We visited El Jefe Pollo Asados (620 Nassau Rd in Webster) after a long day of touristy activities, exhausted, with a group of seven--including picky kids. We had so many restaurant options but chose this place because of the high ratings... and I'm so glad we did. I'll be honest--when we first arrived, I wasn't impressed with the outside or the area. I was a little hesitant going in. But the moment we walked through the doors, everything changed. The place felt welcoming, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere--yes, a little loud--but in a good way. It's that lively Mexican vibe: music, micheladas, carne asada... all of it. We were just tired, so I think I noticed it more. Now let's talk about the food... I ordered the Maestro Plate but swapped the meat for short rib costillas--and OH. MY. GOSH. These were hands down some of the best costillas I've ever had. Juicy, tender, packed with flavor. I cleaned those bones completely--every single bite. The dish was served with perfectly grilled "nopales" and queso panela, que ricura! Ahhh, and of course the charro beans and rice that I barely made a dent in. The portions? HUGE. Two of us shared one plate and still had leftovers--and we can eat! Now this part says everything: my grandson, who is on the spectrum and very picky, ordered pollo asado... and he tore into it. No complaints, no hesitation--he finished his entire plate. That alone speaks volumes. My daughter had the birria (and she's a birria critic), and even she couldn't finish her plate because of how generous the portion was--but she said it was full of flavor and really good. My older grandson (big growing boy with an equally big appetite) had a birria quesadilla--again, huge portion--and even he couldn't finish it, which never happens. To top it all off, the owner surprised us with a complimentary dessert--warm, soft, pillowy sopapillas with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. The kids were FULL... and still devoured every last bite. Not a crumb left. And let's talk about pricing... honey. Compared to Austin? This was a steal. I was honestly shocked at how affordable it was for the quality and portion sizes. Amazing food, generous portions, great service, and a place that turned my hesitation into loyalty. We are in town for two weeks and it looks like we're trying a different cuisine every day. Today it was Mexican. El Jefe was close and was highly rated on Yelp making it a no-brainer option. We arrived shortly after they opened at 11. The place, which is pretty small, was already hopping. The place had a chill vibe. The music, which was played at a perfect volume, matched the cuisine. There were two guys running the place (not counting whoever might have been cooking in the back). Both guys were busy, but took care of everyone as if we were all family. Chips were delivered with a red and a green salsa. The chips were fresh. The salsa were very chunky (big pieces of tomato in the red and peppers in the green) and it was clear they were made in house. I found the red extraordinary. The green was a bit too spicy for my taste. Oddly enough, Mark didn't think the green salsa was hot at all. I think he may have temporarily lost his taste buds. El Jefe offers several different dishes with Birria. I knew I wanted Birria and opted for the soft tacos - four tacos with chopped white onion and cilantro on the side, a dipping sauce and a tiny cup of red sauce. I had the option of beef or goat. I opted for the beef, which was delicious, but I should have tried the goat. I get Birria often in Cincinnati and goat isn't an option. Anyway, I lightly dripped the red (hot) sauce onto the meat, added onion and cilantro. I spooned some of the dipping broth onto the taco as well as dipping as I went. They were fantastic. They were also very messy, but the folks working there knew this in advance and dropped off extra napkins before I even started eating. These guys know their food and their customers. There was a menu inside the menu with 'specials'. Mark ordered from this menu and had chicken enchiladas. He said his was meal outstanding. I'm not sure my sister and brother-in-law who live in League City (we are here house/dog/cat sitting) have been to El Jefe, but we will make sure they know they need to try it. And if we here, El Jefe would be our go-to for Mexican food. read more

The bartender was super friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and they make you feel like you're genuinely welcome. The homemade salsa deserves its own shoutout... it's fresh, flavorful, and just the right amount of spice in it. I tried the "new Mexican place" in Webster this mid afternoon. It was not busy at all as it was 2:30 pm. In no time at all I was greeted , told I could sit anywhere and was asked for my drink order. My waiter was very polite and friendly. In less than three minutes I had chips and salsa and my drink. What impressed me was the customer service during the meal. The workers would constantly look at the table to see if there was anything I needed. Now to the food! I went with a favorite . Good old street tacos. Less than 5 minutes after I ordered my food appeared . I asked the waiter if they could do some bistek and some trompo meat and he was totally good with it. No questions asked. My meal came warm, well plated and was great tasting. The bistek was juicy and well seasoned (not overpowering at all). Personally, I like to dress it up with onions and cilantro and green salsa it was delicious. The trompo was great tasting as well. The beans were really good too. They were warm, full of ingredients and quite a bit of meat in it. The batch I got was a little on the hotter side but I don't mind that once so ever. Chips and salsa were decent. The green salsa was my favorite as it had more kick, plenty of onions and just good flavor. The restaurant looks small from the outside but the restaurant seemed to be well decorated and had plenty of seating. Yes, they do have bar seating. The bar did have about 3-4 beers on tap. All in all I was pleased with my lunch. I will definitely go back to try some other Mexican food. Great start El Jefe! You just might be el jefe de jefes! I personally did not like the salsa or the main entrees here. The salsa was really watery and didn't have any flavor. It was like the water from a tomato. The only thing I liked was a green sauce they served along with the chips, which was spicy. The chips themselves were pretty oily, and when talking about the entrees, the rice and beans were fine, but the rest of the items were a no go for me. The green sauce is what helped to make the meal better, but without it, the enchilada, taco, and the tostada were really really dry and bland. The quesadilla was decent and had nice melty cheese inside, and the meat was pretty good, but again, it was really oily. Overall, I've just had better food. The service was good like our waitress was really nice, but I wouldn't come back again. The ambiance definitely felt like a local spot, and it was really small inside. The parking lot is just gravel, so there's not an actual lot for parking. Wouldn't come here again, but it was quite busy inside after we got there and finished our meal. read more

I really wanted to give this place a 4.5 but I can't select half a star. First time trying out this place and I'm impressed and would eat here again. Pretty big gravel parking lot in the back but small establishment inside. Not a problem because who does like intimate sitting sometimes. The place looks clean and smell like delicious food when you walk in. You are given a menu but if you want to see today's specials then you have to scan the QR code on the table. There are several specials like maybe 10-12 and great prices at that. So I abandoned my original choice for a today's specials. Combination #1 is what I chose and it consisted if a ground beef taco, ground beef chapulita, and a cheese enchilada. You did get a choice of beef or chicken and you can ask for beef fajita style. My friend and I both enjoyed our meal. I'm going to give hands down to the charro bean because baby that hit the spot! Ok and the chips that they give you once you are seated is one of the perfect chips. Clearly it is fried but its a nice sturdy thick chip and almost taste like it's baked. But that green sauce they serve with it.....delicious. Now I think the Mexican rice could be better but it wasn't bad. It's a hidden gem out in the Webster area. Took my daughter here for a daddy daughter dinner and wanted to try somewhere new. It was a Wednesday night and surprisingly slow, we were the only customers in the restaurant. The waiter offered queso with our chips, which we accepted, but I was a bit shocked when the small bowl of cheese came out at almost \$9. On the plus side, the drinks were large and a good value. My daughter's tacos looked great, and she seemed to enjoy them. Unfortunately, my main dish, the stuffed jalapeños, came out room temperature at best, maybe even cold, which was really disappointing. We love authentic Mexican, which is seasoned well and full of flavor, as opposed to the Tex-Mex we have experienced (cheap quality and cheesy). This place was excellent!! This review is a mixed bag. And, in full disclosure, it is based on a single visit with friends. First, the atmosphere here is clean, fun and roomy. Our server was as polite as he could be. But I felt like I was dealing with my kid back in the day -- in that I had to ask multiple times for certain things, and then they half-assed it. The folks in the kitchen certainly didn't half-ass anything, as everything was delicious. I'm a salsa snob, and this salsa is good (not great). It is served cold, which is a must in my book. But it was also quite mild. Quite often, I ask for something from the kitchen (picosa) to spice it up. I also ask for my own bowl of the red stuff so as to not subject them to my desire for heat. The server, despite multiple requests, never obliged me. The green salsa here is nicely tart with the perfect amount of salt. This might be one of my top five green salsas of all time. The Birria Tacos were special in every way. One of the things about this dish as that all the fat/grease remains in the dish. It's as high calorie as you can get, and most of the time, you'd better be close to home when you indulge. But not these. The flavor and consistency were phenomenal -- without the requisite grease. Kudos! Other than the salsa screw-up, my other reason for not awarding another star had to do with my wife's order for water. I typically order a cold beer at Mexican joints. She usually orders water. At every other restaurant that we've patronized (and we've eaten at plenty of places), she has been served a glass of ice water -- no charge. But at El Jefe, the server brought her a glass of ice and a bottled water for which we were charged. That's chincy and sneaky. It was only a few bucks, but still ... not cool. Want good food in a clean atmosphere? This is your place. But I cannot fully recommend a restaurant that seems to purposely ignore multiple requests for additional salsa, and brings out bottled water instead of something from the tap. In my opinion, someone is penny-pinching -- unlike most of their restaurant counterparts. Because of that, I'll patronize their counterparts in the future. read more

Words cannot describe how well the expectations were met for this place, honestly as soon as you see the chicken out front you can tell "Oh yeah, this is authentic." I will try my best to describe how good the food was though. I got off a flight exhausted on 5 hours of sleep, hungry and thirsty and when I took the first bite of the chimichanga, I was blown away. I thought I was hallucinating after passing out from hunger and seeing God himself bring me food from the heavens. The cheese on the side paired with the rice is phenomenal. El Jefe is a small Mexican restaurant. Tidy, but not ideal for large parties. The staff are nice, but not very organized. Our server didn't tell us until 20 minutes later that they were out of queso! She and the manager kept asking what our orders were over and over again! So annoying! They weren't even busy. They have TV, but it's all in Spanish. Their "air conditioning" is just fans scattered around the restaurant. Most of the tables don't have fans. We can't have that in Texas Summer heat! The prices are decent and the food was excellent. Came here last Friday night with fiancé and our friends , 3 of us got quesabirria which was delicious, we also got a large queso it was def LARGE like the biggest large queso I've ever gotten from a restaurant but it wasn't that great I'm not sure what was wrong about it but it wasn't as good as other places it almost seemed like velveeta. My fiancé got the street tacos and he thought them and the beans were sooo good so much so he got another order to go, and today is Monday .. 3 days later he just ordered el jefe again for dinner and tonight we both got the chicken street tacos and beans , they were delicious even as Togo! My wife and I have been here twice now, and the food is excellent. On our first visit we had the quesabirria tacos with goat and the El Trompito pork skewer. The goat and pork were tender and flavorful. On a follow up visit we shared the Happy Plate, which was likewise quite good. Service was good, though communicating in English was challenging given the noisy environment. The main negative aspect of this place to us is the noise. Particularly on our first visit, not only was there loud music playing, but we were seated directly below a television which added another layer of noise, so conversation was difficult. Late in the meal I managed to get the TV audio turned off, which helped a lot. Due to the noise level, we ordered takeout at our next visit.
