This place is a must go whenever I come down to LA. My aunt and uncle are regulars here for a reason! The fish is always so fresh and just melts in your mouth. The sushi here is genuinely so good and always very consistent. Probably the best sushi in LA. The couple that owns the place are very sweet and extremely generous. Came here on a Friday night with my mom and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience from beginning to end. We entered through the rear entrance near the parking area, and the hallway leading to the dining room was extremely cluttered with stacked items and storage, which immediately gave the restaurant an unclean and uncomfortable atmosphere. Service was also difficult. One waitress struggled heavily with communication, while another was surprisingly rude and dismissive. My mom politely asked if the edamame could be served separately from the entrées, and the response was, 'I know what I'm doing,' said twice in an irritated tone before walking away from the table. Throughout the meal, nobody checked on us once. I eventually had to get up myself just to ask for napkins, and even that interaction felt inconveniencing to the staff. Asking for extra ginger also seemed to visibly annoy them. The restroom was very small and had an unpleasant odor, and unfortunately the food itself did not make up for the experience. The sushi lacked freshness and flavor and overall just didn't feel enjoyable. First time, last time. Came in around 7pm tonight. Waited for someone to greet us for 10 minutes. The elderly lady told us "Do you have reservation?" I said no, then she told us to write our name in the waiting list. I was taken back because I definitely always make reservation whenever possible. Food: For me this place always hits home! The food is consistently good and fresh. The toro is nice and fatty and they are usually very generous with the amounts of fish. Service: I love the people there! My family has been Mon costumers for a while and since the start we got a nice homey vibe that felt humble and welcoming. We used to love Mon Ramen in Woodland Hills and were so bummed when it closed down earlier this summer! So we had to try the OG location to get our fix and they did not disappoint. The tsukemen ramen was great as always - there are very few places in the Valley I've been able to find that have tsukemen without going out to Sawtelle. We also ordered inari, volcano roll, Munchy hand roll (my husband's go-to order from Mon Ramen), and a spicy salmon roll. The only roll we weren't a fan of was the salmon one as it tasted like it had horseradish in it. All the rest were fantastic though. If you're looking for a Japanese restaurant that serves sushi that will transport you to Japan, this is it. The restaurant itself is traditionally decorated and gives the comforting vibe of a mom and pop shop. I imagine this is what it would feel like to go to a cozy family-owned sushi diner in Japan where I could easily become a regular. The fish is incredibly fresh, the sushi selection is vast (with some fish coming straight from Japan), and if sushi isn't your thing, they have a variety of fantastic cooked options to choose from as well. We ordered the scallop, toro, yellowtail, ikura (salmon roe), amaebi (sweet shrimp), red snapper, flying fish, oysters, and spicy scallop hand roll -- and everything we ate was absolutely fantastic (we ordered a few of these more than once). The fish was cut so well it melted in our mouths and left us wanting more. The hand roll was perfectly wrapped and the nori kept its structure as it was being consumed (and if you're an avid hand roll enjoyer, you know how annoying it is when the nori gets soggy). The oysters were beautifully garnished and cut in a way that allowed us to eat it with chopsticks instead of getting our fingers dirty (the preparation was a pleasant surprise and something we've never seen before). We asked for a recommendation and Yuji-san prepared the flying fish nigiri from Japan -- it was our first time trying it and we were blown away by how delicate, light, and delicious it was. For dessert, the banana tempura with matcha ice cream was the perfect way to wrap up the meal. The tempura banana was light and fried to perfection, giving a nutty, savory taste that was balanced by the cooling, earthy matcha ice cream. Our bellies were very much full of food by the end of the meal but we didn't feel like we were going to burst thanks to the soothing hot tea Noriko-san brought out. Yuji-san (the chef) and Noriko-san (his wife) are some of the kindest souls I've had the pleasure of meeting, and each dish came out perfectly paced for us to enjoy and our cups were never empty. We will definitely be coming back with friends and family, and I would highly recommend Mon Japanese Restaurant to anyone craving authentic Japanese food. *** I wanted to add that I've ordered delivery from here quite a few times now (I always get the premium chirashi) and it always comes securely packaged and labeled -- and they somehow manage to maintain the freshness as well, which speaks volumes on the quality of their ingredients IMO. My wife stop by here for lunch after we made reservation for dine in. It definitely a hole in a wall sushi place. FOOD: Premium Chirashi: Nice fresh bowl of Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon, Scallop, Ikura, Uni and Shrimp. My only problem about this bowl was the rice. The sushi rice wasn't seasoned at all. Just your plan short gain Japanese rice. It's a bummer because this bowl would have been fantastic. AJI Nigiri: I personally love Aji and this place does it ok. Disappointing Service - Not Worth the Hype First and foremost, this review is entirely based on the awful service we received. We came in with high expectations based on the glowing reviews, but what we experienced was beyond frustrating. We arrived, were seated, and placed a simple order--three rolls and garlic edamame. Nearly one hour later, all we had received was one roll and one cold order of Edamame and NOTHING else, while other customers who arrived long after us were being served promptly. Granted, this was served to us AFTER we inquired that we had been waiting for nearly 1 hour. After flagging someone down to ask about our food, the manager casually drops off our long-forgotten, ice-cold edamame with a half-hearted apology. Not only was it cold and soggy, but it was also condensed with moisture, clearly sitting out on the counter for who knows how long. When we inquired about the rest of our order, we were met with attitude instead of accountability. The manager was defensive and dismissive, acting like we were the problem for asking why our food never arrived. With how many takeout orders they were prioritizing over dine-in customers, we finally had enough and asked to cancel the rest of our order. But wait--it gets worse. They still charged us for the sad, soggy edamame. So after an hour and 20 minutes, we walked out, $40 down, with nothing but a bad taste in our mouths--and not from the food. It's a family-owned business, and we love supporting small restaurants, but that does not excuse poor service and outright rude behavior. If you're too overwhelmed with takeout orders to properly serve your dine-in customers, either fix your system or stop taking more than you can handle. At the end of the day, it's not my responsibility to pay for your bad attitude. We won't be coming back. And just like the service we received--this review is written in perfect alignment. read more

The ramen was decent but the service was awful. To start,we waited about 10 minutes to get seated even though they had a couple of open tables. It took a long time to take our order because they were helping people that came in after us. Our order was wrong but since it took so long we decided to keep it. It honestly seems like they only take good care of their regular customers with greeting and attentiveness. I've never felt so uncomfortable and unwanted in a restaurant. We used to frequent their sister restaurant, Mon Ramen, on Ventura and the owner treated everyone equally. Sadly that location closed so we decided to try this location. I've been a loyal customer here for over 15 years. The service is always solid and the sushi is fresh. Unfortunately this last time I went I got very sick from their ramen I had here :( the sushi was frozen tasting, like ice ice cold, and they also charged me for hot water. Not tea, JUST hot water. Despite getting super sick, it was actually them charging me for the water that rubbed me the wrong way. It's not about the $ and it's not the end of the world, but more about the principle. I go to restaurants all the time and order hot water, instead of cold iced water that they bring out complimentary and I've never been charged before. If there was a charge I feel like they should've disclosed that prior to bringing it out. I was surprised to see that on the bill, and when I asked them about it they had no inclination to remove it. So yeah, after all the years going here, getting very sick and getting a charge for tap WATER it kinda left me disappointed :( I hope it was just a busy off day for them, as I have been enjoyed my experiences here overall. read more

Mon Japanese Restaurant is a truly hidden gem of a foodie spot offering a large variety of unique Japanese dishes and a lot of exotic creative specialty sushi with a surprise amount of vegan options including the Shiitake Roll, a mushroom based veggie roll with avocado soy paper and garlic sauce. The tofu steak, spicy creamy vegetable ramen and a lot of the sides and apps are vegan friendly not to mention the classics such as the cucumber, avocado and veggie roll. There's definitely something for everyone here including this homie neighborhood sushi bar vibe. The bathrooms are way in the back and deccent enough. The entire outside and inside dining area are very inviting and lively. They do have some large monitors for sports or whatever is popular as well as the weather from all over the world. There was a birthday here towards the end of the meal and they dimmed the house lights and the entire crew sang to them with a nice birthday ice cream-ish dessert. I opted out of sharing it was my birthday weekend as I would've donated my complimentary dessert to one of my awesome friends for joining me on a wonderful night and we were just about stuffed. We did hit up one final sushi spot on our "sushi crawl" much like a beer crawl... but Mon Japanese was one of our favorites of the night hands down. A must try! They do offer beer, wine and sake here (also technically wine) and there is usually street parking close by... mostly meters yet free after 8pm. We made a reservation through Google 30 minutes before heading over and everything was set up right in front and incredible especially the service. There is usually seating at the bar but rarely a wait. Definitely make a reservation for groups with 6 or more with notice as you'll definitely want to come back. read more
