We came on Tuesday at 530, and it was pretty empty, it was also somewhat warm out lol. I got the miso broth with brisket and the shiratake noodles. Everything was great. My boyfriend and I like to go out for dinner for Date Night and this night he got to choose where we went. He knows I love hot pot and instead of our usual 626 hot pot spots, he wanted to choose something new and hip that we've never tried before. He heard from a friend that Tabu Shabu was a good hot pot place so we decided to try it out. The restaurant is located in the corner in a huge plaza, we came on a Friday night and although the plaza was busy, we were able to find a parking spot. Inside the restaurant, you'll either be seated the few tables that they or in the center circular "bar" style seating. It was my first time being at a hot pot place with this style seating, but it was a unique experience. Once seated, we were given menus and quickly asked what we wanted to drink. After the waitress took our order, it took us about 15 minutes for our appetizer to arrive. We ordered spicy edamame and a cucumber salad. The menu was very basic and I wasn't impressed with the broth selection. The standard broth was traditional kombu (literally water with a huge piece of seaweed), miso for additional $1, sukiyaki, for additional $3, and tonkotsu for additional $4. Sounds a bit absurd to me that they would charge extra for the different options when at much better tasting Hot Pot places, the options would all be included in the price. After 20 minutes, one of the waiters noticed that we didn't receive our broth or food and asked us if we ordered yet. We told him that a waitress took our order already but we haven't received our food. Turns out, the waitress took our order but didn't place it in the system yet. I'm hangry at this point, we came to our reservation at 7:30, it's 8:20 at this point and we had plans at 9pm-- so I was a bit annoyed that we had to wait so long. Things were turned around once we received our order though, the broth and food came quickly after she placed our order and the veggie platter section was OK. I'm not the biggest fan of hot pot places that have preselected veggie plates. The veggie plate had a small handful of spinach, a few pieces of napa cabbage, 3 pieces of broccoli, two slices of kabocha pumpkin, a small bunch of enoki mushroom, two pieces of tofu, and some onion slices. It's a nice "variety" but I only like broccoli and mushroom, but because I don't eat rice I had no choice but to eat the veggies to fill me up. I'm happy they offered Shirataki noodles! I chose the large portion and did half chicken half chuck roll. The chuck roll I was given was chewy and fatty. I spat out the chewy parts which was basically majority of the portion I was given. Would I come back here? No, but being from the 626, I have higher expectations for hot pot because I've grown up eating it. This is a good hot pot place for beginner hot pot goers. read more

Excellent shabu shabu experience in SFV! We sat at the bar because it looked fun and it was a blast! We sat around the edge but each seat had its own personal burner. We didn't notice until we were leaving that you can request a spoon and tongs - I'll do that next time because the chopsticks game was struggling with the slippery udon noodles . All three of us got the ribeye off the recommendation of someone else at the bar and it was excellent. Overall I will say service was a little bit slow at the beginning and end of our evening because the restaurant was quite busy but it was ok because they were plenty attentive while we were eating. We made a reservation which I do recommend since it got quite packed while we were there. I never saw anyone waiting in line though so make with that information what you want. There's a parking lot/garage but I also easily found street parking (free on Sundays). They also had a small smoker device to put on Old Fashioned drinks which my friend got and it was really entertaining. This was my first shabu shabu experience and it wasn't a bad time at all. Perhaps I didn't have anything to compare it to, but I thought we had a good meal. I wish I could have picked the veggies, as I ended up with a bunch that I wasn't keen on, but perhaps I should ask next time. The noodles didn't look appetizing, but they looked much better once warmed and served. Fair amount of meat, though prices seemed a tad bit high for the quality and portion. I appreciated that they walked us through the sauces and how to use the setup. Presentation was ultimately a bit lackluster, but again perhaps I am just not yet aware of expectations. One thing, though - we sat near the door, and the contrast of the hot cooking with the windy and chilly air did not make for the greatest experience. Try to sit away from the door if you can. I've been to Tabu for lunch twice now and it's definitely a solid spot for shabu shabu in the Valley. The meat is good quality and veggies are fresh. I was so happy a Shabu Shabu restaurant opened close to me. It's located on Ventura blvd with a large parking lot underground. I made a reservation which was easy but when we got there they had open tables which was nice. The waitress was very sweet and explained the process to us and helped us pick out meats. I was looking for a good Shabu place in the valley and this place popped up first. I'm so glad it did! First let me say, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. We sat at the shabu bar (open seating first come first serve) and our waiter was so nice and very Knowledgeable of the menu. I wasn't sure which base/broth to get and he explained them all. I opted for the seaweed broth and added my own sauces in the pot for flavor. I did the 2 item LG (shrimp and ribeye). All items come with a plate of veggies (mushroom, spinach, carrots, tofu... and I'm probably missing an item or 2 lol). Service was fast and the food was good! I wish they had more seafood options. There is no outdoor seating, however they have the hightop bar or table seating. Parking is limited at the top but they do have a lower level parking garage (no charge). I haven't had shabu shabu in many years and I was excited to see Tabu Shabu pop up in the Valley! I came here on a weeknight and it was relatively chill. They do have some tables, but we sat at the hightop counter seats which was fun. It felt somewhat like a communal dining experience but I was still able to talk to my friend and didn't feel cramped at the counter. Service here was great! Our waiter was very attentive and answered all the questions we had about the menu. I got the beef belly which was pretty good! If you aren't familiar with how shabu shabu works, you have to cook everything yourself so you kind of have to stay on top of your bowl as everything is floating around and cooking in there. So if something is overcooked its your own fault haha. I learned that my noodles should go in last and they only need to go in there for a short period of time cause I definitely overcooked them. I really enjoyed the dipping sauces and all the veggies that came with the soup. You can choose between portion sizes and they have all kinds of meat options. Came here twice in a span of 4 days. I really enjoyed the shabu experience. You choose your broth, rice, noodles, and protein size. They all come with a plate of veggies. Note that specific broths and noodles are an added cost. Both times I chose miso broth with a side of spicy chili paste and udon. For protein, I've had angus ribeye and then short rib. Not sure how they measure between a regular and large portion, but they did kind of look discrepant between both visits. I think when I eat shabu or hot pot, that's the only time I get my allotment of veggies in my diet so I really like the assortment of vegetables that includes mushrooms, cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, spinach, carrots, and tofu. Meats are sliced really thin, so a quick dip in the boiling broth is sufficient to cook it. Upon the first visit, one of the servers was putting away the utensils, and we overheard her tell another server they didn't look clean. I do think they were slightly understaffed that day but everyone was working hard and doing their best and I really appreciated that. There's parking right out front and the restaurant was easy to find. One thing we loved was the bar style seating for smaller parties. If your group is under three people you sit at the bar setup to eat, which we thought was super cute and different. Decided to come back for another try. The service was great but it was also very slow so there were only a handful of tables. We went around 4:00 pm on a Sunday. My wife tried the new miso black garlic broth which was excellent. They provide the miso broth with the black garlic on the side so you can add as much or as little as you want. This broth had such great flavor that you really didn't need the dipping sauces. The broth really shined when we made the udon. It was rich and salty without adding any shoyu to it. I really enjoyed it but my wife found it a little too salty after a while. We also tried the salmon yuzu appetizer. The presentation was lacking but the portions were great. The fish was fresh but it was drowning in the sauce. Fortunately the sauce was not strong and so the taste was surprisingly good. I'm more traditional when it comes to the saucing of any sushi or fish but I realize many non Asians enjoy lots of different flavors on their sushi which I feel masks the fish that I'm trying to enjoy. I ordered the traditional kombu broth which was delicious as always with the Wagyu Chuck. The Wagyu Chuck has a more "beefy" flavor but is not as fatty or tender as the prime brisket. It's crazy how when my wife and I met, we used to have to go to downtown LA just to get Shabu shabu at a place called Yojie. It was one of our favorite spots and when we would explain shabu to people they didn't understand what we were talking about. Now you can find shabu shabu places around but none are quite as good as Tabu. Every Friday we try to grab dinner at a restaurant as a family and have our kids try new food experiences they've never had before. Well this was a fun one! We called Tabu and asked if we needed a reservation. They asked how far I was and that they would save a booth for us. Once we arrived, we were met with a small, cozy, modern and clean restaurant with a friendly hostess who asked if I was EJ. They quickly sat us at our table and grabbed our drinks. Our waitress explained the menu and we decided to order our meals and kid's meals. We always love when a restaurant has kid's meals or at least cuts the price in half for children. They heated the pots up and we got to work! How it works is, you pick your base (we got the sukiyaki) and then you pick your protein (I got the angus beef and salmon, the kids got the angus beef and my wife got the wagyu (so good!). They bring you a bowl of rice and a plate of vegetables and noodles you toss in the pot. Shabu Shabu means swish swish, meaning you take your protein and swish it for a minute in your hot pot and then eat it. I also ordered a drink called Ube Horchata which I wasn't really a fan of but I drank it just because. However, I believe it's an acquired taste that only some will enjoy lol. Our kids loved everything they had and my wife said she will be going back there all the time. Overall, we will 100% be back and the only thing they could add the make it perfect is to add chocolate fondue as a dessert. The broth was bland, the vegetables felt low quality and hastily plated, and nothing about it felt particularly authentic for a hot pot spot. We sat at the bar expecting a more elevated experience, but the pot controls are positioned on the server's side and since service was minimal, our broth was left boiling long before any of our food arrived. For a small restaurant it still feels large and at no point did I feel crowded. I decided to splurge and try the premium meat Wagyu Short Rib. It was delicious. All the accompanying veggies were excellent as well. I love this place!! Shabu Shabu has been one of my altimeter favorite meals and I have enjoyed it over the last 20+ years. From Little Tokyo to NYC... I just moved out to the 818 from Westside and I was so happy to find this place. I have been now 4-5 times. Albert, who works there is the best!! I don't often go to new restaurants until they have been opened for a couple of months because it takes a while to get things running smoothly. I went to Tabu Shabu for lunch on a Saturday shortly after they opened. I had been in touch ahead of time to see about a reservation because I had a recent surgery and have a hard time at high top seats. They were able to hold the two low seats at the bar for me, which I greatly appreciated! I was told that the actual tables were for parties of four or more. Do know that most seating is at a bar in high top seats. Everyone at the restaurant was working very hard and doing everything to make it a great experience for all of the guests. I saw an old friend, Enrique who I knew from another restaurant. He didn't slow down once while we were there. And, Geronimo took great care of us. The amount of food for me was a lot. The selections to choose from were great and everything was fresh and delicious. Many sauces and broth enhancements to be had! Food: meats were very good, I got the combo premium. The amount of beef they give you is sufficient enough for 1 person. I tried the miso soul base. I have to say that it was disappointing only because it could have been better had they served it correctly. They come out with a pitcher of the soup base you order. The server did not mix the miso pitcher before pouring it in my bowl. All the flavor concentrated at the bottom, as most miso soups tend to do. My soul base was basically water. I had to add every flavor they had available in the table for me to enjoy it. I ended up just taking some of the Sukiyaki soup from my mom's pot, which was actually delicious. The rice could be better. I found it was too wet making the rice too mushy. Maybe it's just by preference, but def not to my liking. Service: Albert was great, very friendly and attentive. Finally got a chance to try this place out! When we tried (Saturday evening), there was no option to make reservations through Yelp and it claimed a 5 min live wait time so we didn't join the wait-list, but it was full and a 30 min wait when we arrived 15 min later, so make your reservations by phone, especially if you want a table. We had a party of 4 and ended up at the bar, but that turned out for the best. The bar is designed for people to have their own hot pots, and the tables only have room for 2 grills so people will have to share. That said, on to the food. They start with a full plate of vegetables, and then the meat comes a bit later so you've had time to cook all the vegetables in the hotpot. There's a free spice booster that you can add to your soup, but it didn't really change the flavor much for me, so I could go with or without. The meat was quite tender, and a regular size was easily enough for me. If I had to point out any downsides, it would be that the bar seating is bad for group chatting, but the tables are bad for individual meals, so I'm not sure what the best approach is for a party of more than 2. read more
