Beef fajita torta
Kimberly R.

This is my favorite taqueria I've tried so far!! They have two locations but I visit this one the most. The other location is in Gulf gate and it has a drive-thru. My main go to, the best thing here in my opinion is the torta. I LOVE the beef fajita torta. I've had the pechuga pollo (chicken breast) torta and it's great also. What I love about this place is they use REAL fajita meat, not pretend fajita meat like some other spots. This is legit skirt steak and it's grilled to perfection. My husband loves the street tacos and gorditas but he always prefers the tortas. I add a side of fries with queso and it's delish! They have a cantaloupe juice that's to die for good! This place also offers a variety of plates and other authentic dishes. The soup is also perfect on a cold winter day (caldo reyes) and they have a whole fish dish if you're into that. The service is good but if they are busy be prepared to be patient waiting on your check!

We had been on the road for about 7 hours and were starving. We saw the sign between two parking lots and though that was slightly confusing, we did find it in the back of the second parking lot between a vet and La Placita. As tired as I was, I think I found this at the perfect time to lift my spirits. It smelled so delicious outside and that's a good sign!! When we entered we saw the register straight ahead, a prep area to the right and a few tables. To the left was a second, larger dining area. We were greeted by a very friendly staff and told to seat ourselves. A lot of our visit was half in Spanish and half in English, they easily switched in between, based on what needed more clarification. I felt our server was kind and professional and I was pleased with our visit. I was also happy with the prices. It was such a good meal that when I paid $16.44 at the register before we left, I felt like it was a steal! Our complimentary chips and salsa were delicious! The chips were thick and crunchy like I like them and definitely tasted like they were made in house. The salsa was warm and pleasantly spicy. It was difficult to stop eating! :) My husband got a Dr. Pepper which was served in a can, so I switched to an agua fresca and chose the melon. The Dr. Pepper being a $2 charge for the can is the only thing I felt was overpriced. My agua fresca was worth every bit of the $1.99. It was clearly made fresh and literally tasted better with each sip! It was outstandingly delicious, just sweet enough and I couldn't stop talking about it when we left. Make sure you get some! I got two tacos for $1.95 each and a small side of rice for $1.75. The tacos come with lettuce, tomato, onion and cilantro automatically with no extra charge, quite the deal! The rice was good, but gone too soon. Next time I'll get the large. The al pastor was tasty and full of flavor. If you like fatty meats like my husband, I would recommend this. Personally I prefer leaner meats, so I felt it was a little fattier than I would normally order, but you can't argue with the result in the flavor. The pollo guisada was very juicy and well seasoned. I scarfed it down, so good! I got to sample some of my husbands food as well. He was really pleased with how authentic his meal tasted. The carne asada quesadilla was small, but worth the $2.35 price tag. I tasted some of the carne asada and this was full of bold flavor. I've never had carne asada seasoned so perfectly and it was cooked perfectly too. It was not chewy at all, which is usually the only reason I shy away from it at other places. The last thing I sampled, shortly before we left was a few bites of the gordita picadillo my husband couldn't finish. For $3.19 this is a good deal as it's quite filling for it's size. I liked this sooooo much, it was soooo good. I actually said 'wow' after my first bite. The ground beef and gordita together are such a comforting, homey combination. It's been a long time since I've been to a place where everything was so perfectly seasoned and delicious! I wish I lived in the area as this would be a regular stop. I hate Houston traffic, but I will be happy to return so I can stop in here and have more of this delicious food! I'm jealous of those of you who live here locally! This is one of the best taquerias I've ever been to. If you haven't tried them yet, get over there now!

queso fundido/flamdo with chorizo. drooooooooool

Recommended to this place from a friend and was not disappointed. Definitely put my Spanish skills to the test when I had I difficult time order water! Oh well, more reason to practice my Spanish so I can appreciate the hidden gems around Houston like this one. There is another location on Wrinkler Rd but this is the one to go to apparently. The menu here is all authentic mexican dishes, while there are lots of options it's not overwhelming where you are reading through a book trying to decide what to get. It was a slow weekday, so not particularly packed but still a few guests. Service was good but I could see on a weekend this place being packed to the brim, lots of seats in the dining area so I'm sure they are pushing out lots of food. Started off with the queso fundido or flamado as i'm used to seeing, which is the melted white cheese queso. This is not the liquid kind but actual thick melted cheese. Ordered it with the chorizo and it was served with lots of meat and hot tortillas. This is good for 2-4 people, can be a little too much for 2 people if you already ate a lot of the complimentary chips served. Warning this can be pretty greasy but if you picked mexican for dinner you shouldn't be worried about eating greasy... TACOS! $2 a taco for about a 6-inch flour taco that's grilled a little for that added crisp can't be beat. I recommend sticking with about 3-5 depending on how many chips you scarf down first. Out of the ones I ordered my favorite DEFINITELY the al pastor (marinate pork), then barbacoa (bbq beef), picadillo (ground beef) and then carne asada (beef fajita). The pastor was by far my favorite, it wasn't as sweet as most I've had. A lot of time it will have pineapple, this one didn't which was fine by me. The meat was shaved off the spindle and grilled fresh on the flattop so it had a nice crisp to it as well. Barbacoa was solid, good but not my particular favorite one I've had. For picadillo, it was actually the first time I've tried this, which wasn't bad, the taco had lettuce and tomato which wasn't my favorite. Instead I added some cilantro and onions as those are my favorite toppings. I would definitely come back here, especially for the al pastor. I meant to order a gordita and heard the crispy tacos were worth it so those will be ordered next time! If you are looking for good authentic Mexican food at hole in the wall joint, look no further.

My family and I have been coming here for what seems like ages! As far as the location, I will say it's definitely not fancy, but they more than make up for it with their good and service. The restaurant is located in a less than desirable area of town, but I have never felt unsafe here. Plus,it seems every time I come, there are always a couple of officers enjoying their lunch or dinner. I have tried a couple of items off their menu, which compared to more commercial taquerias, can seem limited. I will say all items are good choices and pretty much cover all food groups. The tortas are my favorite here, no beans! I also loved the tacos al pastor and fried fish. The presentation of the food takes you back to grandma's house on a Sunday morning! Very traditional and delicious! The service here is wonderful! The waitstaff is excellent and always check up on you even when the place is busting at the seams. I have never waited more than five minutes for my food and that's always a plus for me! Great food at a wonderful price, around $10 for you meal, is a win-win situation.

Carne Asada Gordita and Carne Asada Tostada with no crema

I've eaten here for 15 years and it's one of my favorite places to eat in all of Houston. I'm embarrassed to realize that I've never written a review....until now! Taqueria Mexico is a clean, nice restaurant that is one of the best values in the city. My favorite items are carne asada (i.e. beef fajita) items such as the gordita and tostada. Portions are generous. When my kids were younger, they sometimes complained the quesadillas had too much meat! While this is labeled a taqueria, it is more of a regular Mexican restaurant with always friendly table service. Be sure to ask for the red and green sauces in addition to the regular red table salsa. Most of the items have a white queso fesco type of cheese, not the yellow cheese of Tex-Mex. If you want some yellow cheese, order the enchiladas with yellow cheese and the Tex-Mex gravy. Many items can be ordered a-la-carte. This is a good value and lets you get a bit of everything.

Inside it is a one room eatery with counter service. My first visit was to try the Birria Burrito for $16 with the meal delivered about 10 minutes later. It consisted of their Birria meat cooked for 4 hours mixed with chorizo, cheese, rice, beans and sour cream all wrapped in a large flour tortilla seasoned with their special red colored seasoning. With the meal came a cup of consomne'. Guy Fieri would say, Welcome to Flavortown! It was delicious. The Birria beef was so tender and the flavored flour tortilla with that proprietary red seasoning they use was perfect. It was a very filling meal and well worth the price. So much so, I thought about it the next day. Another visit was to try one of their specialities, the Quesabirria for $14. This meal consisted of 3 grilled and crispy corn tortillas seasoned again with their special red colored magic dust. The tortillas had the delicious Birria meat and cheese inside and I again loved them. The tortillas are only slightly crispy and the meat, cheese and tortillas memorable. This meal also came with a cup of consommé for dipping. Another nice thing about eating here is the customer service. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful. The guy bussing the tables acted more like the owner than an employee with his helpfulness and the actual manager came out to check on us. Impressive for a counter service restaurant. Tacos Dona Lena deserves its reputation as one of the best restaurants of its kind. Incredible food and employees all at very reasonable prices. When I think of tacos and burritos, this place is what comes to mind!

Allow me to be Review No. 1,100 following my visit to this wonderful culinary gem yesterday…read more By default, Spring Branch is Houston's Koreatown, but it's not unusual to find establishments with Spanish-language branding on them throughout the neighborhood. And Tacos Doña Lena, on which I'll heap tons of praise on, is among them. A group of friends and I had supper here before a live show down the street at Eighteen Ten Ojeman. Upon seeing the storefront when we pulled into the parking lot, my first thought was, "Okay, this is legit Mexican, not Tex-Mex." The interior is quite small with some tables and an ample late Saturday afternoon crowd. What caught my eye is how the environment is what you might expect to find at a family-run taqueria off the beaten path. Rock en Español blaring from the sound system. Colorful papel picado draped from the ceiling. A framed Mexican flag and several references to the central Mexican municipality of Guanajuato. The intoxicating smell of spice-laced grilled beef wafting through the air. Simply put, we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. I glanced at the menu. There are numerous, delicious-sounding items that happen to be wallet-friendly, a bit cheaper than if you were to go to Gringos or Jimmy Changas. According to a mutual, the tacos here are the main draw, but what really caught my attention and appetite was the ramen birria. Mujeres y caballeros (ladies and gentlemen), let me proclaim that Tacos Doña Lena turns a noodle dish with origins in Japan and is a known staple in college dorm rooms into a must-try on this part of America's fourth-largest city. Two amazing food cultures unite for a fiery meeting of the minds. Anchored by a rich, tasty consomé that's spicy but not enough to where you need to drink multiple glasses of water, there's a prime mix of ramen noodle, beef birria, cheese, fried egg, rabanos, garbazo, and corn accompanied by cilantro, onions, and a pair of fried tostadas. I was so impressed with how the contents of the ramen blended together. Since it was ramen after all despite the south of the border touchup, I still ate it the traditional way: pick up the noodles and sip the soup. There was so much that I had no choice but to put it in a takeout container. Sure, Spring Branch may be home to some great traditional Korean restaurants, but don't sleep on Tacos Doña Lena.

Since it was my first time here, I ended up ordering 1 chorizo and 1 asada taco, churros, limon aguas, and my friend got the asada taco as well and a hortchata! Since it was super busy (especially on saturday night) it was about a 30 minute wait foe our food but it was well worth it! They hand out free chicharrones and they were super crunchy and a nice snack while we waited for our food. The limon aguas was super refreshing especially in the summer heat and the horchata was really good! We sat at the counter top that overlooks the kitchen. I love that the open kitchen concept so you can see them making your food right in front of you! Everything smelled so good so I was excited for my food. I love that they give radishes, cucumbers, and plenty of limes on the side. I definitely love all of the toppings and the more the better! I tried all of the salsas and the salsa de chile de arbol was by far my favorite! super spicy but had so much flavor. The chorizo was good but a little dry for my liking. I did just want to try it so I can try more than one flavor but I think I would get it again as a breakfast taco with egg instead. The asada was my favorite of the two so much flavor and plenty of meat! I was content with these 2 tacos but I could have definitely eaten more if we didn't order churros as well! The churros came with classic condensed milk and dulce de leche which is just carmelized condensed milk. The churros were crunchy and warm on the outside and had a chewy texture like mochi on the inside! Super yummy and not too sweet! I liked both sauces and would definitely get this again. Overall, I had a great experience and I will be craving the tacos until the next time I can come back! I can't wait to try a lot of their other menu items as well. Definitely recommend!
