The fast options were slim and not appealing. Thank goodness we found this great spot downtown. The service is without question some of the best I have had in a long time. I explained what we needed and they went above and beyond to help us. We ordered a turkey sandwich, and they delivered! This is not just a couple slices of meat on some bread!! This is a SANDWICH!! It was big enough that our racer was full and ready to go but not too big he couldn't shove it in his mouth in record time. At the time of this review I am planning on going back in the morning to get 2 more sandwiches and deliver them in Cuero, which is the next fueling stop! They offer a WiFi connection and will share their printer if you need it. There is a well-stocked Little Free Library just inside the door. If you decide to set a spell to read, or chat with the locals, you should order one of the pastries to go with your coffee . We scored a pair of delicious cookies to take on the road. A local favorite for coffee and bite to eat. I had a lettuce wrap. For lunch today and it was so pretty! I know that seems silly, but it was. And it tasted great too. I asked for light mayonnaise and they did it perfectly. The owner, Gretchen, was there and she really is a Mom kind of character. All the staff was friendly. It was fun to be told "I AM the menu" when I asked what they had. Besides Ice creams and about any kind of fancy coffee you can think of they have a limited menu of incredibly fresh food. We love coming here on our trips between Houston and San Antonio of the Hill Country. Their bread is baked fresh and cut thick. Just like in days gone by. The crest is well baked, yet thin and can easiest peel away. Yet you still have this thick soft bread to sink your teeth into. It's so worth it to spend some time here instead of the larger chain stores on the highway. The tomatoes are fresh and today you can tell we're ripened in the vine. Their sweetness reminds me of home garden raise vegetables. The way we were meant to enjoy food. Save room for a cookie or their small batch ice cream. I have been to Luling many times to enjoy the City Market BBQ and the small-town ambiance. On this trip, we had our fill of BBQ and were heading out of town back to Austin with a hankering for ice cream. Mom's Front Porch popped up as the best ice cream with 5 stars and we looped back to 2 blocks from City Market BBQ. We have walked the retail shops before, but have not made it down the block as far as Mom's. It was well worth it! I was hungry for lunch and wanted a quick bite to eat from San Marcos heading back to Houston, but I didn't want fast food. Anytime I am traveling, I try to support local and avoid chain restaurants. Luling seemed to be a good place to stop since I was at a crossroads there (where you catch I-10 to head back), so I yelped and found this place. I was not disappointed. Situated in a strip center on the corner next to railroad tracks, you really need to listen to google maps. [I thought I knew better LOL.] If you go on the wrong street, no worries, it's easy to turn around. There is free parking available in front of the place. I looked at the menu, and the man (husband of the wife who cooks) explained what was available that Sunday afternoon. I had never had a ham salad before, so why not try? He said he preferred it to chicken salad in general, and I can see why. It's saltier, which means you get more flavor...because let's face it, pork is more flavorful than chicken LOL. The balance between the amount of ham and the amount of the other stuff (the salad part, as I call it) was spot on. It was delicious, and hands down, I'd return for the ham salad sandwich. The bread is homemade, and you can tell a difference vs store-bought. I will never be able to bake bread like these people! The white bread is so fluffy but still sturdy enough to form your sandwich. I had no issues eating and driving. My picture doesn't do the sandwich size justice - it's about a 6" square. My meal lasted in my tummy for about 7hrs until I was hungry again, so it was well worth the price of $7 and change! I made the sandwich a combo and added a drink (Texans gotta have that sweet tea!), chips, and best of all, it came with a pickle. Now how could anybody complain about that? If I am taking a road trip again through this town, this will definitely be at the top of my list to eat! read more
