Moved away from this recently but had to pick up a package because I mailed it to the wrong address :( Soooo while I was in the area I decided to stop by Momo and grab early dinner, and I'm super glad I did. I went on a Wednesday around 4pm so it was not busy at all. I was able to grab a table of 4 to myself where I hung out and read after eating. It felt comfortable and not too close to others unless you are right by the door. For food, I ordered 1 order of spicy bombs and the mentaiko udon. I was a bit hesitant at first about the udon since it's a warm dish which didn't sound good for the summer, but after some thought and encouragement from the waiter I decided to go for it and also add extra ikura. The waiter mentioned you can add other items as well. Either way it was delicious!! If you like mentaiko or ikura, the udon is for you! Overall I definitely enjoyed eating here alone or with friends. I've been here twice now, and the two things I suggest the most would be to dine in and to order the sushi bombs. I went a few months back in search of a go-to, affordable sushi spot and was feeling hopeful. Though not traditional, the sushi bombs were fun and added a bit of flavor with each "topping" of the fish. The most recent time, I ordered to very friendly phone service! I got the una ten and philli rolls, excited to sample their vegan cream cheese. I'm not a huge fan of fusion sushi and their maki came off as that. The takeout wasn't as fresh and delicious, and the fish was a bit skimpy on the maki. The portion was disappointing at 6 pieces per roll, which explains the good price. I found this sushi spot courtesy of Yelp, and decided to make good use of my first weekend in Brooklyn to check it out! It was a little pricey, which is my only gripe. Our bill was $34 without tip and I felt like my appetite had barely been satiated, however, I cannot deny that the food was good. We ordered the Party Bomb plate, which is an assortment of sushi bombs, and also their gyoza. The sushi bombs are bite-sized, and even though the plate comes with 12 pieces total, it really is not that much. My favorite of the four types of bombs was the Spicy Mc Bomb. The kataifi went really well with the rest of the ingredients and was an added pop of sweetness and crunchiness that I really enjoyed! My least favorite was the Mc Low Bomb (the other tuna bomb), which was just too fishy for me. Also *SPOILER ALERT*, their special sauces are really just soy sauce with different amounts of wasabi mixed in. The awesome upcycled measuring spoon ladles led me to believe that the sauces were actually something unique...I was disappointed. I actually enjoyed the gyoza more than I enjoyed the sushi bombs, and I am so glad that the server recommended them. The gyoza were perfectly pan fried - crispy on the bottom but soft and chewy on the top. The filling was delicious, and it was served with both ponzu sauce and chili oil. I would definitely order this if I visit again. I found the restaurant a little too dark for dining - I could barely see three feet in front of my face. However, they keep it tidy, and I appreciated that they kept the restaurant quite toasty for a cold winter day. read more

Interesting ambiance at this restaurant - it is very dark and has two very long tables with attached bench to eat cafeteria/community style. We had a dinner reservation through open table and were able to secure a "prime" end portion of the long table. Service was very kind and welcoming. Ordered via DoorDash and ended up throwing the whole meal away. The sushi rolls were some of the worst I've had. Huge, thick cut of fish that was very chewy and hard to get down. Gave up after a couple of pieces. The pork bun seemed like they took a bun that'd been sitting out and just stuck the pork belly and toppings it in. It was cold and not soft. Easily the worst pork bun I've had. After this I decided to forgo the rest and have something else for dinner. Save your money, time and disappointment. Okay, so my top chef brother brought me here for my birthday dinner and it was AMAZING. Their rice is perfect. I ordered the spicy tuna bowl and gyoza while here. Neither disappointed. The gyoza was definitely the best I've ever had. The tuna was soooo fresh and at $16, very worth it. The egg yolk was delicious and I don't know if I'll ever be able to eat another one without thinking of Momo. Back to the rice. I've never had better white rice in my life. It was soooo good. With the right amount of Mirin. Also, this place was super accommodating for our party of six with two kids under five. They were so patient with the kiddos. I love Momo. Located in Bushwick right next to Roberta's, this place is hipster central. Even so, the food is all excellent and the prices are surprisingly reasonable, making it well worth the trip here and sitting at the communal tables. From the moment you enter, it feels super Brooklyn. It's very dark with candlelit tables, and almost all 20-something girls with tattoos and daddy issues (I know they filmed some scenes of Girls at Roberta's, and wouldn't be surprised if they filmed here too). You are also greeted by Phillip, the jolly Grizzly Adams-looking dude who I think is the owner, and is one of the best things about this place. He is really friendly and welcoming and makes for a memorable and enjoyable experience. He came over throughout, cracking jokes and making sure we were taken care of, and it came across in a nice way, and not annoying as it sometimes can be. Most importantly though, all the food was great: - Rice Croquettes ($7 for 5) Amazing way to start the meal. Filled with rice and cheese, these were really delicious, and not as overwhelming as they sound. They were lightly fried and went down easily. - Party Bomb ($19) This is one of the things everybody gets here, and you should do so too. This is just a sampler of all of the different varieties of "sushi bombs" they have, which are basically just nigiri in a spherical shape. They are all really good, especially the eel one of course, and it's an excellent value, at 12 pieces for just $19. This is the must order here. - Hamachi Roll ($7) and Dragon Roll ($12) We also tried some of the typical rolls, which were pretty good, but nothing special. I would stick to the other more unique stuff here, but these were tasty nonetheless. - Oxtail Udon ($16) This was one of the specials, and every table seemed to have it, which makes sense since it was really excellent. There was a ton of very soft and delicious oxtail and some springy, tasty udon noodles. If this is on offer, it's definitely a good pick. - Chicken Karaage ($9) This came out after we were done with all of the other food, as they fry it fresh and it takes a bit longer. It's definitely worth the wait - it was some of the juiciest karaage I've tried, and was so hot I repeatedly burned my mouth because I just couldn't wait. This place is really great and it seems to always be pretty packed (as Phillip informed us, we were lucky to get in with no wait). The food is definitely excellent, though not as good as some other sushi joints, but it's really the great service and fun atmosphere that really elevate this place to a 5-starrer. This place is really nice. They have great atmosphere and a really cozy vibe. The servers are always friendly and inviting. The food is consistently good. I would honestly recommend anything on the menu. And their beer selection is nice, too. It's a really nice sushi spot if you're in the area. I was excited for this order after reading the yelp reviews but I was quite disappointed. The portion doesn't upset me at all. I wanted to like this dish but it was drowned in dressing and I had to drain it on the side of my plate. Vegan Gyoza - amazing presentation - look at my uploaded picture. They say not to be shallow and judge based on looks but to instead discover the inside. Well, this dish definitely caught my eye, and it was a heck of a choice. The extra crunchy layer with the spicy garnish gave it the home run. It had a flavorful stuffing, not too thick or too thin of a wrapper, not too mushy or hard and the consistency was just perfect. Rolls Ordered: Guacamole, Ramo, Mina, Kitade Doko, Futomaki, Vegan Eel Bomb Roll. I wasn't wowed by these rolls. But for vegan japanese sushi, this is pretty creative. Which is why I ordered all the vegan rolls. If I'm ever in the mood for vegan sushi, I usually hit up Beyond Sushi because nothing beats their sushi. Inari - Wowers. You're thinking about an normal inari until a few seconds later after your first bite - it hits you. A splash of spice then wait for it..what is it? ginger but not too strong....then a few more seconds...bam! More flavors. Talk about a slammin' inari. So my mom wasn't feeling it. She gets car sick and didn't want to eat much so she held off on most of the food. The manager saw this and talk about customer service! She gave us a warm dish on the house! She knew older parents usually prefer warm food over cold so she gave us miso soup and pork curry. My mom loved it. She ate a good chunk of it even though the ride back home was going to be long. Yes, we traveled here just to try this joint out. I didn't take a picture early enough but it comes with mushrooms, egg, white rice sprinkled with peppercorn and scallion, and the main curry pork. Originally we were in the area for Roberta's, but opted to grab some drinks and apps here as we waited. Like Roberta's next door, seating is in communal picnic benches. We ordered the Party Bomb dish and a sashimi plate to share. The sashimi was decent and fresh. Although the concept of Party Bomb seemed cool, the execution faltered as the rice was mushy and each "bomb" fell apart when picked up. The place had an extensive sake menu and so we asked the server for recommendations and he suggested the canned sake which in retrospect sounded cool. But sorry waiter but it tasted like ass...my stomach was lurching while I was sipping it. The other sake we ordered (cannot remember the name for the life of me but it came in a carafe) was smooth and delicious. I've actually never heard of Momo Sushi Shack before in my life until my friend brought it up. I also had no idea it was a "thing" that every person has tried or has wanted to check out. They have an eclectic menu of Japanese small plates and something called the 'sushi bomb'. It's also located in Bushwick . . . . which is enough to make me skeptical as hipsters scare the hella out of me. Should you do it? Yes. Definitely. They have something new on their menu called a takoyaki corn dog. Think your traditional octopus delicious takoyaki stuffed inside of cornmeal on a stick with bonito flakes and japanese mayo. It's one of the best creations God has ever gifted mankind. But I also really really love takoyaki. . . . a lot. The next thing you come in for are probably their pork bao buns. But once you've had a bun, I feel like you've had a bun. They were tasty and the bun was of the perfect squishy to fluffy consistency ratio (I have no idea what I'm talking about, go with me). But the main star are their innovative sushi bombs. They're beautiful to look at. Even more beautiful to eat. Like everyone says, the Party bomb (variety of their main sushi bombs on their menu) is the thing to get for $24. A bit on the steep side for sushi. I'm still unsure how I feel about them because it's so much rice but the fish tasted superior. I feel like I'd have to come back to try a regular maki sushi roll to make a fair analysis. A little additional thing the restaurant does is that they pre-mix the wasabi into the soy sauce. Don't worry, it's not in all of the soy sauces. You have your choice of regular and without any, medium hot, and pretty darn spicy. But they blend it in so well that it magically tastes way better than when I furiously swirl in the wasabi paste. I've been coming to Momo since I moved to Bushwick 3 years ago and it has yet to disappoint. Contrary to some other reviews, I actually prefer Momo to Bozu for the relaxed atmosphere & food preparation. Pro tips: skip the rolls, get the bombs - they are worth it, drink the canned sake, and if they have a bao bun on the specials menu get it! My favorite single piece of sushi I've ever had in my life is the seared salmon piece here. I lived a few blocks away when this spot opened and fell in love then. I've since moves states but came back for a visit and went to Momo and was sooo pleasantly surprised. The interior is the same- simple, clean and comfortable and the food is amazing and even better than I remember. Lots of vegan and veggie options. Their gyoza were out of this world! Like others have said, Momo Sushi Shack is way overpriced. However - it's not overpriced for great or even medium quality sushi, it's over priced for bad quality sushi. The special rolls sounded extremely interesting on the menu and loaded with ingredients and usual flavors, but when the food arrived the rolls were small, unflavorful, and disappointing. For the amount of ingredients listed in each roll on the menu I imagined avocado and fish to be sitting on top or spilling out of the middle, but it was as if there was only one ingredient in the roll instead of 5. Additionally - the fish was definitely not fresh or high quality. Thank GOD we didn't get the bombs because the people next to us got them and they looked like a complete rip off. I should also add that I am not a sushi snob, at home I am a regular to $1 sushi places, which taste loads better than this (with larger portions too!) Don't waste your money!! read more
