Lesson learned: Never order tamales for a special occasion without trying it first--no matter how many positive reviews they have. I drove 70 miles roundtrip to get my order of chicken tamales, only to find they were so spicy (even without the green sauce) that I had to throw them out! I tried reaching out to Momma's Tamales about it, but they never replied to my message. Their website never mentioned anything about the tamales being "spicy." Is this just a lack of consideration for people who can't handle spice, or a major menu oversight? I'm beyond disappointed, especially since this was for Christmas Eve. Never again. I placed an order online to be picked up at my local farmer's market the Saturday before Christmas Eve. They accepted my order and my money, however were a no show. The organizer of the market went above and beyond for days, up and until Christmas Eve trying to personally deliver my tamales. I was unable to pick them up due to being ill. I never got my product, and was only offered a refund, and now, no Christmas dinner. This is a huge let down from them. Not up to their customer service standards, nor did they even offer an apology. Never heard of the place, but as soon as I devoured two tamales this morning, I knew I had to find out where my cousin picked them up. May is when my Mom's side of the family have our family reunion. 2024 was the first post pandemic reunion we've had and to get back to this annual tradition, we hold a picnic style reunion (basially potluck lol) where every one brings what they like with enough to share. Youd think this would be unsuccessful but we end up with an array of dishes amd tamales was one fo them this year. My cousin decides to roll up with two pans of tamales - chicken and cheese and brisket with cheese. I saw these mini packages stacked in the kitchen and wondered what they were. I decided to put one to the side for take home (because we typically have loads of food for people to take home after our reunion). In the am, I decided to air fry the package of tamales. Just looking at them I could tell they were going to good! They were super thick. and upon biting into them- the smoked brisket and cheese gave me Homer Simpson drool. I ended up coming home in the afternoon and making the rest of the tamales dinner. They were too GOOD to leave in the fridge! If I'm ordering tamales by the dozen or any kind of catering, I'm more than likely going to do it from Momma's Tamales. A specialty tamale spot in Bellaire, originally started off as a small stand in farmers markets before graduating to a brick and mortar last year. For owner Ana, the tamales are a testament to the legacy her mother created (hence the name), and has become one of the area's best tamale makers in the process. While the place is super tiny and offers only take-out (#1), I would recommend calling ahead of time to place an order and ensure availability for various tamales. They also handle online orders from their website and through the Yelp listing. The staff speaks both Spanish and English and credit card is accepted. Their tamales vary from traditional (chicken, pork, spinach and cheese) to specialty ones (jalapeno & cheese, black bean & cheese, and bricket & cheese for an extra $2 per dozen). I will likely always order by the dozen (#2) and do a mixed dozen based on what they choose for me. If I'm going to choose, then I personally the spinach & cheese as well as the pork is straight fire. The brisket and cheese will turn some heads, and while it's good, it doesn't out-sabor the pork. Vegan options are also available. Even their beans and rice are lowkey delicious. Most may tend to balk these sides, but they're incredibly important for the completeness of any of their meals. I also appreciate they offer enchiladas, fajitas, and a killer carne guisada. The beef enchiladas and fajitas are personally my go-tos. I tend to call a day or two ahead of time for party packages. For $150-300, anywhere from 8-16 *dozen* tamales (#3) with several quarts of beans and rice with salsas. The latter are also no joke: zesty, creamy, and the perfect condiment for any of the food listed above. Lastly, I'm so impressed with their operation that I'm pleased to know they still operate out of multiple farmers markets across the city. Whether it's me eating their tamales while browsing stuff at the markets or going HAM at a party with dozens of variety, I'm always happy to support (and eat from) Momma's Tamales. The tamales are actually pretty good, but the customer service is absolutely abysmal. We put in a pre-order on a Wednesday, and the soonest pick-up time was on a Saturday. We drive 25 minutes out to a farmers market only to be told that they didn't have our order. The reason given was that they only check the pre-orders from the past two days. They tell us that tomorrow they will have our order ready at a different farmers market. At 8pm that night, we get a call from them saying that they are no longer going to be at that farmers market, and that we will need to pick up our order at their downtown location. Yep! I just found my new tamale place. They have just raised the bar pretty high. In the Houston area, just about every neighborhood has one awesome little old lady who is the master of tamale making (God bless every one of them). All the people around go to her near Christmastime with their tamale orders. If you get a dozen, you're lucky, but take what you can get. My local tamale lady officially retired last year. In my mind, she resides in the great Pantheon of Tamale Makers. As we get closer to Christmas, it's been bothering me. A constant nagging voice in the back of my head asking me, "what are you going to do about the tamale situation?" I better find a new tamale place soon! Lo and behold, the Houston Chronicle listed their top tamale joints in town (I guess the Chronicle is still good for something) and Momma's was at the top of their list. Some of my friends have been recommending them to. There's definitely a buzz in the air about Momma's Tamales. Today I tried them. Oh man! They are fantastic!!!! Chicken, pork, cheese and jalapeño, cheese and spinach tamales are all delicious and excellent. Red and green salsas were the perfect match. The Spanish rice was some of the best I've ever had. HIDDEN GEM!!! This is my first time trying Tamales and I'm so glad I stopped by here to have it for the first time! The owner here is very sweet and nice. I've ordered their mixed dozen with spinach/cheese and brisket/cheese, I loved the tamales so much I went back in and got another dozen (pork/chicken). Man oh man they taste sooo authentic and fresh! It does come with a complimentary green salsa per order or you could buy a larger one for $6 (8oz), $12 (10oz). This place only offers take out, no sit ins. Amazing place and I have nothing negative to say about it. I definitely recommend making a stop and trying out her awesome tamales !! Was looking for tamales one day and found ourselves at Momma's! A small little store in a strip mall on the end Holcombe towards Bellaire! I never knew this place existed until now! We went in looking for a dozen pork tamales - but they didn't have a dozen pork ones so we were forced to get half a dozen pork and half a dozen chicken. They ended up charging us more for half a dozen of each, compared to the price for a dozen, even though it wasn't our fault they didn't have what we wanted. Okay.. not the best customer service here but whatever - the difference isn't that much, but would've made a huge difference just with the gesture. Delicious! I came across Mommas Tamales Instagram page and soooo glad I did. They were very quick in responding to all my questions and made it very simple to place an order and pick up at the store. I ordered: 1/2 a dozen of Jalapeño & Cheese, 1/2 Pork & 1/2 Chicken. My favorite was the Jalapeño & cheese but all were amazing. One problem I have encountered at other places are that the tamales are very dry... Mommas tamales nailed it. The tamales were fresh and not dry at all. Glad to have a local spot to visit. P.S. The tamales themselves approach five stars. Held back by dumb policies. The tamales are bigger and better than competitors but cost more. The pork and brisket-and-cheese are the best. The jalapeno-and-cheese just didn't have enough jalapeno. The green sauce is good which is fortunate since it is their sole sauce. What holds this place back is a brain-dead policy on sauces. You get three per order regardless of how much you order. I ordered three dozen for over $50 and get three little sauces, but the guy in front of me who ordered just one dozen gets three also. I asked about if I had a party and ordered 10 dozen. They said that you get just three. The clerk said they have to maintain their profit margin on the sauce. Huh? Why not give one or two per order plus one extra for each dozen? read more

Too much red chili in the pork tamales for my liking as well as salt. I wanted to like them so much . There is plenty of meat and the masa has really good flavor . But definitely not my mamas tamales. Tamale prices are on the rise so prepare yourself to pay at least 16 with tax for a dozen . I think for the holidays we will stick to making them ourselves. Well now this will be my tamale go to spot. They had their tent set up at the Urban Market so since I was hungry I decided to get the spinach and cheese 1/2 dz only $8. When I got home and opened it and was a bit skeptical because of the light color of the masa but once I tasted it I was in tamale heaven. It was so good. I can honestly taste the spinach and cheese. I've now tried their Jalapeño, Spinach, Pork, and Brisket tamales. Being from San Antonio I've had a lot of different types of tamales here, there, and everywhere. Mommas has true homemade tamales. In fact, they make the very best I've EVER had! Their spinach and cheese and creamy and delicious just plain, but their spicy green sauce kicks it up a notch. The Jalapeño and pork are also delicious because their masa is so light and allows the filling flavor to stand out and be dominant instead of store bought being a bunch of pasty masa with a little filling. HOWEVER, the brisket tamales taste like you are just eating smoked brisket, you do not taste the masa at all. Do yourself a favor and check Mommas out. read more
