Not bad sushi for takeout! My friend ordered online for a Thursday pick-up and it was ready in15 minutes! We ordered two different rolls and takoyaki. The takoyaki was pretty good - a classic. Wish there were a bit more octopus pieces because it felt like it was almost all batter. For the rolls we got the Rock n' Roll (Spicy Tuna, Green Tobiko, on a yellowtail & Avocado roll) and Volcano Roll (Smoked eel w. cream cheese wrapped by avocado, spicy octopus & spicy tuna) Rock n Roll - I enjoyed the blend of flavors of all the ingredients. However I felt that the spicy tuna was puréed (if I can describe it this way) so much that it weakened the flavor of the spicy tuna. Also was not spicy. Volcano Roll - I am not a big fan of the cream cheese in sushi but if you do, this is the specialty roll to go for. The blend of the different ingredients were extremely tasty, otherwise, and made it quite filling. I thought the vegetarian sushi was pretty good. I hate the flavor of seaweed, so I substituted the regular wrapper for soy. I wish there had been a different flavor sauce than just soy sauce to choose from. My friends also tried the hibachi grill and seemed to enjoy it. They served very large portion sizes. We went on a Saturday night, and it was a pretty popular place. We had a party of nine and there was enough room for all of us I definitely think I would come back for sushi. Valentine roll was amazing! It was perfectly crispy yet soft, lightly spicy, and flavorful, especially with the special chef's sauce (creamy and a bit spicy). Definitely a must-get here!! Crazy roll (eel and avocado), on the other hand, while good, just tasted like a very standard roll. Sushi & Sashimi Lunch was a good deal and quite filling. The salmon sashimi in that dish was absolutelyyyyyy amazing. The other sashimi types included yellowtail and tuna, both of which were pretty good but not a standout like the salmon. The accompanying miso soup was disappointing, being too salty. Overall though, good sushi! Plus, my friend is pretty picky about sushi, but he really likes this place. Maybe this was just an off day and there was some catastrophic mixup in the kitchen, but this was the worst Nabeyaki Udon I've ever had in my life. ORDERING: We called ahead to order three orders of the Nabeyaki Udon, which according to the website comes with "Shrimp Tempura, fish cake, chicken, vegetables & egg." The service was friendly and prompt. PICKUP: Grabbing our takeout order was a bit tricky. It was around 7 PM in the evening on a Friday, and there was mess of cars double parked with the hazards on outside the restaurant. However, we fortunately were able to find a spot a block over. NABEYAKI UDON: So where to start... We had ordered three orders of the Nabeyaki Udon and were ready to dig in to a hot and hearty bowl of thick noodles. What we got instead was three containers of chilled *ramen*. The broth it came with was pretty disappointing, little more than a watery diluted stock of something vaguely reminiscent of a miso soup. After a lot of fishing we were able to find a slice of fish cake. It was my first time visiting Momiji. We stopped by before my movie time which was at 7:30. We got there around 6:20 and they gave us the happy hour menu which was ending in 10 min (6:30). They told us if we ordered by 6:30 we'd be able to get them with the happy hour price. We sat downstairs, and there were I believe 2 waitstaffs 3 sushi chefs, and a manager? Anyways, they have an open sushi bar, so I could watch the chefs make our sushi, and they were really fast too. Our sushi came out within a couple minutes and their quality was ok. I'm used to having the higher quality sushi so I can't speak for everybody though. However, one of the servers accidentally kicked my chair (which I'd be fine with if they apologized) but he just walked away as if nothing happened, and they all hover over you to take your plates out of the way even before you're completely done. Other than that little mishap, came on a Sunday, not crowded the bottom area has the hibachi and the top bar area has the sushi area. I'm assuming you can do both at the bottom grill but for a more quick in and out this is the place to be. Loved how it's just a causal setting. No need to dress up for this place. They do have a variety of Asian beers for those who are looking for a diverse drink list. Can't go wrong with any sushi! Loved it. Only 3 stars because the cleanliness and the restaurant itself. The bar stools were super wobbly, if I weighed anymore I'd be terrified to sit on them. Other than that I can't vouch for the grill aspect but you cannot go wrong with the sushi! Ordered take out from here and loved it! There's a bunch of good sushi spots in this area with Nama around the corner and Kura Revolving Sushi Bar down the street, but this is great for take out! It's a good price and quality sushi! I got the salmon skin, salmon, and the eel and avocado. It looks like my boyfriend got tuna and salmon and avocado, tempura, and yellowtail and scallion? but I can't say for sure! This is my first time here. I came for dinner around 830 on Sunday. The place is pretty easy to find. The place is clean and you're greeted right away. They have a good variety of sushi and a very unique one that I've never seen before which was the peanut and avocado. The sushi was fresh and the price was great. The only issue was that the upstairs was already closed and overall it's a pretty small space so I'm pretty sure there would be a wait on busy days. Went here on a date about thirty minutes before this place closed and I was so happy that they seated us promptly, we weren't rushed, and service was great. I got the salmon and avocado roll, miso soup and salad and it was delicious! I came on a Tuesday night and was able to get parking right in front. 2.5-3 stars for me. The sushi is fine, the prices are ok (although, high for the quality), can't speak to service as I've only ever ordered takeout. The sashimi for two is a big meal. The fish is sliced thick and eating this entire platter is extremely filling, which is a good thing. The bad part is that the fish isn't great quality, and I actually ended up leaving some as I couldn't get over the taste and didn't want to drown everything out in wasabi and soy sauce (they don't use real wasabi root which probably also factors into this). What I remember from the sashimi platter: tuna - very fishy tasting, did not enjoy this. salmon - fine, but pretty subdued flavor aji - not sliced well. parts were overly chewy and not palatable hamachi - didn't taste like much red snapper - again, didn't taste like much there was another cut of sashimi, but I don't remember what it was nor remember it being good or bad tobiko - very fishy/salty. Had trouble eating this ikura - very fishy. Ended up eating a few eggs and tossing the rest spicy tuna - best option in this platter. the spicy sauce masked any sort of bad flavors that may have been in there. I've also had a few rolls, which I enjoyed. I'd come back to order takeout sushi rolls and skip sashimi in the future. Shrimp tempura was my favorite. Scallop was decent (and only around $5). Now I had read that Momiji had some of the best sushi in DC, and as an avid consumer of sushi, I had to let myself be the judge. My partner and I had had these wonderful plans to do a date night out on the town in DC for our 2 year anniversary. It was going to be amazing. Cue COVID-19 ruining life as we know it... Mayor Bowser (big fan!) announced all restaurants would be closer to dine-in service that day at 10pm. So we decided to scrap the plans for later in the week and hustle to Momiji STAT! The restaurant is in Chinatown (love that!) and is located on the basement level and second level of a building. Only the basement was open, and theres a large hibachi style area and several tables. It's very quaint and has a big city feel to it. We were basically the only ones there at 7pm on the last day of dine-in service for the foreseeable future. That meant that we had the attention of all the servers and they were incredible. We were waited on hand and foot and they really made the night feel so special. Now for drinks, I heard the margarita was good, and that was correct. It was nice and strong and delicious. They had a lot of cocktails to choose from and they were not too bad! Try them! We went all out and decided to get a couple apps before the main course. We got the gyoza and the fried oysters. The gyoza were just awesome and had the most delicious dipping sauce with them! The fried oysters were huge fried balls and they were super crispy. I did not expect them to be that large or that good but I loved them. For the main course we got the Sushi Loveboat! It was a sight to behold! A giant vessel packed with so much sushi and sashimi. I loved ever single individual bite of it. It was such a nice way to try everything! I had never had some of the fish and rolls before so that was a cool experience. My tastes buds were surely taken on a tremendous voyage! Overall this place was the bomb. I cannot wait to go back for another night of delicious sushi! It was also fun to be two of the last people to dine in DC before the shutdown! read more

I tried this restaurant after reading the raving reviews. I ordered via Uber eats, when the food arrived I was highly disappointed in the rolls I received, my California rolls barely had any crab meat in them at all and was completely overpowered by the amount of avocado and cucumber.. it was shameful. Ordered two hibachi entrees and two sushi rolls for dinner last night and it all was so delicious. The hibachi entrees come with a lot of food. It contains your choice of protein(s), fried rice, vegetables, soup and salad. We ordered the eel and avocado roll and the Mickey roll. Both were so fresh. I always get worried ordering sushi since I lived in Japan and now am sensitive to old fish but this place serves fresh fish. It was so yummy and so much food. I was very glad to see there was a well-rated sushi spot close to me, so I decided to give Momiji a shot to satisfy my roll craving. I went with the kani salad, Valentine Roll, Boston Roll, and Alaskan Roll. All four items were excellent. The fish and crab meat tasted fresh. The Rice and other fillings were also very tasty. The Valentine roll is one of their signatures. The rolls are shaped in little hearts and it's served with a unique sauce to dip in. It was unique and definitely enjoyable! I ordered for pick-up (which I believe is all they're offering during COVID). I called ahead and they told me it would be ready in 10. They give you a number and you walk up to the table to get your food and pay. The process was easy, and the time they quoted me was definitely accurate! Overall, I'm happy I tried Momiji. The prices were also extremely reasonable for sushi (standard rolls being $6 on average and signature rolls being $14-15 on average). The pick-up process was a breeze and the food was excellent. While other sushi restaurants have declined in quality during the pandemic, Momiji has really stayed consistent, if not, stepped up their game. So thankful to have finally found a great sushi take out place that gives you generous amount of quality fish in their rolls. I'm usually a nigiri girl but was craving rolls and Momiji really hit the spot. I love how they do not give you so much filler rice but instead focus on giving you a generous amount of fish-- the fish to rice ratio is perfect. I also really appreciate the fair prices so I can plan for regular take out from here. Called for take out and was able to pick up within ten minutes! Momiji is a gem in the city & Chinatown! There's a possibility I'm unhealthily addicted to this restaurant. The Alaska roll is on point as per usual; and this was my first time being a spicy salmon roll (ever), and it was amazing!! I'm usually a spicy tuna person but I think this is my new go-to. It was SO GOOD. I can't say enough good things about Momiji. Also not pictured (which was my first time trying here) was salmon nigiri and the house salad with ginger dressing. The piece of salmon was HUGE (completely worth the $3.95) and the ginger dressing on the salad is to die for. Delicious signature sushi rolls. Tried a bunch of different rolls and everything was fresh and flavorful. The signature rolls we tried were loaded with fillings and toppings. You aren't really getting a "pure" flavor of fresh fish against rice and avocado. You're getting a big mouthful of a bunch of flavor combinations. Many of the rolls we tried had a cooked component and when we ate them, they were still warm. Very pleasant. That's exactly what I was craving and it hit the spot. I highly recommend the sunny girl and mango madness rolls. The sunny girl has salmon tempura inside and fresh salmon on the outside and the combination is delicious--the raw salmon was creamy and complemented the tempura well. The mango madness was bursting with fresh mango flavor and was light and pleasant. Glad to have a favorite sushi spot nearby! read more

Once again, the Yelp community delivered! The fish was fresh, the rolls were a great size and tight, the only disappointing thing is that I only have one stomach. The hand rolls are better priced than most places I've been, but the nigiri was more than normal. Each order only comes with one piece, instead of two like most restaurants. The first thing I must tell you is that this is not a fancy restaurant, it does not have a luxurious decoration and it is not modern and beautiful, BUT it has real Japanese food, served by Japanese and with exceptional freshness. What matters to me is the food, beyond a beautiful place but with poor food. Momiji is a place to eat and enjoy good sushi and many other Japanese dishes. I recommend you try the bento box, delicious. Alaska, California, Mickey roll, shrimp tempura, mango madness, my favorites. Excellent happy hour between 3pm and 6pm. We were actually seated before another group that had arrived before us, because they were waiting on one person and we weren't waiting for anyone. The location is not flashy; we were seated on the first floor which is a "garden level" area. There is an upstairs as well, but this is not a large establishment and tables are fairly tightly packed. There were a lot of great choices on the menu; I opted for a spicy maki combo which came with a cup of miso soup which was excellent, and three rolls; I am struggling to remember exactly what they were, but I know one was salmon and one was tuna; they were all fresh and very good! I don't know that they were at all spicy, but that's fine; too spicy overpowers the fish in my opinion. Service was fast, and prices were very reasonable. Had a great experience with Momiji. Decided to try this restaurant after reading the positive Yelp reviews. I was running errands, so I called ahead to place a to go order. All in all I ordered about 6 rolls and some sashimi to share with family. The ordering process was smooth. It took all of two minutes to call and place my order and the person who answered the phone let me know it would be ready in 15 minutes. The prices are phenomenal! I love sushi, but often opt to get something less expensive. What I ordered from Momiji would usually cost me double the amount I paid at other restaurants! To be honest, I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for," but that's not at all the case with Momiji. This was by far the best sushi I have had in DC! My favorite of what I ordered was the crazy roll. My family enjoyed the tuna sashimi and the spicy tuna rolls the best. From the small portion of the menu I tried, it really doesn't seem like you can go wrong! I will definitely be back as soon as another sushi craving hits. This place is everything! Food is definitely 5 stars, but the ambiance/service is a 4. My friend suggested this place and I was stoked for sushi. It was a nice surprise to see that we can also get hibachi. My friend did preface it by saying that the outside doesn't look appealing, but the food is delicious. They won't seat you unless you have your party. There is a downstairs and upstairs section. We sat upstairs and our table was very wobbly. (We didn't say anything about it though.) Our water cups were filled in consistently, which is always a plus. My friend and I ordered hot sake, edemame, gyoza, miso soup, hibachi steak and shrimp, and a rainbow roll. Everything was delicious. Edemame was seasoned perfectly and snapped. Miso soup was bomb for it to cost $2. Gyoza exploded flavor in my mouth. I can't even begin to describe the hibachi steak and shrimp. (Great serving and the quaiity of meat -- ) Rainbow roll was also on point. Everything was delicious.
