the quality of Moldavian wines. read more

We tried salads Dunarea and Carne de vita, plate de pests (an assortment of smoked fish), limba de vita; hot appetizers jumari, mititei and coltunasi "fat frumos" (dumplings with different filling); soup ciobra de burro and ciobra de vita cu fasole (soup with beans). Very original dessert menu. Everybody loved everything. It was very easy to order by phone (they have menu on line), the place is clean and cosy. Dinner for 6 people costed $125. I think this is going to be my favorite restaurant in the world . Their menu is amazing. I had never tried in my life something as delicious as their house special Mamaliga dish . I could eat it forever . There is more to tel about their salmon salad with red caviar ...simply amazing. And when it came to desert I did not had any place left in me ...but I did it ...their cherry cranes in sour cream ...I could kill someone for another portion ... To bad that it's the only restaurant in New York State ,and it's far from my house ...but once you come here ,you don't want to leave ... Many people wants to come here ,and it's a small location ...and sometimes it's crowded and you have to wait some time for the entry to be coked ... But it worth the expectation ... This place is pretty cool. I used my Groupon to go here for the first time and was actually surprised by the food. I've done many Groupons at different restaurants and most of the time the food is disappointing but I must say this place was really good! It seems authentic, the food also authentic and portion size is decent and the decor makes you feel like your no longer in the city lol. We really enjoyed it and would definitely go back. Food is authentic and tastes just like home. Thankfully they didn't Americanize the menu. It is BYOB. Ambience is done in a traditional old Moldovan style, so for non-moldovans can be interesting. Had dinner there twice and service was great both times, but i can see how your experience can be ruined by poor service. I go there whenever I miss home. read more

I don't know anything about Russian food and this was a shot in the dark for sure, but it was worth it. We ordered delivery: the salmon and noodles, chicken and noodles, beet soup, pork belly, meat dumplings and potato dumplings. Everything was great except the porkbelly which was a little soggy but I think that's from being transported in a sealed container that steamed the crunch out of it. I celebrated my 30th birthday at Moldova this Saturday, and we ended up having a blast. This was a surprise party hosted by my fiancee so I had no clue as to what was going on. The food was great as usual, the service was super attentive and the management nice and accommodating. They went above and beyond with some of our last minute drunk requests :) All in all, I really enjoyed my birthday and all of my 32 guests had a blast too. Wow. Such an incredible restaurant, on dusty, old Coney Island Avenue. I've tried almost 500 restaurants in the city of New York (this was #498 for me), and I have to say that the food was in the top 15 for me, though #1 in Brooklyn. The food (I had the salmon, placinte pancakes, and my wife had the beef and home-cooked potatoes) tasted amazing. The spices had a taste like they came from garden-fresh herbs. The food was not greasy, and the amount of sauce was just right. The decor had some cute Moldova-centric items, but was light, not overwhelming and not at all stuffy. Music was really lively and entertaining. Not a very full restaurant for a Sunday lunch, but the crowd was a mix of couples (both Russian and English speaking) and families (mostly Russian). Definitely a place I will be going back to. It is sad that there are so many restaurants in Brooklyn that are much more expensive, but the quality of which is sub par compared to this place. The food is good,but i am giving 3 starts because when you order a soup you have to ask for sour cream,jalapenos or when you order "ciorba de burta" you have to ask for garlic,sour cream and jalapenos. Moldova restaurant is definitely our place to go. We love the food, the atmosphere and everything about it. There is nothing similar to Moldova Restaurant in Brooklyn. We always call and put in reservations for a larger group(about 12) and are always welcome with our table ready,filled with pre-ordered delicious, fresh food. Dunarea and Nistru are most certainly my favorite salads and I can't live more than a week without my mititei. Mmmm....Just typing makes me crave for this food! I think i'll give them a call! We ordered beef stroganoff and lamb kebob on late Friday afternoon, and waited and waited for the food to come out for 45 minutes with no apologies. It was a hot day and everyone was feeling the heat, but they try to save the air conditioning bill. These people give Moldova culture a bad name. Besides, a small glass of Fanta costs $4. The food was OK. Too rich to the point to upset stomach. Not recommended if you care about coronary artery disease. The meshed potato and baked potato wedges the only thing that was decent. Love this place! Always feel welcome here. Very nice atmosphere. Service is great and the food is to die for. My favorite appetizers are the placinta, all flavors across the board from cheese to cabbage a must try. Another favorite of mine is the ursulet. Polenta with bacon, you dip it in sour cream and its perfection. Mititei are truly amazing. And the dessert. I recommend all of them. But if you must resort to one, please try the sapca lui guguta. The cherries are a perfect combo of tartness with the sweetness of the sourcream cream. And if u must indulge in something else its the stuffed prunes. read more

I was kind of disappointed when we ate here, because it's one of the first Moldovan restaurants - and the only - that serves authentic ROMANIAN-Moldovan cuisines (because most Moldovans ARE not of Russian heritage). I went with a couple of other Moldovans, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that the waitstaff actually speaks Romanian. So, a HUGE point for that. After that, we got really excited and pretty much ordered everything that looked like it came from the home country - mamaliga, placinte, zeama, and antricot. We tried ordering some Moldovan wine, REALLY hoping they would have Cricova, but they're BYOB ... boo. When the food came, it was ... okay. It was really greasy, particularly the cornmeal in the mamaliga, and, honestly, the women of the table all wished they'd stayed home and just cooked everything themselves. The placinte was okay, but it wasn't very fresh (which is understandable, since it's a b*tch to cook and you can't just whip some up as it's ordered). I think this is a great place to go if you're Russian or trying to get an introduction to Moldovan food, because I honestly can't think of another restaurant in Brooklyn - or New York - that even bothers cooking half of the stuff on the menu, and definitely doesn't cook it how it should be, but if you're looking for a place to remind you of the food you might have grown up with, call up your mom and tell her to send you some, because that's as close as you'll get. read more

Had dinner here on a quiet Sunday evening. Everything was great from the start. We were greeted nicely and able to choose whichever table was easiest for us since we had our 5-mos old baby. They were very accommodating and the food was delicious! We got a variety of appetizers (each brought out when they were ready) - a very fresh salad (big enough for the 4 of us to share since we had other apps), a julienne mushrooms (mushroom/cheese casserole, which we now order every time We come back!!) and sausages. Was a lot of food, but glad we came hungry. Then we ordered 2 entrees (lamb shank and grilled trout) to share along with 2 sides (traditional Maldivian dish and potatoes). All were delicious and you could tell that the chefs enjoy cooking and making tasty dishes. Everything came out hot and were good for sharing. We had quite a bit leftover but was so good to have the variety of food. We've been back several times and it's always been delish!! Can't wait to take more family and friends here! read more

This place has pluses and minuses. I'll start with the good part. The representative that took our order was incredibly patient and sweet. She got everything right on.. And the delivery man was very nice as well. It came on time. The food was hot as well. Packaged well too. Unfortunately, I really have nothing good to say about the food itself. I can't remember the last time I encountered food that was so incredibly oily, overcooked and dry. Most of the dishes were dripping with oil. No joke. Dripping! The sausages, meat and liver were extremely overcooked, dry or chewy. The dumplings were falling apart, the corn meal balls were overly mushy, the fried cornmeal balls could have easily been balls of oil. The house potatoes were mostly burnt too. It was our first time eating Romanian food and I have to say that it gave us a very terrible impression altogether. Oil, oil and lots more oil. If it were just one dish, I would have called to have it replaced. But the entire order was simply cooked very badly. I didn't feel that was something that could be corrected. I feel like all of the wonderful reviews which we based our decision on are very biased. I totally understand people trying to take care of their own but let's face it, the food is not good. read more
