Oh my..... The Prime Steak Frites Bordelaise was soooo DELICIOUS! The steak was perfectly cooked Medium Rare, the frites are probably the best frites I have ever had. No condiments needed, just the caramelized onion and red wine sauce was harmonious with it. Now, I am adding to my-to list when I visit Chicago is getting the Prime Steak Frites at Mon Ami Gabi. Best dining experience we have had in a while. Food was exceptional- it isn't often we dine somewhere and are eager to come back and don't feel like we need to try different dishes. We were here for our anniversary last night and my husband had the deviled eggs and steak frites Bernaise and I had the duck confit and steak fries classique. Everything was excellent. We were given complimentary profiteroles. My only criticism of this restaurant is that it's tight quarters- you WILL be very close to people next to you, no way around it. And it's hard to get up or walk around the restaurant without knocking people. However, this isn't enough to lower my review. read more

Flavorful and generous with the bacon bites Little Gem & Corsican Feta Salad: LOVE it! It was sweet and tangy. My boyfriend and I came here for a date night and I was quickly charmed. Beautiful ambience, with soft cozy lighting and a very old school Parisian feel. Gluten free options are clearly marked on the menu, which I appreciated. We both ordered steak frites, I got the bearnaise sauce which was fantastic. Tonight we opted to have the frisé salad, shrimp cocktail, and steak frites classic. It was rather busy even though it was well after 8 PM on a Saturday. Cozy dining room reminisce of a French bistro. We opted to purchase the baguette. I always think it's a little corny that you have to pay for bread. The shrimp cocktail was delicious. It came with six large shrimp on ice. We then split the frisé salad and asked for an extra egg. It was good but slightly overdressed, and had very few pieces of lardon. We also shared the steak frites and they were kind enough to split that in the kitchen. The steak was cooked, medium, and was tender and flavorful. The fries are always outstanding. We then finished the meal off with a chocolate mousse and crème brûlée. The only issue we felt was service was slow as mentioned. Definitely will return and recommend to others. Located in the Lincoln Park area across from the zoo. Valet Parking is available. At the time of this review it is $17 per car. They will take Venmo. There is street parking if available but it can be difficult. Public transportation would probably be the 151 bus or 22 off of Clark. read more

We have had many excellent meals and especially considered the onion soup to be outstanding. However our latest order was simply awful. Gone was the flavor of what always tasted like a wonderful red wine. Gone was the richness of the broth. Instead we received a bland watery soup with no cheese. And then in a separate wrap a hard shell of some unknown food, maybe cheese that when placed in the soup did not soften enough to cut into bite size pieces. We had to remove it from the soup. so extremely disappointed as the onion soup had always been the highlight of dinner there. read more

Mon Ami Gabi is located inside the Belden-Stratford Building, so it was a little tricky finding the entrance (they were under renovation). We walked past the entrance, as did many patrons after us! However, it was worth the little detour because the food was delicious. I made two starters my meal- duck confit and half pot of mussels. My bf started with the French onion soup and had the steak classifque as his main. He also got a side of macaroni gratin. The duck confit was perfectly crisp and tender- meat fell right off the bone. The mussels were fresh and the broth was light but so tasty. I ate EVERYTHING. My bf enjoyed his selections as well, but his eyes were bigger than his stomach! Brought my spouse for his birthday. Everything was great and waiter was in good spirits. We got there early for 5:15 pm reservation. They were very accommodating, even pulling out the table to sit down. It was crowded but not too loud. We ordered the mussels and bread. Very generous portions and entree was delicious. We slowly became more and more satisfied until we barely finished dessert. They also brought out a profiterole with a lit candle for his birthday. Only complaint is when I called and asked for candle the man who answered said they had no candles. But it all ended well. I highly recommend Mon Ami Gabi for elegant dining. I'd say a 4.5. Their service is always on point (they don't rush you and super friendly) and they also have a valet which is convenient! I always go for their onion soup (you can split in half for free) and mussels - their mussles are some of the best in Chicago. I give a 4.5 because sometimes the mussels are not as good, they have some bad days). I heard their other memus like salmon are pretty good as well. It's very family friendly, but it can get a bit loud in the evening. It's a nice date spot but also doesn't feel super uptight/fine dining! Definitely one of my favorite spots in Chicago. read more

The au poivre sauce which was good. It was not medium rare but not terribly dry which is decent for a thin steak. Dessert Trio is an excellent idea for Restaurant Week. They have heaters in the colder months and the ambient noise of the clinking silverware and conversation of patrons around you creates the most intimate atmosphere. Service from the entire patio staff was impeccable and we were really happy with what we ordered! The french onion soup was delicious albeit quite heavy - would definitely recommend the half portion over the full as it was the perfect size to start. The little gem salad left a little to be desired. I appreciated the effort of the presentation but it was a little messy eating a salad where the toppings were not mixed in and you had to cut full pieces of lettuce yourself. I'd pass on this one! For the main, I ordered Steak Frites cooked Bordelaise style. The steak was the perfect medium rare as I had requested and it was very flavorful. Some bites were a bit too chewy but overall really enjoyed this dish and felt it was reasonably priced. The restaurant tends to draw a more sophisticated crowd but would also be a great date spot in the future :) read more

Beef Wellington: This was my first time having bordelaise, and it really knocked my expectations out of the park. The entire experience is definitely unforgettable, steak that melted in your mouth, mushroom filling with the bordelaise creating a really unexplainable flavor profile. Exceptional. Escargots: Also my first time trying escargots, they tasted interesting. Pretty seafoody aftertaste and tender to chew, paired well with the crunchiness of the baguette that comes with it. Not too sure what the sauce was supposed to be, it was also pretty oily. Trout Almondine: I usually am not a huge fan of trout, but this trout was fresh, really tender, and very well seasoned. This place is gorgeous. Went there for a friends birthday and she was very happy. $35 for steak and fries is a pretty good deal and that's what most plates cost. Out of all of steaks the filet mignon was the tastiest. It's one of the nicer restaurants in Lincoln park to go to. read more

I love french food and brunch so I was excited to try Mon Ami Gabi's brunch menu. We made reservations and were seated almost immediately. The service was great and very prompt in taking our order, bringing out the food, and eventually the the bill. There was great ambiance, and lively atmosphere so it didn't feel stuffy or like we couldn't talk and laugh at your table. The table was tight against the wall but luckily we were all small and could sit on our puffy jackets to make room. I tried the croque monsieur and it was wonderful.
