Both tasted very fresh but they use a chili oil instead of a chili paste that I'm used to. Husband ordered the salmon teriyaki dinner that came with a miso soup with tofu but no seaweed and a salad. The salmon portion was small but tasted good. The teriyaki sauce was tasty and not overly sweet. The service was efficient. Ambiance was cramped as you sit at a bar. Both times I ordered, their lunch chirashi. Their chirashi has a nice variety assortment of fresh fish. Tatsuki Lunch Box A is another great option that comes with 6pc tempura, 6pc thick cuts sashimi, and spicy cut roll. Sushi: Spanish Mackerel- good but too much ponzu. An absolute hidden gem. Came for lunch in the middle of the week and there was plenty available bar seating. I ordered the chirashi bowl and a blue crab hand roll. The chirashi bowl came with miso soup and pickled cucumbers which were delicious. The assortment of fish in the bowl was all fantastic with the salmon, fatty tuna, and eel being my favorites. The portion is more than filling as well! I usually am disappointed with most blue crab handrolls but theirs was an exception. The crab was sweet and light. This is my husband's favorite sushi bar. He raved about it so much that I had to try it. So, for years we'd come every Friday night after work for sushi and beer. The owner and his daughter provide not only the best sushi I've ever had, but also the best service. The ambiance is relaxing and welcoming. I love their firecracker and red dragon rolls with a side of sriracha sauce. Talk about spicy and delicious! By the way, don't be surprised if you see a celebrity. I want to love this place & it has potential based on the service and atmosphere. However, my lunch experience was only three stars worthy and I'll tell you why. To start on a positive note, PARKING LOT behind the restaurant! It's a god sent on a busy weekday when all you want to do is get in, eat, and get out while on your lunch break. Any spot in the valley that has a parking lot immediately gains 5 + points. So for convenience it was easy to find and easy to park. The service had its hit and misses. I would say attitude 5 stars! The gentleman behind the counter who was taking care of me and making my sushi was super nice. He smiled, took my order relatively quickly, and I could tell he was trying to get orders out, but they were just busy! For those of you who haven't been, it's a relatively small restaurant. Only a few dining tables and a long sushi bar. When I arrived for lunch the sushi bar was almost full, only about 4 seats open. So as service goes, when you only have 2 sushi chefs who are handling all of the food it just seemed to take awhile. Not convenient when trying to dine for a quick lunch. Maybe for a group of friends who are looking for a leisurely lunch, it wouldn't be too bad. The sushi was decent but also not particularly memorable, well - memorable in a good way. While the taste was fine the portions were small. I ordered the stuffed squid and some nigiri which after tip and tax, I walked out paying about $25-$30. Honestly felt like a rip off given the size of the stuffed squid and the lack of "wow" in taste. I just know of many other sushi spots that will cut you a decent size of nigiri, especially if your not ordering a lot of food. For the price point I left feeling disappointed. I will say again, my sushi chef was very nice and there were clear good vibes buzzing around the place. Lots of locals. As I was wrapping up to leave, some locals came in and sat next to me chatting it up with one of the chefs and commenting how this spot is always their favorite. I feel like I definitely missed out on whatever it was that keeps them coming back. There are just so many sushi options that I can't say I'll plan to be back anytime soon. One of my fish pieces had a huge sharp bone in the middle of it - I'm including a picture. Thank God I chewed it on the flat side instead of maybe puncturing my soft palate. I immediately called to let them know in case it pointed to a larger issue. The host confirmed the sushi isn't prepared near any decorative planters or gravel and suggested it might've come from the manufacturer. That raised more questions than answers. I asked some chef friends and they all said they've never heard this. But I figured the manager would clarify in a follow-up. It's been three days, and I haven't heard back. I don't usually leave reviews, I prefer to resolve things privately rather than publicly call out a restaurant. But I was genuinely disappointed with how Tatsuki handled a recent issue. I continue to drive miles and miles for my favorite sushi spot - Literally, I lived in Topanga Canyon when I found Tatsuki in 1996, then moved to the westside, and now I'm down in San Pedro and I still make the effort to drive all the way. The place, it's changed a bit since Naoki has taken over for his Dad, he's redone the bathrooms (lol) and the entire restaurant, from floor to walls, to bar, to ceiling to AC, even down to the incredible chop sticks. Slight changes to the food, no more cod in the handrail, no more secret sauce with the shrimp tempura roll unless you know the secret menu, and the stuffed squid no longer has the masago, according to the head chef, it's for environmental reasons, and in my research this choice makes a lot of sense. But the central pillar of the restaurant remains the same, GREAT food, excellent little location on the Blvd, and now the ambiance has been kicked up a notch. The original crew remains which is wonderful to see. read more

I was concerned that everything would be high priced but found the cut rolls, hand rolls and sides were perfect for my lunch budget! I got a cut California roll for my mom that was so fresh you could smell it through the box and it's imitation!! The pieces are also pretty big and perfectly cut with lots of wasabi and ginger. The hand rolls were amazing. The spicy tuna was just the right side of spicy, truly good. And the California was sweet and satisfying. The same sweetness you can find in the cut roll which is a real sign that everything is made just right to me. They're generous handrolls too so quite filling. Miso soup for 3 bucks, I was not expecting to get as much as I did! There's real soft tofu in chunks and the broth is light and savory. It's that little bit of warm satisfying taste. Overdue review! I've legit been coming here for 10 years now, started coming in 2012 and Tatsuki is still one of my top 3 sushi places in the valley. My favorite roll is the Firecracker roll and Small Firecracker roll (crispy rice cakes)! The quality has stayed the same, the taste too, so I appreciate their consistency. The restaurant itself has remained cozy and small, love the sushi bar renovation! No complaints about the service, it's always good. Fish feels fresh, I love the way they prepare their spicy tuna. Their Ganja Roll, Goregeous Shrimp Cut Roll, and the Caterpillar Roll are some of my favs, and their hand rolls never disappoint!
