Was good but pot pie didn't have much chicken at all and was a little bland. The carrots and mashed potatoes were good. I wasn't crazy about the gravy though. Scones? I would lean more towards it being a donut. Wish the honey butter had more honey and wasn't so cold...I know it's butter but you know people do still leave a stick of butter out of the fridge. If ever driving through again I would go back and try the fried chicken. read more

As soon as we sat down the excuses started, our server was more interested in visiting and taking care of people she knew rather than focusing on the task at hand when busy. Customers who arrived 10 mins after us....sitting right next to us, with the SAME server got their food 20 mins before we did...even worse, they sent it back to get redone and got it back before we could even talk to the server. It wasn't just us, another couple never get their food and they arrived before we did! The biggest slap was it never dawned on our server that we were still waiting..even AFTER SHE SERVED THE PEOPLE WHO CAME IN AFTER US....SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO US! Also, several servers who worked in the same area all ignored us untill we spoke up loudly and complained. I don't know if the food was worth it and I never will. I travel through the area often and will share my experience with others....eat in Manti or Richfield. AN apology would have been nice.....worst experience EVER at any resturant and i'm 62.....Good Luck! read more

If you are road weary, hungry and need some simple home cooked food, this is your place. Steaks, fried chicken are mediocre but the mashers and gravy are good. The salad bar has oldish iceberg lettuce from a bag. We did not try their pie which looks like their specialty. The service is great. Driving driving driving when a sign appears "best food in town" *reality check* "only restaurant in town", but next door to the Pawn Shop/ Tanning Salon, and the Movie Rental/ Pizza parlor, I had to wonder why Mom's Cafe didn't have a sign that read "Mom's Cafe/ Bookstore". Every business in this town was two-fold, and there was even a typewriter repair shop...who still owns a typewriter? I digress. We enter and head towards the back, where a huge table of truck drivers were taking up 3-4 tables. Conversations immediately overheard: "That's what people's sister's are for" "He choked me until I was blue" We sit and peruse the menu while a man with his name embroidered into his belt eats his lunch. Why did I notice his belt, you ask? Because the knife that was attached to his belt was distracting me. Total recall to the film "Pulp Fiction". Even after reading on the menu that Mom's boasted the best fish & chips, and that many celebrities had eaten here, we decide to order a grilled cheese and a BLT. You can't really screw those sandwiches up. Or so I thought. My BLT was just fine, outside of the toast which scarred the roof of my mouth, it was filling. The grilled cheese on the other hand...this would be the recipe for the grilled cheese we received: 2 pieces stale wonder bread 1 slice American cheese place bread in toaster when bread is warm, remove from toaster, add slice of cheese, serve booooo This is the topper: as I was finishing my BLT, a woman came rushing out of the restroom (after quite a long visit) and shuffled directly to the kitchen window and excitedly stated, "Whoever made that bean soup..." and gave the thumbs up to the cooks. Eww. this is pretty much a middle-of-nowhere whole in the wall with standard middle of nowhere foods. Fried, iceberg lettuce is considered a salad, and high fructose corn syrup is the first ingredient in pretty much everything. (esp. that 'honey butter' they serve with the deep fried disk of dough) I don't think they know what a scone is either. Anywhere they would consider the deep friend dough you receive as an elephant ear or dough-boy. The servers there acted like it was a huge inconvenience to serve us. Really, it is time for people to get over the quaintness factor and take a look at the Emperor...she is wearing no clothes. Every vegetable in the place came from a can. Every ingredient on the salad bar except the iceberg lettuce came in a can. While on road trips we like to patronize local eateries. We chose to take the few extra miles to go to Moms. The menu was a predictable selection of sandwiches, burgers, and home style fare. The food itself was not fresh or wholesome. Most I the items came out of a can. The only thing home made were the pies which were disappointing to be quite generous. My car almost overheated twice on the stretch of I-70 from Grand Mesa to I-15, and Salina, UT represented the first stop for gas in the southern Utah desert. Mom's was a welcome relief from the dry, August heat that nearly baked my car into oblivion. My two friends and I all ordered country fried steak, something that seemed appropriate in the Utah desert for some odd reason. While I've had better country fried steak, it was still pretty damned good considering all we had to eat since leaving New York were Subway sandwiches, Rockstar energy drinks, beef jerky and Jack Daniels (expect for the driver, no Fear and Loathing style activities this day in age). The fries were made of real potatoes and the service was friendly. If I'm ever in Salina again, I will make sure to not stuff myself and try some desert. read more

After looking forward to our return to Mom's after a 3 year hiatus, we were horribly disappointed in this most recent experience. We arrived at 1045 on a Sunday morning and sat at a booth. Everyone around us was eating breakfast. We were looking forward to having Denver Omelets, and after waiting 30 minutes for our surley and dour server to take our order, we asked her for a breakfast menu. She shouted over her shoulder as she hustled away from us that the had stopped serving breakfast. WTF? What place stops serving b'fast before 11am on a Sunday? Yes, this place is in the middle of nowhere. Yes, the town itself is a dusty backwater that looks like most everyone has left. Yes, their scones with honey butter are simply the most sinful and delicious thing you can eat for breakfast or lunch. And, yes, Mom's is a one of a kind dining experience that everyone within 100 miles of here should experience. My partner had the chicken dumpling soup with home made dumplings. He ordered 3 extra servings to go and ate that soup in the car all the way to Page, AZ. The local Utah salt they serve and sell is a plus. This is an extraordinary eating establishment that is so obviously owned and managed by people who care about the details that make good food great. Do yourself a favor and let Mom make you a meal. The scone is not a scone, its fried dough served with "honey butter", which has neither honey nor butter in the ingredients (try corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soy oil, et al). The staff was very friendly when we were there. The food was made to order, but by & large the quality of ingredients was awful. On the positive side, our entrees were pretty good. Freshly grilled (meaning on a flat-top griddle, not a grill) pork chops & red trout. Both were maybe just a touch overcooked, but not bad at all. The side was frozen broccoli & carrot medley. Scones? Who ever heard of a deep fried scone? These were like fritters, except that fritters usually have pieces of something other than dough mixed in (e.g. corn, apple, crab, insert favorite mix-in). They're served with "honey-butter flavored" sauce that is purchased, with neither honey or butter on the ingredients list. 1st ingredient - HF corn syrup. Blech. How friggin hard is it to mix together some honey & butter?? Salad bar had a giant vat of old iceberg lettuce, brown not just on the edges from being cut, but all over. It seriously had to be a week old. And if you want me to believe Mom's making everything from scratch, at least put the dressing in tubs or dispensers instead of serving the bottles of store-bought Kraft & Wishbone. Mom's would have raving fans if they used fresh ingredients. They're not so far from SLC that it should be too hard to do. read more

The food were so-so and overpriced! Yikes! I paid $9 for a small fried lamb. I just learned there were different kind of scones. I was expecting a scone, like a regular one, but I got a greasy deep fried dough. I couldn't finish it. For a small town like Salina, I think they should adjust their prices. My Mom's a Better Cook Mom's Cafe has been around for a very long time and I can only presume that there have been a few different Mom's in charge over all those years. The cafe has obtained a certain amount of notoriety as evidenced by the numerous photos and newspaper and magazine articles decorating the walls. The cafe posts that they are famous for their home-made soups, scones and pies. We were driving through central Utah at around lunchtime and decided to have lunch at Mom's. It was 1:15pm, maybe a little late for a lunch service, and there was only one other party in the room. Our waitress was very friendly and was of enough of an age to be very experienced at her job. My wife, a healthier eater than me (and more particular about anything breaded or covered with gravy) had a BLT and it was very good. I'm more of a "in for a penny, in for a pound" eater, wanting to sample the local cuisine. They were out of the fried half chicken (I loves me some fried chicken), so I went all-in with the chicken fried steak. The full meals come with soup or salad and, since they advertise home-made soup, I went for the corn chowder. It was quite tasty in spite of huge chunks of potato and overly thick with too much corn starch. In spite of my request for the gravy on the side of my chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, it came rather engulfed by a thick, corn-starchy white gravy with chunks of ham(?) within. I was able to scrape a good bit aside. The chicken fried steak was nicely seasoned but the consistency was unpleasant. The mashed potatoes were flat and in need of salt in the preparation. The accompanying green beans tasted straight out of a can. Another home-made specialty of the house is their "scone". Apparently, this is what Utahans call what in most other places would be an Indian fry-bread or sopaipilla. It is a flat disk of fried bread. Unfortunately, it was in desperate need of salt in the batter. It is traditionally served with honey butter (rather than just plain honey). Ours came with a plastic bottle of "honey & butter flavored topping". It tasted horrible. The third leg of their home-made specialties was their pie. We tried the traditional apple pie. It was OK. The crust was nice and flaky, but (again) needed a bit of salt in the batter. The filling had nice, big pieces of apple, but it was overly sweet for our taste. For years as we drove to Boulder Colorado from California, 15 North to the 70 East was the quickest route. On one trip, we stumbled onto Mom's and have been going ever since. It a horse short of being a one-horse town, but this place is great. I have to admit I've only had two dishes - biscuits and gravy for breakfast and chicken-fried steak for lunch or dinner. I am giving this place 1 star for having awesome ketchup and mustard dispensers! I love when the ketchup squirts out perfectly. Anyway, why did I not give it more than 1 star is probably what you are wondering? Well, to start the waitress was fairly rude. We had a member of our party with dietary needs and she was treated like an outcast. The place was dingy but this can be looked past when the food is good. Decent bathroom though. The burgers were a two or three star and the fries were incredibly terrible. Our friend said the grilled chicken and salad bar were equally terrible. Now to top off this 1 star experience, we paid $26! Keep driving... south to Richfield or north to provo! We had gone down to Gunnison for family reunion. Had to be one of the worst weekends.. Cold, Cold, Cold and the wind at 55. We left Gunnison and called Mom's on our way to Salina. We started as 9 and quickly became 16. Our waitress had the back area and a couple of tables at the front. She was quick, nice and did not get perplexed when some of the family was none to pleased about their drinks. Once famous for feeding the likes of Willie Nelson and Ashley Judd; and once featured in Sunset Magazine; and once touted by Author Robert Fulgum as the source of the Second Best Chicken Fried Steak in the Country, Mom's Cafe has suffered serious decline. Apparently resting on their laurels their cuisine is pedestrian at best. The menu says "hand breaded veal cutlets," which turned out to be frozen Sysco patties and probably not veal at all. Most certainly not breaded. Service was slow. Very disappointed. I used to go out of my way to stop here. Not any more. There's a Denny's just up the road. It will most certainly have better food and I don't care that much for Denny's. read more

Get the trout! Fantastic. The mashed potatoes were really good too. Finally, the bread was some unique and tasty.

Amazing food. Don't go here without getting at least one of their scones with honey butter. The roast beef with au jus was excellent and rumor has it that the chicken fried steak is the best anywhere. And please dont leave without trying the pie. I was stuck at the Love's for my 34 hour reset. Being a truck driver I'm pretty sick of fast food. Feeling the need to get some exercise I decided to walk into town. It being Sunday there weren't a lot of options. So I decided to stop by Mom's and have a seat. I had The country fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. While the steak was average what I really enjoyed was the gravy. I also had the salad bar which was pretty good for such a small place. The antipasto, potato salad and the mushroom dressing were my favorites. But what really put this meal over the top was the scone, covered in honey-butter sauce was absolutely delicious. I would recommend getting off the interstate and going into town just to try one. read more
