"I was drunk, the day my mom, got out of prison"…read more Now ladies and gentleman before you jump to any conclusions, I was most certainly not drunk the day my mom got out of prison. The reason I begin my review that way (as if you don't already know) is that my rendition of David Allen Coe's You Never Even Called Me by My Name was lauded as the single greatest performance in Bayou Bar history. Ok, that's not really true, but where would we be without gross exaggeration in Yelp reviews? Anyway........ Bayou Bar is a great example of the southern small town dive bar. I have been to many different versions of this category of bar and they all have a few things in common. Here they are: Smoking Encouraged: This is one thing I can't get behind. I fucking love Merica as much as the next dude, but smoking is for fucking commies. Plus it stinks, makes my clothes smell bad, and irritates the heck out of me. One plus to the smoke filled atmosphere is that it burns the eyes of the other patrons leading me to believe my singing brought them to tears. Hashtag Ego Boost! Regulars: Every dive bar has their regulars. These are the guys (always dudes) who are always there and immediately recognize you as an outsider. Most of the time they are friendly, but will occasionally stare judgingly at you and your cargo shorts. Don't hate me because I am in touch with men's fashion. Cash Only: I don't know what this is about, but it is what it is. You won't need much cash, but you will need some. Pool: Every dive bar on the planet earth has pool. BB is no different. They have two, maybe three tables, but you won't catch me playing. I got in all my pool playing when I was 16 and sneaking into Honey's on the WB. But if pool is your thing, you got it here. So now that I've mentioned the things BB has that every other dive bar has, I need to mention what is different. Karaoke! They may not of had any Juvie, BG, or Migos, but they did have a pretty wide ranging group of songs to sing. Singing is fun and all, but watching others sing is epic. If the other things turned you off, this is why you should go. Trust me on this. So how the hell did this city slicker end up in Gonzales, Louisiana at a country dive bar? Thanks Yelp. Had it not been for my good buddy Joel, I would've never experienced this place. Too-da-loo Bayou Bar.

Yes there are confederate flags and yes the people are nice, except for looking at us like we were aliens. There are 2 pool tables which were recently refurbished when we went last Saturday night. The karaoke lady is definitely there most Saturdays and she has a wide variety of songs...our bartender was belting out some classic Pat Benatar and the old country songs definitely allows for the venting of feelings by some good old boys. Drinks are straight pours and beers, cash only. As always my biggest problem with this spot is the cigarette smoke. I'm so spoiled by the no smoking bars in NOLA that I forget when I'm out elsewhere. With three of us in my car and driving back to the city, it took me a day or two to get the smoke smell out of my car. Blech.

My wife and I decided to grab lunch in historic Mandeville today, and rolled by this bar on our way home so we decided to stop in for a quick drink. And we're glad we did. Let me start off by saying that California has a "dive bar" culture. Despite what most people see on TV about the glamorous night life in Los Angeles, that's not 99% of SoCal. And to be perfectly honest, I think it's kind of funny how bougie the north shore pretends to be. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of nice and seemingly upscale establishments to visit around here so I'm not trying to offend anyone. But sometimes you just want to grab a drink in a place that's not full of pretentious people who are trying too hard. We all live in a glorified swamp, people. Accept it. Very simply: a good pour, good music, friendly patrons, and good service. That's really all that matters. And the best part is that this place doesn't have the weird hours that a lot of the places around here do. Seriously, who's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays? Do better, North Shore. Jokes aside, this is a cool, chill little bar in a great part of town.

Unfortunately, our experience was very mixed. I ordered the Shrimp Caesar Wrap, which was excellent -- fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I hoped for. I did need to substitute a salad for fries because the oil was being filtered around 8:00 p.m., but the salad was perfectly fine. The service, however, was disappointing. We were the only customers in the restaurant at the time, yet we were not provided silverware and had to request it, along with every drink refill. My husband ordered the cracker crust pizza, which unfortunately arrived very overcooked. The bottom of the crust was burnt, the pizza had little flavor, and the cup pepperoni was extremely crisp -- almost hard. He was unable to enjoy it. Because we made a special trip from Prairieville to this location, this was especially frustrating

On two occasions we walked to the bar and ordered water for the table and a second time we ordered wine. We ordered the thin crust classic. It would have been good if it would have been warm. It was cold. I don't want to pile on but the place was dirty. There was no one in the place but the staff was not interested in the three tables that were seated. I hate this review but it is what it is.
