My friends and I have tried and tried to like this place, but we finally decided we won't let them ruin our lunches any longer. The food is kind of bland and overpriced and just isn't worth not knowing if you'll get decent service or not. Today I ordered guacamole & a cup of corn to go-45 minutes later, it's still not ready and we were given someone else's order. Really?? So much for having any time to eat my lunch. I can't tell you how many people ordered after myself and my guest and received their food before us. There was zero customer service- guess the owner wasn't around? The food is just okay, but I appreciate the creative menu and that things are freshly made. I've also tried to support since it's a small business, but I guess I'll just move on and let all the 5 star reviewers have this one! If I want to wait an hour for guac, I'll just make it myself (and it'll taste better)! read more

I'm disappointed to have to write a poor review about Momcorn, because I do enjoy the food (especially the elotes). Since our first delivery order, I have gotten takeout 3 times. Each time I have received pretty good food but very poor service that I've tried to overlook. When the SAME employee is responsible for terrible service one time, I overlook it. (Everyone has bad days.) When it happens a second time, I think "wow I hope this doesn't happen again". But a THIRD time, that happened to be the worst one yet? Unfortunately that probably makes for my last visit. Momcorn was busier than usual on Sunday evening when I came to pickup, so I had no problem waiting when a young female server (wearing a green Momcorn shirt) said she'd be right with me. She was very nice and seemed to be working her butt off serving every single table in the place. Meanwhile, the other employee that has been unfriendly in the past (a young, short girl wearing a black polo and speaking Spanish to her friends that were visiting) was standing behind the counter, not helping anyone. She was just chatting with the group of girls who came to visit. After several minutes, I finally placed an order. I sat and waited a half hour for my order, which I understand can happen when things are busy. But the biggest frustration of the visit came at the end. I noticed a few takeout containers sitting on the counter that needed to be packed up. It looked to me like exactly the amount of packages that would be a part of MY order, so I kept an eye on it to see if anything changed. I watched that food for almost 10 minutes, no additions made, before the girl finally packed up my food. (She was not busy with anything else during this time.) So here is my question - why did my food sit around getting cold for an extra 5-10 minutes for no reason? When she finally packed up the food and checked each item (which I always do appreciate) she spent so much time yawning and talking to the cooks that even more time went by before I finally got to leave with my food. I do enjoy the food from Momcorn, specifically the elotes, but I do not think I will be returning. It is not worth the poor service when I can get authentic Mexican food cheaper and closer to home. I have seen several other reviews referencing the same employee - I wish improvements would be made so that customers do not feel the need to go elsewhere. read more

Small portions, high prices, and average tacos. I didn't get napkins with my carryout. I give them an extra star because the cashier was very friendly, but other than that, I was pretty unimpressed. I've eaten from here a few times, and had similar experiences. Personally, I think Tacos El Durango is much better, both in terms of value and taco quality. read more

There is some home-cooking going on here!! Cozy Latin American feel to the restaurant. Folks here are friendly and you get the feeling that there's real love in the food. I stopped here with a friend after work to get a fast bite. It's a small place but they do seat you if you come in the evening. We ordered the four flauta platter with chorizo and potato for two and peas/potato for the other two. Whoa Nelly!! These are delicious. Crunchy, topped with avocado, lettuce and sour cream, the flautas look small but are quite filling and a meal unto themselves. We also ordered a ground beef/boiled egg empanada. The egg is a nice touch and it was nicely spiced, but if I had to choose one deep fried food over the other I'd go with the flautas. Lastly we ordered the smothered enchiladas with the hot red sauce. Beware! This sauce is HOT. Got a side of sour cream to cut the heat. The chicken inside is moist and they added cheese inside and cheese on top. So cheesy I'll definitely be back. read more

Vegan Mexican! I really enjoyed this little spot! They actually had a separate menu for there vegan options, and the waitress was very helpful in letting me know that the cheese and sour cream was also so vegan on the menu, so I had nothing to worry about. The place is very small, and once it's buys it can get tight, but there were a lot of different people enjoying it. they have a few booths, and some chairs and tables. You can see the cooks making your food, and the two waitresses that were working the night I went were very nice, and tentative. This is located on the end of the strip mall complex next to a small Japanese restaurant so there is plenty of parking. They even have some outside benches and chairs if you want to enjoy the sun, and if you don't feel like sitting inside you can order your food to go and it's really quickly made. Second time here. First time was ok. This time was pretty darn good. I got the Argentinas (beef and veggie) empanada, a beef flauta and a flauta with potato, onions and peas, and corn in a cup. Everything was delicious with the green sauce. My daughter loves the fruit cup with the Tajin seasoning. This place could easily turn into a five star with a few changes. Serve chips & salsa, even if you have to charge for it. Have music playing. Both of these things would make the wait time more pleasurable. And lastly, I would like to see an option to build a combo plate with items like an empanada, flauta, quesadilla with rice and beans. Very happy to find a non-chain restaurant up here. THE BEST RESTAURANT IN TOWN!! I come to this establishment several times a week and it never disappoints. Not only is the food great, but the service is amazing! Michelle is the best server I have ever had! She always has a smile on her face and visits the table often. She even has gotten me to try a few new things on the menu. It is obvious from the moment you walk in that Michelle really does care about the customers. In addition, the vegan menu is spectacular. As a vegan, it's tough to find suitable options at most restaurants. Momcorn, however, saw a need and addressed it with a double sided vegan menu that tastes incredible! Ordered the Taco dinner with steak and the tacos were absolutely delicious. I decided to use the red sauce on my tacos and found out the hard way that it is pretty hot if used excessively. Went there tonight after reading the reviews but was not impressed. First, ordered drinks, friend orders horchata, I order horchata also. "Oh, we don't have any more horchata so we can only get one small drink, not two." Ok, we can share. It tasted like milk with some cinnamon on the bottom. Order chips and pico de gallo for appetizer, it is nothing special. Friend wants tacos with cilantro, no onion. They can't do that bc the cilantro and onion are mixed together. What kind of Mexican place is this that doesn't have just cilantro?! We order beef quesadilla and beef and cheese taco on children's menu, friend orders beef burrito instead of tacos, I order chicken burrito. We get a cheese quesadilla, not beef. They take it back. The burrito is half lettuce and the chicken was not seasoned at all. Overall the meal was just meh, I've definitely had much better, can't believe all the good reviews to be honest. read more

This place was pretty good! I had a Groupon for this place so I tried it out. The food was tasty, I was particularly fond of the tortilla soup. The service was prompt and everyone was very friendly. The owner/manager even came over to our table to personally thank us for coming in and told us about how she acquires the ingredients, which I thought was pretty cool. The food here is good, but the heavily portion their toppings. Every time I've been here I've gotten a Quarterfield taco and barely a portion of rice and beans to where I can finish it with just a few spoonfuls. When I go to a normal Mexican restaurant I can't even finish the food whereas with Mamacorn I want seconds. read more

I'm sure this review will upset other people who LOVE Momcorn- but I have to be honest in my review. This is the 3rd time I've tried it, over the course of a year ( or so?)-at first I thought it was just because it was new, and the food would improve. But honestly, it's just not the case. First of all- the tamales have perhaps a tablespoon of filling, and bland flavor. The spicy pork soup had no pork in it- whatsoever. It would have been more honest to call it spicy pork broth.The burritos, chimichangas, and tacos have absolutely no seasoning, whatsoever. While I get the "healthy, gluten free" take- Momcorn is honestly the least Mexican fare I've ever had. I think it's a great place in terms of catering to families that would like a "healthy", albeit bland alternative to the true cuisine- But be prepared to bring your own real sauces, salsa, hot sauce, and any other seasonings if you want that true taste of Mexico. read more

My daughter and I stopped here after a long day at GA after hearing good reviews and we were not disappointed. Other than having to wait a very long time for a table (the place is small), we loved every part of this. We ordered guac and chips, and the guac was just to my taste and the chips seemed homemade. We also shared street corn, which was crazy-good. We then had the fish special and the plantain steak sandwich. Everything was delightfully tasty and hot. To us, it was just a notch above the typical Mexican-style restaurant. The ingredients were fresh, it all seemed homemade and it went above just the typical "tacos plus beans plus rice" that you get at most places. I went in thinking the food would be more like Taco Bell but was pleasantly surprised to find authentic food and an assortment of beautifully crafted home made salsas. This pains me to give 3 stars but it was just ok. First timer on 8/4 around 6p. Went based on 4 star rating. I like the little restaurant/take out atmosphere and the staff and owner were very friendly and helpful. But the actual items I ordered to go were not that special. I ordered the Flautas with ground beef, Sope with steak, tamale, chips with Salsa and cheese quesadilla. The cheese quesadilla was strange. We did not like at all. The tortilla was thick and the cheese was not creamy at all. The chips were greasy and not how I like them and the salsas were too watery for us. The Flautas and Sope were ok but I have had much better at places like Lomeli's in Round Lake. I am definitely going to give it another shot soon and try some of the other items like the fish taco's and see if I have a change of opinion. read more

Went in there the other night to try this place out. It was ok. I was quite disappointed about the elotes (mexican corn). I couldn't get over how small it was! Like...where do you even get corn that small!? (Maybe those freezer sized corn on the cobs?) Also, the mexican rice was just awful. I mean terrible. Maybe its a different style that Ive never had but Im in love with mexican food and havent ever had a rice like that. We had to ask three times for water which they didn't bring them till the end of the meal. They did not check in after the food was delivered. I can't speak for the restaurant itself, but the food is delicious! We had a large lunch order delivered and everything came correctly and promptly. I ordered the quesadillas and they were just fantastic. Almost more like soft tacos, really, but very filling and perfectly cooked. Honestly, the corn tortillas are what made the meal for me. They tasted fresh and authentic. The rice and beans were also amazing. I had a couple bites of flauta which was excellent, along with a strawberry empanada for dessert. Can't say enough good things about this food. My 3-year-old daughter even cleaned her plate (beef taco) and that is somewhat of a miracle. I have been back here 3 or 4 times since my 1st review. My family enjoys everything we try here. And we always order a couple of extra items simply to see what they are like. Tortilla soup. Get it. It is rustic, and crazy full of flavor. Tamale's... I prefer the pork. It's spicy and good. My son loves the burrito. Fish taco's are good. The taco plate is very good. Taco salad in a crispy bowl is good. I even found a small chicken bone in my food! You know what that means? It was made by a person.. not a robot.. by hand!!! This is not a complaint. I ask if you could cook a whole chicken down from scratch and make it into something tasty.. sans any bones or crunch bits. You must realize that this is food made by people in a kitchen from scratch. There is no delivery truck dumping frozen pre-made garbage into this place. In the food hell that is the Gurnee area.. this is a huge sigh of relief. Real food. Go here. Eat here. Words of advice.. This is NOT Taco Bell. Some of the food is actually spicy... which I like. They will give you a word of warning if you have a low spice threshold, and accommodate your needs. Suggestions to Momcorn. The menu and options are still a bit confusing. I like your idea of picture based menu's. Keep working on options for pulling together a complete meal with sides. Many of the items seem ala carte if you don't know what to ask for. Tableside service.. but are you supposed to pay up front at the register? It also looks like you are still struggling with your point of sale/order placement system.. from what the wait staff put in.. and what follow up questions come out of the kitchen. Nothing special at all. Beans and rice are tasteless, beans taste straight from a can. We ordered a fountain Pepsi, they brought a can even though they have a fountain pop machine and never told us it wouldn't be fountain. They then charge for another can if you want more. We ordered kids meals from the images on the menu. We asked if the sides could be substituted for other sides, the server said yes they can. Well turns out they actually don't have kids meals. Each item is separate. So 2.99 for a tiny quesadilla that isn't enough to fill my 2 year old. Then and extra 2.00 for beans. Tacos were ok, didn't seem to have any seasoning on them. Wouldn't go back. I'd rather eat at Tacos el Norte - their food has flavor and is worth the price. read more

I wanted to like Momcorn better based on the reviews, but didn't have anything that I was excited about. Was hoping for fresh corn in the corn appetizer as it is height of the season for it, but it was either canned or frozen corn. I ordered chicken enchiladas not realizing they would be $12.50; they were kind of bland, no sides included, and I think may have been cooked in the microwave and not finished in the oven. The tortilla soup was good as were the guac and freshly cooked chips. The place is clean and the service was pleasant and helpful. I'd try it once more and order something else just because of the positive reviews, plus I like to support family run businesses. read more
