Gyro omelet was fucking great. Hash browns were fairly bad. They bring you all your food and drinks, so you have to tip them, but they don't come and check on you, so you have to get up and walk over to the counter if you want anything, and it's awkward because they aren't even over there, so they have to stand up and meet you. It's just a bad system if you ask me. Tiebreaker between 3 and 4 stars is that they don't have AC, or even any fans, so this is a terrible place to go in the summer. Despite the good omelet, I wish we'd just walked out the second we realized there was no AC. read more

We went on a weekend during the brunch hour. We paid for our food up front and were able to grab a table by the windows. The place was pretty packed but emptied some during our time there. We had the Italian Omelet with hashbrowns and toast and the Belgian waffle combo. Both meals were just okay and the toast never made it to the table. A just-around-the-corner, local diner. That's the way I like 'em. Nestled on the corner of Harvard and Westcott, Mom's had been a staple in my grad school experience. Although not as good as the diner at the farmer's market (and a tad on the pricier side), Mom's is a great local joint to solve all of your hangover/diner/brunch needs. It's greasy, it's good, and their eggs/home fries/spicy sauces/lox bagels are all solid. Sometimes, I just got a large order of home fries with onions, and that was enough to get me through the day. Don't forget the hot sauce! And their curried eggs. Just get 'em if they are available. They're exotic enough to be interesting, but familiar enough that it won't be weird. They do change up their specials, so check 'em out! Also, the company at Mom's is friendly. Their staff is a little rough around the edges but they're good people and quick, and you can hang for quite a bit to get yourself back to functioning. read more

Coming here, I was super hyped to get food without a line. We paid upfront, waited for a table to free, and sat down. There were two cooks for about two dozens tables. That was the first sign of trouble. We knew they were busy, but once the one hour mark hit, my friend decided to ask if our food would be out, especially since two people who ordered after us received their food already. The server cut her off and didn't let her finish speaking. The server came back, saying the food is being cooked, and finally, we got to start eating. Our other friend asked for more mayo before the server left. The server was extremely confused by this... And started doing other tasks like cleaning tables, standing and smiling with the other staff, and after 10 minutes of waiting, my friend had to go up again to get packets of mayo that could easily have been gotten within a minute. You order when you walk in! Self serve coffee and tea once you pay at the counter. The prices are a little more than I expected. My friend got the steak and eggs while I got their spicy egg sunrise, which is eggs how you like them with a heavy dose of what seems like cajun seasoning and some chili garlic sauce to top it off. It was $25 for the both of us, not including tip. We've been here twice and it was definitely better the second time. My over easy eggs were the perfect texture and not too salty. I also got a short stack of pancakes which were a lot bigger than I thought they'd be. Fluffy with crispy edges! My friend's steak wasn't great the first time but it was delicious the second time. Service was very attentive especially in getting you the condiments you needed. We both loved the home fries but I would recommend staying away from the hash browns. The first time they were completely bland and way too tough, it's just a heated up frozen hash brown patty. No seasoning. The waitress insisted we ordered it the 2nd time we came (No, never again!) so we had to deal with it and they were still bland. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm too lazy to make breakfast. The atmosphere can get kind of loud since it's an open kitchen and floor plan but I didn't mind it too much. The booths need to be repaired but they were still comfy. read more

I would give 3.5, but I'm erring on the side of 4 because this place is such a homey, family run place. It can get a little confusing, since you order at the front rather than at the tables, but like. Come on. It's not that hard to understand. No one ever tries to rush you out or anything, and it's nestled nicely in the Westcott community so people who live there (aka grad students galore) often drop in on the weekends. Sometimes undergrads do as well, so if you're a new TA, be prepared for some awkward gaze avoidance / shock on the part of your students, realizing that you do, indeed, have a life outside of school and you do, indeed, eat! Try the omlettes (especially gyro and broccoli/cheddar) and the corned beef hash, and support your local businesses!! read more

Yesterday morning, I was passing through Syracuse when my friends and I decided to stop for food. We looked up diners in the area and decided to stop at Moms. I had never experienced a diner like that before, you order your food at the counter, take a number and wait for a table to open up to go sit. We thought it was a cute idea and decided to order, wait and sit. We sat down and took a look around. There were two middle aisles of booths and tables and then booths along the wall as well, we noted there were only two cooks for all these tables, so we started a timer. We waited over an hour for our food. When we finally asked, after the one hour mark, the waitress was EXTREMELY rude, she did not let me finish asking the question about what was going on with our food, and gave no apology, either before she brushed it off and walked away. She came back and said it was being worked on...again, an hour later. So our food FINALLY came and we started to eat. My friend had ordered the turkey club (an hour wait for a turkey club? HORRIBLE!) and needed more mayo, that's when she stopped the waitress, who did not even bother to ask if our food came out okay, and asked for some, she gave us an attitude but said okay. We waited 10 minutes, watched our waitress laughing, talking and looking over at our table before I finally had to get up and ask another waitress for mayo. It was insane, we waited 10 minutes for her to stand around doing nothing when they had mayo packets at the counter. The waitress continued to taunt our table by smirking and making comments under her breath while walking around, cleaning other tables. I thought Mom's would have been a cute place if their food did not take an hour and the waitresses were actually friendly, but because they are not really acting as a real waitress, they have no regard for the job. Hands down the worst diner I've ever been to. I hear people rave about this place, but most of it's clientele are hungover college kids...and the only ones keeping it in business. The breakfast potatoes were dry, tasteless and downright awful. What's a diner worth if they can't make good breakfast potatoes? My omelette was edible, but not enough to redeem the potatoes. Service style isn't like a normal diner. You order up front, they bring the food to the table, but they don't wait on you. I wanted more water, and had to wait 15 minutes until I saw someone working there. Then I had to go up and ask for the water. If I have to work for my food at a restaurant, it better be much better than anything served at this place! read more

I like this diner a lot, it's like a local corner neighborhood diner where you could grab a cup of coffee and watch the game while eating a tasty breakfast. I've gone here a few years ago and their menu was seriously lacking, plus was super expensive for a simple plate; think bacon, two eggs and home fries for $9 bucks. But today, seemed like they employed a few good chefs and they've hugely improved the existing menu. My friend had the gyro omelette which he said was really good and I had the frittata omelette with everything which was really tasty! The prices are really good these days, one of the quirks of this restaurant is you have to order up front as well as grab your own coffee. This is a Syracuse institution and I think would be here to stay for a while! read more

I always come here with my boyfriend. It is such and underrated place. Theres always great service and delicious food. I love everything in particular the Jersey Sandwich. Theres almost no wait, unlike overhyped diners like Stellas, and it has the same quality of food or even better. Its located in a nice place in westcott. Let me start by saying that I have never had the urge to puke after eating at a diner. I ordered a bacon cheddar burger medium with fries. The burger was well done, the toppings were disgusting and the fries were hard. My friend had a philly egg sandwich and corn beef hash. We both made it home and puked in our driveway before even making it upstairs. There is no service, you order up front, and nobody waits on you. The food took 20 minutes to come which is very long. I WILL NEVER EVER give this place business again. Absolutely disgusting. I don't get how it is in business. I LOVE MOMS! I feel like I just had to open with that because sometimes I just find myself blurting it out on a whim. Now let me tell you WHY i love mom's, first and foremost the ambiance. The place is just nice to be at its close to my house so I am able to stroll right over at a moments notice the food is delicious AND THEY HAVE GOOD HOMEFRIES. I am all about the savory breakfast and let me tell you bad homefries are a deal breaker for me, but let me tell you, mom fits the bill on this puppy. Now lets get back to the ambiance the place has a variety of eclectic wall decor providing both eye entertainment as well as conversation starters if your dining with a new friend. I also love moms because they let you seat yourself, this is simply wonderful if you want to change your mind fix or six times for all my fellow indecisive friends out there! Ed and I came in to Moms at about 8:45 on October 21, 2014. I was starting to sit in a booth when Ed pointed out that orders were taken at the counter. We had our order taken promptly, our usual--For Ed: 2 eggs scrambled, white toast, and coffee for Ed; for me: 1 egg over easy, wheat toast, coffee, and home fries (of which I give Ed a sample, or more if he wants it). We got self-serve coffee right next to the counter, and found when we sat down that the coffee was good. As we went to sit, we were greeted by a table of friends in this Westcott Neighborhood place. The smallish restaurant is filled with high-backed green booths that are reasonably comfortable and tables with faux-stone tops. It has gray walls with orange-red highlights and trim. The black-and-white tile floor was looking pretty scuffed up and not entirely clean-looking. The service was quick and the food was "good, but nothing special," Ed said. He thought the home fries were 5 out of 10, just average. I forgot to ask for my toast "dry," which is my preference, and it did come buttered. We sat next to the large plate-glass windows, looking out onto The Westcott Theatre and Alto Cinco Mexican restaurant across the street, and enjoyed our meal. Upon leaving, we found the check a total of $11.31, which seems like a good price. If you're in the neighborhood and looking for a quick place for breakfast in a friendly atmosphere, Mom's Diner will meet your need. read more
