Our server Lance was all you could dream about. He was so detailed oriented and checked on us throughly. We got there and the place is open and gorgeous. Well lit for a romantic night or out with some friends. The food came out together which I love. The boa buns were warm and soft was ordered for the table. The general t'so has some kick to it, as to where the pineapple adds some sweetness to modulate the spice. The black pepper steak was seasoned to perfection and was told it was cooked to softness as I was told (I don't eat beef ). Crab fried rice was taken home and devoured by the time I walked in. Birthday Dinner! I chose The Monkey King as the spot to celebrate my nieces birthday & a celebration it was. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the hostess. We sat at the bar, ordered a few drinks until our table was ready. After about 10mins we were shown to our table. Our waitress quickly came there after to introduce herself along with walk us through the menu. She made great recommendations regarding portion sizes and how much food we should be ordering for a party of 3. We ordered sooo much food... scallion pancakes, Peking Duck, char siu, pan fried chicken dumplings, stir fried Bok choy, roasted duck fat fried rice. Although everything was good the char siu and duck were my standouts! So flavorful and perfectly portioned for the 3 of us to share. Our waitress was amazing! New years Eve Eve! I wish Yelp had half stars. I'd give it a 3.5. We made reservations for 3 and unfortunately the 3rd was running too late. We arrived on time amd were seated at the bar. This particular night they were short staffed and that did put a damper on things in the beginning. We didn't actually get seated until after an hour. The staff just seemed overwhelmed and not really attentive. Had to wave down staff for updates. The food was good though. We tried the beef chow fun, shrimp toast. Garlic chicken. Chicken pot stickers, marinated cucumber, carb fried rice and the char su. The char su was great but I wanted it served hot. My favorite things were the shrimp toast with that curry sauce and the crab rice. The beef was a bit too salty for me. The drink I wanted wasn't available apparently. The ingredients ran out. He said he would make me a French 75 and.. I hated it. The place is cute. Weird how the door placement is. Confusing to get in. There was no one in the front to greet me. I just walked over to my friend at the bar. I did like a coat area especially since it was freezing that day. All in all glad I tried it. Not sure if I'd rush back. Nothing was WOW for me . 5 stars. This place hit all of my expectations. Great playlist. The restaurant is more spacious than I realized as well. You can certainly host a large group here. All of the staff were extremely warm and attentive. I wish I remembered our server's name, but she was wonderful alongside all of the others that came to check on us. Note: all of the food items are brought out separately, so keep that in mind. There was a delicious scallop option with bacon I think on top. Delicious I normally do not order chicken when I go out, but the crispy garlic fried chicken was out of this world. The skin on the chicken was fried too perfection and not like a crispy fried chicken, but still delicious and the marinade really made it down to the bone. My favorite thing was the fried Sichuan oyster mushrooms. But if you have a sensitivity to peppercorn, keep in mind this dish contains it. The only item on the menu I was slightly disappointed by was the general tso shrimp. The flavor was amazing, but the texture of the shrimp with the breading on the shrimp was a little off. The vibe here is great--low lighting and a smaller, more intimate space. I started with their version of an old-fashioned, the Atelier. Wasn't really my thing since it was heavy on the bitters, but that could just be the bartender's pour. Food-wise, everything hit. The char siu was amazing--super flavorful with a nice crust and juicy inside. The fried oyster mushrooms were probably my favorite dish of the night. They legit taste like calamari. I'd recommend asking for a dipping sauce to go with them. For the main, I went with the lobster lo mein and wow... absolutely incredible. Flavorful, filling, and honestly big enough to share with 2-3 people. It came with green beans on the side which rounded it out nicely. Service was on point. The food was undeniably excellent, but unfortunately the level of service and overall hospitality fell far below the standard one would expect from a restaurant positioning itself as a refined dining experience. I arrived at 5:55 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. reservation and, despite the dining room being completely empty, was told by the hostess that I could not be seated until my entire party had arrived. While I understand that some restaurants maintain this policy, its rigid enforcement under those circumstances felt unnecessary and set an unwelcoming tone from the outset. My guest was only a few minutes away. Once seated, the experience did little to improve. We ordered a bottle of wine and four shared plates, yet I had to locate our server myself in order to have the wine poured, as it had been left sitting at the bar. Service throughout the meal felt inattentive and oddly rushed. Most notably, we were asked whether our food could be packed up while we were still in the middle of eating, which was both surprising and inappropriate. Dessert was never offered. The most disappointing moment came at the end of the evening. After paying a $200 bill, inclusive of an automatic 20% gratuity, we were informed at 7:30 p.m. that we would need to move to the bar in order to finish our bottle of wine because the table was needed for the next seating. Being asked to vacate the table before we had even finished our meal and wine was, frankly, unacceptable. Adding to the frustration, by the time we finished our wine at 8:15 p.m., those seats were still empty -- making the request feel not only inhospitable, but entirely unnecessary. A restaurant may serve beautiful food, but genuine hospitality is what defines the full experience. Here, the kitchen performed well, but the front-of-house did not. Our family took an hour and half trip to this restaurant since it was promoted as a Bengali Chinese fusion place. We made reservation in advance to ensure our spot. Upon arrival we were seated in our table within minutes. The place appeared modern and slick, cool dining tables and a dining bar that is little below the restaurant floor. But I found the restaurant's ambiance too dark, it was hard to see anything around the restaurant. The iPhone taking all the pictures in night mode, that's how dark it was. The menu was via QR code but the restaurant had no reception for Verizon. I asked them for wifi and they gave me one that had network problems. So I had to walk outside multiple times to load the menu. Once I read thru the menu I was disappointed to see it was full of regular Chinese appetizers and entrees, nothing Bengali about any of them. We ordered whole bunch of items, starting with the soup dumplings. The soup dumplings barely had any soup, I counter, about five drops came of each dumpling. Shrimp shau mai and pearl dumplings both were basic. The vegetable dishes like pickled cucumbers, eggplant with garlic sauce and boiled bok choy were actually far better good dishes. Chicken wings were also good. The best dish of the night was the lamb ribs. They were soft, juicy, tender, had amazing taste. But it took them an hour to bring the dish out. We finished all our other food, and then waited 10-15 minutes more to finally see the lamb dish arrive at our table. The service was pretty good. Our server was very polite and friendly. The staff cordially greeted me for father's day. Although the dinner was fine, I felt like for the price we paid the dishes could have been far better quality and quantity. The menu offers enough options for all tastebuds and the trendy decor sets the vibe for a night out that's less on the casual side. The crab fried rice was meh but the chicken was good. Cocktails were a bit pricey but that's par for the course at every dining establishment. I wasn't a fan of the specialty cocktail I adventureouly trieda so if you're not peaked by the description just go with what your know (i.e. an old fashioned). Service was meh. I came here for dinner on a weekday and had an alright time. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted with an open space with some seating, a sleek bar, and then the restaurant seating in the back. Service here was overall pretty quick and nice. The biggest thing that I wanted to note though was that they are pretty strict on their 90 minute dining limit, which I wasn't a fan of. As we went on a weekday where there were visibly many open seats, and to be constantly told or reminded of the dining limit felt abrasive and made us feel rushed. If we were given the option to move to the bar or something (ie. if they needed the table for another reservation), then it may have made sense. If we were to solely talk about the food then I would say that it was great. We got the cucumber salad, the peking duck, and the beef chow fun. Everything was delicious and I would have been able to finish each of those by myself (maybe not at the same time though haha). Portions were good, and I would definitely recommend each of these dishes. I had previously went to Monkey King when it was in its soft launch and twice afterwards. It has been months since I have returned. I was going to do a take out order but since I was waiting a while to do another activity elsewhere, I decided to stay and I was accepted as a solo walk in. I sat at the bar which is an interesting oval shape. One side is dedicated to people getting only drinks while the other is for people who are eating as well. Their dine in order is accessed through a QR code. I ordered the char siu, the duck fat fried rice and the green beans. My favorite is the green beans. There are really flavorful and have a great crunch. The chat siu was sweet and tender. The service was attentive and made sure that I and the people around me was updated on items on the menu (someone next to me was told in advance about the lack of ribs that night) What someone coming to the restaurant should be aware of is the fact that all checks will have an automatic gratuity of 20%. This is a relatively new change as of 4 months ago (I asked). I have no problem with restaurants having automatic gratuity even if for parties smaller than 4. But if you do a walk in like myself, you wouldn't know about this policy unless someone told you. As of 10.22.2025, the online menu didn't reflect this change and I found out only when I saw my receipt. On the Resy website it does mention it on their reservation page. But nothing in the restaurant itself or their general website. I would recommend that they have it either on the paper where they have the QR code or in text on the online menu after someone scans the QR code. So overall while I had a decent time, it is better geared for 2 or more people. For solo, I would recommend take out. read more

I've had The Monkey King bookmarked for some time now, so I quickly accepted my friends invitation to have dinner here. Inside is really cute and makes for a lovely date night or girls night out. The bar is the 1st thing you see upon entry, and it is gorgeous. You can have an equally enjoyable experience just sitting there, which we did for our first round, before getting seated at our table. For drinks, we tried the serpent's tail, as well as the monkey king. They were similar in taste but the monkey king was our favorite. It was refreshing and sweet, but not too sweet. For food, we tried the fried sichuan oyster mushrooms, black pepper steak, general tso's shrimp, stir-fried pea shoots with garlic and roasted duck-fat fried rice. Everything was soooo yummy! The Monkey King has it all: effortlessly chic decor, intimate lighting, relaxed yet polished vibes, great service, and deliciously well-executed dishes. Char siu - A scaled up version of the char siu and rice dishes I get from roast meat shops. It was juicy and went well with the ginger scallion sauce. I felt a little dirty paying so much for this when I can get a meal-sized portion for $8-ish, but tasty nevertheless. Cumin lamb ribs - Absurdly fall-off-the-bone tender. I could've used more of an infused spicy cumin flavor, but it was still delightful. Wok-fried string beans - These were perfectly seasoned with a nice crisp snap. I've long been a fan of smoked tofu, and it was put to good use here. Roasted duck-fat fried rice - I remember loving this during the event, and it held up. The duck flavor is so rich and prevalent. XO crab fried rice - Mmm mmm mmm. My favorite dish of the night. The crab flavor is infused in every morsel. They don't mess around with their fried rice options, whew. My experience at The Monkey King was amazing. I decided to go here for my birthday dinner. I was happy that they held my reservation for me even though I was running late. We were told that the portions were meant for sharing so we ordered a few small plates and then a few large plates. We ordered the Char Siu, and Crabcake Shumai for our small plates and for the large plates we ordered the Black Pepper Steak, General Tso Shrimp, Crab Fried Rice, and Wok Fried String Beans. All of the food was enough to share with 3 ppl. Everything was so tasty and well portioned. I think my favorites were the steak bites, string beans and the shrimp. They also give you options to pick from for the birthday cake which is an extra $17 but it is well worth it. I went with the Kaya Toast Cake which is coconut sponge layers with Kaya jam filling and vanilla Russian buttercream. It was so good. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very cozy and moody. My boyfriend tried to order a D'USSÉ and cranberry, and somehow the bar didn't even have cranberry juice... seriously? On top of that, the prices felt way too high for what we got. I recently celebrated my mother's birthday here and, up until the end, had a lovely experience. Unfortunately, the way the restaurant handled table timing completely undermined it. From the moment we sat down, there was a noticeable sense of being rushed--encouraged to order quickly, plates cleared quickly, boxes wrapped quickly. It soon became clear why. At the 90-minute mark, we were asked to leave--not gently guided or given a thoughtful heads-up, but directly told we needed to get up--first by staff, then again by the owner just minutes later. At that point, two members of our party were still in the restroom and others were still finishing drinks. We hadn't even had the opportunity to order dessert. When I expressed that we would leave as soon as our party was back together, the handling became even more uncomfortable. When I shared my disappointment, the owner pointed to the 90-minute table limit noted in the reservation confirmation. But hospitality isn't just about policy--it's about how you manage it. There's a meaningful difference between pacing a table and making guests feel pushed out, especially when they've just spent ~$500 celebrating a special occasion. As a business owner myself, I understand the pressures of turnover and waiting guests. But the solution can't be creating a second set of unhappy customers to solve the first. Strong operations account for natural overages and build in grace--especially at the end of a meal. I'll also add that I don't typically leave negative reviews, precisely because I understand how impactful they can be for a business. No dining experience is perfect. But this experience was handled in a way that warrants sharing. In 35+ years of dining across cities and countries, I've never been asked to leave mid-experience like this. It's okay.... Service was Amazing let's start there. The host and bartenders are outstanding. The food fell flat. The hype behind the restaurant def makes the expectation higher than what you receive. Nothing blew us away and we tried a good amount of the menu. The drinks however were satisfying we had the strawberry basil mock-tail but added tequila to it and it was awesome. The ambiance is cool, chattering and chill dim lit vibes. Great drinks, great food, cute little hidden spot in Brooklyn. Came here on a Sunday evening for dinner. Highly recommend making a reservation and we were able to make one for the same day, which worked out perfectly. Drinks were great, can't remember what we got, but didn't have any complaints! The decor and bar area are super cute inside as well What we got: - scallion pancakes - these were good but more fried than your standard but paired well with the rest of the food - crab cake shumai - great flavor and nice and creamy inside - fried oyster mushrooms - loved this, but I am biased and love mushrooms, overall cooked well and great flavor -double garlic eggplant - always love a vegetable dish cooked well with flavor and this hit the spot - duck-fat fried rice - very flavorful and well balanced, paired well with the rest of the dishes read more

I've been to The Monkey King 3 times in the past year. The first time, I chose it as a going away dinner for a friend (we were catching a show at a nearby venue as well), the second time a friend chose it for a birthday dinner, and the most recent time some friends from out of town chose it as we were seeing a show nearby as well. Each time, it's been great and delivered on providing a flavorful a filling experience. We shared plates on each occasion, and each time I've returned I demanded that we have the shrimp toast. They are so unique and unlike anything I've had before. I've also returned to order the cocktail the Immortal Peach. Other must-haves: the cumin lamb ribs, the bao buns, all of the veggie sides, the crab fried rice. They also have a ton of sauces you can add on ($1 each).
