Heard really good reviews about this place, but I think it's mediocre. Probably would have given it 3 stars normally, but due to price (it's quite expensive for what it is), downgrading to 2 stars. It wasn't a terrible meal, but nothing special. I didn't absolutely love anything. The spicy tuna hand roll kind tasted like canned tuna, perhaps it was the seasoning, not sure, but it was just OK. The sushi bombs are ok, $19 for 12 pieces of sushi. Too expensive, considering the rice to fish ratio. Way too much rice, in comparison to a tiny/thin piece of fish. They still have good flavor, but just too much rice and $$ I did like the yuzu as the palate cleanser. It's sweet and refreshing. The service was also ok. I'd come back here if my reservation to Roberta's didn't work out, otherwise probably won't come back here. read more

Don't be a tool! This place is the bomb! Super fresh & flavorful sushi! And make sure you try the Black Cod (called Saikyo Yaki or Miso Black Cod at other Japanese spots). It's amazing! Pretty sure that Nobu put this on the map but no matter - Momo has a KILLER version and you're a total dickhole if you don't get it. Fucking delicious! The space itself is small, tight & communal with long, shared benches. Might not sound like your thing (personally I pretty much hate everybody) but I end up chatting with people every time I'm there and it's actually pretty cool. Plus Roberta's is around the corner and now they have takeout pizza by the slice. Hard to beat this block now! If only they would bring back Eastern District Art Gallery next door... read more

Places like Momo Sushi Shack are the reason why I love living in Bushwick. Like most of the excellent restaurants here, you wouldn't know what's inside just by walking by on the street, which is probably for the better- I don't want to share! Nevertheless, I'm actually embarrassed that it took me this long to come to Momo, as I walk past it on my way to the train literally every day. Now, I can't wait to come back. There was no wait at 7pm on a Saturday night, but the communal tables inside filled up quickly while we were eating. Momo is great for groups if you get there early enough, but the atmosphere is still dark and cozy enough for a date. More importantly, the food is great for sharing and seriously *da bomb*. With that segue (I know, I'm the worst)...we tried: Party Bomb - a sampler of all of their sushi "bombs," which are basically nigiri shaped into a ball. These were great, but there was a lot of rice compared to the fish and they weren't super exciting. Next time, I would probably just order our favorite out of the sampler on its own, the Spicy McBomb (tuna, cucumber, spicy mayo, katafi). Momo Salad - a huuuge portion of greens and seasonal vegetables in a really delicious Asian dressing. I could have eaten this on its own for my meal and been completely stuffed. The salad is topped with some nice crispy shallots for texture and was super fresh. Pork Belly - this was probably the best thing I've eaten all week. Whatever you at Momo Sushi Shack, I don't care- just order this and thank me later. The pork belly was literally falling apart as we tried to shovel it in our mouths, and so incredibly tender. It's steeped in this really nice soy sauce, which I probably would have drank if it was socially acceptable. Oh well, maybe next time. Like others have said, Momo Sushi Shack is way overpriced. However - it's not overpriced for great or even medium quality sushi, it's over priced for bad quality sushi. The special rolls sounded extremely interesting on the menu and loaded with ingredients and usual flavors, but when the food arrived the rolls were small, unflavorful, and disappointing. For the amount of ingredients listed in each roll on the menu I imagined avocado and fish to be sitting on top or spilling out of the middle, but it was as if there was only one ingredient in the roll instead of 5. Additionally - the fish was definitely not fresh or high quality. Thank GOD we didn't get the bombs because the people next to us got them and they looked like a complete rip off. I should also add that I am not a sushi snob, at home I am a regular to $1 sushi places, which taste loads better than this (with larger portions too!) Don't waste your money!! read more

Great attentive service too Located in a desolate, industrial area of east Williamsburg, the area had a neat little coffee shop next door, a vintage shop ( i believe) and a hearty bunch of euro hipsters. I decided to come back here last week (a few months after my first visit) since I was in the neighborhood with a friend that had not tried this place yet. My friend really loved veggies, so we started off with: -Udon salad (special) = Not good. There was not enough greens and the dressing tasted funny after a few bites. They definitely did not spend enough time thinking this dish out. -Ramo roll = Also a diappointment. The choice of vegetables they used did not go well together at all. I do not remember every vegetable that was in that roll, but the ones that stood out (in a bad way) was the bell pepper and corn. The only items that tasted good that night was of course their bombs, their roasted tuna hand roll (special), and the dungeness crab roll with avocado and mango (special). Service was TERRIBLE. Some sous chef was there that night, so he and his date got all of the attention. We were barely checked on, even though we were sitting right next to them! The owner came to serve them a new dish every five minutes and took the time to explain every creation to them, but could not even take away an empty plate from our table. Our waitress too would constantly check up on them without them having to flag her down. I understand that certain people will get special treatment, which is fine, but neglecting the rest of the customers for one party is absurd. We could have probably walked out without them even noticing, but I could never bring myself to do something like that. I'm all for customer service. I tip according to the service I received. If you do the bare minimum (refilling water/checking up once or twice) = 15%. If service was more attentive then 18-20% and up. I cannot even recall the last time I have tipped below 15%, but last night I did. Yes, it was really that bad. I was really disappointed with the food and service the second time around and am torn with the rating, but after this, I cannot help but give them 3 stars. Some of the freshest fish I've had in my life. Way better than other sushi places in Brooklyn or Manhattan. A true hidden gem.

I hoped that my healthy obsession with this place would slowly wane... But then I "happened" to move to an apartment around the corner......................... (it was calling me in the dark recesses of the night to come closer....) I blame the Pork Betty. I am addicted to pork belly anything. Last week I ate a pork belly dish four times. I currently have 2lbs of pork belly in my fridge waiting to be cooked. I think I've established that I love me some pork belly. Momo's Pork Betty is the BEST pork belly I've ever eaten. Let me give you a play by play: 1. Upon first taste, you're hit with the strong flavors of soy sauce and all of the other infused goodness that is Momo's ridiculoussss sauces. 2. Then, out of no where, like a curve-ball, the pork belly literally melts in your mouth and your mouth is full of this sensual richness that's both calming and invigorating. All the five star reviews are absolutely positively true. Oh my goodness. This is one of those places that I reluctantly review, because I want to be selfish and keep it a secret. But it looks like the cat is already out of the bag. As it should be! A group of friends and I went to Momo for a friend's birthday on the suggestion of a friend in our party and it was a friend's Mother who decided we should definitely go. Best decision ever! The owner is friendly and introduces himself to everyone. He's VERY knowledgeable about Japanese food and is obviously passionate about the food he serves. For our large parties, he suggested we order a chef's tasting menu - which was the best deal ever. You pick a price point and they just keep bringing out their favorites. And their favorites are FANTASTIC. The table's highlights: Tofu Salad Hotate Punch Hamachi Negi King Crab Roll Pork Betty Spicy Mcbomb Butter Thyme Poached Salmon - I have a feeling this isn't on the menu, but if you can find it or can ask, doooo it. Four ppl had a party bomb, fried chicken, two pitchers of Sapporo, spicy tuna bowl, salmon bowl, hand rolls. The service is completely off. The server would ask 'is everything okay' then walked away even without waiting for us to answer. The server or the kitchen forgot the order and we waited probably 20 min wondering what is going on. Then the server asked if we are waiting for more food. Just nothing about this dinner was good. All the food was barely mediocre. Nothing was great. We found this place on Yelp, and had high hopes due to the good reviews. So on one weekend afternoon, we ventured all the way out to Williamsburg to have lunch here. We ordered the scallop appetizer, uni on salmon, sashimi platter, pork belly and party bomb. The quality and taste of the food that we received was not impressive. They do get some points for being creative, but it seemed that they did that at the expense of taste. The pork belly and party bomb were particularly disappointing, as those were both highly recommended items based on reviews. We were left scratching our heads as to why others gave such high ratings. The sashimi quality is average and the cooked food was also not memorable. Momo slaps and anyone that tells you different is wrong. Yeah, it's kind of overpriced, but so is literally every other restaurant in this neighborhood. Rents by the Morgan stop are insane, and you're paying them by eating there. Not that every restaurant in that neighborhood is good--most of them suck. But Momo's legit. But the food here is great. The bombs are the best choice for sushi here, and the pork betty with an egg is sublime. I've also done the omikase here and was floored. They made a wild mushroom risotto that was mind blowing, amidst courses of incredible sashimi etc. read more

I can't believe that I haven't written a review for Momo yet. Whenever people ask me where I love to eat, Momo makes it into the top five. Once you step inside, you feel like you're in a concrete shack in the woods. It's pretty tight and comfortable inside, and I like the simplicity of the long wooden tables and benches. Like the other reviews mention, you should be prepared to sit next to other folks, and you should also be prepared to wait if you're coming with a large party. Rus and I usually dine here and rarely have to wait for more than a few minutes for a table. Here are our favorites: The Pickle Plate A refreshing plate of pickled veggies. The little tomatoes are so juicy when you bite into them. I love starting off the meal with this! Seaweed Salad Another great meal starter. Perfect to split between two people. Top it with a squeeze of fresh lemon (ask them for it). The Pork Betty So good, so hot! Don't shove a whole piece into your mouth. Very rich, especially when you get it with egg. I also love the wasabi cream that they top it with. Karage! Crunchy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. I love this Japanese take on comfort food. I could eat a whole plate of this stuff if given the chance, but it makes a great dish to share with others. Who doesn't like fried chicken? Handmade Gyoza So good, just like when you make it at home. These dumplings just taste so fresh and delicious. The ingredients are simple, but so good. The Oyako Roll I don't usually like sushi with cooked fish, but the roasted salmon on this roll is some salty goodness. How good? We usually get not one, but two (okay, sometimes three) orders of this when we visit. It's delicious. The Party Bomb These are fun, but very heavy on the rice. I'm honestly not a huge fan of the "bomb" style sushi. That said, if you're new to sushi, or entertaining a friend that's not big on sushi, this might be a good place to start. The specials here are also banging. We try to order at least one of their specials every time we visit. The steak we had here was spectacular, as was the risotto. There are some talented and imaginative chefs at Momo Sushi Shack. So much so, that it's one of my favorite restaurants ever. If you're in the neighborhood, give this place a try. read more

I would never have discovered this place if I wasn't in the area to pick up some fabric from a friend's place. She recommended this place for a quick bite. I was really sketchy at first because it was so dark and hidden but for sure it is a hidden gem! Perhaps one of the most unique sushi places I've been to. Besides the fact that waiters dress incredibly casual and its inside an old garage, the chefs really know how to make a good maki. We ordered a couple of different ones plus a Japanese-ceviche style dish with assorted sashimi mixed with yuzu. absolutely delicious and refreshing with the fruit. Pretty much all the rolls we got had a unique element to it. We loved the crunchy roll and kani roll but I can't remember right now what's in it besides friend tempura. Avoid this place like the plague. My boyfriend and I have been here several times a few years ago. The food was GREAT, we would drive from New Jersey to get it because we were craving it. However, we decided to stop in before Robertas and get a quick snack. We walked in and there was a woman behind the counter on her phone. I remember their "Cash only" policy and wanted to make sure it was still in place since I hadn't gone back in so long. I said hello to the woman and asked if they take card, to which she blankly shook her head yes. We sat down and as she walked over with menus, we said hello. Being a salmon nigiri fiend, I thought the pink bombs (salmon) would be my favorite. I ended up having to fight my friend for the crispy tuna bombs. I could literally eat 20 of these. so amaze-balls. they bring you PRE-MIXED wasabi soy sauce. not sure why this is such a big deal to me, but I really appreciated this touch. The sake "carafes" are closer to full bottles. More than enough to get your buzz on. Our server was super quirky: part magician, part card dealer? Had a very odd (but entertaining!) way of placing all of our food, chopsticks, etc. onto the table. Staff all very sushi-savvy. The restaurant is great. Super low-key and bizarrely decorated. To me, the area felt quite shady considering I was driving to idk where. This place is a hidden gem and it is easily to be missed. I went in the afternoon and the inside was very dark but felt cozy with the long wooden benches. If this place gets crowded, you may have to be eating side by side with strangers. The sushi was not the freshest to me but it was still good. My friends got the curry and it wasn't too spicy so that would've been perfect for me. After settling down in the nearby hostel in Brooklyn, my stomach started grumbling for something good. Walked in and was warmly welcomed by the young man working named Mark. At first I did want sushi, but then Mark passed me the seasonal menu and the first thing to catch my eyes was the goat ramen. The broth was delicious and savory, there were bits of eggplant that I loved. The goat had a curry like texture and was mildly spicy but not too hot; seasoned to perfection. Well for myself at least. Momo Sushi Shack, although on the pricey side, is one of my absolute favorite delivery go-tos. I NEED my Uni Mazemen. A ramen noodle dish with tomato cream sauce, cod roe and edamame, topped with luscious Uni (sea urchin). So yummy that I crave it consecutively some nights and had to have it three times in one week recently. Ordering from Momo Sushi Shack is pure joy. The delivery is on time with my exact order. Not usually piping hot but hot or warm, never cold. And I can't think of a time when the service was rude, late, or mistake-prone. I'm curious to try the sushi and vegan options here but every time that I almost order one of those, the Uni Mazemen magically appears in my cart, and I end up fantasizing about it or rather remembering how good it is, removing everything else from my cart, and ordering only the Uni Mazemen. What makes this dish sooo good? All of the quality components add something different texturally but somehow they all seem to melt in your mouth. Even the edamame is so tender that you barely notice it. But it brings a freshness, a green-ess, to the general savoriness and sultry style of this dish. It's like a hush-hush affair that I only crave for dinner because of its richness. Uni Mazemen is my tasty little secret. read more

Creative sushi dishes. I had mixed vegetables with cilantro roll. It came with three different types of soy sauce: regular, med spicy (wasabi), and whoa! I dipped my chop stick in a bit of the third and stopped breathing for a second. I must have made a face, because the waiter immediately refilled my water. I also had the rice balls, which had a nice flavor to them. No additional crazy sauces necessary. Wasn't that expensive, but wasn't filling either. I didn't want to wait for more food to come out (the first two items took maybe 20 min), so I just stopped for some pizza on Bushwick before heading home. YUM YUM YUM! What a fun place! While its not 4 stars, it certainly a solid 3.5 I loved the Party bomb - my favorite was the spicy tuna crunch. The tofu salad is also VERY VERY good. Totally unassuming and you would never expect it to be bursting with flavor but this was hands down our favorite dish of the night. We also had the pork belly which my husband loved. I'm not usually a fan of pork belly but also found Momo's version tasty Would definitely visit again if I'm in the neighborhood and can't wait to try the sister restaurants. 5 star sushi. Freshest I have ever had and very unique menu. It's not your run of the mill sushi spot. This place is one of a kind. Everything from their jovial, overall sporting American owner who also doubles as the host to the small loading dock looking space to the long communal tables. I really enjoyed the change from the norm. Loved the 3 free homemade soy sauces from regular to spicy. Spicy mayo was best I ever had, made with real Japanese mayo. It was hard to pick a favorite sushi because they were all equally great, but I would recommend trying one made with guacamole. We were seated to a group of loud and annoying girls. I highly recommend the middle sauce in the 3-pack the waiter puts on the table-- one of them is super spicy wasabi-based, and the other is simple soy sauce, and the middle is a spicy good in-between. If you're with a small group, split the Party Bomb so you can try a few of the different ones! Overall, a little pricey for sushi but such great taste I could look past the dent in my wallet. After failing to get seated at Bozu on an impromptu trip to Williamsburg, I somehow came to Momo sushi shack since they had availability. The shack is pretty hidden, they literally use camouflage print to " hi(ghtlight)de" it. It also didn't help that I came during the evening so it's even harder to spot. The moment I walked in, the place was dark and rap was playing. "This place is so Bushwick" I thought. The rabbit taxidermy was pretty funny and so was their extra + on their sanitation grade of A(+). I was seated at a communal table and greeted by our server Philip who was pretty helpful in answering all our questions. After scouring on yelp tips and looking at the menu, I decided to go for the party bomb and heritage pork betty with an extra egg. However I was brought to a panic when I realized it was cash only. I'm used to places that take plastic, I wasn't sure if I had enough but luckily my date did so we were fine. The pork betty was the bomb diggity! My eyes lit up the moment it touched my mouth. The first bite was love and it was the best bite of all. The pork belly literally melted on my tongue and it was oozing with flavor. The sauce was so good, I finished every drip of it with my rice. The party bomb was interesting, I've never had sushi like that before and I loved how the dome shaped pieces fit perfectly in my mouth. My favorite pieces were the mc low bomb and pink bomb. The una eel bomb wasn't bad either, I usually avoid eating eel because of the briny and fishy taste but for some reason it was actually good here. The party bombs are served with premixed soy sauces that comes in three ways, one with non wasabi, one with a little wasabi and one with a lot wasabi. I was still a bit hungry afterward so I scoured the menu for more food, I was shocked to find out that their wagyu beef nigiri ran for $15 a pop!!!!!! They offer maine uni nigiri for $9 and hokkaido uni for $12.. I really wanted to order it but decided to hold back since that would be nearly half my bill plus Ki Sushi offers hokkaido uni for $9. I ended up getting the spicy scallop hand roll. The roll was okay, not as spectacular as their best selling dishes but not horrible either. I'm taking one star off because their cash only policy which is really inconvenient. In defense, food isn't exactly dirt cheap here and who would carry around $100 for dinner?? P.S. I also realized their menu was incredibly similar to Bozu's, I later found out through Google that the restaurants are owned by the same guy. Who would've guessed right? Thank you Yelpers! Came here because Roberta's had a 3 hour wait and was just about to drive away when I noticed that Momo Sushi Shack was so highly rated and just around the corner. Note - cash only! I met Philip and he is a friendly, nice guy. The tables are long benches that you share with other diners. Definitely get the pork betty - it was great! Also ordered the Chilean sea bass, Wagyu beef, and the sushi bomb, which was more than enough food for 3 of us. The sea bass was good and the sushi was fresh. The Wagyu beef was a good deal at $15 and the wasabi mashed potatoes that came with it were great. Service was fast and friendly. Overall it was a good palce to eat. read more

Have been here about three times and have had very positive experience each and every time. The staff is polite and helpful and if they are not rushed will talk to you extensively about the restaurant, food etc. It is currently my friends absolute favorite sushi place. The menu is far more exotic and interesting than a normal sushi place with many interesting new things plus fresh Uni right from the urchin. The seating is relatively communal where you sit on long benches with other people and the decor is rustic and plain. When we went there was no sign with the name of the restaurant on the outside but it was packed. This is a Bushwick treasure! We cannot recommend it enough nor wait to go back. read more

Momo Sushi Shack has been on my to eat list for quite a while, so I got their bomb set of four options for lunch the other day. The price is slightly above average as the restaurant markets itself as high quality, but the fish and sushi quality itself was just okay. The tuna and salmon sushi were presented seasoned and chopped up on top of a small ball of rice, which is cute I guess. If you're looking for superb quality sushi in the neighborhood and are willing to shell out a bit more, try Ume. read more
